    2. Here is Rainey, watching the Blue Angels from our rooftop in downtown San Francisco, during this year's Fleet Week celebrations....

      Whoooo! There they go!

The Huntington Hotel looks like it's directly above us-- and it kinda is right on top of us, even though it's two blocks away, because the hill is so wildly steep. The Blue Angels were doing killer stunts right there past the crest of Nob Hill. In their wake, crazy contrails look like so:

My little dinky camera wasn't capable of capturing an actual Blue Angel in flight, of course; too fast! But we got to stay home & not deal with crowds & see bits of the airshow from the comfort of our roof, for free. Can't beat that. ^^ Rainey here, he's 14, he still thinks anything blasty is cool.

      ...Excelleeeeent!

    3. I live in a pretty ugly neighborhood (in the Eastern panhandle of West Virginia) and my own yard suffers no small amount of neglect, due to my spending so much time in dolly pursuits. But I live in a "holler", across the road from one rise and halfway up another. The sun sets over the hill out front and the sky at that time of day is often quite pretty. It's my favorite time to shoot dolls outdoors, except the light can be really tricky, so that I end up with mostly profiles against the sunset.

After sunset, I am sometimes able to capture the moon coming out over the eastern part of my yard.

Eli apparently wanted a little privacy for his phone call...

I don't mean to put down West Virginia; it's a beautiful state that lives up to its motto, Wild and Wonderful. I just happen to live in a not-so-wonderful part of it.

    9. lol. Just wait till it starts snowing for real. I got one outside too. Don't be decieved though, it may look sunny and nice but it was really 22 F outside (google told me) so I only got a couple on my way to the car (went x-mas tree shopping ^^). The bad thing about piercings during winter is they hurt if i'm out side too long.

    11. I'm lucky in that I work in the more scenic end of the industrial/office parks that sprawl over a good 2-3 mile-long stretch of what used to be woods and farms. Thanks to "buffer zone" requirements around newer buildings, there are many little bands of natural woods left:

As well as some patches of farmland (most has been sold off for commercial or attached-townhouse use):

AND the long, narrow field right next to my building's parking lot. There's been a sign up for a set of stores to be built there, but the signs been up for over 2 years now, and the field is still used to grow corn and then pumpkins. It's surrounded by high weeds later in the year:

But it's accessible and dandelion-city in the spring.

And often working as part of the very limited Saturday shift means I get the run of the areas when they're pretty much deserted, and no lunchtime power-walkers to gawk. (For this PS - http://www.denofangels.com/forums/s...Climbing-Trees-Because...-(BF-x2)-58px-5-2-10 -- I used 5 different areas on "my" property as well as the vacant property next door.)

EDIT: P.S. - LOVE the light color in the snow-on-the-window picture!

    18. The Cornwall pictures are lovely! Reminds me of a lot of favorite movies! (Including the scenery in the latest HP movie!)

Being on the South Shore of Long Island, the land's pretty flat. (Long Island was once the outwash moraine of a retreating glacier, if you must know --) But we have a lot of nice lakes. Some are manmade, like this pond w/artificial fountain and waterfall, by my Town Hall --
      [IMG]

Others are natural, like Argyle Lake -- a favorite spot for wedding pictures, since there's a bilevel area with white balconies, as well as smaller "gardens" set up:

    23. Sure, we'd love a before-and-after shot of that gorgeous house. ^^ Where in PA are you, the eastern half?

I can't believe I have never put Rainey's adventure photos in here. There have already been several pictures of Mt. Tamalpais and its surrounding rainforests & state park, and there will be more, because it's the closest place to San Francisco (just north across the Golden Gate) where you can be in some real wilderness. We cityfolks need a little fresh air now and then. And Rainey needs to climb things, otherwise he gets stir crazy...

On the trail to Laurel Dell, a massive fallen tree's root system provides a fantasy climbing-gym
      [IMG]

These little dry streams in summer will turn into mad gorgeous cascading waterfalls in winter-- this is a watershed area, so the whole landscape changes dramatically from dry season (blonde grass hills) to wet season (Lord-of-the-Rings-caliber moss formations).

The view of the ocean from the bluffs on the south face-- it's spring, so notice the grass is actually green
      [IMG]

Come back in October and it's like this.

But, no matter what time of year: When that famous fog comes in, it's "Ocean? What ocean?"

No, we are NOT getting a 1:3 hang-glider and flinging you down onto Stinson Beach, either, Rainey, so you can stop that wistful sighing... I swear, if it isn't "I want to be a Blue Angels pilot", then it's "I wanna go hang-gliding"...

    28. :D ZOMG alicethorn, when I wrote that thread intro about "the castle in your backyard" so long ago, I didn't quite expect that many folks would actually have one! That Biltmore house is excellent-- especially in the snow. What a grand sight to wake up to every morning.

I'm loving everybody's snow shots, but I expect you all must be getting pretty sick of snow by now. ^^

In winter we just have rain rain rain, so the big annual Chinese New Year parade through San Francisco's Chinatown is never rained out-- the 238-foot dragon, Gum Loong, & his court & his accoutrements all go out in any weather. Last month, a week before the parade, our friend Snowleopard got us access to meet this famous San Francisco icon up close and personal.

If you've ever seen any kind of lunar new year parade, you'll recognize those teeth anywhere.

      Yaaaaahhh!!

      That magnificent head
      [IMG]

His 238-foot, 38-segment body has to be coiled up this many times just to fit into the storefront, where he's being set up after being taken out of storage.

We made it a mini-meetup in this vacant storefront-- here you can see Market Street, main artery of downtown San Francisco, on a beautiful Sunday, reflected in the glass-- with all sorts of celebratory dolls to help show off the dragon in the window. Passersby were alternately quizzical and delighted. "Whoa, check out those dolls! Whoa, check out that dragon!" I think we appeared in a lot of tourist home videos that day. :>

      Big pic courtesy of Nathankatt.
And I like this pic, taken by Snowleopard; it shows off all those streetcar-wires on Market St:

"How much is that dolly in the window?..."

You can see these giant mummers' costumes of the Eight Immortals walking in their stately way through the parade every year. And a legion of outrunners & volunteers dancing around in those horse costumes, or carrying the poles that bear the Moons and Suns and roosters and fish and gongs and... and all manner of all things all done out in lucky red & gold.

    44. @Mimou, Saginaw MI is as good a place in the world as any other! I happen to know there's a whole song written about it, which makes it at least as cool as San Francisco. ^^ Be proud of your locale. That's why I started this game in the first place.

So it's time for Northern California in the Summer again! That is to say, cold-grey-and-foggy. Here's Stavros at Cowell's Beach in Santa Cruz (about an hour south of SF):

There's the municipal pier behind him... there would be more town + beach visible, but the fog is firmly in charge this morning.

The next morning, still trying to get a picture of the Pier from our hotel balcony-- nope, still fogged in.

If you want sunshine in Santa Cruz, you have to wait until afternoon.

But once that sun comes out, it makes sweet love to the whole coastline, and Santa Cruz turns into that California fairyland you see in the postcards, all lazy haze + candy-colored carnival rides + warm golden sunglow + sherbet sky. :chocoberry

The only good local playground. I go here a lot for photos, they have some fun scenery.

Before I got Take. I have a ton of photos before him. XD And before Tremis.

    51. Istvan (Iplehouse Claude) exploring Yerba Buena Center, in downtown San Francisco.

That funky round chisel-shaped building behind him is the Museum of Modern Art.

One of the fancy 4th St. hotels behind him - I forget which one that big silver jukebox-shaped building is, possibly the Hyatt.

      Outside the Contemporary Jewish Museum.

Istvan's new here, so he has plenty more exploring to do around town...

    53. Aww, those little boys look so cute in front of the Pagoda & going for sushi! <3

I forgot, I've also got some Japantown photos that I never posted here. Massimo (Iplehouse Ryan) went to the 2011 J-Pop Summit Festival with me.

We waited on line at the onigiri cart for 15 minutes only to find out that they had just run out of rice, & no more onigiri for another 25 minutes. Well! We know when to call it a day and just go find a bar.

Max was more interested in checking out the Lolita Contest, anyway.

    54. Aw, I love all the pictures. So many interesting places. I'm smack dab in the middle of Washington suburbia, and damn proud of it!

Tohru in a rainstorm last year, looking up the hill from the corner of my street (like, one house over). I guarantee the only thing different between then and now is that it's snowing instead of raining.

I love this area... there's pockets of trees and little interesting nooks and crannies. All the streets interconnect, so in the rain, or the last dregs of summer evenings, it feels like a maze hiding a secret if you can just find it.

    56. There's supposed to be snow on New Year's eve in Sweden, but that's what it looked like this year - and it's still not much better.

This is Flogsta, where half of the students in Uppsala live and party. I know it sounds weird, but I like this place ^^

    58. This was April or so of last year, but here's where I live in Utah, USA. I'm a Southern Californian originally, so Copernica and I were bemused by the idea of winter in April, and snow in general.
