Your Photoshoot Nightmares

Apr 24, 2008

    1. Hiya there.

QUESTION: Has there ever been a place that was just so cool, you go to take a picture of your doll, and There is some kind of problem?
One that may have even prevented you from taking many shots in a short amount of time?
[ran out of film, high ledge, bugs of any kind, lighting, children, unexpected weather, animals, Dead Camera Battery, wind. lol did I get them all?]

For example: I have a Cherry Blossom tree that hasn't even decided to bloom yet. When it does, I'm planning on taking my resin roomies out for some Pictures. Problem is the bees and hornets. x.x; I'm terrified of them. I'm Pretty Sure the photoshoot would go something like this:
      *Click, then fix pose*
AHH BEES! *runs in circles and flails arms*
*coast is clear, goes back to whatever is doing*
OHH GAWD! :...( [repeat as many times as bee decides to come within a 10foot range near me. ]

    2. While thankfully, I haven't actually had any thing bad happen during a photoshoot but whenever I take my dolls outside I am convinced that I am going to knock them over and break their noses off! O_o I just have this really horrible fear of that so I only take a few pictures of them standing while they are outside to minimize that factor.

    3. Lol Oh man I have a Apple tree that blossoms beautifully with the same problem
      Stupid Bees! :sweat

I also have this problem with bringing my camera case without my camera...
I think something is wrong with me. :doh

    4. Unplanned too-rough visitor (all survived):

      Carolyn

    5. XD I Have both of those problems actually;

I got 2 shots from this shoot because there were bees EVERYWHERE D:

      Plus, my little man;

      :doh
He knocks over my backdrops and needs to be the model, weather they be fabric or...

      ...Cardboard.

I guess my Narae smells good?

Result of wet kitty nose on narae faces :P

      He's also done his share of pouncing/swatting my dolls so they fall :P He gets so jealous when he's not getting the attention XD;
      Ok, im done spamming my cat XD;

    6. All the time lol. I'm allergic to bees and wasps, and of course they live in all the pretty/interesting places..so I've done the 'fix pose, run in circles swatting, repeat' thing before (lol)
the hardest though? Tokyo (harajuku) on sunday afternoon...I need several people to be crowd control (and sometimes those barricades people use at movie theaters and banks to organize lines)

    7. Late last summer we had rainy weather for a couple of weeks and when we finally got a few nice clear days, a friend and I decided to take our dolls to a local park for a photoshoot. I didn't think about the fact that a large, slow-moving creek runs through the park and the place was SWARMING with mosquitoes. The next day I looked like I had chicken pox or something, I was so covered with bites. :doh

I also have a diva cat who likes to butt into photos:

    8. The wind!!
The wind has been my enemy!

I was taking photos of my girl sitting on a branch of a sakura tree when a gust of wind came and blew her off balance :o

Another time happened in my own backyard - again, the wind!
My boy ended up falling on his side...his faceup came off a little as a reult :(
Luckily it isn't too bad and can be covered up by his wig.

But surely a tough lesson learnt!

    9. @TheFontBandit
      Carolyn.S
      LexehAnn
      - Wow. Cats really are Curious  And so supportive ~ :sweat

    10. LOL!!!! omg, and I thought I had problems

      Actually for me it's just the lightning. I don't dare take my resin brats outside so I take all pics in my room, which is practically a dungeon ^^;;

But all your cats are great! ahaha XD
      Little devils too ;)

Man, Carolyn.S! Your picture made me laugh so hard, he looks like he's a ninja attackin in the shadows

Makes me somewhat happy I have only dogs though! XD

    11. let see, the worst thats ever happened to me is that my Aerial decided that she wanted to fall head first into a pond in a national park ._.llllll

that ended that shoot pretty fast.

    12. I have a nosy little dog who likes to be the center of attention and will interrupt my photoshoots at any given cost. Most times he'll go up to Ryuhei mid-shoot and sniff him, then he'll sit there in front of Ryuhei and not let me take a shot. :doh

As for taking him outside, I was once FOLLOWED by a group of annoying little bratty kids (one of them was WAY OLD and should have really known better) on the way to my favorite location. They wanted to see what I was carrying and then they hung around to see what I was doing. :| Like seriously what is that? I only took a couple of shots and left. I was paranoid they'd try something :x

    13. @tokisama xD they must've thought you were packing a machine gun. i swear some kids just should mind their own business. If they take an Interest thats one thing, but to follow you and make you all paranoid? :|

      @mei-chan Thats really horrible :o Perhaps she was hot that day? Or maybe she likes water. ^^;

    14. [IMG]

Cats. Two of them. And they need to know what's happening and be a part of it. One of them likes chewing on things, like the doll's shoelaces and hair. They've knocked my kids down several times now. It's gotten to the point where I need to lock them away whenever I bring the dolls out for photos.

    15. Well I would have to say the worst for me so far was the box opening.. T_T my camera decided it wanted to corrupt the pictures so they were ALL gone.. and it was my first doll too.. *pouts*

The second is found a really cool fence to pose against and 2 horses tried to eat her hair.

    16. I've had a few of those moments,lol.

    17. Oh, yes...
There was the rain at the Japanese garden.
And then there is the wind.... always the wind! I seriously need to find Darastrix a shorter wig!

And then that one time there was Alex (one of my furry little boys). I had my dolls all posed nicely and got one shot in before he came bounding though the backdrop. I guess it's my fault though ... I was using his flannel sheets. It's not like he was malicious about it, I think he was just wondering why his sheet were strung across the living room and he wanted them down so he could take a nap. :sweat

BTW:Carolyn's picture and LexehAnn's second shot have to be some of the best "and then there was the cat" pictures I have come across here. :)

    18. The weather suddenly going bad is probably the worst thing that has happened for me.

I once took my boy to the city for a photoshoot and because the weather was supposed to be perfectly clear with just a hint of overcast and because it just wasn't the season for bad weather, I didn't think the weather would turn bad and thus neglected to bring my carrier.

As it would turn out, Murphy bit me in the arse and it quite unexpectedly RAINED halfway through the shoot. Not just sprinkled, but RAINED cats, dogs, and hippos. Not quite elephants, but daaang was the rain coming down on us and after it had started raining for ten minutes or so, it suddenly got cooler and windier.

I ended up seeking refuge in the nearest convenience store and after carefully drying my boy off, wrapped him in several layers of plastic shopping bags and made for home.

    19. My biggest problem is the weather. One time, I had just finished Astor's new faceup with water colours (because I had no acrylic at all). I took him out side to get pictures and it began to snow. At first I thought "Great!! This will look so cool!". I forgot that water colour paint runs when it comes into contact with water (even under 6 layers of MSC *_* ). His faceup ran everywhere, he looked like he'd been crying.
He is now known as our little emo boy. I wish I had not deleted the pictures now

    20. ^ Ohhh man! @_@ But at least you can joke about it?

A friend of mine did a photoshoot session next to a fountain a park and it was just a bad day or something because the doll - the doll who stood like a champ and according to them, never took a fall - decided to fall over in the direction of the stone fountain (yes, it had water and was spitting water) and in the process of trying to catch the doll and preventing her from falling into the fountain, my friend ended up dropping the camera into the fountain instead.

      @_@

    21. Yup, my cats are a huge problem too. Mostly they like to knock my kids over and proceed to assault me with the familiar "ATTENTION ME!" kind of behavior. But there's an easy solution for this at my house... for indoor shoots, all animals go temporarily outside. For outdoor shoots, all animals possible go temporarily inside. XD With the cooperation of housemates it usually works well.

    22. Ah yesterday was a good example of this we were in my garden having a bareque and I had Lyndon with me posed against the fence, I was about to take a piture of his super coolness when my FAT labrador bulldozed past and sent him flying into the flower bed.....I spent the next ten minutes taking soil out of his wig ¬_¬

      Thankfully he was unharmd phew!

    23. my daughter (who has like a million baby dolls mind you) always decides that my dolls need to be wrapped up in a blanket and "go to sleep" right when I get them posed properly. Or she wants to hold them. Or pull off their hair. Or position them differently. Especially my DZ BB. thet's HER baby doll, I just don't know it apparently. I don't really get mad at her since she's only 3, but it does make it pretty difficult to get through a photoshoot. Especially when the sun is setting and you're running out of time.

    24. Awww... Cats, I love them but I don't like when they get to close to my darlings. I had a really windy photoshoot, and to make matters worse, my Unoa has a mohair wig! I kept that picture because I found it rather funny! The sleeping angel from hell.

    25. Well I do love to snap pictures when the weather is windy cause I dun need to get hot. But... wind is my friend but my kiddos enemy. When I take of my kids, wind blow of their balance and they fall and the place they fall was on the road. Cause I was shooting on the middle of the road. One time my twins fall at the same time and all I did was, throw my camera on the floor and catch them. My camera had all the road scratches. =.=

Bugs are my enemy... I had bugs and when everytime I bring them out door shooting, those ants love crawling on their body XO. Or FLIES... yes flies bugging me around. >O

So nothing much can bug me when I was doing my shooting except those I mention above.. LOL

    26. I haven't had too many mishaps yet. The biggest things are my curious cats and once my boy fell face first onto the corner of his box. D: I was so scared something happened to him, but he was alright. n.n;;

I'm sure I'll have more. I like to take way too many pictures.

    27. I was making a photo to my puki sugar with my hamster. He is really quickly. And when i shot suddenly the hamster was (snif, maybe?) the hair from my puki.
      ouch!
      see you soon

    28. well, i have one.

It is known that supia heads sometimes come off..
But i just had the perfect setting and just finished putting her wig like i wanted...

And her head simply jumped off O____O

    29. I tried taking Peter out a couple days ago (before it started raining again) for pictures, since inside pictures are out of the question for his character.

We have this. . .plant. . .thing. . .that kind of looks like wild rhubarb, and it would be neat to get him posing on it, but it's COVERED in ants. DX And spiders (and I have a phobia).

It seemed like no matter where I went, there were either spiders, spam worms, or mosquitos.

And then when I finally got him to pose behind a tree, my camera focused on the tree and not him. ><

EDIT - Almost forgot - for lulz, I wanted to pose him hanging on to Peter Pan movies, and just as I got him standing, and stood to reach for the movies, he fell over, hitting the back of his head on the movie shelves so hard that his eyes were dislodged. ._.

    30. I remember awhile back my then roommate and I took our dolls to the park to take pics by the river. We had to abandon that spot after a hord of small children showed up and began running around and throwing rocks in the river...and around...it was just not safe.

A few weekends ago me and the same friend took some nice pics in the woods behind her house. We had to cut it short though, after the biting insects found us and told all their little biting friends.

Sometimes I have to try and shoo dogzilla away or there'll be a giant furry beast (ok, she's not that big, but compared to the dolls...) in the background. I have a pic like that, though it's really kind of funny. Two dolls having an argument with furball wandering around in the background.

A breezy day + wigs equals bad doll hair--that can be frustrating, especially since Lorry seems predisposed to flyaways anyway.

Oh, I almost forgot...Frank...he's a problem all by himself on a still day with no children or animals or anything. I have no trouble getting him to stand. I can pretty much plunk him right down. But as soon as I'm immersed in fiddling with the camera he usually decides to topple over. Once he did it face down on to a rock! Luckily, the hat he was wearing slid down over his face and protected it. I swear he thinks it's funny to fall over and then watch me panick.

    31. @ ccsakuweb - is that a robo hammie that I see? I own one too, they're so quick but very cute >A<;;

Mine would be cats. Especially the huge fat black one that we have. I'll have a setup all nicely sorted out, DE-LINTED AND DE-CAT FURRED... and he shows up, plops himself behind a [doll sized] chair thinking he's small and will start falling asleep... When he gets shooed away, it's the repeat process of de-linting and de-furring the props (and doll clothes) again XD

    32. My camera is a small pocket digital and it eats batteries like hot cakes. Soooo many times I've gone to take pictures and the battery is killed after just one shot! Even if the make was good. That used to make me so mad so I got some really expensive ones that boasted 18 hours of continuous use and they are great!
With that camera though comes an annoying requirement of natural light! I can't take pictures at all without sunlight unless the room is near white lol.
And also just general things like dolls not holding pose and their resin reflecting on my pale dolls making them seem like a big light ball. :/

No sun light at home and outside.

    33. how about legality? :sweat

i remember going to salem, massachusetts a couple years back (im going again in a few weeks and i plan to take my tiny with me :)) and i remember thinking that the cemeteries at NIGHT would be a REALLY neat place to take pictures. i mean, the headstones are positively archaic with beautiful carvings of skeletons and whatnot...

...then i was informed that it's illegal to go into the cemeteries from sundown on. :doh

i guess vandals ruined it for us D: damn them.

    34. Lol never thought of that xD.
I live pretty close to Salem, and I never knew we weren't allowed in cemeteries after sundown. x.x; [I'm a scaredy cat, so that wouldn't make much difference to me] We took a picture of the cemetery at night, and it was littered with orbs. Crazy x.x; [It was on a ghost tour, take one when you go theyre so much fun :3]

    35. i went on one of the ghost tours last time, it was pretty fun~ lots of neat pictures with orbs and ACTUAL faces

now i want to find out where else it's illegal to go to cemeteries after sundown. where i grew up (a small, farming community) kids used to play in cemeteries at night and whatnot.... no one cared, so i dont know if it was legal or not.

    36. ugh. I found a pretty parkish area and my girlfriend and I decided to have a meet there. We shot separate shots at the creek and little waterfalls. Stupid bugs got in the shot EVERYWHERE!!!! >__< on ALL of my shots!!

      UGHH!! Girlfriend's foot!!

    37. One shoot I've done really sprang to mind when I saw this thread. I spent countless hours getting the setup and Damaran himself ready for this shoot, but I was a fool to think that the long and bright summer evenings would play fair for my sake. Over a hundred photos were taken, but my camera's display told many, many lies about their focus, so all those those photos were deleted until there were just three usable ones. The last picture was from me using a desk lamp as a very last resort for clear photos. I was pretty furious at the fact that all my work amounted to very little - but on the bright side, I suppose three clear photos are better than none at all. ;)

    38. Heh, I've a story about this. There is this complex near us - mall, offices and regular houses all in a huge and beautiful park. I found this adorable spot for Ezra near some steps leading up to a house.

Cute, isn't it? Well after a few shots this guard comes up to me and politely asks me to leave because there have been robberies around and a person taking photographs might be thought to be the culprit documenting their opportunities.

Oh, yeah, a plump, near-shighted girl who is hefting like three bags (one a huge DS carrier) and taking pics of a DOLL. I must have looked reeeal suspicious... :sweat

Other than this I've only had problems with my camera:

One time I went out for a shoot just to realise that I'm without a memory card. Last week, I recharged all my batteries, popped two in the camera, checked if it's working than shut it off immediately. Well just as I'm starting the shoot Ms Camera starts to cry about low batteries...

      What the hell???

I ended up running down to the corner store and buying a pack of regular batteries... :|

    39. The main problems I've had are indoor lighting (at meets and things) messing with my camera...and people walking in front of me while trying to get a photo. :|

Nothing really that serious...oh and running out of time. Most of my photoshoots have been at places I've been to with family or friends. It seems like whenever I get the perfect setup...it's time to leave or I can only get a few quick shots in (that never turn out well). It makes me sad.:(

    40. Wow this is perfect.

Okay, Yunabug and I were out at a playground the other day, and we were posing her Puki Puki darling sweet baby on a metal slide. We had her hanging upside-down on the bottom portion of the slide (about chest height on us) using her little magnetic feet, when something suddenly dropped. We looked at the doll, and her left hand was missing! OH NO!

Can YOU find the Puki hand?

    41. I found it!! O.O

    42. YAY! Good job! :)

      *Sniffles*

We thought we were going to never find it!
Actually, Yunabug found it pretty quick, after we freaked out and all.

    43. wow.. that was like playing where's waldo.. o_o; Found it though..

    44. Im glad you guys found it...!! Poor lil thing.

    45. Ha ha that was crazy! XD I did find it though at first I thought "nah, that can't be it!" lol!

    46. It was crazy... I mean, of all colours for the gravel to be, it HAD to be Puki-hand-coloured.

    47. Lol! Puki Colored rocks D:!
I found it pretty quick[yea more like 2 minutes..xD] though, must be all those I spy books I used to read.!

    48. That's crazy! I scanned over it a couple of times but I found it! That must have been a big scare for you!

    49. HAHAHAHA! XD oh wow, that's insane! that made me laugh sooo hard, all those puki puki colored rocks! I even called my mom over to have her play "Where's Puki." XDDD that's just NUTS!

    50. *sigh* My dog and I waited for the sun to come out again for more pictures. She got too excited >___<
      [IMG]
Yes Dremlin is chopping down a cherry tree xDDDD

    51. Right after I took this picture, she fell over and her wig fell into the fishpond that is next to the flowers. Needless to say, I had to wash it after that. But at least Narae didn't fall in!

    52. My Elisabeth falling into a fountain that I was taking pics of all my dolls on.

Or taking a bunch of pics and noticing there are billions of ants around me and climbing on everything. >_< I hate ants.

    53. well this didn't really prevent us buuut...
me and winry_automail were by this really pretty lake with them and the sun was setting and it ws amazing so we wanted to take a pic of them by the lake shore... ><
oh so this was one of those lakes that look really pretty but have a bunch of tall grass and bugs and stuff around it. So when we went down to the shore we didn't really think about that.. and when we came back it took us like 15 minutes to get back on the trail because of all the tall grass and bugs and jumping spiders...D:
it was kinda scary and a little gross
and being with our dollies made it even worse cuz we were worried about then > <

    54. Once, my mom and I drove for like 45 minutes to the smelting plant to take some steampunk/deconstruction-y photos of my girl, only to find that I had no memory card in my camera. DERP DERP. :B

And another time (same doll and same outfit- maybe it's a curse? D: ), I got up from taking pictures to find a rash all over my shins- my dad had put synthetic fertilizer all over the grass I had been kneeling in and I had an allergic reaction.

    55. lol XD that find the puki hand pic is very funny, probaly a disaster for you

I got stung once while posing my doll standing in an apple tree... wasnt weird that I got stung cous I was standing close to the hive ( my mom owned bee's ) but I was really suprised, first time I got stung by our own bee's wich arent agressiv at all!

The shot I took after I got stung and bevore I fled wasnt great either -.-'' totally not worth it.

    56. I think the only scary thing that happened when I was taking photos was in my old backyard. My mother has this lovely rose bush so I thought I would go take some pictures of my MSD near it..

I didn't know that there was a Spider nest in there. I watch in horror on my camera's screen as a huge crab spider crawls down onto her head. I was so scared. I ran around screaming for ages until the spider went away.

I didn't manage to get photos, It was so nightmarish, the spider was as big as her face and was happily crawling inside her curly wig T^T.

    57. Took Winnie to this park for photos about a week ago. She was standing on this huge stone pillar thingy and while I was taking photos this huge gust of wind came and she just toppled over!!
She got a scratch on her arm and her wig was full of grass but otherwise everything was ok.
But that sure gave me a scare. XD

    58. That story gave me the creeps!!
      O_O"
I would have been paranoid to pick her up after that even though the spider was gone! D:

    59. i found it!!! :)
      and right away at that
i've been told i have a good eye XD

    60. I found it too lol. But man that must have been a scare.

My biggest problem is my silly dog! Before the doll came, the dog was the one I always took pictures of so now whenever I have a camera out, Riley (the dog) always has to be in my face posing (he's such a model XD). It's cute but its a pain in the butt, expecially since he LOVES to slobber the doll's wig >:(

Like last night I was laying down on my driveway for an awesomely cute photoshoot and Riley decides he'd like to play fetch so I'd throw it and get back to taking pics and I'd hear him run up behind me with the ball (which is fairly big, and rubber) and he DROPS IT ON MY HEAD like a million times! And sometimes he spits it at the doll.

Grrr....he's not a very good photographer's assistant, but I still love the big 60lb lap dog <3 haha.
