My dolls don't get stuck in the same outfits for a long time - I'd prefer getting to mix and match several smaller items that they could then also share with each other. If you had to get stuck with one bad perk, would you rather have high dome eyes in all dolls that leave a lot of gapping or shoes that are always visibly too big?
Shoes that are always visibly too big, of course. In fact, that is a situation I already suffer with my Souldoll Vito boy. His feet are such a weird size so he only has one pair of shoes that is an actual fit in terms of size and realism. Would you rather have a doll whose face sculpt has a laughing-hard-like smile or a really mopey pout?
Mopey pout 100% I actually have a doll like that and I think they are so cute. I feel like hard smiles would be harder to photograph organically. Would you rather have unlimited access to pre-made wigs, clothes, and accessories but never be allowed to make your own things for your dolls; or unlimited access to all the tools needed to make your own things, but never be able to buy anything premade.
Auuuugh. As much as the creative in me hates it, I'd rather have pre-made, because it's one thing to have the tools at your disposal, but another to have the time and energy to use them and actually get good at the craft in question. At least the unlimited access to pre-made things would still allow them to look the way I wanted. Probably better. Would you rather have a sculpt that was almost perfect except for that one little thing that bugged you constantly whenever you looked at it (Like a wrong-shaped nose, too large eyes, etc.), or have the perfect sculpt, but never be able to find the right eyes and wig to go with it?
As someone who is very picky about plainer face sculpts, I know I have and will continue to go mad if something is slightly off. I change about eyes and wigs anyway, my guys already deal with that. Say you had the ability and everything you needed to mod a doll, and it had to be modified- would you prefer to make the forearms longer or the shins longer?
Long shins all the way, that could actually look like a cool fashion-esque stylisation. Long forearms would look like monkey arms unfortunately. Would you rather wait half a year and get to choose between a variety in resin colours or have no choice but have the doll with you within a month?
I'll take the 6 month wait. So long as I know how long the wait is going to be ahead of time I can be patient, but the wrong resin color could ruin a doll for me. (And certain popular options, such as "paper white", I just can't stand!) Would you rather have your dolls come to life, where they can talk but can't move, or can move but can't talk?
Move but can't talk. There's so many ways to learn communication that way, but I would feel incredibly creepy having to move my dolls where they want to be while they can talk. Would you rather have only one doll, your grail who you absolutely adore; or unlimited dolls you really like but don't love?
I would rather have unlimited dolls I really like than a single grail doll. I don't think my taste will stay the same forever so that grail doll might not be my favorite forever. Being able to get more dolls as my interest change sounds much more fun! Would you rather pay a lot for a face up that's exactly what you want but can't change again or be able to get as many very nice face ups as you want for free, but totally random styles?
It's a tough choice, but I think I'm going to take the "Exact face up, but I can't change it anymore." My dolls are my characters. If I get them in to the right "faces", I don't think I'd ever want to change them. Would you rather spend big bucks getting pre-made accessories that you can't change or would you rather spend that money/time to learn how to make them for yourself the way you want them to be?
I'm doing the latter so I guess that's my answer! (Aside from shoes, I don't want to have to make those ) Would you rather have mobility joints in thighs or an extra torso joint at the hips?
I've had both before, and I think I'm going to go with extra torso joint. Maybe it's because the boy who had the mobility thigh joint was a pain in the bloody behind to work with... but it's left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth. Would you rather have one super limited doll that's expensive, or take the same amount of money to get a few, more common dolls?
I would rather use the money on more common dolls for projects! With one super limited doll I would be too afraid to do anything with it, besides displaying it. Would you rather have the ability to color match any doll body and head perfectly, or be able to match any sculpt head and body, no matter the size?
Oh 100% match any head and body. My problem is always loving artist heads with 13cm necks, but slim 68cm bodies with 10cm necks... So I never win lol Would you rather be able to make any of the clothing you want for your dolls and have them turn out perfectly, or be able to excel at every faceup?
Faceup. I can buy pretty clothes. If the face isn’t right it will bother me, no matter how nice the clothes are. Would you rather have one doll with an unlimited budget to buy it, or unlimited dolls but each one can cost no more than $200
Wow, that's the hardest question ever. I think I'd rather have one doll because I can't even imagine how you would manage to buy a doll with face-up, a set of clothes, wig and eyes that only costs $200 xD Would you rather do only phone-quality but perfectly framed pictures (conveying what you want to convey, perfect posing, etc.) or camera-quality but the pic itself is just meh?
This is a very difficult question. I would probably follow the exact content of my photographic message. So just the phone. Would you rather have all the dolls in realistic human proportions (but without the realism and beauty of the body) or vice versa?
I've found I prefer dolls to look doll-like with a bit exaggerated proportions. All different kinds of body and face types, yes, but stylized - so exaggerated proportions with realism and beauty of the body? Would you rather be stuck with plain glass eyes forever or have beautifully detailed resin ones that yellow and need to be swapped every year or two?
Plain glass eyes. I think I first heard about resin eyes being a thing earlier this year, and just the idea of them weirds me out. Would you rather only have dolls with expressive faces or neutral ones?
Neutral for sure. Most of the expressive dolls I've tried to love, I just can't connect to. Would you rather all your dolls have stains from wigs or stains from clothing?
I just had to sand off a very pesky wig stain so clothes stains 100% At least I can get a body sock to go underneath. Oh no - your dolls are alive! Would you rather have to feed or school your dolls?
Definitely feed! I only have one doll, and she presumably only needs 1/4 as much food as a regular human, so that would barely be an issue. The main problem would be getting my hands on functional silverware at that scale... Would you rather have no money to spend on doll stuff, but infinite time and energy to make things yourself, or no time and energy but infinite funds?
I choose no funds but infinite energy. I'll probably end up in that situation IRL too (looking to buy a house soon, so it'll be lean times ahead). Imagine you had to move overseas for a very long and undefined time (OK let's say 15+ years), but had to leave behind most of your possessions. Would you rather put all your dolls into storage and have no access to them indefinitely? Or would you rather bring one doll along and be able to enjoy it always, but must sell all the others?
I've moved countries a lot and can't rule out having to again, so reducing my belongings is nothing new to me. I'd keep one and sell the rest! Seems like a waste to keep them in an indefinite storage if someone else could enjoy them the whole time. Would you rather buy all your dolls second hand, but they're all yellowed, or buy all dolls new but the wait times are minimum 1 year?
I'd rather buy them new, not a fan of yellowing. And I'm pretty patient about waiting as long as I'm confident I will get them eventually. Would you rather be able to buy any doll/s at any time, or would you rather spend time dreaming about which doll to get, what clothes and accessories, what name to pick, etc., and get truly excited about the purchase?
I don't buy dolls very often as it is, I like to take my time and shop around and make careful decisions, so the later. I much rather take my time, if I got too many too fast it wouldn't be as fun. If you had to chose, would you rather have a doll with unreliable wrist joints (difficult to pose naturally when interacting with props and other dolls) or unreliable ankle joints (difficult to get good standing poses and a constant risk of collapse).
Oh, that's a good one! I think I'd go with bad ankles: there's a lot one can do with sitting/reclining poses alone, plus there's ways to reinforce a doll's standing abilities (sturdy boots, doll stand, etc.) Would you rather deal with a bad wig or bad eyes? (And does the answer change if it's your whole collection vs. just one doll?)
If it's a functional problem then bad eyes - I'm fine with struggling putting them in because I'll only have to do it once. A bad wig that falls off all the time is a... commitment. Looks wise, it's a tougher choice perhaps a bad wig because that can still be styled/cut/saved? Ugly eyes that make the doll look possessed are a no-go for me. Doesn't matter if it's just one doll or the whole collection. Would you rather have dense, heavy resin with limited poseability or lighter, cheaper-feeling resin with extra poseability? For the sake of the question, they look optically very similar.
Tricky. As long as the lightness doesn't come from over using fillers and making the material brittle, I'd prefer a light doll over a heavy one. Would you rather have lots of time for you doll projects, but no good ideas, or plenty of really cool ideas for projects, but very limited time for working on them?
That's a hard one! I have plenty of time AND plenty of projects and still don't work on them. I'll say no time, good ideas, since that's the same result. Would you rather have one perfect outfit for your doll but then you can't change their clothes, or many not-quite-perfect outfits but lots of options?
Depends on the doll—a lot of my dolls have one default outfit, so I wouldn’t mind doing one. Kieran needs multiple outfits (armour and regular outfits) and Aura owns almost as many clothes as I do. I’m going to have to go with many not-quite-perfect outfits. Would you rather eyes that are the perfect colour, but the Iris is too big/to small, or eyes that are the perfect size, but the colour is wrong.
As long as the colour is in the right dark/light ballpark, I'm happy with the correct iris size/wrong colour combo. Would you rather have your shoes in doll size or your dolls' shoes in your size?
My shoes in doll size, ah, we pretty much wear the same types of shoes anyways, converse or boots. I dress my dolls a lot on how I like to dress. Would you rather get a used doll, that is broken - but you can fix it, or get a used doll that is yellowed?
Oh god, I love both of those options. If they’re yellowed, I can dye them pretty much any colour other than purple and light blue. Pretty much any jewel tone is in the ballpark. If they’re fixably broken, I can turn the crack into a scar, and that gives them some character. There’s no wrong answer here, both are great. I think I’m taking the yellowed doll—I don’t know how severe you intended this yellowing to be, but lightly yellowed WS is pretty, and butter yellow resin is going in my dye pot! would you rather a full doll that looks just like your character but is way too tall, or a hybrid doll that looks just like your character but the resin match is awful?
Probably is too tall. Technically I already have one of those; I'm shelling a character as an MSD that is canonically six inches tall, but the sculpt is just perfect! My one SD is pretty big for me, but also fits the character she is and I adore her even if she frequently frustrates me. Would you rather have a long pre-order, or long shipping time? (This one is a little evil, sorry.)
Long preorder. I have tons of patience (and a crew to occupy myself with), and I've already endured a preorder that lasted 1year 10months - nothing else is going to top that. And there are many places where things can go wrong during a long shipping time, and I'd rather not be in agony over that kind of unknown. Would you rather have dolls that can't stand, or dolls that can't sit?
Can’t sit on a technicality! If they can stand, I can display them on the Hell Shelf (so named because the characters are in hell, not because the shelf is bad)—but it’s probably possible to wire/suede them to be able to sit, which I did with a doll I’ve now sold who had Awful Joints. It’s harder to make a wobbly doll stand with wiring, but it’s quite easy to wire a doll to sit! Would you rather a doll that has no torso joint, and sits stably (but can’t pose that torso at all) or a doll with a 3 part torso who can pose, but usually flops like a noodle?
I'll take flop like a noodle. I might have to wire it or suede it or something, but I wouldn't want to give up the possibilities that come with mobility. This also makes me think of my question... Would you rather a doll that has an aesthetically pleasing body, and looks wonderful shirtless for pictures, but can't sit worth a crap. Or... A doll that can hold many positions, but it's joints look all wonky when it's shirt is off, and the body is not that pretty?
That's a hard one! I go for a good posing body whenever I can, but the aesthetics need to be good first and foremost. Makes no sense to have the nicest posing if you can't have it look good. I think I'd rather have a good looking doll with single joints and subpar posing in this case. Would you rather have a doll made in resin that is extremely beautiful and nice to the touch, but yellows and scuffs very quickly, or resin that looks and feels ordinary but is tough as nails and never yellows?
Gimme that uber tough resin—I like my dolls to last!! Especially if the character is supposed to be pale, yellowing WS looks more human than fresh, paper white NS. Oh no! A doll-obsesssed mad scientist has arrived, and he’d like to test one of his two latest inventions—woukd you rather he use the growth ray, and makes all your dolls one size bigger, or the shrink ray, and makes all of your dolls one size smaller?
One size bigger, please and thank you! (SDs for the price of MSDs hehehe) Would you rather all your dolls have impossibly tangle-prone long wigs or impossibly fiddly and hard to manipulate eyes?
Impossibly tangle-prone wigs, absolutely please. There are hairdresser and cosplay techniques to tame a wig, but there's not much you can do for eyes. Speaking of which: Would you rather find the perfect wig for your doll, or the perfect outfit for your doll?
Perfect wig, they never stay in the same clothes, but the wig is a part of them for me. Would you rather buy an instock doll that you like, but isn't your first choice, or wait for 6 months on the doll that is your first choice?
Oh god, knowing myself, I buy the 6 month wait doll, and then a month into that wait, break down and buy the in-stock, and have to deal with figuring out who gets the character, and how we'll be going forward. But choosing both is not how the game works!! So I will say I would rather have the 6 month wait, first choice doll. Would you rather spontaneously gain the ability to do perfect faceups, or spontaneously gain the ability to sew any outfit you could ever want?
I'm happy with my imperfect faceups but I'd definitely love a miraculous sewing skill upgrade - no matter how hard I try, there is still some wonk in what I make. Would your rather have all your dolls have the same bodies or the same heads?
... Same heads. I have something like 15 FL Alans, many on different bodies that emphasize their characters. Face ups and different bodies do wonders. Would you rather each doll have one perfectly-fitting pair of shoes or multiple too loose pairs?
Oh, I really like variety, so I am going to go with the too loose multiple pairs, this way they can all share shoes as well. Also, I really need to buy doll shoes, a couple of my boys are barefoot. Would you rather... Travel with an expensive favorite doll, and worry about it the entire time, or travel with a less expensive doll that would easier to replace?
Ohhh 100% I am leaving my favourite at home, and travelling with a doll I can replace. I couldn’t enjoy my trip if I was worrying that I’d lose Kieran, for instance, who would be incredibly difficult to replace, if I could replace her at all. I could still have fun taking pics of one of my cheaper, less favoured dolls, like Anastasia or Kyorlin. They deserve trips out of the house too. Ironically Anastasia is on a body I probably couldnt replace and Kyorlin has a head I couldn’t replace, but both of them are some of the least expensive dolls I own. For someone fully replaceable, we have to go to some closer-to-average priced dolls, like Zilvriia and Dispira. Both of whom I’d rather take on vacation than Kieran. would you rather all your dolls be the same resin colour, or none of your dolls being allowed to “repeat” a colour?
I'd like a non-repeat situation if I had planned my collection really well! (Alas, I did not and most of them are yellow ) Oh no! A challenger appears! Would you rather fight mr Dollshe or Mydollection?
I’d rather fight Dollshe, because my Dollection order did eventually come (after 8 months and a Lot of emails), but Dollshe has been double-selling people’s three year old orders as “in stock” whuch is imo more egregious. Also, for the sake of entertainment, envision this as a Phoenix Wright style legal battle, in which I have anime hair and possibly a weapon, and people keep yelling “objection!” Like it’s a battle cry. Several of the witnesses are made of resin. I suppose this makes me genderbent Edgeworth, if I’m the prosecution. Better get the updated autopsy report. You’re looking for a new project on the market place! Woukd you rather buy a super unevenly yellowed doll (think tanlines) or à very amateurishly modded doll?
I really want to try my hand a very uneven yellow doll with tan lines. I have these ideas that might work on cleaning up the resin, and I want to experiment with that. I do a baking soda scrub on my own dolls if they start to yellow or begin to look uneven. And it's worked wonders to keep them fresh. Imagine getting ahold of a overly unevenly yellow doll and seeing what you could do with it? You would really be able to tell if what you are doing is working because of the uneven color. I like repairing dolls. lol Would you rather have more extra eyes, or more extra wigs laying around your house?
I’m torn on this one! I have the supplies to make either wigs or eyes when I need spares, though I buy eyes pretty regularly. And also wigs, if I’m being real. I really should get back on making them. But I think I’ll go with more extra wigs, because I have characters who have different hairstyles and hair colours. Zilvriia needs about a quintillion different wigs. Cole’s hair changes colour with her mood, and so she needs 4+ wigs for her different mood states. Vidania probably needs a new side shave wig. I would love for Sinclair to have her “palatable Sinclair” finger-waved wig (and a dress that matched). Alternative hairstyles are just gonna get more use than alternative eyes. Would you look at that, you’ve won a new doll: do you take the most beautiful doll you’ve ever seen, but in a scale you don’t collect, or an average doll in a scale you do collect?
I would actually want the average doll on the scale that I do collect. I could find so much more uses for this doll! Let the second place person have the pretty showcase doll! Would you rather, frequently change backgrounds and settings in a series of photo shoots with your dolls, or frequently change the clothing of the dolls in a series of photoshoots with your dolls?
I'm not big on backgrounds, I'd rather change outfits. Would you rather redo all faceups in your collection or start from 0 with styling them again (sewing/buying clothes, wigs, shoes etc)?
Redo all the faceups - it's less expensive (only have to pay for sealant), half my dolls were painted by me, and I can keep practising my skills. (Although I'll be sad to lose the professional faceups, and will always be a bit worried that I can't capture their personalities again...) OTOH, I put a lot of money and mental energy into styling my dolls' clothes and wigs, and would rather not spend all that a second time. Would you rather have a doll with solid one-piece torso, or a doll with single-jointed elbows and knees?
One piece torso—I’m going to do tattoos all over that body with less worry about breaking up lines/joints chipping. woukd you rather a doll that looks impeccable dressed, but a little alien naked, or a doll that looks a little lumpy dressed, but impeccable naked
Girls! I have more girls than boys, and there are just so many more clothing options options for girls. Would you rather all your dolls have long wigs or short wigs?
Short! Maintaining several long wigs is a nightmare, I already struggle with one Would you rather have a doll with exaggerated hips or shoulders?
Okay, I’m torn, cause on one hand I love me a big muscle lady with exaggerated shoulders, but on the other hand, I have characters like Dispira and Fierna who need really exaggerated hourglass proportions. I think I have to go shoulders on this one though, because of the DevotionDoll muscle girl body. Would you rather all your dolls be the same height, or the same resin colour?
