I was thinking about making Danny Phantom cosplays for my boy dolls when they arrive, and it got me thinking. Do your dolls cosplay? What I mean is, your characters dressing up as a character they/you like? Or do you just buy dolls to directly represent the characters you’re a fan of?
I have some dolls of characters I like. I also have some that represent my characters but can cosplay too.
I just typically just buy dolls to be the characters I am a fan of in most cases. Though I have a few nerdy dolls that I plan to make cosplay outfits for.
Like the commenters before me, I own dolls based on characters I like. Mostly from Japanese video games, and anime but I also like forcing them into cosplaying other characters just for fun. Mostly because I can't own all the characters I would love to own in BJD form (I prefer other types of dolls/figures more), and it's easier for me to just make cosplay outfits, despite sucking at sewing. Here's one of my dolls cosplaying as the Bogeyman from SHH (based on my favorite SH monster of all time Red/Pyramid Thing/Head). Also my favorite villain from MGS, Psycho Mantis. (:
I'm going to make Silmarillion character cosplay - Melkor. I guess it would be pretty hard but what else to do while quarantine.
My dolls will cosplay. My two yosd girls have Minnie mouse cosplay outfits and I have several different ones in a list that I plan to make for my other dolls. I have a LOT of cosplays. Jaxie my switch boy hybrid's character wants to be a hairstylist and loves doing cosplays with his cousin and boyfriend. And then there's just cosplays that I think would be fun to make and have the dolls wear. I don't have any plans to outright get characters right now but if I did I'd probably shell the boys from hitorijime my hero (I LOVE THEM SO MUCH) and the two couples from waotaku in koi wa muzukashii. But right now, I just have cosplays of them on my list.
My dolls have all their own character (are all characters from my own stories, so to say). I am not the type collector to create my own doll as character which I like....since....first of all, there are too much of them, I will not know where (or with whom) to start. Second......if I start with this, it will never take an end, that's not good XDDDDDDDD The only one I would really really like to let her cosplay is Hikaru (my Volks Cristal) as Lady Oscar....there are several people who already do this but I still want my own version since that's the reason why I had to have Cristal XD Buuuuut I hadn't really have time and muse to improve this project now....too many doll projects hahaha. If there are any other of my dolls who I would like to let them cosplay.....not at this moment, maybe when I have a good idea, hmmmm!!
I dream of making a doll cosplay of Hyakkimaru from Dororo who is essentially is a ball jointed doll other than his core! I've made the dragon form of Haku from Spirited Away so I daydream about maybe one day having a Chihiro to go with him.
@bahboh me too, Hyakki is the perfect character to have a doll match of. Just... I would want to figure out how to make his arms... swords.
Yes! I like to both dress up my dolls in cosplay costumes, and have dolls based on or inspired by my favorite characters. I am also a cosplayer, so for me it's an excuse to build more costumes. Most of the people who commission me for sewing want cosplay costumes for their own dolls; doll cosplay is pretty popular in the hobby. It's been popular since the early 2000s... there are quite a few officially licensed LE character dolls from anime/manga series like Chobits, Rozen Maiden, Black Butler, Madoka Magica, Sailor Moon, Vocaloid, etc.
I'm old school and call it costuming rather than cosplay, but since it's basically the same activity under a different name (despite arguments from both sides of the Costuming V Cosplay devide) yes. I've been entering costumes in competitions at conventions since 1987, it's way too ingrained an activity not to make costumes for my dolls as well. Teddy
My dolls have their own characters but some of them do cosplay! Stan cosplays as Super Craig and Princess Kenny from South Park, Cian cosplays as Wonder Tweek. I would like for Cian to also cosplay as Sora from Kingdom Hearts and Marley as Storm from X-Men but I haven’t made outfits yet.
If you were really, REALLY old-school, you'd be calling it a Court Masque, stan Inigo Jones & Ben Jonson, be drunk on wine for the entirety of the Masque, and only wear/make costumes that cost the equivalent of the annual wages of thirty to three hundred working peasants! (I wrote a research paper on the topic, a few years back.) ETA: for those interested in the evolution of the practice: Mummering > Court Masque / Masque > Masquerade > Fancy Dress > Costuming > Cosplay
{laugh!} I'm old but not that old. It was "costuming" when I first started going to SF conventions, and running costume conventions, so that's the terms I think in. This is me back on those days : Me in my Nightcrawler costume around 1992 My dolls mostly end up with historical and fantsy costumes however. Teddy
My dolls have their own characters but I do want to customize them to an existent character that I like, someday.
I don't buy dolls based on characters but I do enjoy making costumes for my dolls based on my favorite show at the time
Joker and Harley's last Halloween costumes could have been considered cosplay I guess, they were Georgie and Pennywise. I can't ever do it again though. I used Harley's extra head and gave her a Pennywise faceup, and I've recently wiped it. Gone forever lol! But other than occasionally dressing them up for Halloween, they don't cosplay. They just are.
Kinda-sorta ... here's Alice, Claire and Nicholai from the Resident Evil movies. If you can guess which one's which, I've done a good job. :P
Omg I LOVE your Alice cosplay!! I just re-watched all these movies (one of my favorite guilty-pleasure series) and spend the whole time thinking I'd love an Alice doll. I even looked at heads. She's perfect, great job!
No cosplayers here, mine are the characters themselves. But since I'm a cosplayer (and have made or am making costumes of two of the characters I have), there's some mutual benefits where successful pieces get reproduced smaller for the dolls, and the dolls can serve as drafting subjects for me to mock up trickier bits. Oh that is fantastic! I did Nightcrawler back in the early 00s, but yours has mine beat by a mile!
the simple answer to this is yes my boys cosplay, slightly longer answer is that my boy who is home doesn’t have a specific character who is based off so he can/will cosplay anyone, my new boy when he arrives will be based of a character so will always be cosplaying haha
I have both character dolls and cosplay ensembles. My Silent Hill 3 doll, Heather, has done both with her Lisa cosplay.
My most recent girl(heads off topic, but the body is on topic) wear a Meiji school girl Snow White Disney bound. I'll drop a photo in when I get om my computer in a bit. I've made a few doll cosplays, but I haven't be happy with them. I love seeing others interpretations though!
Awww... thanks! Me too - even though I don't necessarily recognize the character the doll is dressed as (so many cases of "not my fandom") Teddy
Thank you! Though I'd say most of the credit goes to Raccoon Doll, since they did the face-up - Alice is a Raccoon Doll Cleaner Nina, but with different eyebrows from a different default face-up. They did a FANTASTIC job, I was totally in love with her the moment I took her out of her box. I have to admit, I was totally taken by surprise by this whole Resident Evil thing. It's about the last fandom on Earth, or so, that I'd expected to ever "fall into", but somehow it happened, and now all I need to be perfectly happy is a Carlos and a Becky for Alice, so she's got her whole "family".
I've made multiple cosplay outfits for one of my sd boys, sort of made it a thing since he goes with me every year. He's got so far - Attack on Titan outfit, makeshift Sephiroth from FF7, Saitama from One Punch, Kingdom Hearts Organization 13 jacket, Crow from Show By Rock, Chocobo Kigurumi, & 2 visual kei band cosplays. Then I made one of my msds a Joker cosplay outfit.
I have a doll based on my favourite game character, Kanato Sakamaki from Diabolik lovers (you can see a photo of him on my insta here (@meltydolly on Instagram: “His teddybear has a secret#kanatosakamaki #diaboliklovers #bjd #bjdphotography #artdoll #doll #dollstagram #lutsdoll #lutsseniordelf…”). Other than him I’m not that interested in making my dolls based on specific characters, although I do like to make them outfits inspired by fairytales and fairytale characters like Alice from Alice in wonderland.
Cosplaying dolls are different from character dolls. A cosplay doll is like any person in a costume, they're not that character, just dressing up as them for a bit.
One of my dolls cosplays. At a convention some years ago, I found a replica of Archer's outfit from Fate/Stay Night that fit one of my boys. That's the only cosplay I have.
Yes, I love cosplay, so my child... I buy some Touken Ranbu related costumes and stuffs just for satisfying this. If people could cosplay, why not do this for our child? They're somehow another us...
I have a doll that I consider sort of like a "mini-me" (granted, she's an elf ) so I plan on having her cosplay at some point. I made sure to give her a neutral faceup so that she can fit into almost any style.
Is it still Cosplay if the doll never takes it off?? I have a Natrume Solas on the 5thMotif Timeless body that I'm (still, and forever) sewing a Solas (Dragon Age) cosplay/costume for. I keep thinking of it as cosplay, since that's where I got my start with sewing, but idk since I guess he's sorta supposed to /be/ the character...
My newest one is! I got a Doll Love You to turn into Edogawa Conan, but decided to make their character a gender fluid Changling that could take on different styles and characters. I'm really excited to see what/who they want to be! Right now they're in a borrowed wig and I made a quick yukata so they wouldn't be naked.
Simple answer: my character dolls also cosplay. Complex answer: Yes! Three of my Gravitation Crew have cosplayed as Roronoa Zoro, Monkey D. Luffy and Sanji from One Piece. One Piece cosplay by Ryuichi Sakuma, on Flickr Add a Haruhi photobomb (she is named after both Haruhi from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and Haruhi from Ouran High School Host Club.) One of my OCs has a 10th Doctor Who suit that I hand-sewed for him, and one of my girls has a Hatsune Miku cosplay I bought for her. I figure that "I'm a character in my life's story and I cosplay, so why can't my Crew be both characters and cosplayers as well?" Ryu
My dolls have their own characters that I've created over the years, but I find myself imagining who of them could cosplay characters from favorite animes such as "Noragami" or "Black Butler" or "Hell Girl". Two of my dolls have actually cosplayed specific characters. My Happydoll Marin girl, Fenchurch, makes a good Sir Integra from the "Hellsing" series -- And my Volks Megu, Tabitha, enjoys being "Hell Girl" --
Wonderful cosplays, but I would love to know where you got your Integra cosplay outfit from. I have a Alucard Minimee that needs an Integra, and I'm sure I can find one of my girls willing to cosplay as her. Alucard from Hellsing by Ryuichi Sakuma, on Flickr I'm probably going to have to commission his red duster and hat, and I've been meaning to make his glasses yellow, I just haven't gotten around to it yet. Ryu
Thank you! My Integra's outfit was improvised from what I had on hand back in 2006, when I first styled her. As a Happydoll girl, she can wear a Volks SD13 boy suit, and I borrowed the tie from a Cheerydoll Hound shirt set. The glasses were from a doll supply/craft shop, and her wig was one that happened to come with her. It was all pretty serendipitous!
Looks like I'm going to keep my eyes open for a gray suit. The tie I think I have, and I can find the glasses and a appropriate wig. I might actually be able to pull this off, so thanks! Ryu
Even though I'll mostly be dressing my new boy as himself, he would be an IDEAL fit for a couple of cosplays of other characters I love... so I might just have to get what I need to dress him as Ian Malcolm for Halloweens at least (especially since I have a doll who never takes off his T Rex costume) I keep meaning to make cosplays for Vince, since that was one of the things I originally intended to do with him, but I never seem to complete one. But I bought some bunny ears to make Pete a White Rabbit costume (he's also been a Sexy Moogle, but that one was more silly than serious).
I cosplay a lot but my dolls don’t because I think cosplay clothes for dolls are very expensive so I prefer to buy the cosplay clothes for myself haha
I'm currently putting together Elena of The Turks from Final Fantasy VII. I am waiting for her shirt and undergarments to be sent from Alice Collections. I also need to alter a man's suit to fit her slim female body. I have everything else I need. I even got her weapon, an automatic pistol, in the post this week. It was meant to be a keychain, but is the perfect scale for her. I'm using Resinsoul Mi. I will definitely post pics when she is complete.
My plans for my first Doll (Leo) are Geralt of Rivia and Goblin Slayer. Later there will be more XD I just want to dress him like I want thats why he don't get a character.
I'm hoping to one day have my doll cosplay as another doll! My SDmidi has a blond bob wig that reminds me of Kit Kittredge from the American Girl brand. I think it would be super cute to get her one of the AG mini dolls and try to replicate Kit's outfit. Then my doll can have her own dolly mini-me and cosplay outfit!
Aww even a little Hewie ❤️ I love Haunting Ground, love that cosplay If I were better at sewing, mine would be cosplaying too. But adapting patterns so that they are sufficient for certain costumes is my knowledge of sewing not good enough.
I love making them cosplay. Especially my EL. He's always the one I've picked on to cosplay. I've taken him to Kawaii Kon back in the day dressed as Hitsugaya from Bleach while I was Matsumoto. I've also had him and others do cosplay for Fullmetal Alchemist, Death Note, Harry potter, Twilight.
I have two dorries who cosplayed in either a photoshoot or a halloween bjd meet in my earlier years as a bjd owner : My gloomcookie Reaiah as Little Dream of the Endless (based on Jill Thompson's Little Endless comic) , and little Hisame as Gaara (Kazekage version). Spoiler: Behold....his purely improvised outfit and prop XD XD XD
I love having my dolls cosplay! It always felt like too much work/$$$ to do it myself but dolls are the perfect size. Here's Asa as Chii And Billie and Nuoyi as Nana and Nana I'm planning to do Hikaru & Misaki from Angelic Layer next
