Contest Bare Minimum: Photography Contest

Jul 31, 2018

    1. That's kinda what I was thinking. Green screen is pretty major. So where is the line drawn?

      • x 2
    2. @Lanilu Yes, you can edit out your doll stand in the picture.

@OkamiKodomo and @evie the kid You'll have to forgive me, this is my first time running this kind of contest and I want to be as inclusive as I can be. The thing I wanted to avoid with major edits was people entering works that were more digital art than photography. I realize that the green screen is actually a pretty major edit, it just feels to me like a pretty traditional technique so I thought it would be good to allow it. At this point I don't think anyone will be disqualified based on the type of editing they do to their image. Just remember that the focus is on capturing the beauty of your subject with traditional photography, and try to be in the spirit of that.

If anyone has questions about a photo they are thinking of entering they should post it in Ask the Moderators and I'll look it over.

    3. Were we supposed to add a poll to our entry?

    4. No, the poll option is just there by default.

All you are require to submit are your pictures :)

    5. Correct, just be sure to fill out all the questions and submit your image @Csiminae

    6. My dolls have body piercing that are removable in the sense that they are glued on, but I don't want to removed them and potentially damage their body blushing. Are body piercings ok?

    7. Is it okay to tie a ribbon in doll's hair? If it doesn't cover the body at all, just a small part of hair and above the head.

    8. I'm so excited for this one! I took my pictures last Sunday and now I just need to get them onto a computer for making my choice and editing. :)

    9. It's the making the choice that's hard! I took photos yesterday and now I have a shortlist of 5 including 2 that I really can't decide between. One is probably the better composition and shows off the body better but I think the other has more personality...

Ah well - at least I can post all the photos in a gallery thread once the contest is over.

    10. Welp, everything is in order and my trip complete. Time to do this before it is too late! :aeyepop:

      • x 1
    11. @Saaya-chan Yes, those piercings are okay to leave on your doll.

@Aridea Unless the ribbon is already attached as part of your doll's wig then it will not be allowed for this contest.

    12. It was so hard to decide on a motif for this contest … I tried different ideas for the "basic" concept, but then came back to my first series of photos.
I'm so curious to see everbody's pictures!

    13. Okay, just want to clarify before I submit cuz I don't want to get this wrong. I don't have a camera, just a cell phone. I think it's okay to use that, right? And in the lenses and whatnot question I just put what I did if I changed exposure and such?

    14. @Adell Yes, it's perfectly fine to use your cell phone camera! Just write whatever information you know that applies. You don't need to write that you have adjusted the exposure.

    15. Okay, thank you so much.

I can't wait to see everyone's fabulous photos! :whee:

    16. Done, before my work would have prevented me. Can't wait to see all of the entries!

    17. @AlisonVonderland Thank you for reply! :)

I just submitted my entry, good luck everyone :dance

    18. Finally submitted my entry! Embarrassingly, it took me awhile to come up with the title. D;

Can't wait to see the entries; all the best, everyone!! :cheer

    19. Can we submit a second entry as "just for fun"?

      • x 2
    20. I saw the answer about photoshop use must be minimum in the spirit of the basic, but are we allowed to make big alterations like when its only in the background and doesnt affect the overall feeling? Is not like manipulation, but just to fix things because since the deadline is close I cant make a perfect bg so I want to be able to fix things like the spaces between some things, or like photographers do to clean up a picture (copying and paste some bg parts to make it look like there isnt some things showing up as they actually are). Is this allowed or is it considered too much?

Sorry for this, saw the last answer related to editing now and I think it says enough about it. Thank you!

    21. :O Is it normal for your entry to disapear? All the sudden i can't see it anymore :S

    22. Yes - that means the mods have processed it. Mine has gone too - it means the voting thread is being prepared, so not long before we see everyone's work.

    23. ohhhw okey panic mode for nothing xD I kinda thought it had to be something like that, but still the alarm bells went off xD

Oehhh i'm sooo curious to see what everyone did with this amazing theme! :D And also verry curious what people will think of my picture ofcourse ^.^

    24. Yes @*Kazuki* - the entries are now being moved to the area for voting, so they appear to disappear before voting begins. Nothing to worry about!

    25. We can still enter yes?!

      • x 1
    26. Thanks AlisonVondeland! :D

    27. Can't wait to see the entries! I am honestly not very good at photography, so mine is probably going to look like a pile of garbage in comparison, but it was still a lot of fun to set up and I'm glad I tried. I'm always amazed by photography entries and the magic you guys seem to be able to work!

    28. I just submitted mine and now I'm nervous lol! I am so excited to see everyone's photos! Good luck everyone <3

    29. I'm wondering if I'm gonna finish editing in time XD

    30. Phew - I made it in time! ^_^ I'm so excited for this contest, and I'm not great photographer, but I knew I HAD to try!

    31. @AlisonVonderland I submitted my entry around 3, and just wanted to check and make sure everything's good with my entry. Please let me know when possible, thanks!

    32. I submmited mine just now, and realized I should have made just one tiny adjust before doing so, but whatever, now its gone.
      GOOD LUCK EVERYONE :thumbup

    33. @jade-eyed-cat I've reviewed your entry and everything looks good!

    34. Oh good, I'm glad to hear that! When it seemed to stay in the queue for hours on end, it had me worried!:XD:

    35. @AlisonVonderland

if it is okay, can you please review to see if my photo is appearing? :eusa_pray

I edited to add some information and I am worried maybe because of edit, the photo is not showing

Also, worried if I check in different browser, I might get DQ so I prefer to ask here if it is possible that the photo is showing

edit to add: :chocoberry:cake::truffleThank you for confirming the photo for me:abow:

    37. How long does it usually takes for the votation to be up (not trying to hurry anyone, just dont know what to expect since its my first time)?
Do we (who joined) vote too?
I'm so curious about how many people joined since the sock contest had like 70 people and I'm expecting more for this one :ablink:

      • x 1
    38. @flornosertao usually when it is up, there will be a post in this thread to let you know :)

You usually know if you see new posts saying "wow entries are so good, i didnt know who to vote for good luck my comrades!" then you know its up for viewing and people are voting without going further back to see if you missed the post.

It takes time, but try to be patient. I dont think anyone knows 100%, because there will be more entries to check if everything is good to go and to separate the fun/prize entries

Any member on the forum can vote, you can even vote for yourself but it is better not to, to see how many people actually like your work haha unless you are desperate for one of the prizes. Personally, I love a few of the prizes, so I made a point to buy from 2 of the sponsors because I never saw their dolls before, hopefully sometimes this month :)

    39. I'm so bored now that i sent my entry, I'm even thinking about joining the cosplay contest (though i find hard cause i dont have a lot of recycled material to use and how am i supposed to do this in two days lol).

I was asking in case they had set themselves a timeline like "we are hoping to post in less than 5 hours after the deadline", but I guess not... Its just that the more it takes the more I think the competition is too hard and i have no chance (sorry, I have anxiety).

All the contest prizes are amazing, but im in love with this foxys and I cant buy internationally this years so I probably dont get another chance to have it, which means, yes, im desesperate! But I dont think I will vote for myself if there is enough outstanding entries, is not like i would have a chance anyway so better level up the game for the ones who are worth the prize.

    40. @flornosertao Dont get discouraged! I’ve been around for awhile been entering contests for four years now, and the results have been surprising to say the least. Truth is, everybody has different tastes so you just never know who might win. There have been contests when I’ve been so sure a particular entry would win it, and they didn’t rank top ten. My first year in the sewing contest, I thought I’d rank towards the bottom and I was #4!! Sometimes, I think we are our own work critics. We see everything about our entry we wish we’d done differently, but others can see it for the beauty in it. Likewise, you don’t know what voters are looking for. In this contest, some people will look for the best lighting, some the clearest photo, some the best diorama, some the prettiest doll. Don’t be too hard on yourself, everybody has a chance! Being a winner does require talent and skill, but also a little luck. :thumbup

    41. thank you so much for your kinds word, it does cheer me up and give me a bit of hope! Even if I dont win, I hope to get a good place so I wont feel discouraged for the next year, but the thing is, there is no way for everyone to get a good position so someone will be in the bottom and it doesnt necessary means it is because theh are bad, but because the others are a little bit better or as you said, it was just not what people were searching for. I wish there was some kind of feedback *_*

    42. @flornosertao Something I do when entering contests (not just the ones on this site, but anywhere) is set a personal goal for it. Something I want to learn from it. Then I can validate myself by how well I achieve my personal goal, rather than how well I do in the contest itself and feel I achieved something (working towards my personal goal) even if I don't do as well as I'd like in the contest. You just never know how voting will turn out.

    43. for me having joined my first doa contest is already a great achievement, specially when it was after having gone through some pretty bad things the week before (which is basically why i only joined last minute). I'll be happier if I'm able to join the cosplay contest too, since doa made so many contests, joining only one feels kind regretful  so I'm doing some researchs to see what i can do

      • x 2
    44. @flornosertao It is good to set a goal, and in some contests, votes do end up scattered pretty evenly, but in others, it seems like a few people have most of the votes, then everybody like 10th place and down have about the same numbers. If you'd like feedback, once the contest is over and winners are announced, I think you could post your photos in the Critique section of the workshop subforum to get advice on what to work on and how to fix it, as well as hear what you already do well. People over there seem to be very nice and helpful. @Kitazawa gives great advice and has helped me improve personally in the past, and they have about the same outlook on contests as I do--winning is a bonus, but the guidelines often force you to try new techniques, which in turn can really help you improve and find what works best for you. I only joined one contest the first year, it was overwhelming enough worrying about getting it finished and submitted correctly! Now, if I don't have too much going on elsewhere, I do try to enter them all, even though I'm definitely better in some sections than others! :sweat I think it's still a big accomplishment to enter even one, considering how much time real life demands from most of us. (And as for the angel cosplay, there's still time! I think I threw mine together in about 45 minutes, it's nothing spectacular at all, but with this year's anniversary theme being back to basics, I think something simple and fun is plenty good!)

    45. Are the entries up for viewing yet?

      • x 1
    46. yeah, i do think there is time, but since i dont feel confortable modeling i need my big sis (i was going to use my little sis but now i changed the concept) but she is feeling ill and not being cooperative lol
But tomorrow is day off in my city, so maybe we can work that out tomorrow... I will just write my ideas somewhere to not forget hehe
I'm happy now that you all being so supportive, thank you so much <3

      @Luckyl they arent yet

    47. @Luckyl We're currently getting all the entries ready for voting. :)

    50. Wow, there are so many great entries! I know one pic I'm voting for sure, need to choose the other ones...

    51. Wow! 106 entries and they are so beautiful and creative.

Some made me smile, a few made me laugh, lots made me gasp at the beauty and the creativity.

I'll come back to them to think about voting at some point (and how to choose just 3 I don't know!) but for now I'm just going to go and look through the thread again to enjoy such beautiful photos.

    52. I think I choose! Im asking my friends between my top 5 to make sure im choosing the best 3, im not voting on myself cause really, amazing pics there!

    53. Wow, so many wonderful entries! It will be hard to vote. :smallcake

    54. Question: when we vote in the other contests it doesnt show the result yet, but for this one its showing, is it supposed to be like this?

      • x 1
    55. 106 entries! That's unbelievable! :o It's really interestng how everybody interpreted the theme.

    56. Holy cow there are so many o.o

    57. :O holy sh*t so many beautifull entries! :O There are definitly a few i would hang on the wall if i found them in a shop!

    58. Im shocked no one referenced that iconic scene from Titanic

I love all of the entries it really is hard to pick only three overall

Not shocked at the amount of entries, the prizes are so good and the theme was a fun challenge that was not restrictive

    59. I'm also questioning the being able to see results
