Dream Valley Mini Discussion Thread 2

Apr 27, 2024

    1. I have a lot of coloured resin. Like a stupid amount. I have 11 dolls in just various shades of grey. I've got red, blue, turquoise, aquamarine, grey, tan, green, purple, black. Most of those colours are multiple shades as well. I don't have one in that lovely shade of blue DV is currently offering so.... Yeah, they make trying to be kind to the wallet unnecessarily hard.

    2. Thank you SO much for the picture!!! He looks so beautiful :D I’m SO excited!!
I’m definitely going to need to work out where I’m putting mine long term once he’s here (I doubt he’ll fit in my already very cramped display cabinet lol)

    3. I feel that, in general with some companies. It makes you wonder if you originally thought of it or was it inception.

    4. *LOL* sometimes i wonder if someone at DV has their eye on the 'Doll you want...that don't exist!' thread here as they sure have a knack for filling some of niche gaps for fantasy dolls!

Aeon Butterfly - JiaLan certainly has a gorgeous resin colour and nice to see a male version of the four arms body. Sadly I think the doll is disappointing in the fact it's a male butterfly, he should have some spectacular wings, but instead he has...nothing. Poor guy isn't going to attract many butterfly ladies :XD:

    5. @Rekka Thanks a bunch for the insight. I'm glad to hear that the posing range is good and the magnets hold! I gather that both arms are strung separately instead of on a single elastic like normal dolls? (crossing the torso from one arm to the other) Since the magnets are in the way.

I guess I'm asking about the engineering because I've heard a rumour (from Chinese social media) that this system may be an issue if the arm elastic goes awry or if the arm magnet gets detached from the arm and stuck to the partner magnet in the shoulder channel. I'm wondering how one would handle that -- is there a way to get at the arm elastic behind the magnet? how is the elastic attached to the shoulder? How deep is the shoulder channel, how would you get a stuck magnet out of there?

    6. @Iron_Dog I also have a number of dolls in fantasy resin. Not counting the 3 in white, I have 5. Two blue, two grey, one red. I had another red one on order from Dream Valley, but my order was refunded due to it being too hard to make. Still, that new resin color is tempting!

    7. Ah, he's still just a caterpillar.

      • x 1
    8. I'm disappointed too. Maybe they felt wings and the extra arms would interfere with each other? Or have the winged dolls not been popular? I do love the four arms and the blue resin, I'm just not really in love with his face, so I may pass on him for that reason.

Oh, and my Ehecatls have shipped too!*
Edit: (Well, except it's possible they've been caught in this suspension of shipping from China, so...)

    9. @Leo Pheonix One of my friends has the large dragon in red with full blushing. She says she's going to try and bring him to DollNorth in a month but he's heavy and large and I think she's a bit crazy to attempt it but I do want to see him in person so....

    10. For what it's worth if anyone would like to have this info as well - since the JiaLan page said the new blue is available on "all dolls" I asked Erica from Legenddoll for clarification, and this is what they said:

"All available dolls and bodies of Dream Valley can be made in this skin color (the grey blue) now."

I have considered the butterfly man a lot too, mostly for the four arms and resin color, but am probably going to pass because I ended up not loving the head or lower body much, and the above gave me hope that I might be able to just nab another cool doll in that resin color one day! A bit of a gamble but I will take it haha~

    11. @Cylunny - Oh, I didn't notice that! Thanks for pointing it out!

    12. I think Dream Valley is doing the new resin color as they have the previous ones. All dolls will be available in that color while the limited doll in that color is available. After that only the standard colors will be available.

    13. I was looking forward to a 4 armed man version (my Moth is on order :D 2 months to go), and although the colour is fabulous, the proportions seem off to me. For example the serpent I got last week has a smaller head and the shoulders are 1cm wider and the proportions look fabulous. It is a shame but feel I have saved money. I also really like the lotus shoes he is wearing (the petal head gear isn't for me though :sweat)... I compared photos of him and moth side beside and Moth's proportions are spot on, and makes his look even more skewed. This is my preference of course :sweat

    14. Sounds like a grand opportunity to make him an original pair of wings to me! :lol:I've always wanted to play with the fantasy film stuff I've seen used in other crafts...wonder if they still make that? Been ages since I thought to look. Failing that, there's always my 3D printer...

That's right! Each arm is strung independently. The whole thing is a rather clever little mechanism, and the little "gear" notches seem to both help with keeping the arm in the socket, and with maintaining its pose. Without taking out the magnet to see inside, I can only guess at its exact internal construction, but glancing through the little hole in the "plug" portion, I'd assume the elastic is tied around something in there.

The plug is just under an inch long. So the channel portion isn't so deep as to be inaccessible. I could see it being annoying if the magnet from the plug comes out and gets stuck in there, but I think if you have a stronger magnet that you can reach in there with, it shouldn't be too hard to retrieve. A problem for Future Me to do Science on! :XD:

(Not sure if this image is working, I can see it while writing the post, but it doesn't show when previewed. Maybe a link will work?)

Hopefully these shots are clear enough to see some of the finer details. If I needed to restring this guy imminently, it might be a pain, since I would need to figure out how to remove that magnet. Buuut that's another problem for Future Me, and hopefully by the time restringing becomes necessary, the glue on the magnet will have loosened and it'll be a self-solving issue.

    15. I come with a tribute of a snake boy to show off my lovely goth boy.
      Meet Orpheus
      [IMG]

My lab grown snake boy here is prefect in every way and can do no wrong. This 4'6" long snake doll could eat one of my smaller dolls and I would still defend him with my life. XD

    16. @Rekka Thanks a bunch for your detailed explanation and pic of the magnetic arms. That was very informative and I appreciate the info on how DV designed the system. Looks like there's a way to access the elastic knot from that hole in the arm, without having to mess with the magnet. Hopefully that won't be necessary for a long time yet! :XD:

    17. This man has never done anything wrong in his life, and he never will! I stand by this no matter what "evidence" might be supplied.

But forreal, he's lovely! I chickened out of getting that particular face for mine (didn't quite fit what I had in mind), but I'm so happy to see folks who picked it. It's a super cool sculpt.

You're welcome! I think you're right and it should be possible to access the "anchor" point in the plug. I tried to get a better look by pushing at the frayed, tied end of the elastic, but the only appropriately-sized tool I had on hand was metal-tipped and kept getting pulled up to the magnet so I couldn't see enough to say anything with certainty about the interior :lol:The frayed bits are super floofy too so I can't quite corral them out of the way regardless.

    18. @Tippetarius - Love the dramatic black-and-white version too - all the fullsets were great! Congrats!

My snake boys apparently did escape confinement after my last post - should be here tomorrow!

    19. Oh, nice to see one with this head sculpt out in the wild! It's a very fun head design :D

I was hoping I'd be receiving my shipping notification soon but the doorbell rang today and it's my Ehecatl! So that was a big surprise and speaking of big, the box is so big i'm a little scared to open it... :sweat

    22. So I made a great buy yesterday in a charity shop, a musical instrument (maybe a guitar?) stand. It is perfect for the DV serpent and thought I'd share. It is very sturdy, height adjustable, very stable and not too intrusive. Also as the supporting vertical pole is curved at the top keeps away from the snake body and can carry the stand with naga in it holding at the top of the curve. So pleased!

      High holding, still extremely stable

    23. Yeah, I noticed this about Jian too. I think DV might have two sculptors (or sculpting teams) with different preferences re:head proportions. Of their more recent dolls that I own, Bone Butterfly and Ehecatl have smaller heads, while Maurren has a bigger head and smaller face. At this scale, such small things really make a difference and stand out!

I like the more mature look so I've increasingly been going for small heads and more proportionate faces on the heads. Wish we could buy the shoes and hands separately bc I love them as well but alas...

    24. So I learned when I got my boys the tongue actually is it's own part and comes out. I most likely will glue the tongue in place with Orpheus as scared to lose it. I fell hard for his default face up and have no regrets on him the green tongue is like my fav part DV really was top game for the snake boy's face ups.

I'm glad people love Orpheus as much as do. X3
I plan to find him some gothic shirts and make him a utility kilt for when he might want pockets.

As for my solid green snake, he is waiting on a replacement face/head as his face up was hurt in shipping. Soon as that gets here he will get nice pix and with him I might leave the tongue off as the mouth looks just as good without it.

    25. I really need to go back to using my DSLR and editing photos on my computer. My phone camera is nice for what it is, but resizing sucks. Anyway, in case anyone wants to see my boys:

      More photos here.

Funny thing - I opted for ACBJD's stand offer, assuming these guys would come with an MSD-sized stand. Nope. The one they came with is even taller than the SD-sized one I already owned. Which I guess is great if you want the tail mostly up in the air. I don't. So, I've got them on the MSD- and SD-sized versions I already owned. Also, they came with two different sized pairs of glass eyes, one of which had irises that would completely fill the eye holes, and the other of which were poorly matched, so I ended up throwing a couple sets of temporary acrylics in there instead.
The plan is still to swap torsos, but I'm going to enjoy them as they are for now. They have a couple minor flaws, but overall, I love them!

@kyukyukyu - Oh that's a great solution for a stand too! And you won't have the problem of them sliding around on the acrylic base like I do. Nice find!

    26. @Sianserais he looks amazing, love what DV did with the official blushing :D and the acrylic stand is definitely less intrusive. I got an 'invisible standard 1/3 from ACBJD for this serpent but decided not to use it (as I didn't trust it to hold the dead weight of this bjd :sweat). Tbh the musical instrument stand being £5 made it a no brainer so to speak. But the tripod legs make the stand unusable to place him where I was intending as the foot print is a wide area.

    29. I did order blank, and I placed my order last October. :)

I ordered her in that dark cocoa brown, and I'm really pumped to see how that looks in person.

    32. Oh would love to see the cocobrown :D I ordered my Moth in normal on the penultimate day of the preorder  hoping June delivery, May isn't a great month for me :sweat looking forward to seeing all the different Moths.

I keep looking at the blank promo pics and Moth is so gorgeous :fangirl:

    34. People on xiaohongshu are starting to get their moth girls in (where is mine!! DV please!! :aeyepop:) and there's something I noticed which has also pointed out in a length post by one owner.

The white moth wing head and shoe parts are not actaully very white, and don't seem to be matching the bodies if they were cast in white resin. The fantasy parts are more yellow. I think I have seen one or two posts where the white parts match the white body, but in general this seems to be that the parts are not exactly "wall white" as the one xiaohongshu user pointed out. There isn't much to be done about this, so just a heads up for us to manage our expectations with the colour of our fantasy parts. Hoping we get lucky though!

The coco resin looks so pretty in the few box openings I've seen. Someone put a Peakswoods msd he!d on the body and it also was incredibly cute and fit well, I think!

    35. I am not keen myself on white-white resin but exceptions are things like these shoes and headress accessories I have my fingers crossed I am in a later batch :sweat thanks for the heads up! Really hoping I don't regret getting 'normal' (I was attempting to have a body I could more easily hybridise) as the other darker resins looked lovely in the samples... and a Peakswood head sounds really cute! :D

    37. My girl in coco has also shipped, but since I ordered her through TB she's sitting at a warehouse until I figure out what to do with her. If she had been ready sooner, I could've hoped to get her to the U.S. before May 2. As it stands I might just end up shipping her to my friend's house to stay stored there until I see how the situation here develops. It seems I'll be living vicariously through everyone else's box openings for a while... :pout: Sucks that something I ordered in October would end up like this.

    38. Ugh yes! Dang, I hope you are able to receive it soon. These tariffs are just the worst!

    39. Hope it's okay that I'm replying to a post from three months ago lol but it looks like your Chaos boy is actually standing on his own in this photo... is that the case? If so, HOW?? Mine collapses instantly (his back legs mainly) and I'm actually considering modding him to get him to stand. (On an unrelated note, I like that we both had the same idea to give him Constantine's outfit.)

Which, question to the rest of the class: if you have a Chaos/Order, how do you get them to stand, if you do? :?

      • x 1
    40. Yup, he’s standing! So My Chaos is actually pretty decent at standing. Right from the box I usually didn’t have to struggle with him to get him to stand, but he does buckle at his back ankles occasionally. I’m thinking maybe it’s the weight of his big fat tail that makes his hind legs want to collapse. I did hot glue suede and wire his back legs (putting extra wires through those ankle joints) which helped with the buckling.

    41. Hmm, okay, I will try wiring/sueding before modding. I wasn't sure if it would help, since the hind ankle joints just seem to lack any sort of kips or flanges or whatever to keep them from collapsing. (The big fat tail certainly doesn't help lol.) Not that they were designed without them, I just think my particular doll has basically none, as if they're worn off or didn't cast properly.

But yes! I'll try wiring especially, since I have some 16 gauge steel wire left over from wiring my Super Gem. Thank you!

Edit: I went ahead and wired his hind legs since I was already doing stuff with wire, and it worked! He stands no problem now! Wiring those legs with 16 gauge steel wasn't easy lol but it was worth it! Thank you again!

Edit 2: forgot to pay the doll tax.

    42. I don’t have any dream valley dolls at the moment, but wiring and sueding are my best friends for all the dolls I own. I personally have found quadrupedal dolls more prone to collapsing, especially ones with digitigrade legs. I think they require a lot of tension and lack of slippage to stay up and resin… is not the least slippery substance.

    43. Oddly enough, my other centaurs (the Doll Chateau one excluded, since he's, you know, Doll Chateau) are my most sturdy dolls. My DV Dean stands on his own at all times, I trust his steadiness that much. But the Chaos, yeah, his resin is very slippery. So no matter what his tension is, there's just no grab.

      • x 1
    44. My Dean stands well without fears of falling over, too. I would trust him to remain standing unattended for a good period of time.

    45. Anyone have advice on restringing the wings on DV dolls? I would love to get my Gloria fully set up but the wings have left me stumped. I also didn't have all my tools out so when the elastic got pulled all the way through on one side I gave up putting her together.

    46. Here are some pics I took of my Moth last night! I'll try to make a box opening thread to house all the photos later today.

    47. My Chimera arrived today! So happy she made it safe. She is so big compared to my Gloria.

I had so free time so I completely unstrung my Gloria and got her back together. Her wings are finally on now but I had to use some spare longer string cause it was way too tight to get them on with what was provided so now they’re a little floppy.

    48. I figured out what my mystery head was, it's a chimera head.

I picked it up at the UK BJD Con's charity table for £15, unlabelled and I wasn't sure which one it was. Then for a little bit I thought it was some sort of weird accidental cast of Uncia that had horn magnets. Nope, it's just a regular chimera head

So I guess technically it is a hybrid, and I like it no less because it's not some accidental oops since I think I missed the Chimera when it released. Now I'm wondering what to do, whether to try and get an official Chimera body from DV or to make it a proper Chimera and hybrid a lot of things from different companies.

    49. Ahhh the moth gal is SO pretty! I thought about that one for a minute, but I'm glad I held out, since the butterfly boy was the better choice for me. Still, I'm so happy to be seeing owner pics so I can live vicariously though them and appreciate her from afar :XD:

Bit of an odd question since this is about a less-recent thing, but... about Nightmare Constantine. Does anyone know if this is a Really Truly Permanently Discontinued Model, or is there a possibility he'll be brought back like in the recent-ish Nirvana Phoenix (or all the other Discontinue Forevers like the dragon folks) event?

I tried referencing the exact wording on the last listing I could find for him, and my impression was that it's different from Order/Chaos which sound like they got a last hurrah and are now permanently out. Trying to decide if I should pursue any existing Constantines I can find, or if I should sit back and wait.

Because if they might bring him back, and he's eligible for the new blue-grey skintone that Jia Lan has... :D It would fit my idea for him so much better than any of the ones he originally came in.

    51. @Crissaegrim a true Chimera hybrid body for your Chimera head might be easier to pull off than to find a matching limited body for her. Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

The blue-grey was stated to be available to be available for all dolls while the order period for Jia Lan was open. None of the 3 distributors I know of still have the resin color available as a choice. They do this with special resin colors fairly often.
