Working with Apoxie Sculpt SW, Doll #2.

Jan 13, 2009

    1. Thanks. I have a MiniMee head that I've had forever, and I can't seem to sell the poor boy, and he's not perfect to begin with, there's some uneveness and flaws in his sculpt. I was thinking of doing a radical resculpt of him, fill in the dents, resculpt the lips and eyes. I was thinking of just covering the whole head in AS so he would stay one uniform color. Similar to the method shown in this Jungatoy tutorial. http://www.jungatoy.com/board/view.php?board_name=DREAMBOARD16&choose2=&choose1=&pagenow=1&CB=&ID=12 so it's nice and smooth, except Normal colored of course...

    2. Well, thank you for that. I do not usually post replies if that won't add anything usefull to the reader lol. That's why most of the time I do not post messages at all. :) I'm a beginner with not much skills to help others. Also have a full time business to run so I can't find enough time to go around to say hi to people.
But I don't want this to sound unkind, in any way, in fact I really want to apologize not to post much around. I do LOVE lots of people work in this forum and if I had the time I'd say that to them, and I also appreciate every single reply that I get on my posts and I am more than happy to answer each one of them.
Every time I come around and browse users work in this forum I get to learn more and more about the bjd world. You all rock!

    3. Can't believe I missed this, your sculpt is amazing! I love how natural the jointing on the torso looks. Usually when people cut it into more than three parts it begins to look insectoid, but your take on it is gorgeous.

    4. Thank you Sailor. I have been working on him long enough, I think I might cry if he ended up looking like a bug. =P I started him knowing that it was possible to make a beautiful sculpt with lots of movement and not have to sacrifice one or the other... But it wasn't easy. XD
I'm glad so many people are enjoying him. =)

    5. Ears applied, knees under construction, back getting there. I think I'll work on finishing his feet tomorrow.
I can't figure out how to post pictures in here using my phone.... So pictures on Monday. :)

    6. I really like the way the different pieces of the torso and hips interact - gorgeous work! makes me think about going back to work on a multipiece torso i started years ago - wonder if I could get it to look as cool as yours...

    7. It is an incredible work!!!! Really fantastic, I love the body and the face^_^

    8. And here we go, just a few... mostly the same but different angles, because I'm kinda lazy. :p

    9. He looks really polished and detailed, Ur doll is going to be fantastic :)

    10. wooooow.... The boy is really amazing :love Can't wait to see him with a wig, eyes and make up!!! *_* I'm going to fall in love~

    11. gosh thats amazing! fantastic job.

    12. Thank you everyone, I do my best so I'm glad you like my work. :))
There were a number of things I had wanted to try with the remaining joints I have yet to finish, but due to my own carelessness, I've run out of time and will have to cut out some of those plans. :pout It's my own fault, but get ready for some more of the same old joints as always. :p
:arrr I'm still waiting on the proper sized elastic string. Why does snail mail take sooooo long???... :sweat Never mind. :p

    13. For those of you who haven't seen the latest pictures yet, here they are. Sorry for the delay, I wasn't able to load any pictures for about a month but I'm able to now so NEW new pictures ASAP. :D (these are camera phone pics I had posted to FB awhile ago. :p )

He stands on his own...well enough... but his legs aren't done yet and I'm thinking about putting some more length back into them... maybe.
I may or may not be able to do some of the things I'm thinking about for his remaining joints, time will tell. :p

    14. He's looking great!

I think putting a little more length back into the legs isn't a bad idea. Technically right now he's wonderfully proportionate, but since BJDs tend to have longer legs, they look a little short compared to other dolls. I would suggest if you were to add length to the legs, add it to the calf, not the thigh.

    15. Thank you Miss Pygmalion. :)
Agreed, he's lacking that BJD flare. His legs before were crazy long, now he looks right but is lacking style. :p

    16. He is looking absolutely fabulous!! This is super awesome and the fact that your doing it all in AS is even more awesome!! I use ASSP too but i've only used it for detailing and fixing because you have to use the dremel in order to work with it.. right? Do you use anything else for the carving part? I find that i cant even take an exacto knife to it :/

    17. Wow, how do those hip joints work? I personally like his current proportions so only a slight increase in length would suit. I hope you put as much detail into his legs and arms as that gorgeous torso, though /drool :D

Ibrev, the amount of blades I'd go through in a week was absurd, but the fine details were worth the fuss on the smaller bits. :XD

    18. I use Exacto knives and a dremel, it depends on how small the details are. But I try to get as many details in before the clay dries, that way I don't feel like I'm wasting so much time and materials.

Right now he has "Shims" and smaller hip/thigh joints and under, (in the upper thigh) are unfinished joints for twisting. Hopefully it'll be less convoluted when he's done. :p
His arms are going to have more detail, the wooden balls especially need work but they are hard to carve so I've been avoiding them. :XD
But now I'm doing mostly details, unless I decide I can't go without some of the joints I have in mind. :p

    19. I continue to be awestruck by this guy. His jointing is so unique and innovative, and it all conforms so well with that gorgeous body (omg..seconding the 'drool'). Everything about him is fantastic, I love to see your updates. Agree with Miss_Pygmalion, he has perfect realistic proportions now, but if you want to tweak him a bit more to the standard bjd style adding a teeny bit to the shins would be the best. But I love him as is!

    20. hes amazing! god. I cant believe you got such fantastic detailing with apoxie.

    21. Are you going to add muscle definition to the legs? I know you said they are not done yet. Looking at this set of pictures a second time, that would be my biggest concern. All that lovely musculature in his torso, but his legs are oddly smooth in comparison.

    22. Yes they will look different once I'm done, right now I'm just trying to get a basic shape that I can be happy with before I gett back into details. :p

Here are some height comparisons with an A-line MNF. I apologize, these pictures are awful, but still get the job done.
I think I will be adding back some of the lost height, but maybe into the thigh more than the calves.
And feet, they still need a little bit of work, but this will be their finished size.

    23. The perfect fit I had in his hip joints changed once I added his legs on, so they pop out now and need to be cut back down. :XD One thing after another with this guy. lol. :p

    24. LOL. :XD

I've made my FaceBook "doll stuff" album public, because I post to it much more often and sometimes forget to post them here.... Though I'm not too sure if this will work... :sweat

      http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.176268205724727.39944.100000246463081

I've started adding other artists on FB, but not "anyone off the street", so if you decide to request me So you can see them right away let me know your name on the joint here so I know your not just anybody. :p ...But be warned I post useless spam like horoscopes, fortune cookies and tarot... and Farmville,... "oh, the shame!" :XD

    25. Okay, I'm having an issue with his legs.... He's putting all his weight onto his left leg and letting the right leg go a little slack and slightly bent at the knee, even though by all of my measurements his left leg is shorter of the two?.... Maybe I've been looking at him for too long and can't see it, I need some fresh eyes for this. Can you see any difference in the length of his legs/ lower torso-ish? or anything that may be causing this issue?

    26. That guy looks super. You have done a great work with his joints, never saw a doll with that many parts. It look so scary, I mean, to plan for all those parts working together. :) Great work OutsideTheBox!

    27. Maybe it's that his legs aren't stopping at the same point when he's standing? Like, the knees are both catching, but maybe one is catching at a slightly different angle, so while they are (pretty much) the same length, the different bend is causing an imbalance.

    28. Oh that's a good theory. I'm going to look into that, hadn't thought of that. Thank you. :D

:blush Thank you, he's a labor of love, I'm very excited to see him so close to being finished. :))

    29. If the holes for the stringing channels aren't in exactly the same spot it can cause this too. I've got similar problem with my unicorn girl at the moment, still not sure what's wrong.

    30. LOL!
This is a very amazing sculpt.
Do you have a pair of dial calipers?
It is impossible to see any difference from the photos.

What else, besides a difference in lengths, could cause such a problem?

    31. I think I found it. His right thigh/leg joint for rotation is still lose and it makes the leg lean to the outside.
I found it after swapping his knee joints around with each other to see if it was the stringing channels in those, and "tada" it was the upper thigh. :p
Thanks for the helpful ideas everyone. :)

    32. Gah, I was wrong. Still trying to figure out what is wrong with his legs.... :pout
On the plus side, his thigh joint isn't lose anymore. :XD

    33. Problem solved. The height difference was in his knees jointing. :p
I've made some changes to his face that I'm very pleased with. Pictures may not happen for a while though. :sigh :p

    34. Just some shots of his head.

I'm exceedingly happy with his face now and, baring the unthinkable, I won't be changing it anymore. :blush I've got a pair of 12mm glass high-domes in him now they gap A LOT but I love their color (Lt. Blue w/Brown pupil) so I've left them in regardless. :p
      ....
I may do some more work to his mouth, seeing it in pictures, it seems kind of flat still.....

    35. His face is amazing, very expressive, I love the realism, especially his nose and ears. His mouth looks fine to me, not flat at all.

I'm looking forward to more progress ^_^

    36. Very nice!

I think, looking at the profile shot, the reason his mouth looks flat is that the upper and lower lip protrude the same amount. In most dolls (and real people for that matter!) the upper lip protrudes a little farther than the lower.

    37. Wow, this is really impressive! I just went through the whole thread and watched him progress. What great jointing on the torso, he can hold such wonderful poses! I think adding some muscle tone to the legs when you get his jointing finished will even out his look. There's so much great detail in his torso, I feel like it should balance to do that detail justice.

great job! I can't wait to see him cast!

    38. And...I'm back. Today will be the first day in a long time that I'm able to sit down and work on this guy. I've been thoroughly bogged down in helping my friend make EVERYTHING for her wedding, her theme is something like DIY...she's crazy, but I love her to bits, which is lucky for her because I've made two veils for her.... if she decides she doesn't love the one I've just finished for her..she might not live long enough to get married. XD
      BACK TO WORK! =D

    39. THIS - and then some.... Wow - I haven't snooped in your thread for AGES... a masterpiece is unfolding!!!! Holy Crap Batman! If I could be you for a day.... I'd have a head the size of Jimmy Neutron's!!

    40. Though I sound like a mimic, I find it very interesting that you're working in epoxy. I'm considering I might have to do some items in epoxy on the little one I just started for structural reasons. Do you work well with the sticky texture or do you let it sit before working? I find with Aves I have to let it rest for about 15 minuets before I can do anything with it but get it stuck to my fingers (even with wet finger tips). Also, as your jointing looks incredibly wonderful, I was wondering how much the joint cut at the lowest ab set meeting the pelvis helps? Most of the movement seems to come from the joint above it in pictures, but it has me quite curious.
I hope that you can find more time to work on him soon~

    41. Small update...=P
Here's what he currently looks like.
I had wanted to make his hands and feet a kind of "one touch system" but I haven't been able to get the joints to fit tight enough, so I set that aside and just did "S-hooks". I'll go back to those plans when I figure out a way to craft them....maybe I'll do it in wood, seeing as that's how I first learned to do it...=P
Also, I changed his neck and shoulders. I liked them before but I think now he doesn't look so much like the monster from "The Keep". XD
      [IMG]
Face is done, I've stopped messing with it. I'm happy with its proportion to the body and its overall appearance. =)
      Just playing with him. XD
I'm always happy with how he's progressing, I've tried so many different things and found what works best for the things I want from my doll, so even though he's become the world's longest doll project, I haven't quit on him and that's what makes me happiest. =P I'll get him done sooner or later, it might go faster if I weren't such a stubborn perfectionist. XD

Thank you to everyone for all the comments and such. C=

    42. LOL I love Steve Oedekerk. I have Kung Pow memorized, it drives my husband bonkers. XD I'm a bit too mellow and low energy to get a big head for pride, but I feel like I have just as many crazy ideas as Jimmy. XD

    43. I work with it sticky and up until it's too hard to push around anymore, don't waste one moment. I wear gloves while mixing it and when it's sticky.

His last torso joint helps the most when he leans forward, but because of its shape it doesn't look like it does much otherwise. for me each joint is a choice about how natural it looks vs. the amount/type of movement it gives. I'd rather have more joints that give a little movement but make for overall natural looking movement/curves rather than one or two that give big unnatural bends.

    44. wow it's stunning ! the body is very nice ^^

    45. Okay, not really anything new with this guy lately. I did spend 9+ months making this beautiful OOAK baby girl. (NFS) Taking care of her has been nonstop for the last few months, but bedtime is starting to be less troublesome so, baby willing, I may be able to start working on him again after bedtime.
Only problem is my clay might have reached it expiration date as the grey part has begun to yellow/ separate, I experimented with kneading the grey part before mixing it with the white part and it seems to have cured properly, but I haven't cut into it yet....so the inside could possibly still be soft/uncured. {=I
BUT, needless to say, I don't have a whole lot of time nowadays, so progress will be slow. =P
      Sorry.=)

      Also, I had to give up my "art room" and move everything back into the computer room...so now I have to take my drilling/sanding outside, again. --_--;

    46. This is really awesome! I am very impressed by the posing and the look he's got. (Also, I started my current project just because my apoxie sculpt had started to separate and go weird so I wanted to use it up before it became unusable, and it's cured properly and I can sand it and everything, so hopefully yours will still be workable too.)

    47. Aww, congrats! And I've used Apoxie when it gets like that, it seems to work fine. Your guy looks almost finished though, what more do you need to do? Are you planning to have him cast?

    48. I am planning to have him cast. Right now I'm balancing his parts and redoing most of his joints. I'm redoing his shoulders, hips and knees. I may redo his elbows too...Everything is tightening up nicely, there are a lot less gaps and he's not leaning uncontrollably. Having so little time to work has REALLY helped me focus and plan EVERYTHING. I'm no longer backtracking and making stupid mistakes, if I weren't so determined to finish this guy id start another and have it done much faster with all the tricks I've picked up. :P

I don't know when I'll be able to post pictures, pictures are not high on my priorities list right now. :|

Thank you everyone for your encouraging feedback and comments, I really appreciate every one of them. :D

    49. OMG he's back!!! -flails happily- So glad to see you are still working on this neat fellow!!

    50. THOSE CHEEK BONES!!! You are so good at sculpting. He really looks terrific. I haven't tried apoxy clay. How long do you have before it sets? Good job.

    51. He's done. Right now I'm looking for a place to have him cast.
