You're a dolly dork when you talk about BJDs EACH TIME while getting your hair done at the hair salon (mostly talking about their wigs and styling) and your hair stylist just reacts like 'Well, can't you bring your doll over next time so I can see it?' <= The hair salon I go to is just a 2 minute walk away so I sure can grant him that wish ;D
I am a dork because always when I hear someone say a name I think about whether this would be a fitting name for my new doll
When you go out and your always looking for tiny things. OR when your FAMILY starts looking for tiny things. Mom's favorite saying is: "Toys for the toys!" Since we do buy a lot of toys and things for my little ones. We went to a huge dollar tree and found things like a doll sized fish tank, a book light that looks like an old fashion desk lamp and a bunch of little easter treat boxes that looked like Easter baskets. My mom also bought a bag of dollar things from a thrift store just to get the tiny baskets inside. We've even negotiated with someone at the flea market recently to obtain a little wicker chair. (They were only selling it with the doll until we explained we didn't want the doll. At all. We wanted the chair so they gave it to us for a buck) Did I mention we spoil my guys? XD;
You mistakenly bought 2 pairs of shoes that are too big for your 60cm boys and rather than sell them you think "Well, maybe I should re-think getting a 70cm doll after all?" when you have previously and firmly decided that any doll bigger than 60cm is just too darned big for you....
When you tell your friend half of your most visited sites are doll related and she's surprised it isn't all of them!
-When you sit on the couch reading the baby name book looking for the perfect one. - or when you sit and read through all the credits at the end of a movie looking for an unusual name.
When you compare your own interests and dislikes to that of your dolls. For example, today I was in a toy shop and the Wiggles started playing over the sound system, just when I came to a selection of Wiggles toys. Since my BJDs are children I instantly thought 'Do my girls like the Wiggles?' and since I personally don't like them my following thought was,'No! I don't like them, so my dolls dont like the Wiggles either.'
I have a list in Excel of potential BJD names. When I hear/see a good one, I make a note of it and it goes on the list.
What makes me a dolly dork? I spent 4 hours combing 3 different community yard sales yesterday for barbie and brats clothes..
I do the exact same things with my original characters. thank you for confirming that i'm not that much of a noodle. But you know you're a dolly dork when you plan to buy a doll for your girlfriend, just in hopes that she'll have as much fun with it as you do (( and you're sure she will )) (something went wrong the last couple of times i tried to post this, so if it happens that i double post i apologize)
When I'm at work and see a really awesome name on a patient's chart to then try to think of a character and make a doll out of it.
When I'm using a reed diffuser in my bedroom in order to get rid of the resin smell, yet at the same time being (hopefully??) unrealistically paranoid about the fragrance oils harming the dolls.
when i assess everything i see in stores for its potential to be repurposed as a doll prop, toy or fabric for doll clothing, rather than its intended purpose, (and btw my dolls have better wardrobes than i do, and more toys than my kids did)
when you type up all of the info for a new 'incoming' (is shipping) doll before she actually gets there. ... Now all I have to do is copy/paste the 'bio's' into the new doll and other data base's And get one decent picture to use from the box opening to go with them lol.
Today, I saw a photo of my friend's girlfriend, and I almost asked what sculpt she was Seriously though... her face was perfect for a character I wanted to shell, if only she was actually a doll. Oops. Thank deities for the backspace key.
When you literally have a note book filled with your mad rambles about your dolls, doll accessories, and the dolls that you want... and then you realize that you've filled more than one book......
When you spend weeks trawling through baby names sites looking for the perfect name to fit your character/BJD
When you see a shooting star and you wish for your dolls to ship faster instead of something maybe more beneficial like love or money >_>
I have read the last 5 pages and I do the same thing ... we're all BJD dorks another thing I do is when see a nice looking guy or girl I think "they could make a great doll"...this actually happens a lot and one of my dolls' looks (Rosiel) was based on a random guy.
When you endlessly compare different sculpts in the hope of finding the perfect one... even though you're pretty sure that no matter what doll you choose, you will love it unconditionally.
worse, when a doll you bought to get limited items (<- this too makes u an uber dork... especially when you plan it that way ) tells you her entire story within 15 minutes of hitting they buy button O_o Ya my Bonnie wrote herself into 2 stories... one cannon and also the AU version... AND she created a 'need' for another doll O_o.... (she wanted to meet her Papa, and picked him out too!) I am becoming a Queen of dorkdom a note to clarify... Iplehouse has dolls in 'series's' and they write a basic story for each doll connecting it to the next in the series. Currently this is the "Carved Heritage 2" story-line... yes it was so popular it continued in a part 2 >< I have made an AU version of this story-line to fit my other dolls not actually part of the series (or even from the IH company) yep I'm a super dork ^^
When my dolls have more expensive shoes and more than I do!! Likewise, looking at stuff in relationship to my dolls and wondering whether they will like it or not!!!!!
When you've asked for a 'large' bottle (it has a secure cap XD) from your pharmacist and trying to help he asks what's it for.... I said 'eyes', he just shrugs and replies 'oh okay' without further thought to the matter. Yep even my pharmacy ppl are being indoctrinated lol. this was tonight btw lol
When you visit shops and automatically see what would be to scale for your dolls! Food, cooking utensils, plants!
When you and your BFF are out and someone walks by and one of you says, "Doll boots/shirt/backpack/hat/etc.," and the other one nods and grins. This happens all the time with gelfling21 and I Ryu
When you spend hours in fabric stores trying to find that one fabric for the outfit you want to make.
Everything is either 'Doll Scale', 'Close to Doll Scale', or 'Not Doll Scale'. EVERYTHING. Or, you know, you're bored at work at lunch, so to prove you don't have too many dollies yet, you write down every single one of your 24(28 including floating heads) doll's three-part name, sculpt (including hybrids), and height. And can name exactly which company their wigs, outfits, and accessories all come from, or if you got them second hand. All without any references whatsoever. Because the deal is so long as you can remember all of their names and sculpts off-hand, you don't have too many dolls yet. And then your co-workers say you're cheating because if you have a good memory then you'll never have too many dolls... Which may or may not be the plan... Heehee... Or when a couple of the people in your meet group call you over to identify a doll picture by sculpt name and company because apparently you are getting known for being able to do that...? >->
I became driven to pay off my credit card completely when I realized the amount I am being charged for interest each year is enough to buy two msd sized dolls plus wigs and shoes.
I havent realised yet, that Im being a dork, but if I look at my following list, I somehow do feel that way xD.. I made an excel sheet where I wrote, what Ive spent, what I can spend and what Im going to spend. Like, when I can buy the next doll or when I can buy them clothes/shoes/wigs/eyes. Its all precalculated. This list goes on until August, but I already wrote down, what comes after that. Theres also another excel sheet, where I wrote down about their personality, age, profession, hobbys... Like I would ever forget that, but its more of a precaution, since I have exams soon xD There are also other excel sheet with their relationships and story. Ill make them a warderobe soon. Because I want to see what I have on clothes for them and Im just too lazy to search for a specific shirt everytime. EDIT: I forgot to mention the calendar, where I can see, when my dolls should arrive. With Fairyland and Luts dolls its pretty accurate.
lol sorry to break it to you ... but you are a 'major' dork LOL... no worries though... you have lots of company with us XD
Ohmy, that hurt xD But I guess, its a way of expressing, how much I love BJD's. Thank you for being so honest!
don't get me wrong... the dorkier you are the more you love the hobby... it's almost what you could call a badge of distinction! I am a firm believer that the weirder you appear about something is showing the depth of your passion for it... this applies to anything really. I mean come on... ppl in love have got to be the worlds biggest dorks of all and it's all about good feelings. If I had the know how I'd prolly do the data type stuff too... I just don't have the head for making that stuff lol (yes... me envying you lol)... I'm almost 50 and I play with dolls... in public no less (local group meet ups are in 'very' public location XD) Everyone of us is a huge dork. Be a PROUD DORK
Lol, Im totally fine! I really had to laugh after reading your post. But I agree with you, its the love that makes us creeps xD As I am so impatient about receiving my dolls, I have to do those excel things. Its a way to endure waiting time and a precise manner of controlling my outgoings. Id happily show you my excel sheets and maybe give them to you for your own use, but I dont want everyone to see, how much I spend on my dolls
When... There no longer is room to eat at the dining room table because it is covered in doll fabrics, sewing supplies and MSD sized photo props.
I am honestly a dork in general, for my hobbies (aside from owning a BJD), are considered as 'weird' by the common society. Hoho I used to save my salary and go on 'oatmeal diets' just to be able to buy my first doll, as well as to save up for his clothes, wig, etc. It even came to the point that I had to work 16 hours a day just to increase the moolah I'm receiving. >///<
I realized that in the last 3 months every clothing, accessory or shoe purchase I've made has been for a doll.
Haha I'm a dolly dork. My bookmarks are filled with dolly stores/forums. My girl has taken two shelves on my dresser as her room. I constantly look for clothing for her on the marketplace, since she is slim. I also have a notebook with bjd plans in my purse at all times ^^
when other tick i have a baby but im taking abut my doll. and when my mom asking when im i going to bring her baby over to see her :0 they are all my dolls i have no kids lol
Every time I'm at some store I look for items that can be used as props. Blind bag figures, small stuffed animals, trinkets, you name it. Whenever I do that in always think "yep, I've got the habit bad!"
I was over 70 when I got my first BJD. I have 23 now and my Flickr page has something over 700 photos either of mine or from meet ups. I have three scrap books of photos and photo stories. I made a book which is officially an inventory but includes such non inventory gems as their back story, wig size, portrait and full length photos....
I have a color coded spreadsheet for all of the characters I've shelled and plan to shell. I can order it by character name, head sculpt, body, price of either the heads or bodies, full price, eyes, wigs, extras, some even have clothes I want to get for them listed. Of course everything has a link too so I can click and stare dreamily at the company pics! The color coding is simple, green if I have it in my possession, light blue if the item is shipped, light green if the item is fully paid and in transit, yellow if it's currently on layaway, light red if it's a definite plan, regular red if It's one that could fit that character but I'm iffy yet, and dark gray for any spots I really haven't decided yet. I find it incredibly satisfying to change the colors to green when dolls arrive. I'm quite a dork.
