For me its a sad, puppy dog like expression. Something about the big eyes and little pout gets me every time!
I like the articulation of joints. It's pretty fun to move their arms, shoulders, and knees around because it just feels cool and I like the sound it makes when resin rubs against resin LOL
Definitely the unique properties of the doll such as faceups, wigs and eyes. Through these three doll artists can creatively breathe life into any type of doll, seemingly inorganic objects.
I'm a sucker for parted lips with a little bit of teeth showing. It's just so cute! I also prefer slimmer faces over chubby cheeks.
Unusual faces and traits. I prefer realism for that reason, as I love the quirks. Smaller lips & more human proportions.
For female dolls, I love dolls with thicker legs and wider hips! I also love full lips and wider noses. Almond or cat eye shapes on either male/female dolls is another love of mine.
For my larger dolls (70cm, SD,and MSD) I love realistic mature faces with a neutral but somehow self confident expression. I dislike round faces. I like high cheekbones, and strong chins. I do not like dolls with any hint of teeth. I want realistically proportioned dolls, or at least as close as possible. I like ultra realistic hands with veins showing. I like a full but not pouty mouth. I prefer small or medium bust on female dolls and as real looking as possible. I like an hourglass figure, but not unnaturally so. I like perfectly straight, very real and preferably interestingly ethnic noses. Ultra realistic eyes, in both proportion and color. Faceups must be subtle, natural, completely realistic. I mostly collect Iplehouse. The flip side of my doll collecting personality, is that I am mad about Piposland Cheshire Cats and Fairyland Realpuki. Little cute dolls with big crazy grins with lots of teeth and fangs showing. Huge glittery fantasy eyes with weirdly shaped pupils. Pointy ears are a huge plus. Long tails with a lot of bits to bend and play with are my most favoritist thing!
I love me some nice detailed hands!! And cute noses! Which is funny because my boys hands aren’t the best and his nose is pretty pointy xD but I love him nonetheless. But that’s what I tend to go for lately! And he has new hands coming! Whoop. I also like a thinner, not so bulky body shape for my boys I’ve noticed.
a pair of beautiful eye brows I guess. I like it to be draw neatly and symmetric, badly draw eye brows well make me hesitate in purchase even I really like the sculpt.
I love really sculpted collar bones and shoulder blades. I think they’re so pleasing. Elegant and gentle looking hands are also so nice! I also love really glossy lips.
It honestly depends on whether or not i’m shelling a specific character or what my tastes are at the time but in general my holy grails all seem to have: face: delicate noses and sad, almost drooping eyes, open mouth with a little teeth or fangs, thick lips faceup: beauty marks, pastel/natural/soft color palette body: defined collarbones, slightly prominent abs (slim muscle type), long legs
Elf ears are a weakness for me. I've got four with them out of my ten dolls. But then again, elf ears are a weakness for me in general for character creation. It does make finding some dolls a little difficult because I'll find a sculpt I like but they won't have the ears I want and I have no confidence when it comes to modding.
Dainty, fine features and smaller breasts on girls...bish on boys, more fine detail. Less plastic aesthetic, more realism I guess. I notice all my dolls have similar lip features. I suppose certain facial proportions are important to my liking.
On female dolls I really like wide hips and fleshy, soft thighs. I also prefer if they have natural muscles in their arms. All in all, more realism than simply "a doll that looks like doll". On any doll I absolutely love a big or unusual nose! Sadly those are rarely seen on female dolls, but there are some gorgeous male sculpts with quite unique and beautiful noses. Also hands...beautiful, lively and elegant hands. Those are just something I'm always drawn to. Other than that I'm a sucker for anything deer-related. Horns, hooves and other such anthropomorphic deer features. :3
I love really weird non-human sculpts with like, extra limbs and things. For example, Doll Chateau Fuya is now my grail doll. Also, I really love the more anime styled dolls, because I'm kind of a weeaboo! I need to look into getting an anime eye option for my Resinsoul girl, tbh.
Sheep/Rat themes absolutely kill me! Other than that, I really like cute young dolls or mature pouty dolls! Add in a slightly sad sleepy face and delicate eyelashes and I'm done for.
Pretty faces, bonus points if they're smiling. I have a boy with a perfect smirk on layaway and couldn't be happier with the sculpt.
I love the eyes and it might the first thing I will notice when looking to a doll. The eyes should reflect the light and also my shadow greatly, as I believe it lead me to think that this doll is real and has its own soul. Because of this, I only use high-quality glass eye for all of my children. (Always say NO with resin eyes, though I saw a lot of beautiful, impressive and creative resin eyes at Dolpa and Dollshow.) I prefer navy and then black eyes, but I think green, aqua and dark blue eyes are also great choices. Still trying to experiment with odd-eyes. I prefer the dolls to have white skin (the snow white of Volks, not the sickly pale white or too-much-white like flour which I saw from some other companies) than other skin colors, but it's OK with normal/fair skin or sunligh/tan skin if it's limited model with a great sculpt which I can't buy in white skin or any other colors. I love blonde or long platinum elf-prince-style wigs. A traditional in black with tied bang is also a wig style which I'm always willing to buy. Then, I can't deny that traditional clothes and gakuran will always catch my eyes. Still finding more and more...
Thin eyes/eyeholes with condescending looking gazes right now. That and strong emotions. Aside from that seeing a sculpt that just matches a character I have in mind perfectly.
Faces that are neither too realistic nor too anime. Stylized, but not cartoonish. Beautiful eyes. A neutral expression, but a pleasant one. Poseability is key, and I don't really like ginormous b00bage. Oh, and a doll should be pretty. It doesn't have to be rail thin--in fact I love dolls with curves!--but it should be nice to look at.
My doll with the most personality development so far is my first doll. That's just because I have had her longer. She is a tsundere half demon. I have invested alot of thought all the way to blood type for her.
I have a thing for dolls with partially closed eyes. I find they’re so expressive! And I also love exaggerated, somewhat cartoon-y features on tinies (like some Fairyland or Sio2 dolls.) And I’ve always had a thing for dolls with bunny ears...I have several of them.
Strong facial features! If I can recognize a sculpt after only seeing it once or twice, that's a pretty good indicator I'll like it. Oh, and body types that aren't too dainty or graceful. Give me painfully sharp hipbones or wrists jutting out; broad-shouldered women; chubby bodies or, on the other end of the spectrum, truly skinny ones. Something with more personality than prettiness, I guess.
Sorrowful or wistful faces. There's a gentleness to those kinds of expressions that I deeply, deeply adore. Often that'll also include lowered eyelids (or wide-open "pleading" eyes), soft downturned lips, and faraway gazes. Semi-realistic faces with more unusual, less rounded features also seem to catch my attention a lot. "Catlike" and longer eye shapes are sooo lovely! ;O;
I think the most important thing is their nose... Kinda weird but nose is a important feature for me.
No secret here: elf ears hahaha and wings! But basically anything fantasy, and for the face style, I like a mix of realism and stylization, but I can't quite explain it. For boys though it's different because I prefer boys I can't confuse with girls and that's a bit rare for me.
Teeth! My first doll was Dollzone Carter. I just fell in love with him because of his sharp little teeth. Not all my dolls have teeth, but I can't resist getting a few of them that do. Cute little sharp fangs are a bonus, whether it's vampire or kitsune. I also love those little buck teeth, like my Doll Leaves Daniel has. <<< Cheering Doll Teeth!
Those really great doll sculpts that look like they have different nuances in their expression from different angles. I like expressive faces that have this subtlety going on the most.
Gradient lips, half-open mouths, freckles, strong eyebrows, clear shining eyes that catch the light, dark eyes that are like deep pools of water, short-haired girls, floppy bangs... I have many, haha!
Noses and cheeks, especially if their cheeks are unique in some way, such as high cheekbones or being somewhat gaunt in appearance. But unique features are also important to me. DIM's Gayane has hooded eyelids and while they can be a pain to work with in a faceup, they are one of the most unique features I've seen on a doll.
I do love an M-shaped mouth. So delightfully grumpy! (I have just one doll with an M-shaped mouth but he can hold that RBF role all by himself. )
Anything fantasy, cartoonish features and unusual sculpts and proportions are my jam. Anything that can inspire me into making a story for the character, to be honest!
Droopy eyes and a defined cupids bow in more feminine sculpts, I also like aquiline or straight noses in male dolls! And overall I like frowning or pouting dolls!
Interesting faces [the sort that almost don't need a faceup theyre that detailed]. Wider mouths, larger noses, sloping eyes, eye bags, gentle expressions. For male sculpts I prefer them to have a defined waist rather than the waist just going straight into the legs. Generally for dolls I like them to be elegant, oddly skinny or a bit more solidly built. I'm not opposed to some very broad shoulders.
I love wistful, big eyes and velvetey lips! I also really love slender, downcast eyes like you see in volks romantic glance a lot.
With very rare exceptions my taste in dolls runs to more adult looking dolls. I have a few minifees I was given that are leaning cute but overall my BJDs look more like older fashion model dolls rather than like cute kid/teen dolls. I like handsome mature faces, unusual faces. I am partial sometimes to flipping a gender and using a slightly femme boy head for a girl head because it often gives me a girl who's not quite so much cute as beautiful or striking. Most of the dolls I've owned that I've really liked have been real stand out sculpts, not your usual old school BJD faces...
I'm a sucker for dolls that have elf ears regardless of size. My favorite trait on a doll aside from that would probably be large eyes with nice waterlines
smaller eyes with a bigger gap between them seem to be my niche!! i loooove vampires so subtle vampire teeth and round mouths with plush lips are my favorite
I really appreciate long, high-heeled legs - almost all of my girls have them! I'm also very picky about hands, and I love lots of option hands. Volks and SQLabs/Sadol have the prettiest hands for girls, IMO.
My favorite characteristics are usually strong noses, heavy lidded eyes that give off a 'cold' vibe, and small mouths. I like stoic-looking dolls in general.
I adore lidded/half closed eyes, pursed lips, monster-ish elements (ie: spiked teeth, really long elf ears, horns) and HANDS! Man I adore hands and how much expression they add to a doll. I also tend to lean towards sculpts that can look a bit mischievous
I am only drawn to anime sculpts, but when it comes to them I like droopy or sort of sharp and narrow eyes. Faceups that have very bold and creative eyeliner/lashes, generous blushing around the eyes and cheeks. On the topic of blushing, body blushing in general. It adds so much life to a doll imo. I love hands, pretty and dainty and expressive, I need a lot of option hands, blushing and some clear gloss on the nails are a must. Mature boy bodies that don't have very defined muscles, but are also not too thin. A bit of healthy curves (the Vings 68cm body is one of my most favourites ever). I also like pear shaped bodies, big hips/butts and thighs are cute, or in the case of mature sclupts pretty attractive.
Knees, lips and well-designed bodies. Of course, heads are very important, but I like good knees, especially on female bodies.
