Your Photoshoot Nightmares

Apr 24, 2008

    1. ahahaha i was having fun with photobucket lolz
      [IMG]

    2. Once I took a doll into an art gallery, and the lighting was really dim, but the surroundings were so cool that I took out my camera and... the guards almost confiscated it because no pictures allowed :(

    3. Not even weather can stop me! HOHO! I have been taking photos in pouring rain.. Thou, I was under a bridgethingie and it just looked neat!

But people. People is the biggest problem I'v come across... Like my last shoot, I was taking some nice, half-sunny pictures on this little pathway in a forest not far from here and some lady stopped her car about.. 20-30 feet from me. I dunno why, I think she was just parking. But she kept STARING. She stood there for the 20-25 minutes I was photographing and just staring *_* I almost shouted some well chosen words at her. Thank god I was walking to the opposite direction of her :( Would'v been the MOST akward thing EVER to walk by her @_¤ she'd be all ":o/:?!!" and I'd be just ":|" carrying a 64cm tall man in girly clothes :'DD Actually not akward, HILARIOUS. >8D I have to do that the next time I see someone staring... Walk near by them. Just to see how they react.... /plotting

    4. Nyuu I still haven't taken Emma out on many photoshoots, but every time I do decide to do one, something goes wrong *facepalm*

First Attempt/First night home: I learned the horrors of using flash on pale resin. Can you say "light orb?"
I tried to take photos without flash, but my camera has this horrible thing where it gets VERY BLURRY even if you set it on a tripod, put a timer and ran away. Blech

Second Attempt/Few weeks later: I found an adorable skirt I absolutely loved, and I posed her looking away from me (back at camera) and, low and behold...I could see her bottom! Apparently the skirt was made for much smaller dolls, like barbies ><

Third Attempt/Not long ago: I tried to pose her on a rubics cube so I could have her at a good level to 'play' the piano for my photo. Of course, Emma wasn't keen on practicing, so she toppled over. Five or six times. Eventually I gave up *facepalm* (I actually have a shot from that shoot in the 'I fell and went boom' thread!

Most recent Attempt/Few days ago: She decided that her wig was going to stick up in all directions and that a kitty needed to inspect. I'm sure she beckoned Ferris (like Ferris Bueler's Day off, though he's called Ferris Drooler for obvious reasons) and he drooled all over her wig. Ewww.

The most common 'nevermind' thing is when my camera decides to be uberblurry. I tend to favor my camera-phone for that reason (my icon is from a camera phone, while my old icon was blurry and from a digital camera. Blech)

    5. eheh thats so cute!

    6. :3 Nyuuu~~

    7. I was taking a picture on this small rock in the middle of a tiny pond. While posing, my girl's hand fell of into the water. I got wet, she got wet. Not the best photo shoot. :sweat

    8. That's true in most places, and this would be why...

I live right next to a cemetery (I love it :XD:) but I remember when I went over to introduce myself to the groundkeeper, we got into a conversation and he said the only reason the cemetery was ever closed was because the kids wanted to ride their bikes across the graves. Miles, and miles of paths, and they want to ride their bikes across the graves, unbelieveable. :vein

My photoshoot nightmare was having a doll face-plant on concrete. No, she couldn't fall over in the grass. And heaven forbid she fall backward onto the cushion of her wig. Nope, forward bound - face, meet concrete. Miraculously, she was absolutely fine. Looked so good you would have thought she just popped out the box, though I had arrhythmia for the next hour.

    9. The most scarys thing for me...well...My friend and i were taking pictures of Crow in her backyard...we found a little frog and set it in her hands...It Started crawling up her arm and onto her face. It stayed on her wig for a few minutes then jumpied to the camera! I screamed and dropped the camera!

I hate frogs! (But the pictures were great!)

    10. hardwood floors + barefooted dolls + sucky sueding = nightmare.
One of the major challenges of this hobby has got to be posing dolls D:
Especially when the dolls have been hot glue sueded many times. x.x; Pretty much made a photostory into a nightmare.
This may not have been one of my more brilliant ideas, but I just used my kneadable eraser and stuck it in their joints. xD

    11. My dollie taking a nose dive on a hard surface, right about the time I'm about to take a picture.

    12. My biggest problem is having a shitty camera, first.
Second, it's almsot winter here, so I can't go outside and I never got a chance to take Niri outside since I got her November 3th. Anyway.

I usually have problems with lightning, as always, and I don't have a very steady hand, so I use my tripod or my mom's mini tripod, which is worth to buy, btw. Or it's some boxes or anything that has the right level to put the camera on.

Unlike most of the members, I don't have any cats, even if I have 10 animals at home. So no problem with that.

A huge problem is that my doll can't be put in a lot of positions; the elastics are thight, but if I loosen them she'll fall apart. I'm a bit sad about that. And her wig is always falling, so that's bothering when you try to take pictures.

    13. Hmm...I don't have problems that often. But once at Disney at the Lilo and Stitch dining restaurant somebody hit the table and Lyr flopped his head right into the butter! Though his wig smelled good, I had to wash it out when I got home :sweat

    14. [IMG]

I had just taken delivery of her and rushed out to take pics of her in this dress I had made. And right after this she fell smack, bang into our fishpond. Did I scream!!!!

:o:o:o My husband thought I'd at least had a heart attack. Almost gave him one!!!

Anyway she was alright and lives to tell the others the tale!!!
      ;)

    15. Oh man...one photo shoot I found this great bush sort of thing in my backyard with all sorts of flowers, it was super pretty. There was also a bunch of thorns growing in around it...so Lisi's wig got stuck, of course. While I was trying to unstick her wig, I FELL IN. At the time it hurt a lot and totally wasn't funny at all, but now I think it's hysterical.

    16. That actualy gave me an idea for a shoot lol :sweat

that's so sad! I'm sorry that happened to you.

    17. Lighting, lighting, lighting! There's really no place in my house that gets enough natural light for photos. So I bought a light tent & photo lamps & the cats decided that it was a nice warm place for them to sleep. And they did NOT want to move. Even with quicky flash shots they like to investigate & take over.

When I do take my dolls outside for a shoot, the shadows from the trees shift & I end up with strange shadows on the faces. Also wind is a problem. I get everything set up, the wigs smooth & the wind kicks up undoing all my work. Though I do have to admit that a couple of times that worked in my favor with blowing mohair wigs giving a great sense of movement.

And sometimes outdoor backgrounds look really good to the eye but when you see the pic, it looks hideous.

    18. It's illegal to be in the cemeteries in Utah after sundown as well. However I like sunrise light best so it's never been a problem for me.:)

With me it's Nicco's head, I swear that EVERY time I get out the camera he decides to look at the ceiling! I get him posed all cute, click, oh look he's looking at the ceiling again! :doh

    19. OMG...I would die if my camera ever fell into water! I finally got my dream cam, a Nikon D40 DSLR, and currently my doll didnt cost near the amount of my camera nor would it suffer the same collateral damage of the camera...I think I'd choose the camera in this same situation >_>...I must seem to be a horrible doll owner :(

    20. Nope! I had the same thought! All of my cameras cost more than either of my dolls. And though it's a pain in the butt to unstring and dry the doll, ITS so much better than buying a new camera!:o

    21. Box opening in the back of a dark car at night. XD My camera refuses to shut off the flash so she looks like a glowing orb all the time. It's too bad because she's absolutely darling.

    22. Hah, my fiance and I were trying to take a picture of one of our cats knocking a flying doll out of the sky... We dropped the cat in front of the backdrop like 9 million times, and then we tried tying him to a harness and hanging him there... He just flopped... Too good-natured x.x;!

    23. Mine was a shoot I did in a local cemetery. I wanted to get a shot of my twins in front of this tomb that had a low fence in front of it, so I set them up sort of leaning against the bars with their arms around the bars and their cheeks pressed against them. In retrospect, this was probably *not* the greatest idea ever, since said fence is several decades, possibly even a century old, and all rusted. So , I get the shot set up perfectly and I'm about to start clicking happily away when suddenly, one of the boys decides he wants to sit down and rest. Of course, *scraaaaaape* goes his face down the rusty bars of the fence.
      Me::oOhshitohshitohshit! *rushes over*
      Him: *innocent look*
His Twin: *waiting patiently for the shoot to continue*

I about had a heart attack, but luckily, there was just a liitle scrape of rust on his face and it came off and left a pretty much invisible mark on his face that isn't even noticeable unless I point it out. Needless to say, they don't go anywhere near anything rusty now.

My other one was at a recent meet, when I had them standing for photos and the other of the twins decided to faceplant nose-first onto a wood floor.:doh I swear they're trying to kill me with anxiety.

*sigh* ALL of my nightmares seem to happen when those two are involved in the shoot.

    24. I had plenty of that experience.

      From falling dolls to causing accidental damage to the owner's dolls (I'm not a doll owner but i like to take photos of BJDs) =___=;;;;

      I feel so guilty especially when there is quite a damage done. Then again, it's my fault for choosing a windy location for a shoot U__U;;;

      Kicky legs and unco-operative dolls is another matter as well. Sometimes they just refuse to pose for you >_>;;

    25. A group standing shot, when one decides to go down, aims for another one, and suddenly you have domino-dollage, and all you can do is try to grab the ones that seem to be falling face foward!

    26. When I got my first doll last summer I brought him outside for his first ever pictures and a bird pooped on him (seriously!) :( Poor thing! He just got it on the arm of his little kimono thing, it wiped off pretty easily once it dried in. I was raging at the time but we can both see the funny side now! ^_^

    27. Sabriel was standing up for a shoot on my dresser. I was nervous anyway because he'd done a couple nose dives (caught him every time) before while standing. So I pose him (not contorted or anything, simplely standing up) and turn around to get my camera and out of the corner of my eye I see him tip forward. I drop the camera (on the bed) and lunged for him. I caught him (thank GOD!) but his head cap and wig flew off.

Nothing was broken, he was fine, but I still find little pieces of dirt in his wig. :|

    28. strong wind or heavy rain are major nightmares when shooting photos outdoor...
but the MOST scary thing is...
when you have taken lots of stunning picture,
your camera is gone, or your SD card is out of order...lol

    29. i duno if this counts but..
last night tried to do a shoot with my puki on the ground (there was no where without clutter on a surface)
my cat got jelouse and wanted in on it so she wouldnt leave and tried to sit on my poor Una, finally got her out of the way start taking some shots while racing the sun setting since i only had natural light to work with! Then forgot that i was cooking a pizza so half way through the shoot i had to go get it out of the oven and my cat thought "NOWS MY CHANCE!" and she raced in with claws out batting around the bulbasaur i was using as a prop and trying to NOM poor Unas hair! everything went FLYING and she up ended the pillow case i was using with everything on top of it. -_-
i had to look back at the pics i already took to recreate everything the way it was..

the only good thing was Una was finally posing the way i wanted her to without any troubles!

oh yea. also forgot that after everything i loaded the pics on my computer and turned out someone played with my camera settings before hand and everything was tiny with crappy resolution *thumbs up* =D

    30. When taking my first photos of my SD Lucca my two dogs came bounding over to investigate why I wasn't paying attention to them. The first was mildly curious and didn't seem all that interested in the doll rather than trying to get into my lap every time I tried to take a picture. The second however thought it was evil and that he must protect me from it by getting in the middle and growling at it.

    31. Poor cats, they're little demons but they can't help it ;)

Actually, mine was the wind. First outdoor photoshoot with my girls (a puki and a littlefee) and I had them posing on a ledge on our porch. The wind came and my J'Tem (LF) took a backwards dive.. and broke her ankle :...( My husband ran inside pretty quickly after that.

    32. Same :sweat

It was wonderfull sunny weather, but the wind was to harsh.. I've put her on conrete, turned my back for just 1 second to grab my camera.. ANS WOOSH. I though I died!! :...(

1 word for bumps in resin: BOIL!
      Amazing, my girl got saved.

    33. Wind=evil. I superglued her back but didn't realize I had missed a piece when I was gathering her up so I have to try and get replacement leg now.

    34. Lighting...I hate you. Everytime I see a fluorescent light I want to bash it. >=(

Edit: The reason I hate fluorescent lighting is because my friend recently got her first doll; I rushed over with my camera to take pictures for the opening then realized her entire house has fluorescent lights...that made for one hell of a photoshoot.

    35. My dog's butt. Seriously.

Every time I take a photo outside on our park she somehow manages to get her butt in the shot!

    36. Lol, don't get me started. XD My cat is such an attention whore; I have to delete more than half my photos I've taken for a shoot because Luna's somehow managed to ninja her way into the frame.

    37. Oh! What does flourescent lighting do? Too dark? :sweat

    38. Most people just get the regular fluorescent bulbs that can give a greenish cast to pictures. There ARE warmer bulbs, or daylight-balanced bulbs, which are more neutral in light tone, but most people don't bother with them unless they're thinking specifically of plant lighting or taking pix.

But every camera has a control, however basic, to adjust the "white balance" and there's usually a setting for fluorescent lighting, as well as for overcast, incandescent lights, etc. Scrolling through the options usually gives a screen review, and you have to choose whatever seems to give the most natural look with the lighting at hand.

    39. Has a tendency to turn my WS Dollzone boy an interesting shade of blue....:(

    40. You might check your settings if you can find something for "white balance" that can be adjusted to counteract the blue tint! :)

    41. Mine is more of a light rig nightmare. I have a light tent I use and it has all this velcro around the edges for some of the peices for it... every time I try and reach in to move stuff around it grabs me! so i'm hanging half out with this velcro attached to my hat, my hair once my coat and my sleeve. and I always have some doll precariously balanced just so.. that if i jerk it off there going to go toppling down!

    42. Yah, I need to reread my owner's manual, it's been so long since I read it! Never had the problem until now so...

    43. my nightmare is that the tip over....or when you finally have them in th epose you want.the camera runs out off power...I hate that

    44. My biggest problems are usually the lighting (whenever I borrow a school camera it isn't that big of a problem but mine has the most annoying settings) so if it's too bright outside they look like they're glowing, especially iiru since he's WS.
And another time when I was trying to get some pics it was sooo windy outside and Nayo had so many flyaways. Ended up not being able to use most of the pictures ><
Plus long wigs in general are a pain to keep neat.

    45. I was takng a few photos inside one day and here comes my dog. She wanted to sniff June, we had to swat her away...cats are also a big one

    46. Um...yeah, we went to take pictures down by Lake Lanier while it was partially dry, and there must have been a yellow jacket's nest near where I was standing, because we got attacked by them. I got stung five times, my girlfriend got stung 24 times, and we left poor Gre (my gf's doll) there to be rescued hours later by my gf's sister.

Ever since, I've been terrified. My yard at home has wasps, and I went out today to take a few pictures of my doll Regan, but I saw one coming and took off.

    47. I once had a pretty nice set up going for my dolls, and just as I was about to seat them on the chair, this happened:

On the bright side, now I have a photo to enter in the cat calendar contest.

But my mom also planted a really pretty garden outside of her condo, and it gets butterflies and gorgeous light. But the two little kids in the condo next door are always there x.x If they aren't outside, they're in the window waiting for someone to go outside so they can talk to them. So there's never any peace for photography.

    48. I've had pretty good luck as far as lighting and weather goes, I'm always sure to pick a good spot and day. I like, scope it out at least a week beforehand to find out all the scary hazards lmao ORZ <--[bigcreepyloser]

My biggest enemy is myself. I have the shaky hands of someone who just downed 20 cups of coffee or something TT___TT I always have to delete a slew of my photos because they end up really blurry!

    49. my navyblue bed sheet. it looks like the night. only problem is too much cat hair, and it has way too much folds!
fotr the bees and yellow jakets, put a trap. they like sprite. and yelow jaket traps can be bught like, anywehr. as for bees, HONEY!

    50. Army-of-Me if a bird poops on you it means good luck xD!

    51. This didn't actually happen during a photo shoot, but it happened right before and I had to adjust all my pictures because of it. But I was getting my Soom Gena ready to take some pictures down in Vegas and one of her fingers snapped off. So all the pictures of that day have her right hand hidden. It really sucked, seeing as I love hand pictures......

    52. yeah, it means good luck getting the bird poop off your doll ;)

    53. The Pictures say all :'B

    54. The wind doesn't like me very much XD I took Karyuu out for a photoshoot ona rock in my backyard one day. It was at the end of summer/beginning of aumtumn and the light from the sunset was PERFECT! But the wind decided to keep blowing his wig off. When the wind stops and I start getting good shots of him, I realize I leave his bright blue comb in half the pictures..

    55. While doing a photoshoot once my boy Kingston took a nose dive onto cement because of the wind. And another time I was taking pictures of my boy Yuli on a bridge and he fell into the creek below. Needless to say I took him home right away and washed him. Ugh it was bad.

    56. Little children. :|

I was at a doll meet at the mall and we found a batmobile ride. One of the girls put her doll in it and we all stepped back to take pictures, then all of a sudden this little girl comes running over and grabs his head! We all screamed "NODON'TTOUCHTHAT!" but we weren't quick enough. She pulled off his head cap and wig and he fell off the ride onto the ground.

We all freaked out and the little girls was like
O_O "I thought he was part of the ride!"
Sure she did. That's why there was a bunch of us holding other dolls, taking pictures. Right.

In the end he was alright and we got some amusing pictures. The dad appologized profusely, but I was still mad! xD I. Hate. Little. Kids.

    57. my worst to date isnt as bad as some, but still frustrating.

my roommate and i went the MO botanical gardens for a small dollshoot, each bringing one doll. it was a disaster from the start. windy as hell and crowded. there were three, THREE weddings and a huge crowd of visiters. and i swear they got in the way on purpose. but the wind was the worst. my normally stands-like-a-rock Breakaway on a B&G body wouldnt stay up for anything, no matter where/how i had him. but the worst...before i could any shots at all, even decent ones, with people walking in front of me, and him falling all over the place...my battery died. so all the struggle was for nothing anyway and didnt get ANY pictures XD

    58. Oh my GOD my latest America's Next Top Doll Model shoot was a total nightmare. I had a little meltdown and everything (which probably had more to do with life than the shot) and it was a disaster.

What happened was that I had a viral infection, so I had to rest most of the challenge week, and then I thought I was better and trained with my horse Rocket on barrels for like 3 hours, and then got sick again since I wasn't really better. I had my whole shot envisioned in my head entirely - but the craft stores had nothing I needed. My walmart stopped carrying fabric. I was losin' it xD, and had less than a day to do the shoot.

I just could not execute my photo the way I desired. I used a black sheet as a backdrop, not the best choice with a dark kimono and dark computer, but no other color would work any better, and it picked up every hair in the house shed by my 5 dogs and 4 cats.

I could not get Xia Li to pose like I wanted and hold it, and I was getting super frustrated. I was rough with her and kind of insulted her, which I feel terrible about now.

Post processing did not go well - none of my photomanipulation or graphics techniques worked at ALL. I was an award winning icon artist, I had like 43 first places in a year, but I could not do this and it was making me nuts. I suppose it's because the icons I made were mostly done using art rather than photos.

My mom liked the finished product, but I hate it. It's not what I wanted at all, but I should have given myself much more time. I am such a perfectionist though and if it's not on par with my standard, I hate showing it. I just hope she makes it to the next round!

    59. The wind's always a problem, especially now since I live a block from the beach... It messes with my dolls' hair and sometimes it's strong enough to knock my Kid Delf over. The heat impedes quite a bit on outdoor photos because I can hardly stand to stay outside long enough to get any genuinely good shots. All and all, the Florida weather is chock full of photoshoot nightmares.

Other than that, most of my problems are camera related. My macro feature loves to focus on anything that isn't my subject, whether that be the background or the doll's clothes. It's really frustrating when you get a bunch of beautiful shots and the doll's face is blurry in every single one. Working with extremely shaky hands and no tripod proves to be irksome as well. Oh, and my camera battery... It's a nice, brand-new Canon Powershot. That runs on AAs. For no adequate reason at all. They tend to die whenever they feel like it (well, any besides those crazy lithium batteries) and I always... ALWAYS forget to pack extra. >m<

    60. when i make my doll stand and place it all good, then place myself to take picture and adjust camera etc., but the doll falls before i can take the picture <.< it appends often with my souldoll boy *sigh* so i must always be next to him ready to catch him.
but luckily, my Afi and MNF stand like rock! <3
