World Where You Live (show me the scenery!)

Sep 18, 2007

    1. Show me your world! I want to see your little dolls living in your big world. It doesn't matter where you live, it doesn't matter if you don't live near anywhere exciting or glamorous, and I don't care if you're a great landscape photographer or not. If you live near a famous street, object, or landmark: so much the better. If you don't: then show me your backyard... your housing subdivision... your street... the view from your apartment building... the fields of your family farm... the forest behind your castle... the sunset, the skyline, whatever you can see from your window... anywhere.

I especially like visible streets and neighborhoods, skylines, or else landscapes. Anything that really shows me where you are. Not so much "a patch of grass visible from my porch", which could be anywhere. And the little details in life are extra-excellent: Billboards for products I've never seen, local storefronts, particular plants or grass native to your locale, street-signs, highways, farming setups, twisty suburban cul-de-sac streets, different styles of architecture particular to a city, all the things that strike you with a sense of terrain, a sense of place.

      Here's a couple examples:

I live in San Francisco. Here is Adrian in front of a fairly famous landmark, the wonderful dome of the Palace of Fine Arts. We were visiting there for a meetup.

However, I don't live-live up there, by the Palace. I live HERE, downtown. This is the south-facing view from the rooftop of my building on a sunny afternoon. There's a scraggly urban-diehard cypress tree, some not-too-glamorous skyline, the Clift Hotel, and the distant ridge of hills that seem to always frame Northern California views. This is the world that Sora & Seiya hang out in every day.

The backdrop you take for granted every day, while you're out & about your business-- that's what I wanna see! The world looks very different to your dollies than it does to you, so show me how they fit into it. :)

The land also holds the town's Civic Center and Library. Around Xmas, they set up a Santa's Village on the land.

One of the first shots I ever did of Shuichi, posing on our front walkway. He still had his default gold/brown eyes back then.

And, just for grins, Bodkin at the local renaissance faire. I show this because we basically lived out here on the weekends when we used to work the faire, way back when.

    5. Ohh, dig MH's kandy-girl totally owning the Great Washington Phallus! :D Too excellent!

Wow, so many country photos. I'm loving all these visible fruits & greenery. Serious terrain-envy for Gayle, here. ^^ I really don't get out of the city often enough.

NezumiMouse, I went to college in PA too; what part of the state are you in? It gets so pretty in Pennsylvania this time of year.

Onna, I will never forget Shuichi's visit to Santa. :mwahaha Shuichi is one of the great travelling dollie pioneers of our time! I was hoping to see some of his adventures up here. (Those Soo Ris are fearless. I must go poke aernath to put some of Ichi's wanderings up here. ^^)

Here are a few more from the City By the Bay:

One good phallus deserves another... there's Coit Tower, poking up in the background behind the Shiro-twins.

    25. We live near a beautiful ruined cathedral (bombed in WW2) but I haven't taken Rei there yet, waiting until I can get there on a weekday when it will be less crowded for pics.

Meanwhile here's Rei in the street outside my house. We live in a pretty average UK street, in a terraced house, but those of you who've never been to England might find it interesting. 28. Aha!!! Finally found an outdoor pic of my kids in Berkeley!

Bjds in San Francisco Financial District - this one is at The Embarcadero Center where I was asked to not take pictures and leave. Seems that the security there think pics will be used to blow up the place - I snapped this one before the guards descended on me and my photog friends.
We then went across the street and found the USA Korea friendship statue in a park!
The same park is now famous for having the wild parrots of telegraph hill show up every afternoon. But back when this pic was taken, they had fancy chickens and pigeons there! For one of my stories I had the birds look like they were attacking my Howl!

I know it's a total parasite plant, but gadzooks, it manages to add a note of decrepit romance to anything it dangles from. :D Your yard is so green. Serious green going on there.

And wow, lookit Idaho, with killer lens-flare. What a yummy photo is that.

Here is Spike on his first car-ride, doing the "are we there yet??" thing as we approach the SF skyline from the Bay Bridge.

Here's Grace Cathedral-- another big beautiful landmark. Rowan and his friend Lou (Frothy Coffee's Enn, left), somehow thought that the Cathedral was a perfect place for Juvenile Orion cosplay
      [IMG]

Sora, back up on the roof again. Our part of town really is far from glamorous. ^^ But I love the old brick & ductwork down there behind him. I think that's one of the Academy of Art buildings (there are many).

When I zoom in way way close on this one, I can see the "Hotel Amsterdam" awning, AND a person walking underneath it right at that moment! That's in the next street over-- the steepness of the hills here in SF give the illusion that one building is right on top of another. The bay windows everywhere, those are also very SF.

      Bonus:
Persephone (Serendipity Sharmin) and the view from the dining room window of where we used to live, a small apartment in Santa Clara, California. This was one of the first pictures I got with her, my first BJD, right after she came out of the box. :-)

    46. I do hope to get there someday... and will likely be bringing at least one of my dolls whenever I do. Taking them places for pictures is addictive! :-D
...Rain won't put me off. *lol* In Pennsylvania where I grew up, it gets so rainy and humid all summer that it feels like you need gills to breathe. XD (And then it turns cold and the snow lasts forever ^_^ Not like here in my part of Colorado where usually when it snows, it vanishes by noon. Silly altitude.)

This inspires me to post a pic of Sephiroth on the front porch of the house I grew up in...

I don't live there now, but I did up until college, so it should count XD

    48. There are many Ritzs throughout the world, but these are Zachary Ellis (Yukinojo) visiting San Francisco's...

...here he is outside, contemplating going inside...

...Zachary just quietly sitting in the lobby...

...he notices a menu to see what Chef Siegel is serving...food is always on our minds!

Zachary is always interested in finery. That is one huge China cabinet!

More art, this time a cast metal sculpture. Zachary's bright blue eyes are really shining at this piece of art.

This picture shows a hotel guest taking a snap of Zachary! There were some people who thought Zachary was a girl because of his long hair...it seems no one noticed his brawny build and arms...

And lastly, here is Zachary signing the guest book...

I hope it was alright to post these pics here; I wanted an easily recognizable landmark and the hotel sign was the closest thing I can find at the moment.
Please forgive the grainy pictures. Most of them were taken w/o flash to try and be discrete; hotel security frowns on cameras...

    49. Lani in the parking lot of the Varsity, downtown Atlanta.

Also in the same parking lot, the GA. tech campus in the background ( and I think the dorms? ) are across I-85.

:doh Jut now noticed Lani's kinda fuzzy in these pics.

    51. From my balcony, there's not much to see looking to the east. Just the building 90 degrees to us.

      To the north-west, however...

It's actually a residential area with a lot of really old, tall trees. This was taken in the early summer. Now the trees are all starting to turn colours.

And yes, he was VERY solidly on the railing. I would have never let go otherwise. Yet I still kind of have a bit of a heart attack just looking at this photoshoot now...

    53. *Joy overload!!* :aheartbea Scotland-which-sometimes-looks-like-Pennsylvania, and plastic-fantastic Georgia supermarkets, and cute little Swedish girls (with the proper woolly strumpfen) hanging out in magical forests, and posh hotels for glitzy little muscle-boys... I love local color...

(Oh, dear Ritzy Zachary, I see you are a man of expensive tastes, nyohoho. XD Nothing is too good for you. *smooch* Now go have the nice Ritz people make you some gold-leaf poached eggs for brunch.)

So how about some more cityscapes?

Laika and Karim, spending a little quality time alone on the rooftop on a gloomy Sunday morning...

I can tell that the fog is almost finished burning off for the day, because the "Hotel Huntington" sign is actually visible there in the background.
It looks like it's directly above my house, but it's two blocks away (the hill is way steep). When the afternoon fog comes charging back in like a rugby squad-- usually around 3 pm or so-- that sign is totally invisible. I look out the window in the morning, and I know whether or not I need to wear my hat. ^^

    54. Well, these are from when I lived in Nevada (I totally need to get some pictures of Washington with my dolls..). This is the Lamoille National Forest or at least a small part of it. XD The last picture was a bit terrifying to get as she was on a bit of a small crevice/shelf on a cliff and we were taking photos on a larger shelf we had climbed down to...
