Your favorite doll characteristics?

Jul 7, 2017

    1. (Didn't see a thread like this, but feel free to delete this if I just missed one. :>)

We all have our favorite things we like about dolls. Certain characteristics put a glimmer in our eyes and always catch our attention, what are your favorites? :3 For example blue eyes, wings, white eyelashes, long necks, short wigs and so on.

Mine are horns, elegant hands, big animal ears, horror elements, realistic and detailed eyes, eyes with small sparkly diamond-looking things in them, nicely sculpted shoulder blades and knees, YOSD dolls with plump cheeks, smiling dolls and other expressive dolls. :3 I also love dolls that have an almost completely white style to them, as in they have white skin, a white wig, white eyelashes, white clothes and colorful eyes and pink body blushing. Love it.
I especially have a thing for Japanese looking dolls with small horns, such as Ringdoll's Xi and Or-doll's Hayami. (anyone know if Or-doll is still around? I can't access their website anymore)

      Do share your own favorites!

    2. I definitely love larger eyes, and full lips, but my most important aspect is teeth! I simply cannot resist if they have those :sneaky

    3. Full lips, lips slightly parted to show teeth, sad looking boy sculpts, foxes, cats, and deer are all definitely my weak points.

    4. T E E T H. Like...a full mouth of visible teeth. Bonus points if they're kind of weird, like Dollzone Carter and MiracleDoll Vic. Vampires with actual full sets of teeth instead of just two little fangs stuck on their lips is a bonus too. (Lookin' at you Impldoll John. I don't normally care about vamps but I love his teeth.) I just ordered a Dollits Miso too; I just love lots of teeth! And expression, loooots of expression. SheCow's Mara? Love love love~! (I...could probably keep going, but I'll chill for now. :kitty1)

    5. I love sweet faces, those cupid bow lips, chubby cheeks like on a toddler, and under eyes that are a tiny bit puffy (like Mia's Babylamb) Visible top teeth like a bunny is my absolute heartbreaker. I love young-looking dolls and don't see why people like super mature dolls, but to each their own!

      • x 1
    6. Elf ears and tan or colored resin are my two biggest. I also like fantasy dolls in general. At least half my dolls have at least one of those characteristics. I generally prefer dolls in the more realistic or stylized realistic range.

    7. Cute ears (like elf ears), having both awake and sleeping heads, and versatile expressions! Especially if they have one expression from one angle, but a different framing gives them a different one. I find that my current grail, IslandDoll Veranoen, looks proud and haughty but also very sad, depending on the angle. My in-transit DollLove EnEn is a smirky little jerk but he can look amused or menacing (... for a YoSD). And it's more aesthetic and changeable, but horns and antlers, gorgeous tattoo work, and historical outfits...! I'm specifically planning a doll to have historical clothing, antlers, tattoos, elf ears and two faces! It'll be great. :D

Also, this isn't something that would convince me to buy a doll - more something I fell in love with when I noticed it - but SpiritDoll's YoSDs have lil back dimples... :love

    8. SDs and off the wall or fantasy tinies are what I look at. I really like androgyny and my dolls being different colors and from different companies. I also like softer, slightly realistic faces and big noses. I am fond of faceups that are sickly or have bags under the eyes for whatever reason. And freckles, especially freckles all over the body. Realistic faceups with amazing texture always make me wishing for those skills, or at least those faceups.

    9. Give me a strong masculine face on a doll and I'll be head over heels! Dollshe, Granado, and Impldoll all have dolls that could keep a girl up at night, I swear. Strong cheekbones and noses are two things that really stand out to me! I love both fierce intense looking boys and gentle soulful looking boys, but they have to have dynamic features!

      • x 3
    10. Elegant hands, first and foremost, followed by posing (if you'd call that a characteristic).

    11. There are many things that I admire when it comes to BJDs but these are what stand out to me the most~

      .Owl eyes.
      .Tiny eyes.
      .Full lips
      .Pointy noses.
      .Button noses.
      .White skin.
      .Tan skin.
      .Cute teeth.
      .Dark and whimsical styling.
      .Pastel cutesy styling.
      .Out of the box faceups.

    12. I love big innocent looking eyes, sweet expressions. I love anthros, mostly fox, but saw a giraffe once I wish I had gotten.

    13. Fully opened eyes, cute smirks, sculpted noses, slender bodies, eyes that have a glint of mystery in them, and large fantasy sculptor (especially centaurs). I also love male sculptor with glasses :D

    14. I wasn't expecting to grow so fond of elf ears, but three of my current dolls have them, as will at least one of my future dolls.

    15. Elf ears, more mature and realistic sculpts, a sneaky smirk, soft smile or furrow to the brow...I guess those are some of the things I'm drawn towards. I also prefer narrower, more realistic eyes over those anime-wide eyes, and I love a good, angular face instead of those chubby cherub ones. Decent lips, as long as they don't look too puckery or duck-like, and did I mention elf ears?:XD:

Also...SDs. I like the solidity of the size, and the maturity in that range. The faces are also larger, which makes it a bit easier to lay down faceup details. I'm also a sucker for decent working jointed hands. Especially if they can hold nice poses for long periods.

Option ears, and option male parts are always a plus. The list could go on and on :3nodding:

    16. Sharp eyes and sexy looking lips ;)
I also prefer if the full set (clothes and face up) are good. If there is one of them that I don't like, sometimes I kinda hesitate to buy it XD
One example is Kylin Ringdoll . I love the sculpt, face up, and the full set . sadly I missed the sales so I didn't get him for now :( hopefully I can buy it secondhand tho XD

    17. A few of my favorite things...
      • Wings and dolls that resemble birds (such as Soom Dorothy and Doll Chateau Carol)
      • Large eyes (such as Volks's anime-styled Dollfie Dreams)
      • Colorful and/or translucent resin on fantasy dolls (Doll Chateau's green resin is so pleasing! :))
      • Older-looking sculpts (such as Unidoll Ark and Les Enfants Terribles Ryan)
      • Robots and machine parts (such as Souldoll's Soulloids)
      • Skulls (such as Popodoll Ramiel and Angel of Dream's skull head)

      • x 2
    18. My list of things I LOVE:

-Collarbones, especially when they're very detailed and deep
      -Full, thick lips
-Big noses, especially if they're rounded, have a bump or otherwise stray from the ski-slope/pointy nose
-Natural, realistic faceups, especially if they have some "flaws", like imperfectly groomed eyebrows, a tiny barely visible scar, a little birthmark
-Detailed hands, where I can see bones or maybe veins
      -Realistic eyes
-Breasts that look natural. Doesn't matter if they're big or small, I just like the ones that look like they have some weight to them and curve like human breasts, rather than a ball with a bump on it.
      -Hip bones!
-Proportional wigs where the fibers look like real hair and any parts are in scale (like curls, spikes, waves)

I guess really to sum it all up, you could say I like natural, realistic looking dolls. They don't have to pass for a real human in photos, but I prefer natural faceups and wigs over anime or the "flawless doll" look. The doll itself doesn't need to look abnormally thin either, but I like seeing all the bones that are visible on real people (I'm not thin, but I can see the curve of the bones in my wrists, ankles, hands, feet, collarbones, etc). Not all of my dolls have all of these things, but I'm always drawn to dolls who do.

    19. Hmm, the biggest standout on things I like on dolls would have to be the lips! I love full lips and quirky tilts to them, as it seems. I have absolutely despised having thin lipped dolls in the past, there's less canvas to paint! As for what I mean by quirky tilts, Resinsoul Chun and bobobie apollo are probably who I'd cite for that. Just that teensy bit of upcurve makes me swoon! It's so goofy and charming :love

Otherwise, I'd say it's fantasy skin tones and well incorporated non human features. As in not just having a pair of fantasy legs or ears on a doll, but everything has been worked together. I picked up my Cyna*mon because she wasn't a human doll with cat ears or full on anthro, but a fascinating in between. She has paw pads, just, gah!

    20. Fantasy dolls, unusual sculpts, coloured resin and probably my biggest weakness, grey or black resin. I've also apparently got a thing about making my dolls monochrome although I don't consciously start out doing that.

I have quite a few fantasy dolls and several unusual sculpts. I also have... 6? 7? grey dolls and 2 black dolls (1 dyed, 1 black resin) as well as green, red, blue, turquoise, dark tan (chocolate would be a good word) and gold resin.

    21. I like dolls that don't look too kiddy, but not too old too. And also detailed ears, veins at the arms and hands, collar bones. Nowadays I love to look at the small iris eyes I just got for my boy, they are so small yet so sparkly :love

    22. Anything fantasy. Elf ears, horns, hooves, wings... I also love big eyes. Like, CP's Dark Elf Soo is one of my favorite sculpts because she has the most gorgeous eyes. Dollmore's Trinity Lumie is another with big, gorgeous eyes. Also love teeth. Open-mouthed and smiling sculpts with teeth get me every time. Trinity Elysia has a gorgeous open mouth with a plate that shows teeth and tongue. Very delicate and pretty.

    23. Large or otherwise unusual noses... i'm weird, I really like noses hahah. Dolls with aquiline noses, crooked noses, big noses... yessss. I just find those little cute button noses most dolls have to be really really disappointing. Noses are such a huge part of the face and I dunno, they add uniqueness.
Also fantasy ears. Pointy, finned, folded over, don't care, just fantasy.
Fantasy feets, paws, claws, talons... yessss
      and fantasy colours.
Why get a regular toned doll when you can have one that's GREEN or freaking purple man?
      Yesssss

I really like unusual characterful faces and wierdly, I kinda like asymmetry because it makes the doll look well.. more human. People aren't symmetrical, and asymmetry aids this organic, hand made look in my eyes. It's a pain to paint when you realise one eye is wonky and smaller than the other lol, but it's also quite true to life (I have one squinty eye hahaha) and handling something that's imperfect like that makes them feel just that little bit more "alive" to me.

      • x 1
    24. Big, sparkly eyes! I also love a kind-looking face!

      • x 2
    25. I LOVE smiling dolls and eyes full of wonders. I like to give "surprised" eyebrows to my dolls so they look like they are constantly excited dicovering life.

    26. Pixie or faerie reminiscent sculpts (I love highly stylized sculpts, but if they look too human it can get unsettling for me); big eyes; green, dark brown, or black eyes; long lashes; wider hips from the front but a bigger bust from the side; tan or cocoa skin; wigs from wool or mohair; an expression that looks as though they are listening to their bones. That last one is hard to describe, but it's an expression that's vacant and deep at the same time. Totally lost to the world, but totally immersed in what they're contemplating. Elsewhere, but not daydreaming.

Clothes-wise, I like a more unique, artistic spin or a strong surreal feeling. Something that will capture a story rather than set the doll up to perform in a story. High fantasy, historical replicas, and modern fashion just don't interest me on dolls.

      • x 1
    27. Proper head to shoulder ratio and big noses! Also greens, tans and some purples. Oh and realistic eyes

    28. I want big round noses and smaller eyes, bonus if it's with monolids! I can't seem to find feminine sculpts with monolids.

      • x 1
    29. Pointed ears and dreaming eyes are my favorite doll characteristics. Also dolls that give off that otherworldly/fantasy vibe, and eyes that look like they are actually looking at you.

    30. Big, soulful eyes for girls of any age.
      Strong noses on guys.
Beautifully shaped, expressive mouths on both sexes.
Bold eyebrows on guys, and on some girls, too.
A more anime esthetic, instead of a super realistic one.
Lean, long angular bodies for men. Not skinny! Lanky.
A changeable facial expression from different angles. Every single one of my beloved dolls has this, somehow!

    31. Definitely teeth. Teeth and features that aren't typically pretty. I like something closer to odd than beautiful. Also, expressive faces!

    32. I am a sucker for...

      -ALL THE CATS
-bigger noses-- roman or aquiline ones, especially. (not so easy to find when your collection is firmly towards the 'mini' side of things, but...)
      -natural red wigs!
-Fantasy parts/animal accessories, either things like ears that magnet on or ones on headbands, tails, wings, horns/antlers... most of my dolls have some kind of fantasy/animal thing (or in Mar's case, she just is a fantasy creature).
-Mature minis (mature tinies, for that matter)
-Fashion. Too many styles to list, my tastes are eclectic and I just go gaga for all of it. (I'm not always successful when it comes to trying to make my own, but experimenting is a part of the fun)
      -Beautiful hands!

    33. Realistic faces 100%
I like strong chins and jawlines on male dolls, smaller (i.e. more realistically sized) eyes, faces with interesting planes and angles. I also like natural looking resin colours (such as Granado's tan and bronze, and Iplehouse's Peach Gold, Ebony and Special Real)

    34. I got pulled down the BJD worm-hole because of how realistic and beautiful these dolls were! And the fact that they had MEN - not just boys but real hunks! At last, dolls that could appreciate all the tiny things I collect LOL Plus they can be customized easily and can pose beautifully. I have a 1:3 scale dollie world but in includes 1:12 scale babies, 1:6 toddlers, 1:4 kids as well as all the different sizes of SDs - cause humans come in all shapes & sizes of course. Totally possible w/BJDs - not so much w/any other dolls :d

    35. Smiling sculpts - prefereably open-mouthed and with visible teeth

      Teddy

    36. In general I love SD size or larger, female sculpts, and white skin, the whiter the better! However for beautiful ethnic girls like IH Ashanti, Lahela, Aaliyah, Soom Epidia and Mirodoll Mika those I would love in brown or dark brown skin.

I am also a sucker for aqua, turquoise,or teal eyes. I can't wait until ersa flora starts selling her eyes regularly like she did on her site. I wish I had bought a bunch when she did have her site as all of her eyes were incredible but I thought her site would be around for awhile.

I also love long white wigs. Not platinum blond but pure white wigs is what I love. I also love big eyes and full lips. I also go nuts over very long and very full eyelashes. I adore glamourous faceups especially with some glitter or shimmer.

For bodies I love large chests small waists and curvy hips which is also called an hourglass figure. I prefer a doll have a large chest and if there is an option for a larger chest I will always choose it but for dolls whose face I adore with no large chest option I can overlook the chest as long as I love the face.

One thing I find beautiful on human beings which I don't see on bjds is high prominent cheekbones. I suppose if I had any talent I could try to mod a doll's face to give her cheekbones but I have absolutely no talent and wouldn't even dream of trying to mod one of my dolls.

    37. -teeth!
-msd girls ( I love the cute look )
-SD boys ( love tall boys xp )
      --gray or tan resin
      -horns and other fantasy parts

    38. Flowing, rounded forms like Fairyland's sculpting. No stiffness, not too many veins. A cute curve in the legs. I like cute things, I like dark things, cute+dark is my favorite combo.

I also love sparkly, shiny, unnatural colored eyes and wigs.

    39. Oooo, I love chubby dollies and big ears! But I also love unusual sculpts and anthro sculpts

    40. I naturally really love plump full lips!!

Along with smaller eyes! At least smaller to me!

With that being said I have dolls without those characteristics. It just tends to be my overall aesthetic And what I gravitate towards.

For face ups and stuff like that...
I enjoy a crazy amount of freckles and thick full brows on dolls... it's just a weakness of mine and all my MSDS so far share this ‍♂️ Can't help it!

    41. Larger, fuller style lips. Chubby cheeks. White lashes used alongside pretty, sparkly makeup. Pretty, pointy elf ears!! The list goes on!

    42. I love so many sculpts for so many reasons it's hard to make an exhaustive list but I'll try.
Sweet/gentle and mildly sad expressions, especially on child dolls
Really masculine or androgynous features on adult sculpts (dimpled/cleft chins, strong jawlines, sharp cheekbones)
Expressive hands, whether jointed or fixed
Face-ups that make the skin look luminous and warm, especially around the eyes
Natural hair wigs! Wigs that replicate natural texture!
Glossy dark resins, warm and cold and all along the darker end of the spectrum
Adult doll sculpts with hefty/bulky figures. Whether it's "fat" or "muscle" or just a defined larger size, I love dolls that look like they have substance and flesh on their bones
Creative and creepy fantasy sculpts. Looking at you, DC Elizabeth!
      Smiling sculpts, especially joyous ones

      Umm, brain empty...

    43. big eyes

    44. I love unique and bizarre fantasy dolls ! I've always been a fan of myths and legends and the idea of human animal hybrids is my favourite thing :cheer

    45. I love a smiling doll such as harucasting Adori and fairyland Reni and Soso. Pink cheeks and wide eyes with childlike features is something else I love along with elf ears.

    46. Big eyes and kinda grumpy!

      • x 1
    47. For male sculpts it is all about the jawline. Well, the eyes, too. When there is the perfect combination of a squared jaw and realistic scale eyes, I am over the moon. For some reason, with my male dolls I don't want an anime aesthetic, I want more realism. I saw one, most likely Granado, that looked exactly like Daniel Craig, and I couldn't stop staring!

My female sculpts I want some mischief in the face. I like a bit of a smile. From there it is the faceup that will draw me to a particular one. I prefer soft colors, but do love dramatic color on the lips.

    48. I loooove full lips. Bonus points if they have a kinda pouty expression. (not duckface-pouty tho)
But yeah. The lips are definitely the most important thing for me if I want to buy a female doll.

    49. Features of actual sculpts/bodies:
      -smaller eyes
-larger noses (down with tiny thin noses!)
-uniquely shaped eyes, I have a Limhwa girl with the prettiest curve to the inner corners of her eyes <3
-fuller and wider lips (I just don't love super pursed looking lips lol)
      -half-lidded eyes are super cute!
      -nice jawlines on girls <3
-cute and kinda anime-ish body proportions that are on the thicker side
-mature male bodies that are thicker and softer looking (even though I can't think of any lololol I just want something that is neither super ripped/muscular/veiny or thin and lanky)
-feet that don't look like weird little bricks or sausages! I get that they need to support the weight of the doll and keep it balanced but don't let them look terrible :-( !
-sculpted fingernails on girl's hands that are just a little bit long
      -anime style dolls!
-bodies that are very subtly pear-shaped (not the super exaggerated pear shape that's been so popular recently lol)
-Minifee bodies (not big on any of the heads really though)
-anthro dolls that are more on the animal side than the human
-different expressions for the same sculpt!

      Styling/customizing stuff I love:
      -white wigs!
      -lemon yellow wigs
      -small irises
      -pupiless eyes
-eyes with little stars in them
-super bold eyelashes, especially super bold lower lashes
      -wigs with buns
-lots of red blushing around the eyes
      -peachy pink lips
      -tiny turned down eyebrows
      -stars on faces
      -horns!
-really colorful and vintage styled clothes (50s-90s kinda vintage)
      -painted fingernails
      -thick eyebrows
-dark brown corners of lips (it adds a lot of depth to faceups imo)
      -layered necklaces/bracelets
      -cat ears/cat-based characters

    50. It was a real puki's smile that got me started (just this past February) - a smiling face still seems to be my strongest pull, and I like how the smiles are so often accompanied by elf ears.

    51. I tend to like the look of slightly wider-than-average hips on female dolls. I also really love albino dolls - white skin, white hair and face details and really pale eye colours.

    52. Just a few of my weaknesses, because this could become a very long post: A natural slouch, where the doll looks at rest even when unceremoniously flopped down. I like vein details on hands and feet, long fingers, and that poochy little jowl shape beside the lips, that slight fullness, especially on a male... for some reason that drives me crazy in the best way.

LONG POINTY NOSES. Seriously, I keep telling myself I have no place for a Dollshe Hound in my collection but I have always melted at the sight of his nose. Like, a too-flat nose can actually be a huge turnoff, such as in the case of some Granado sculpts I otherwise think are gorgeous.

(Hmm... I realize I married a guy with a pretty jowls and a strong pointy nose... at least I'm consistent.)

    53. big dolls that don't have baby faces, noses that aren't sharp enough to cut cheese and boys that aren't mistaken for women, or at least ugly women XD

    54. My tastes have changed over the years. For a while I was looking for dolls that fit various characters I had in mind. Right now I'm about sculpts with African features. I spend a lot of time admiring Iplehouse dolls.

    55. I like odd looking dolls like Doll Chateau. I love curvy bodies, especially pear-shaped ones. Legs are also a big thing for me - I kinda like the ones that are really curvy and cutesy. But, I think the thing I pay attention to most, is how the hands look. I love elegant/detailed hands and fingers. It's sort of a must for me. It's why I like Fairyland hands so much T_T But I've been looking for a body to go with a head I plan to buy and honestly the hands are the most important thing to me. I've been having a hard time finding a body that is the right size and in my price range that has hands I love.

    56. I really like dolls with big eyes and a baby face, so cute! But I also love dolls with 'smiling eyes' like the Juri 2005

    57. A few of my favorite doll characteristics are:
      • Pale skin
      • Asian features
      • Sleepy/dreamy expression or downwards gaze
      • Gray, blue, and brown eyes
      • Dark hair
      • Thin lips
      • Closed mouth
      • Youthful but doesn’t look like a kid/baby
      • Small nose
      • Gradient lip tint coloring (girls)
      • Slim body with defined features (detailed hands and collarbone, etc.)
      • Nice arm and leg shape
      • Clothes with tiny details

      • x 1
    58. Innocent eyes and fuller lips.

    59. big eyes (usually big head too) and a solid torso

    60. In faceups, I like a slight frown or a stern expression.

In sculpts, I like eyes that aren't exaggerated (or at least, not too much!) and realistic-as-possible features...but I like 'em in fantasy colors. Show me a stern-eyed doll in magenta or grey or blue, and I will swoon and open my wallet!
