Contest Customizing Contest: Back to Basics

Jul 30, 2018

    1. Congrats to the winners! You are both amazing!!

My entry was #2, the vampire goth Resinsoul Mi. I’m happy with my ranking and that my girl has a much better faceup than her last one. It was a fun challenge that I took one step further by using only one pastel and one pencil!

Thanks to the mods for the contest, and prize donors for the wonderfully generous prizes for our winners!

    2. My entry was #7. this is actually the first contest I was part of since I joined DoA. little disappointed but I still want to congratulate the winners :) I'm only disappointed by the 1 vote i received but not everything fits everyone's tastes. I still had some fun trying a face up for only the second time and trying new things with it.

    3. Congratulations to the winners! :thumbup

Extra kudos to you @Cloudedmind for painting that style with pastels. That must have taken forever …

I'm one of the three members who entered for fun only, mine is the second entry. :) I didn't feel like doing anything over the top with pastels and had a style in mind that I had wanted to try for some time.

BTW: Do you also have the feeling that a lot of members miss out on the Anniversary events and thus on the voting? My friends often seem confused when I tell them that there are contests taking place on DoA …

    4. Congratulations for two very well-deserved wins! :cheer

It was so interesting to see all the different techniques. It gave me ideas for things to try in the future! Mine was #13, the purple-haired Elfdoll Vivian. :)

@evie the kid I have that feeling too. I don't know how they can miss them!

    5. @evie the kid And two cans of MSC.:aeyepop: I really do want to try again though, now that I'm not pressed for time.

    6. Oh my, I never actually thought I'd win since I've been in the hobby for over a decade and never won anything the entire time. XD Especially when there were so many amazing works done this time! Thank you everyone who voted for me! Yay!

Congratulations to the other winner too! Your work is so cool! :D

    7. Congrats to the winners! The work this year was amazing.

Mine was no. 10. The grumpy cyberpunk elf dude.

And as I mentioned, mostly I'm extremely happy because I found a new way to apply pastels so that they can be made to appear like they've been airbrushed on - well with refinement hopefully that'll be the case. Though there's already hints of that on my entry with the multiple shades of green on the 'scales'.

Basically in order to do my guy's tattoos I applied several layers of dry pastel over the head after I'd already finished and sealed the rest of his face up - and masked off the head with a combination of masking tape... and that gloopy liquid masking stuff painted on in the negative of the scales design. To my relief and surprise the liquid masking withstood the vigorous dry brushing application of the pastels and came off exactly as intended. The slightly rough, but oh so full of potential results are visible in my entry.

    8. Congrats to the winners. It was interesting to see all the different approaches to this challenge. Mine was the first just for fun entry. :3 I personally only ever use pastels for face ups (with the exceptions of an airbrush and acrylics if I'm doing something special), so the materials were very familiar to me. But like @Vetinari I also played with some masking tape to achieve the smooth pattern. Not a technique I use a lot, but I have dabbled with it before -usually for bodyblush. :D It had some issues with the rounded shapes where the pastel dust went under the masking tape because I had to 'bend' it. To get the result, there was a lot of painstaking cleaning, both with a regular eraser and a magic eraser.

      Thank you :3

    9. A few things I meant to say earlier but was headed into work and didn't have time:

#17- I thought your cat was really pretty. I always have trouble with anthros, and you did a great job! The eyeshadow is so pretty and very feline.

#20- I also started the hobby in 2008, and I think you nailed the look! (and the lips are flawless. <3 )

#23- I really like the concept you chose, and the colors are perfect for that. Painting the headcap was an interesting idea, and I'm not sure what you did to cause that shimmery affect on it, but I like it!

#27- I love the henna concept and all the intricate detail. That must have taken forever! But well worth it, as it looks so pretty.

#28- The vibrant colors and the way they fade from red to black is so cool!

#34- Your girl looks so gentle and sweet, I like how the colors are very subtle and soft. They suit her sculpt very well.

@Yenna I really liked your entry, especially the eyelashes and eyeliner. How did you get the lines so even and smooth and not at all grainy? Are they done with pastels??

    10. Congrats to the winners! I was #14, the redhead with the bags under his eyes. I needed a push to redo his blushing. I think I will do some touching up now that the contest is over.

    12. Mine was #16, the white chrysanthemum. The sculpt was supposed to be a werewolf, but I love how the work came out, so now I'm looking around for another head for the character!

@Lawrichai I'm super flattered you like it!

    13. =^.^= I do, I do!
Your petals are so delicate <3

    14. Thank you! And congrats on your prize! :D

All in all, this contest was a lot of fun, and I learned some new techniques that will serve me well in the future. I legit had no idea pastels worked so smoothly when using them as paint. They just need to be good quality, and sanded very very fine. My Blick pastels worked better than the Myungo. I might try the technique using Flow-Aid next time too.

    15. @CloakedSchemer : I voted for your girl, I really liked the classic Gothic beauty.

    16. Thank you so much, I really appreciate your vote. <3

    17. Good job to everyone.

I entered the robot boy towards the end. I only had so long to really do it considering I rolled into other contests and fought with high humidity for spraying. But I'm proud o fmy work. :) Had lots of fun!

    18. It's cool to put a name to everyone's entries! I was entry #25, the Yanji with the freesia flowers on the side of his face. Thank you, @Christina_Xx for your kind words! I really appreciate it! :)

    19. I didn't want to make anyone else feel like I didn't like theirs, because I surely did. But the flower on his face and those beautiful eyebrows and---Doll-Family is just a really special company to me. The Freesia really popped out. Great job.

    20. I voted for 24, 25, and 27, though there were many others I liked, like the pink gore one and the freckly natural ones. And the winners, of course.

    21. Yes, congratulations to the winners - and to everyone else for being awesome too!

    22. Wow, thank you so much! You totally made my day! I'm so glad you liked it. :)

Thank you so much for vote! (I was 25!)

    23. I did vote for the 1st winner, but it wasnt my first nor second choice, but my third. Its quite interesting to see how the 3 votes system works like cause it doesnt really matter if you like one more than the other two you voted for, in the end its really a matter of the one who is choose the most (and you dont have the chance to not vote in 3, so its like, the one who is the 3rd choice for many may win from some that was closely the 1st choose of less people).
Anywah, congrats everyone for their beautiful works and specially the winners!

    24. Thank you so much!!!
It was a lot of time, and so much fun. I've added quite a bit too, but took pictures at that stage to get my entry in on time.

There were so many amazing and talented entries, and the level of skill was awe inspiring. Thanks to everyone who entered, and thanks to everyone who voted. I am shocked and humbled to have gotten as many votes as I did. The competition was incredible and I have so many favorites for so many different reasons.

    25. @onion bulb I loved your entry too! It was my vote for it to win, such a clean concept and very delicate like the flower itself it was so nice and made me so happy to see it, I hope you keep the faceup even after the contest is done, its such a beautiful idea and how you made it I hope to see your faceup store open up when you feel like it :D

9, who came second place was my favorite and makes me want to get a granado, congratulations on winning! You have amazing skill and really show the potential in the granado sculpts, and I love your enthusiasm through out

I also voted for 4 because i know how difficult it is to make body blushing look decent and 4 looked amazing, so realistic and clean and Im sure even looks better in person because of all the details

My entry was 24 I saw some antique dolls and wanted to copy their faceup. Im crap at eyebrows and felt the antique doll look was good for that creepy old look and something I can do with only pastels haha

    27. My precious Gouhuai from Painted Wings just made it home and I'm so happy they offered him as a prize this year
He's so adorable, and he's got four set of teeth/tongue you can change. So many possibilities...
I will need to do him justice and be careful for his faceup.

My thanks to everybody who gave a vote to Athanatos' faceup. I am so grateful! <3
