Does Anyone Collect Tonner?

Feb 14, 2017

    1. OMG! I've seen Dark Seas Evangeline on Ebay, and her face-up scared me! Seriously! :o:o

But, it's amazing how lovely the repaint looks. Wow! She looks like a totally different doll. Maybe that means there's hope for Crystal Ball Evenings Evangeline. Her eye makeup looks like a disco-ball exploded in her face.:frownyblush:

      • x 1
    2. Haha! But not only that (and this is just my opinion) but the dark red/pink lip color did not work with all the releases! The color scheme of Crystal Ball may have looked prettier with a mauve or glossy pink lip if you know what I'm saying.

      • x 1
    3. You can actually get many of the vinyl dolls for decent prices still but finding artists who work on the vinyl dolls with inset eyes is not always easy. If I could find one I would get a couple of different dolls that are always being listed (and that Dark Seas would be one of them because I really like that hint of blue in her hair!) I wish he had made the vinyl dolls with a head cap so you could change those eyes easily (too many of them have that the deer-in-the-headlight look)

      • x 1
    4. I agree Stellarphenomena. The whole face-up on Dark Seas Evangeline is a total disaster! The dark lip color just didn't work with that scary green metallic eyeshadow. It's little wonder that doll always seems to be available on Ebay. The same goes for Parnilla. There seems to be more Parnillas on Ebay than Evangelines. (I'm not a big fan of that face sculpt.)

I like the hint of blue in her hair too, Mu Shu. Unfortunately, with that scary face-up, I would have to steer clear of her.
Yes, a head-cap would have been nice for changing out the eyes. I wonder if anyone has ever sawed her head open to change the eyes? Wow! You'd really have to have nerves of steel, and a steady hand, to do that.

LOL! "deer-in-the-headlights"! I agree some of those poor girls look a bit startled. :aeyepop::aeyepop::aeyepop:

    5. After 4 long years of searching, hoping, waiting and three missed/lost opportunities I have finally managed to obtain one of the rarest offerings of Tonner dolls (and my 1 grail doll!). Far East Stella (first release, I got a second release doll a couple years ago and while I really like her she was NOT the one I really wanted)
      Far East Stella 2 (2)
      par Mu Shu, on ipernity

I have only seen her offered 4 times in the last 4 years. The first two listings were way out of my budget (especially for a vinyl doll) and I just sadly watched her be sold to others. The third time I got outbid by $1 :...( and man was that devastating. This last offering was out of my budget once shipping and taxes got added in, but the seller had an OBO so I contacted them. Let her know what my highest price was (including shipping) and thanked her for her time. I was dealing with a very sick kitty at the time so most of my money had been going to the vet. She countered my offer with a price that was $10 more and I accepted. Now she was still a little more than what I really wanted to pay once taxes were added in but I said to myself "I'm sure she'll be worth it once you see her in person". And I was right:3nodding:

That magenta teddy is such a gorgeous color and she really, really, really looks good in that color. Sadly I don't have anything in that color and she has been going through most of my Tonner outfits. We've had to settle on this Aurora outfit until I can find/buy something different.

She is easily in my top 5 dolls of the most beautiful Tonner releases he has ever done! I can't stop looking at her and she is making me extremely happy and giddy. So, so, so worth the wait.

    6. Mu Shu: Congrats!! I remember how long you have been wanting her. If I see any outfits in the teddy color I'll let you know. With her dark hair she would look great in any bold colors including black and white, so that's not hard. (The Brenda Starr Black Orchid Outfit?)

Always glad to see the Tonner thread come up!

    7. Wow! You finally got her! Congrats!!! :dance:dance:dance

She's a total beauty! What a gorgeous doll! I'm so happy for you! There is nothing like the joy you feel when you finally get a doll you have longed for. That is the best!

      Congrats again! :fangirl:

I will be launching new dolls and character figures developed in conjunction with Sideshow.

For those who are interested in learning more I encourage you to RSVP for the launch ( R Tonner Design ) Early sign-ups for this mailing list will receive an exclusive first reveal of the doll designs featured in our NEW fashion doll collection. Thank you for being a part of the Tonner Doll family over the years. Your dedication to this art form has meant the world to me, and I hope you continue the journey with us through our friends at Sideshow.

    11. Wow. Exciting for new dolls but thinking they're mostly going to be superhero related since that is the big thing. I wouldn't mind fantasy or mystical though

      • x 2
    12. Thanks for the update Stellarphenomena!
Holy cow! :moo This is intriguing! Sideshow Collectables and Robert Tonner?

Sideshow's products are largely superheroes, but Robert does have a thing for superheroes. I don't really expect to see a new line of Tyler-type fashion dolls from this collaboration. But, maybe the whole dark goth vibe of Evangeline might mesh up with Sidehow's fantasy product lines.

I was watching a video on Youtube by Robert, and he was explaining that he stopped making dolls because the company in China that he used, the owner retired and closed shop. He said by that time, things had changed so much in China, that he could not find another company that could produce his dolls the way he wanted or at the price point he needed.

    13. I do like to look at all the comic, movie & disney statues (we have a really good local pop culture store), although I don't have many. I'm looking forward to seeing Tonners involvement!

Hope it's going to be more than Wonder Woman.... (the last thing he was doing)

    17. It all started with Tonners for me. I have three that I dressed for Fiesta. I live in San Antonio and that’s our big city party. We love it, it’s drenched in color. You can take a look on my Flickr, frillseeker007. I hope that works, I’m brand new there. I love the 22 inch American size.

And it all lead to the BJD scene...

      • x 1
    18. Welcome Frillseeker! Lovely to have you here! :D

I was also into Tonner dolls right before I discovered BJDs. BJDs promptly put an end to my collecting Tonner. But, in 2017, I sort of rediscovered my love for my old Tonner girls.

Glad to hear you still have three Tonners. Which dolls are they? (Do I need a Flickr account to see your girls?)

      • x 2
    19. Uh...I am the guilty owner of more than three Tonners. I will admit to having Mary, Scarlet, two that I cannot remember their names, Caribbean, African American and one other. These last are the Fiesta trio. Yes, I think you have to have a Flickr account, BUT as long as it is not illegal on DoA, I will get them posted here, too.

I am a crazed costumer and everyone is going to have flamenco dresses next!

Thanks, Rabbit Moon, will look forward to sharing my Tonners soon. ❤️

    20. Yay more Tonner fans!! Looking forward to seeing your pictures Frillseeker.

I was the opposite. I actually had several BJDs BEFORE I got into Tonner dolls. I was originally a Barbie collector and Tonner dolls just seemed "too big" for me - then I got 3 SD sized dolls  Then suddenly Tonner dolls weren't so "big" after all. At the time I had a friend who actually owned a doll shop and she was a heavy Tonner dealer so I got many dolls at discounted prices quickly for my collection. I too love the 22" American Model dolls. I have since sold all of my boxed Barbies - still have about 20 clothes models on display. Recently started selling off many of my Tonner dolls as well - although I think I've gotten rid of all the ones that I could do without - the ones left I'm not ready to let go of (had 3 ready to be boxed up for sale but realized I would regret letting them go so back on the shelves they went). I wish I could let them go because now is a good time for sellers, did really well on the 15-16 dolls that I let go of and was able to pay off one of my loans.

      • x 2
    21. Loans...a word I am growing comfortable with as I acquire the dolls I like. It takes so long to get an Iplehouse or a SartoriaJ, Granado isn’t even offering the one I want. By the time they darken my door the loan is long since paid off, and I fell in deep fast.

      Thanks, Mu Shu

    23. @Rabbit-moon - seconding the wish for being able to sew!!! I have no skills :...(

@brightberry - what a fabulous Ellowyne collection you have :love You have the one Lizette doll in that first pic that I would love to own but missed out on and can't bring myself to pay the price on the secondary market. And yes, Ellowyne dolls have some of the BEST outfits made!

      • x 3
    24. Wow! Brightberry, that is a whole lot of wonderful Ellowynes! :fangirl:

The Steampunk costumes are awesome! :D

      Thanks for sharing!

      • x 1
    25. Wow, thank you everyone! I was so sad when Tonner had to cancel the line.

@Mu Shu Aw, I’m so sorry you missed out on that Lizette. Maybe prices will take a dip again in the future.

    26. I have tons of other Tonner/Wilde but only 1 American Model, Ruby. Here she is!

    27. @brightberry: You have a lovely collection! All these photos are inspiring to take my girls out again and photograph them. My main interest is Tonner/Wilde dolls and Ball-jointed dolls. <3

    28. Stellarphenomena, your American Model is so pretty!

That dark hair and those red lips are a classic Tonner win! :aheartbea

    29. I love the black and white, Stellarphenomena, and thank you ❤️

      • x 2
    30. Mu Shu: Totally agree here. Before production got too expensive for Tonner, the paint was top notch. How can you argue with this? Sometimes the real eyes were offset (wonky) or had a weird iris that created a weird stare.

This doll has a front facing glance, but a right eye that is off-center just enough so that if you turn her head she can appear to be side glancing!

    31. @stellarphenomena - Ruby is one of my favorite AMs! I was so glad when I found her a few years ago on the secondary market for just under her original list price. She makes a lovely model and photographs so well.

It's thanks to you and Mu Shu, and all the other Tonner collectors, who keep it plugging along.

    35. That BJD Sydney is one of my grails! I guess the only Sydney I’d wanted I never could get. I mean, I still want her. Haha it looks like you have every BJD he’d created. Maybe? Except the Ashleigh’s?

    38. Welcome to the Tonner thread, AdamJScott79! Appreciate your comments! :D

Do you have any Tonners in your collection?

      • x 1
    39. Thank you! I am! I started collecting them again after ten years and crossed most of the ones I wanted off my list. But then I bought the BJD Sydney and I’m hooked on BJD’s so I’m looking around my room wondering which ones I’m gonna sell to support my BJD addiction. Haha I’ll keep a good amount. I love them both. But At least Tonners have a cap. Who are some of your favorite Tonners?

      • x 1
    40. Yeah, I hear ya, AdamJScott79! When I first discovered BJDs I also thought I'd sell some of my dolls to bankroll my new BJD obsession, but I just couldn't bring myself to part with them; Tyler and Gene were such beautifully made fashion dolls. (And, I get very nostalgic about my older dolls.)

As for favorite Tonner dolls, I'm a huge fan-girl of the 2008 Tyler sculpt, Tyler 2.0. It's the sculpt that Tonner later used for his Wonder Woman Dolls.

Just wondering, what company makes your BJD Sydney?

      • x 1
    41. Hey Rabbit-Moon. The company that made the BJD Sydney was Tonner. I think he realized in the end that that was where doll collecting was heading. He didn’t make very many. Maybe 6 or 7 editions of 100 or so. But the BJD Sydney is one of my favorites

      • x 2
    42. Hi Rabbit, Tonner of course did EG and Ellowyne in resin BJD, but he also did Tyler, Ashleigh, Shauna, Sydney, Lady G (Cami/Cinderella type), Annora, and the 22" Avatar dolls.

    43. I never got a Tonner BJD, but I have 25 of the vinyls! Tyler 1.0 and 2.0, Matt, Renee, Shauna, Sydney, the Drearys, Daphne, Kit, Brenda Starr, Breathless, Tiny Kitty, Wonder Woman, Gem Tron, Harley Quinn, Annora, Deja Vu, Miette, among them :)

      • x 1
    44. You got a lot! I love it!

      • x 1
    45. LOL...Then I got obsessed with the more expensive BJD hobby, yikes!!

      • x 1
    46. I’m right behind you. Don’t worry. Maybe a little far back but something tells me this growing obsession in me will help me catch up

      • x 1
    47. It was wonderful to see all the dolls presented here. Some I hadn't see before they were a treat. I mostly lurk, but have enjoyed seeing this thread. I did love Tonner. I use to previously collect them. Sad to hear the news of when they closed. I hever got any of the bigger sizes like the 22".

I love the OOAK Tonners. I could never bring myself to sell them for I would never be able to get them back or find others like them.
I don't have many pictures of them because my old picture webhost dollpage, closed a while back and all the pics I had back then were lost. I only have a few left.

My first OOAK Matt and a OOAK Tyler channeling two of my favorites characters from LOTR. Aragorn and Arwen.

      @AdamJScott79

and yes, Sean O'neill was very nice. Fav of him was University and Romeo.
But I have a thing for reworked Matt's.

      @stellarphenomena

BJD Cinderella. Mother Goose was always a grail for me. I do believe I have The Sydney, Ashleigh and Tyler.

    48. Now THAT is a hunky doll. I wish I never stopped collecting cuz before BJD’s got big and Tonner was blowing up, and with the help of eBay, there were some of the best Tonner repaints i saw. One inspired by John William Waterhouse’ the lady of shallot and it was $500 back then which was (and still is haha) expensive but if I knew that doll was still gonna haunt me, I would have eaten ramen for a month to get her. Maybe one day I’ll come across her again. Yours are beautiful. You have good taste

    49. Hi Bren! Lurkers are are always welcome! :XD:

Wow! Your OOAK Matt and Tyler are gorgeous! Thanks for sharing! :dance

Holy Cow! My brain really did a walk-about, AdamJScott and Stellarphenomena. :?. You are so right, I totally forgot Tonner made BJDs in his other doll lines.

Would love to see a photo of your rare BJD Sydney, AdamJScott. :love

    50. Newbie question: can I post photos on here?

      • x 1
    51. @Bren love your dolls, Arwen is stunning, so otherworldly! Great that this thread is still going strong^^ One girl I still adore is my Scarlett- the sculpt never seemed young enough to me, but she reminds me of a more mature Vivien Leigh dancing up a storm in Tovarich:
I swapped her onto a NYCB body with the smaller bust.

@AdamJScott79 pretty sure you can post photos :)

Yes, back then they had some many talented face up artists, that are no longer active. And I hear you about longing for that one grail. I had one, A OOAK Matt ( Of course LOL) that to this day I do still miss. I was outbidded and I have never ever seen him again. :sigh

But I was able to find others, here is one. Captain Raile. So happy when I found him for sale again by his original owner.

    54. YAY new people to share with!! @AdamJScott79, BJD Sydney is the ONE remaining Tonner doll that I really want but those secondary market prices prevent me from getting her:...(

@Bren THOSE are some gorgeous repaints! I no longer own any repaints but still love looking at them and admire the talent that went into them.

@Saba - I think Scarlett works really well on the ballerina body, truly looks like she dancing.

I've been downsizing my Tonner collection (vet bills) but have pretty much unloaded all that I could get rid of for now. Had several more that I pulled their boxes out but as I was taking photos and replacing in boxes, they just couldn't be let go of, so are back on the shelves making me smile.

    56. Wow those are lovely. Don't know how I missed all the bjd's by Tonner. I have a huge collection of his 10" child dolls, but got rid of my fashion dolls. I have been collecting his dolls since his inception, would have loved to attend one of his conventions, but never enough money :(
