You Know You're a BJD Dork When...

Spent almost the entirety of what's left in my bank account for a doll.
...Whoops.

I also realized recently that I've spent enough money on dolls this year to afford a nice used car.
...Whoops.

 

I was reading dolly forums before bed and not only did I have a dream of dolls but when I woke up the names of various companies and the dolls they make were running through my head. I also walk through the mall looking at fashion styles not because I care to stay in style, but because I want to get ideas for my dolls.

 

you know it's REALLY bad when you think "she needs a new wig" or "That is a BAD resin match between that body and that head!" or "That's an MSD head on an SD body..." or "that is the crappiest faceup ever!" and then realize you are looking at real people and not dolls....yes.....I HAVE done this....>.>

 

I do this all the time, but usually when I look in the mirror XD

I know I'm a doll creep, if not a dork, when I use my dolls to threaten people. ie To my housemates: "If anyone steals my milk, my doll WILL be standing over your bed with a knife tomorrow morning." And it works, too.

 

You know when you talk about your dolls like they are real people and wonder why everyone else is confused when it makes perfect sense to you. >.>

 

You know you're a BJD dork when the highlight of the day is getting MSC in the mail.

Also when tracking sites like USPS are in your top visited sites. (I'm a tacking number stalker)

 

I got 4 packages of BJD related items in the mail today and, in the Family Guy character Herbert the Pervert voice, thought to myself "it must be mah birthday!"
....then I shook my head in absolute disgust with myself XD

 

when... your main gripe about having a non-internet loan mobile phone while your phone is being fixed is not being able to dual browse on DoA while at work and on the bus.

[work blocks most photo sites, so I read threads on my work pc, but when there is a missing pic, I go look at it on my phone]

 

Your walking through a store and see that the 25 cent machines have a small shoe keychain in them and think, "Hey that's BJD sized!!"

 

When you start thinking $600 for a blank, naked SD is a bargain! And when you can restring a doll in under 15 minutes, blindfolded. I have indeed passed that challenge.

My doll spending this year is quite scary I can afford a totally brand-new automated motorbike

And can't spend one day playing with my doll and browsing DenofAngels.

And keep renewing my doll wishlist.

And start to see everything small-sized as a good property for doll photography..

Oh well..

 

When you fly halfway around the world on vacation to attend a Dolpa. It was REALLY fun explaining to my coworkers why I was going to Japan. I may not have been completely forthcoming.

 

I buy my doll her own toys. Seriously. She has a unicorn plushie and several tiny dolls that are not mine--they're hers. I am so doll-owned.

 

When your sewing stash for your dolls more than dwarfs your stash for human sized materials.

 

I did this, sort of. When I finally decided to take the reins, stopped wishing, and decided to save the money for my first doll, I had so many BJD dreams. I had a dream about some weird BJD factory, and all the dolls were carried around by their heads on some Steam Punk-like conveyor belts. I dreamed I ordered two male dolls and their face ups were hideous... and the next night I dreamed I was on a school field trip or something, and I still had those two dolls.

I think I've had others, but I can't recall.

I started sewing, intending to do human things, and gradually go into doll things. I found it was just much easier - and cheaper - to sew only doll things. I also discovered I don't have the space at all to do human things, but doll things are so much easier to do. Plus remnants can be a life-saver, and you never know what you'll get for cheap.

 

I realized, today, that I am a BJD dork, because I referred to a character in a video game by saying, Oh, that made a really nice doll." Hmm, it totally wasn't a doll.^^;

Also , I agree with Sorenka- every time I go to the store, I find myself looking for tiny props!

Finally, I have packed up all the knickknacks on display in my living room, and replaced them with my dolls. So, they are now my decor.

 

When you say "faceup" instead of "makeup" to your friends.

And I did something else that more qualifies me for dork than BJD dork, lol. I did an Microsoft excel worksheet for all my dolly expenditures because I want to keep track of all their things I have, and how much they cost, and when my dolls arrived yadah yadah.

Oh, and when I'm the only one fascinated by jointed hands. My family kind of gave a "meh" face...lol

 

You marvel at the large doll someone is carrying, only to realize it's a toddler.

 

You go through scrap fabrics too small for human-clothes and pull out the pieces you think would go well with your doll's coloring, just because you might want to make them new clothes sometime ...

 

when you wake up to banging from next door neighbors and your first thought is "the poor dollies are trying to sleep" ..... 'sigh'

 

When you're watching a horror movie about posession, and in the middle you start thinking of a good way to use your dolls in a side-story about a posession...

 

When you look for mini sized items for your dolls when you go to a store, the mall or any shop XD

Also spending $100 for a doll outfit is not a big deal, but I get mad when I see human shirts for $20 "why so expensive!!" I say in my mind while looking for cheaper clothes for myself lol and I wanted to buy a pair of shoes but I didn't because they were $50...but my dolls have $40 shoes!! but it's NOT a big deal when it comes to BJDs

 

You get a new job and your first thought is "yay money for ABJDs"

You flaunt your doll pictures like you would if you had pictures of your kids.

You start calling dolls by their chosen names before you even own them. (I almost did this in an email to Blue Blood Dolls the other day. Nearly called Waltz by his name of Hades, and I refer to Onlydoll YiFeng as Saga, and Ringdoll Spencer as Misty)

 

...you're organizing forms and get a sudden rush of excitement when you come across "F16".

 

I did this with my first doll. Whenever I am discussing my dolls with people, I always wish I had a picture on-hand to show them.

I also have a new one (if it hasn't been mentioned already): When you look at a real person, and think 'That skin/hair/eyes combo would look good on a doll'.

 

I actually did that I saw a kid with orange-ish hair and red-ish brown eyes...the first thought I had on my mind was "he would make a good doll" and Rosiel's appearance, my Twin-B, is inspired by that kid. I'm such a dork!

I scour Beverly's every time I'm in there to see if they have an 1/3 scale props.

 

... you're walking through a mall, see a toddler with HUGE eyes, and tell your friend, "His eyes are way too big! He's wearing 12mm, he should be wearing 10s!"

you use spray sunscreen and think to yourself that it's just like sealant and protects me from the evil sun

 

When you walk past a rack of baby stuff, see the tiny shoes and wonder if they're doll-sized. (They're usually not >.>)

 

When you walk in the craft store, and you can't help but examine all of those doll clothes/accessories to see if anything might fit your doll (nothing seems to look the part, nor do they jive with the overall look).

When the cashier asks you what your plans are, and you are hesitant to say that 90% is for doll clothes...

 

Just to name a few of mine:

You spend the first 45 minutes of your internet date with your LD boyfriend talking about your dolls (this happened last night. >.>)

You're giddy about getting your new apartment... because it's a 1 bedroom... which means you can have a doll room.

You gripe about having to spend $12 on your own shoes, but don't bat an eye at the $35 you just paid for a pair of MSD boots.

You look at people and find yourself thinking of what company their sculpt is from.

You have a book of your bjd stuff... from character into to future plans... that you update regularly.

And in this book, is all the info on future dolls, organized on the sheet by where you're buying things - including doll, wig, eyes, first outfit and shoes, an necessary accessories - with totals (including shipping) per store and the full total at the top of the page... items crossed off when they're bought or layaway payments checked off as they're paid and the total at the top adjusted. You're slightly obsessed with keeping this book 100% current and up to date.

You talk about your dolls as if they're real people, and wonder why people are confused when they find out the person you've been telling them about (sometimes for weeks) is a doll.

You met your bff/life partner because of your dolls.

 

Ahaha I do that!! I once spent, well...many quarters just to get a pair of neon green, MSD-sized handcuffs in a machine for Lucca. ^^;; I also saw mini-shoe keychains in the craft store for only a dollar, but they were pink with hearts...(I have two boys XD)...and, it was very obvious they were all left feet.;;

 

..When your relatives ask, unprompted, about what you're doing with your dolls lately.

....when you have DREAMS about shopping in normal stores looking for anything dolly sized or useful for props.

 

You spend more time with your boy friend's doll than your boyfriend

 

I can identify with this!! I spent more money on dolls in the last 5 months than my car is worth!!

 

It's for this reason that I kinda wish I had dolls when I was living in a dorm. My sister and I had HORRIBLE suitemates, but that's a different story for a different day.

I know I'm a dolly-dork because I frequently talk about them with my husband (which I know he has to get sick of) and I LOVE to do research. I'm so curious about all the different companies and their looks, and DoA is a wonderful resource for this! I also love seeing box openings and often find inspiration for my own collection from them. As a perfect example, I just realized how lovely the Soom Rosette pure bodies are, and am now planning to get one for my floating head! (I was really wanting a tall, lanky character, so they fit perfectly!)

Edit: Wanted to add- when you keep planning a trip to Goodwill solely to search for dolly-items.

Oh this is so true, and when you spend 2.00 on a small bottle of water, You feel ripped off

 

when you're more concerned about getting your doll shoes than yourself a new pair because your current ones are falling apart even if your doll's shoes will cost about twice as much as your own.

when you constantly make sure your doll's hair is perfectly brushed and styled but don't really care how your own looks.

when you look at people and wonder what sculpt they are.

when you're talking with a friend about non doll-related stuff and random say "I think I have SD17 calves....".

when you open the fridge, see a bag that says 'Italian' but it registers as 'Idealian' in your brain.

when you're looking through old pics and see one of yourself with a tall friend and think "that's an MSD with an SD"

when you're looking at simple outfit and think that $135 for 2 outfits is a pretty decent deal

when you'd rather being doing stuff with your doll or looking for things to buy them instead of doing homework

when your friend who knows nothing about dolls sends you an IM that says "Happy Eid" and you think she's talking about an Iplehouse E.I.D.

when you see a commercial on T.V. for customizable furniture and wonder if they'd do a couch in 1/3 scale....

when you see "DH" in a news article and cannot think of anything else it could possibly mean if not "DollHeart"

when you start copying your doll's style (in my case it's finding shoes like her's that look good with everything)

 

I was paying some bills and was all outraged: "hey! That's two MSDs!!!" D-:<

(as if Real Life is conspiring to deprive me of dolls)

 

When I'm at work I'll see someone and think "oh that dress/top/whatever would be ideal for 'x' character".
I'm also one of these people with databases on their computer for JUST doll stuff. And I have an entire folder on top of that with all sorts of other doll related stuff, I even have screen shots of carts of orders I plan to make xD

Plus I realised I've spent more on dolls than anything else this year, and I've only bought one.

As well as that I find myself sitting planning dollie stuff in most of my spare time and while I'm at work Dx I think I have a problem.

 

Oh god I thought I was the only one...

I wish I could show you all the documents and folders I have of 'dream items'....

 

When clients and contractors ask you about your dolls/if you have new ones....

When you get surprise money you immediately shout "Dolly funds!" despite needing new shoes/clothes for yourself....

When you have a group shot of your dolls set as your wallpaper at work....

 

When you walk into a craft store and the people working there are like, "What doll did you bring with you today?"

When you have free shirts you got from staffing anime cons as most of your wardrobe but your dolls easily have a few thousand in clothes.

When you pick up a penny from the sidewalk and say "that's 'insert-name-here doll money" and you have jars and jars at home full of pennies.

When your favorite doll has more shoes to wear than you do.

When you know what doll came home in what month, but you don't know what day your friend's birthday is.

When your doll clothes and items take up more space in your bedroom than your own stuff.

When you lug from the basement a HUGE wardrobe thinking "This would be perfect for (human) clothes, but the shelves and top ends up being filled with Doll furniture.

When you give an exclusive silver and emerald custom necklace to your doll and stop wearing it yourself because you feel bad stealing "Corellon's" necklace.

 

When you have not been on vacation for years and really want to spend two weeks in the sun next year but spend all your free money on dolls which makes it impossible to go on vacation... Boyfriend is not getting mad at least^^

 

When you start looking at people thinking they look like sculpt x from company x. Seriously- there's a girl on my bus route who looks EXACTLY like an Iplehouse Benny! XD

And I do this every day, seeing as a couple of my dolls need new faceups... XD

 

You know you're a BJD dork when, while browsing Google or Amazon or anything with multiple pages to scroll through, you click on the NUMBER of the page you want instead of hitting the FORWARD button.
That's my big dork moment -- because when I hit the forward button on company websites, it skips ten pages instead of going to the next page...

When your friend interrupts you mid-sentence to say, "OMG, Dolls," and you totally understand what it is they're talking about.

When you go to the mall and see awesome outfits and say to that same friend, "I wish I had a shrink ray," and they totally understand what you mean.

When you buy cube shelving and turn it into Tiny condos...

When, despite making bank at work, you don't have much in your savings account at all.

When you get a medical test done and look at the cost and think, "That's a high-end MSD!"

All of this applies to me right now. XD

 

When your friend who don't have any dolls, don't want any dolls, and don't even follow the hobby ask how your dolls are... and know them by name. I also have friends who will bring me scraps to make dolls clothes out of when they are done with other people sized projects, which I love because I almost always dress my dolls from scraps leftover from costumes projects.
