Does Anyone Collect Tonner?

Feb 14, 2017

    1. This is so odd.

I use to collect Robert Tonner's Tyler Wentworth like crazy! But, as soon as I discovered BJDs in 2005, that was the end of my Tonner love affair. All my old dolls got packed up and put in storage. But, yesterday, I was cruising EBay for a pair of BJD shoes, and out of the blue this doll popped up in one of the suggestion/teaser boxes. Since she was not a BJD, normally I would just click right past her, but I was captivated by her face. I'd never seen a Tyler look like this before. Found out she was issued way back in 2008. Well, something fired-off in my brain and I was hooked! I had to have her! Luckily, I won the bid and she's on her way home to me.

Anyway, I've been out of the loop for so long with regard to Tyler and all the other Tonner dolls, that it got me wondering...are there still people collecting Tonner dolls? This would probably be a nice place to talk about them. (I might even dig out some of my old Tonners and take a few pictures! ;)) I'd love to see your pictures of your Tonners, if you want to share.

I would also love to know which Tonner doll was your favorite?

    2. I have one Gene Tyler doll that I found at Value Village. However, these dolls are off topic at DOA. So...

    3. I believe they are okay to talk about in the Brigadoon Thread, which is a place for Off-topic Chat. Right?

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks!

    4. I think so,is ok in Brigadoom.
But, Tonner is closing his business this year, including Wilde Imagination, no more new dolls will released!

      • x 1
    5. Robert will still be producing the licensed dolls. like Harry Potter & Supergirl, but he is also offering a new line called Phin & Aero due to premiere at the Toy Fair, NYC this month. It is true he will not be producing anymore Ellowyne or Tyler, though.

      • x 1
    6. Wow! Derdre and sistercuervo, I didn't know that! Tonner has been around so long, it's hard to believe The Tonner Doll Company will no longer exist.

But, hey, we're all getting older. Maybe he wanted to turn the reins over to the next generation and take some time out for himself. I mean, I bought my first Tonner doll in 1995. And, he had already been in the Fashion Industry for almost two decades.

But, it is kinda sad that there will be no more Ellowyne or Tylers, or American Models.:(

    7. I have many Tonner dolls that I'd like to sell. Unfortunately, according to one doll store here in the states, their price has plummeted. Maybe that's why he's closing down the line. They were beautiful though. And the clothes were fantastic!

      • x 2
    8. I collected a lot of Tonner and their beautiful resin dolls led me to BJDs. They are so well made and are the most perfectly strung and posable dolls I have, it's too bad they are not DOA compatible. Many of the clothes fit my MSD and YOSD girls, I have two antique steamer trunks full plus more! Wish the shoes fit, sigh.

I hadn't heard he was shutting down, but I felt the fashion dolls had jumped the shark years ago, so I'm not too surprised. I love Ellowyne's fashions, I'm really sorry Wilde Imagination is closing. I thought they were doing well.

      • x 3
    9. I've got one Ellowyne Wilde. I found her cheap (99AUD) on ebay, but I have no idea what release she is. I think they are kinda expensive for what they are, especially compared to Pullips.

    10. Pony, thanks for the information. Makes you wonder about the state and popularity of "dolls", in general. A lot of doll stores have closed in the past ten years. Even that old warhorse of the fashion doll industry, Barbie, has seen her popularity wane.

I have quite a few Tonners, too. I've occasionally thought about selling them, but I never could muster up the enthusiasm to actually do it.

If you could sell all your Tonners, are there any you wouldn't be able to part with? I don't think I could ever part with my Beyond Envy Sydney from 2005. That green dress was so pretty. Or my Toscano Tyler, with that flowing, beaded dress. But, all my Signature Tyler's can GO! :XD:

      Beyond Envy Sydney
      [IMG]

Wow glynis37, I guess I really was out-of-the-loop when it came to fashion dolls, I was so focused on BJDs for the past decade. I don't own any Wilde Imagination dolls, but I thought they were pretty cool! And, I thought they were popular. I wonder what happened?

Well, now you have a place to show off your Tonner stuff, if you want. This is a thread for Off-Topic Chat, so it should be allowed. (I've seen in other threads where members are showing off their off-topic dolls, so I think we're safe here.)

What is your favorite Tonner doll?

Wow! Leiothrix, what a lovely picture! I'm not at all familiar with Ellowyne Wilde, but she's very pretty.

      Thanks for the picture!

    11. @Rabbit-moon she is a very pretty Tyler, love the black hair, blue eyes combo!
@Leiothrix your Ellowyne is lovely with glass eyes.
I have owned a few Tonners over the years, mainly the licensed characters back when our AUD exchange rate was on par with the USD. Here is one of my faves Jack Sparrow:
I look forward to seeing what Tonner's new line has in store for us.

    12. Saba, what a handsome fellow he is! Thanks for posting this guy!

You gotta say this for Tonner, his costumes were always great! I have a Tonner 17" Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger, and the costumes are gorgeous! I especially like their wizards cloaks.

I agree, I'm looking forward to Tonner's new stuff. I'm actually a little excited. :abambi:

    13. Omg, Tonners. @3@ Most of mine are still living in their boxes since the move, but they were my ruling passion until BJDs took all my doll money. XD My absolute favorite is my "Cocktails on the Plaza" Sydney Chase that I got at Collectors United Nashville back in 2004. (Cripes, that's been a while!!) Most of the ones I have are RTW dolls that I picked up to repaint, and I made a lot of clothes for them. (Huge surprise there!!) I also love my Sean O'Neill, he was so much softer than Matt.

Oh, and I have a soft spot for my red-headed Fashion Jane that Robert signed at CU!! ^3^ He nearly signed *me*, since I was dressed like Tyler (white blouse, black pencil skirt, and heels!), and it's still one of my favorite memories.

Gosh, I miss being in the fashion doll end of things. <3

    14. Thanks!
I think it's amazing the number of different lines they have and the vastly different styles that they are. Which leads me to:

I wasn't aware they made resin dolls, I'd really like to see one.

Thanks. I'm really not a fan of those with painted eyes, especially for the price that they sell for. To me the painted eyes make it look more like a Barbie, the inset eyes really make it "pop". Mine has rooted hair, but that is very well done, so I'm still happy with that.

    15. LOL! Yeah, Osaka, it's hard to believe that so long ago I was such a fangirl of Tonner's dolls. I guess I wasn't the only one. But, I have to admit, they still tug at my heart, especially when I pick up my old Toscano Tyler. She's so flowery and girly.

I remember Cocktails at the Plaza Sydney! She was very beautiful! What a classy doll!

There were so many dolls that I wanted, but at the time I thought Tonner was too expensive. (And, then BJDs came into my life and I found out the true meaning of the word "expensive".:doh

So cool that you have a Sean! I really wanted him! I agree he much softer and more handsome than Matt, I think. But he sold out in a heartbeat! And, then I moved on to BJDs and forgot about him. I do have a blond Matt, a Basil St. John, and a Yoshio, Tonner's Asian sculpt.

How awesome that you met Robert! I heard he is a very nice man. I got to meet Mel Odom at a Gene Convention before I started collecting Tyler. Yeah, those old doll conventions were pretty fun.

I would love to see some of your repaints and the clothes that you made.

Leiothrix, I wasn't aware that Tonner made resin dolls, either. I would really like to see one, too!

    16. I gave up any interest in collecting Tonner dolls when I realized how badly he treats the non-U.S. stockists of Tonner dolls and how little interest he has in non-American members of the Tonner Collectors Club.

I think the last straw for me was when there was an online sale of stock from the New York store for Collectors Club members but they only set it up to accept payments from members within the U.S.

I still buy Tonner stuff occasionally - but only very occasionally and only second hand, not direct from the company.

    17. Oh, jeez, yes -- Tonners got me started as a grown-up doll collector in 2003, and it was the Prego discussion board that introduced me to BJDs shortly after that (does anybody remember LeeAnn's Customhouse Miya, Rikku?). My first Tonner was a redheaded Matt -- no, seriously, it WAS. I think the last new Tonner I bought was the one who looked like Billie Holiday, with the gardenia in her hair; Diane, was she? (Sorry, I've always been bad with the sculpt & character names.) I don't play with mine anymore, really, and there are WAY too many of them in boxes in my study/yarn hoard/doll room, but I still think they're beautiful dolls. I can't bring myself to cull them, even though I know someday I'll need to. And I still love the way Tonners photograph, especially close-up -- this is an Angelina, repainted by Casshae:

I lost a lot of my favorite Tonner pictures when the Dollpage closed -- I don't know how I missed saving so many of them, waaaaaaah. :...(

    18. @Cynthia in FlintHills --I feel your pain! DX So many pictures just gone, and I don't even know if most of them are still on the hard drive of my old computer!

I love how well Tonners repaint, and just how much life and expression they can get with just a few minor tweaks.

Gosh, now I want to get mine out of the boxes!!

    19. And even the factory faces can be gorgeous and lifelike, I think -- not all of them, but plenty:

    20. Oh what fun that we can talk about other dolls in here! Thank you for starting this Rabbit-moon, it's very timely for me as I used to have a few Tyler and friends years ago then sold them to buy BJDs. I started pining to have them back last year and now some are in residence here once more. I love little sister dolls in general so of course 12" Marley was one of my favourites. Now I have four!

I also have this lady, but I'm not sure who she is, does anyone know? She came in the outfit which matches Marley's but doesn't look like the Tyler I've seen in magazines as part of this sister set.

Yesterday Casual Luxury Tyler came home to me, she was one I used to have so I'm delighted to see her again. I used to have Blush and Bashful Esme, but Sumptuous Esme is en route to me and I'm sure I'll love her just as much.

I also used to have a Sean O'Neill repaint, I can't believe I let him go! *sob*. Top of my wishlist now is University Cool Sean.

How lucky you are Rabbit-moon to have Toscano Tyler, I think she is stunningly beautiful, and that dress is heavenly!!! I'd love to see more photos of her if you get chance. If I ever owned her then she would be my favourite. Right now its my Casual Luxury Tyler, I'm so pleased to have her back.

Lovely to see your Jack Sparrow, Saba. He's another one who lived with me and I stupidly let him go.

Teddy, that's very disappointing, to be elbowed out like that by the company - not a nice way for them to treat loyal customers.

Osaka, please do release yours from their boxes and share pics with us.

Lovely photos of your dolls Cynthia in FlintHills

    21. @mikki, that's definitely a Tyler, but I couldn't begin to tell you which one -- so that's not much help, is it? ;) Beautiful facepaint, though! I always have liked the green-eyed and brown-eyed Tonners.

    23. Great Tonner dolls! I have about 25 of them, don't photograph them much as I'm obsessed with BJD's!

    25. I don't collect them anymore. I still look at the site but I feel like the best of Tonner was in the past now. Apparently they are discontinuing some dolls in their line. I haven't been happy with the face ups anymore. I did buy a Deja Vu last year though!

I have all the regulars....Tyler, Tyler 2.0, Sydney, Shauna, Cami/Cinderella, Drearys, DC & Marvel, etc.

This is a modified Scarlett sculpt with inset eyes, she's a bit different so I'll post her!

    29. Teddy, Im so sorry the Tonner people treated the non-USA fans so dismally! That's really a shame. I can only hope that it was just thoughtless oversight. Of course It wasn't right, but hopefully it wasn't intentional meanness.

Cynthia-in-flinthills, OMG! Your first Tonner was a red-headed Matt? How cute! (Now I want to see him!) Thanks for posting photos of your dolls. They are gorgeous! But your Angelina is especially beautiful! I always liked that sculpt a lot. She had such a serene beauty. Your pictures make me want to dig out my Tonner boxes and rediscover my old dolls. Some of them were so beautiful!

Osaka, I agree. Now I want to dig out my old Tonner dolls, too!

Mikki, Wow! I'm so glad I started this thread. I didn't realize there were still people out there who still had a soft-spot for their old Tonner dolls! Thank you for posting photos of your Marleys. They are so cute!
Congrats on getting back a Casual Luxury Tyler! She's a beautiful doll, and that cashmere coat was absolutely regal. You will love Sumptuous Esme! I have her and she's a spectacular doll. The early Tyler outfits were so well made - truly fashion design at its best.
OMG! You had a Sean O'Neil! I wanted him so badly when he came out. University Cool Sean was my grail boy of Tonner men, but somehow I just kept missing out on getting him. He's very hard to find now. I wish you luck in finding him.

Stellarphenomena, Thank you for your pictures! Wow! Your modified Scarlett is really pretty with her inset eyes! And I love your Christmas picture. Is that a Tyler? Sounds like you were a big collector of Tonner. Please feel free to post pictures of any Tonner dolls you wish. This thread has really made me nostalgic for any and all Tonner dolls!

      Thanks everyone!

Jeremy Voss, Brother Dreary, City Sophisticate Matt & Chase Model Sean! Then I have 2 Tyler's - 1 is a UFDC convention Theatre de la Mode & one other that escapes me.

    32. Wow stellarphenomena! What a beautiful group of Tonner dolls! I see some old favorites in there!:D

Thanks for the info on the Tyler 2.0. I think she's an amazing beauty! Not only beautiful, but she has a strong, intelligent face. (And, that's beautiful, too!)

Hopefully, my Tyler 2.0 should be arriving this weekend. I'll post pictures when she arrives.

Well, Mrkendoll, you definitely kept some of the very good ones! Those four male dolls you mentioned are gorgeous! Jeremy Voss and Sean McNeill are two boys I would have loved to have gotten. I'm so jealous! Any chance you can post pictures of them?:eusa_pray

    34. Love seeing all the photos here! I have four Tonners - two Ellowynes and two of the franchised dolls (Batwoman from the DC Bombshell's line and Martha from the Doctor Who line). I got three of them at deep discounts (and even the fourth was on sale), so I'm not surprised to see the non-franchised lines disappearing - although it is a shame.

    35. At least it wasn't personal to me it seems to be the way Tonner (dis)regards non-American collectors.

I've heard of other instances (more from doll dealers outside of the US, than from Collectors Club members) but none of them speak well for Tonner's attitude.

My photos are not the best and I just slapped the nearest wigs on some of them, but I hope you can get the idea of how lovely they are. I think they have great face-up potential!

There are also resin Ellowyne and Evangeline Ghastly out there, and of course, Amelia Thimble!

    38. Mikki OMG! He's so gorgeous! *drools*

I feel your pain! I'd be kicking myself too if I had let that boy go! (#1 rule in my house - "Gorgeous Boys Stay, Girls Can Go!" Even though I sold off a ton of Barbies, I kept all my Kens.

I wish us both luck in finding a Sean! And when we do, we can post pictures of him here! :fangirl:

Hervoyel, your two girls are beautiful! The pretty lady from India is quite spectacular; I love her costume!

I lucked out too and got a lot of my Tonner dolls at a deep discount. I got a very cute Brenda Starr, who was originally $139.99 for only $59.00! (At the time, I think Tonner was producing too many dolls, and doll stores could not keep up.).

      Thanks for sharing her girls!

Teddy: Yes, I think I did hear that Tonner was very aggressive in his marketing to doll shop owners.

Wow, glynis37! I didn't know Tonner had made resin dolls. They are really lovely. Do they have glass eyes you change-out like a BJD?

You know, I think Asian ball-jointed dolls took a big bite out of Tonner's business. Because before BJDs, all I bought were Tonner dolls, but after I discovered BJDs I never bought another Tonner. And, I believe that is a common story among American BJD collectors. I even remember a rant years ago in some doll magazine about how Asian BJDs were destroying the American doll industry. (Jeez! Guilt much?)

Thanks so much for sharing a photo of your resin girls!

Mikki, I agree! I'm learning a lot, too!

    39. Surprisingly, BJD's are what actually got me to buy some Tonner dolls! I had been a Barbie collector for years and always thought that the Tonner dolls were "too tall" :doh But then I found out about BJD's way back in 2007 I think, and I bought one off ebay (way back before recasts were a problem). It was an MSD sized doll and I thought, well, that's not too bad. A couple of months later I would own an SD size doll and once that happened, Tonner dolls didn't seem "too tall" after all:) I only have a few and of course they were all bought 2nd hand and out of production. They don't get "played" with but I do like looking at them. Here's a few:

    41. Wow! Mu Shu, your dolls are gorgeous! I have a real soft-spot for Tonner's American Models. Those are the first dolls I ever bought from Tonner back in 1995. They were huge compared to anything else I'd ever collected, but it certainly got me use to the idea of 1/3 sized dolls.

Your Daphne is beautiful! I always liked that sculpt. I only have one Daphne and one Brenda, but I think they are both special.

And, you are right, I didn't play much with them, but they were gorgeous to look at. The clothes were so exquisite, I think I was kind of afraid to mess them up. :nowords:

I have no idea who Deeanna Denton is, or Deja Vu, but they are lovely dolls. and their gowns are fabulous! I guess those were later issues. He certainly had a lot of doll lines. My knowledge of Tonner kinda stops in 2006. But, I'm really enjoying all the new and different dolls that members are posting!

      Thanks for sharing your pictures!

Wow! MrKendoll1, you use to own a University Cool Sean!!! OMG! Are you sorry you sold him? Well, I guess it's okay because you still have a Sean. I saw one on Ebay tonight - starting bid $250 dollars. Gads! That a pretty high starting bid and I'm sure it will go much higher. Unfortunately, at this moment, my poor wallet is moaning in agony! I think I'm gonna have to let that boy pass me by. :...( AGAIN!

You can post photos of your Tonner boys here in this thread! This is Brigadoon, and OT dolls are allowed here. But, a link is good too.

    42. Yes, they have changeable eyes! These were my first dolls where I could change eyes and wigs and have a dozen dolls in one. That and the weight and quality feel of resin made me lose interest in vinyl and plastic and I never looked back!

I forgot her yesterday (shame on me!), but I also have "Stone Cold Agnes Dreary" in resin. I'll try to remember to get a picture or two soon!

    43. Rabbit-moon - you are correct about the quality of the clothes! I'm glad a lot of his outfits can fit my MSD dolls and some (not all) of the American Model clothes fit my SD girls (they need to have larger busts or else I really have to pin them in the back, but everything else fits great). Sadly all those awesome shoes don't fit :atremblin I don't have any of the Brenda Starr dolls but always find myself looking at them on ebay (they just remind me of old Hollywood glam, which I love) I do have some of the outfits for Brenda though, again just old classy Hollywood styles. I have a couple other AM's but need to get their pics taken (will try to work on that this weekend). Since I was late to the game with Tonner dolls many of the ones I would really like to own are long gone and never seem to come up for sale.
This American Model (Ruby) I would LOVE to find Ruby
      I also wouldn't mind finding Belle 22
I never looked at the male dolls but that Sean doll looks pretty good!

    44. I bought her nude, so I had to give her new clothes!

    45. Glynis37, Wow! That's really cool that you can change out the eyes! I had no idea Tonner made resin dolls. They really do look lovely. Thanks again for posting your pictures, I love seeing them!

Looking forward to seeing your "Stone Cold Agnes Dreary". (What a great name - "Agnes Dreary". So cute!)

Mu Shu, I love old Hollywood glamour, too! I think that's why I collected Mel Odom's Gene for a while. Those old Hollywood styles were so cool! (My favorite old movie of all-time is Casablanca from 1943.)

Wow! Those American Models you would like to find are beautiful! Ruby is gorgeous! I have a lot of the really old American Models, 1995-1999. The only modern ones I got before I became devoted to BJDs are Flamenco, Lady Manhattan, and Sevilla from 2005.

Looking forward to seeing your other American Models! Thanks!

WOW! :aeyepop: What a beautiful doll! What an amazing gown!

    46. Rabbit-moon - I almost bought Sevilla a few months ago, but passed to get some resin dolls instead. I have the outfit from Flamenco, bought it for my SD dolls, again fits best of some bustier dolls than others but still looks good.

stellarphenomena - She is gorgeous! I have that outfit too.

I desperately wish that there were more bjd makers who would make gorgeous SHOES like Tonner made that would fit my girls (all sizes yo-sd, msd and sd). I have a few pairs of heels for my sd girls but most of the time all I find are platform type shoes, which I have enough of. I want the sexy, slinky heels that the girls can wear for "a night out on the town" :)

    47. I've seen a lot of gorgeous AM dolls, but I always think the black haired ones are the most striking!! Great dolls you have.

I know exactly what you mean about BJD shoes. I have two pair that are kind of dressy. Otherwise they are clunky platform type, yeah.

    48. Thanks for sharing your resins. I've always admired them. I never collected those (only the EG's)

    49. Cool thread. Robert Tonner did so much for so long!

    50. She is so pretty. Maybe I'll get motivated to put the gowns on a few of my dolls and take a photo. Tonner fashions were awesome!!

    52. Have to agree with you on the black haired ones! Although there were a couple of platinum blond AM that were killer.

ETA: managed to find some pics of my other 2 AM

    53. Wow!! I have to agree these are gorgeous! I think I like the heavy make-up AM dolls. They are both beauties. I like her without the distracting hat. There was a red head I always like too, La Belle Francaise. Also a brunette that was more casual, Metropolitan.

    54. Everybody's dolls look fabulous :D

I have a few Tonners I bought from a friend downsizing her collection some time ago , including these two pretty ladies . The blonde is Tyler , but her friend we're not sure about .Does anyone know who she is ? She has the same body as the Tyler , darker tan skin and peach coloured hair . I'm pretty sure her outfit is not original to the doll , I think it's just what my friend dressed her in to send her to me .

I use to like seeing all the fashion dolls in the Doll magazine we use to have in the UK , it's a shame it folded .
I also have a Tiny Kitty and Ellowyne I got from the same friend , as well as some other dolls including her only BJD . Ellie arrived with a huge amount of clothes , including the Tonner set Tyler has claimed :)

    55. Pony, I'm sure now that word is out that he has closed his original business, and no more Tylers or Ellowynes will be made, the prices will certainly start to go up.

Mu Shu, your American Models look awesome! Confetti is one of AMs that really tempted me. The colors are so pretty! And, your Winter Solstice girl is fabulous! Some of Tonner's fashion designs were breathtaking. (And, actually, I liked the hat that came with this outfit.)

Tabitha, I have no idea who your mystery girl is, but she's very pretty! I love her strong features and peach colored hair! I hope someone can help identify her.

I also miss the fashion doll magazines I use to get. I was an avid fan of Haute Doll Magazine before it folded, and I also use to read Fashion Doll Quarterly. But with my attention so focused on BJDs, I just stopped buying them. I just might re-up my subscriptions, now that I'm thinking about.

    57. OMG! Look who showed up in the mail today! The doll who reignited my fashion doll appreciation.

      Isn't she beautiful?

I found this perfect red dress for her at The Doll Peddlar; its called Convertible Cocktail made in 2009. I gottta say I'm a little disappointed in this new outfit. The early Tonner fashions I got always came with stockings, lots of nice jewelry, and sometimes a purse. But, this little number didn't have anything but stud earrings. Kinda disappointing considering the cost, but I had to have it! It goes so perfectly with her hair and coloring. I guess I'll buy stockings and jewelry later.

Still, nothing can dull my enthusiasm for this doll. She's the Tyler I always wanted.

    58. Nice!! I love the red. Sorry about the disappointing lack of a full set fashion. Didn't it at least have the red shoes? Or was it listed with "missing items"?

    59. Thank you, stellarphenomena! Yes, it was a complete and pristine box with the Tonner mailer included. So, I did get the red, strappy shoes, which are pretty. I was just expecting a nice, red rhinestone bracelet or at least stockings. Back in the day, Tonner was always good for a few nice little extras.

But, I won't let that dampen my Tyler 2.0's homecoming. I'm in love! :aheartbea (Even my husband seems to have a crush on her...:XD:)

I did some research, and I'm guessing that the 2.0 sculpt didn't have many fans, since it was only used for that one year in 2008. After that it looks like Tonner went back to Tyler's original sculpt until the Wonder Woman dolls started being produced in 2013. At least, I think that's what I read.

    60. Glad you guys are loving her! Ummm....not sure what you are saying - have you had a chance to check out any of the other Tyler 2.0 dolls? Au Milieu de L'hiver, Bryant Park, Crimson On Park, Private Affair, Esteemed Gratitude, Celebration a Paris, Joyeaux Anniversaire...were those all in 2008?? Ultra Basic Gothic was a killer beauty!! Wonder Woman/Diana Prince/Lady Action later, yes... :3nodding:
