I've started a new doll today, this time I'm using Apoxie Sculpt (Super White). I'm very happy with the ASSW for sculpting and even more so because I don't have to bake it. I like using an air dry clay because it makes me work fast so I can't change my mind a lot the way I was when I was using Super Sculpy and once it gets too hard to push around and change things it's time to put it down and walk away. I love that! As it's time now to put it down and walk away thought I'd post what I've done so far today. The grey part is the last of my regular Apoxie Sculpt. Hopefully tonight I'll be able to add the face. Once I'm done with the head I'll do a sketch of the body and work off of that, but I find with heads they just have to come to me or I'll spend too much time fussing over little details on the sketch and the clay, but I think it's pretty easy to see where I'm going with this head... another mature mini man, maybe elf. All in good time.
Nose and mouth Time to stop and walk away and go post progress. Clay dried up before I got to add eyes, but still thing are moving along. He's starting to look like Owen Wilson to me, LOL, it's making me rethink the cleft chin I was going to add, Not trying to make any minime's here. Hope I get time to work on him tonight. )
really nice profile and head shape - he is going to be awesome! I really wish I could use apoxy sculpt! so nice to have such a strong, caveable and sandable substance to use...
He's very realistic... the mouth and cheekbones look nice. Also looks like his head is nicely shaped, well-rounded out in the back.
Update I was having a really hard time settling on an eye shape, so I just filled in the hole area let it dry and later Carved out one side then the other. Not sure what I'm going to do for his ears, I have a couple of ideas but I'm going to draw up some bodies and then decide once I know what species he'll be. For now I'm setting his head aside, everything else that needs to be done to him can wait until I've finished his body. "To the drawing board!" :arrr :XD
I frittered away last week drawing a couple of different body types (some I like a lot) but because I'm only working on one at the moment, that's what I'm going to post. This week I decided that because I'm using air dry clay that I could use styrofoam as a base. I'm loving Apoxie sculpt more and more. :p Cut out the base yesterday and today I'm putting a layer of clay on it to make it even firmer and I started some hands. I'm going to be out of clay soon, got to remember to buy more so I don't put him up and forget about finishing him , and I'm making such good time too. :pout I think I'm going to call this head Richard, he looks like a Richard right? :XD
Oh, I get so distracted by all the cool stuff to see here, I forget to thank everyone. Thank you everyone for taking the time to comment on my work, it really does mean a lot to me.
have you tried cutting through any apoxy clay yet? I'm curious as to if it is crumbly or not. I have a bad reaction to miliput so i really admire the smoothness you're getting as opposed to sculpey which can get lumpy. I like his face and strong jawline ^_^
It's not crumbly at all, it's pretty tough stuff, I had to use the highest speed on my dremel just to cut the face away from the head back (in post # 6) , The head is thickest at the bottom but around the top it's a little less than 1/4". If you add paint to Apoxie Sculpt (+SW) it does lose some density and if it's too much it gets crumbly.
i would have to say that his profile is amazing. [; i love that type of nose~ so far, i think he looks a little pensive.
Very nice sculpt. I'll have to try this epoxy clay you are using. It looks like it's wonderful to work with. I've been struggling with my present method and never thought of using a two part air dry clay. I've used it in the past to repair dolls and puppets but never to actually make them. Thanks.
Still working hard I've been working on him like crazy, and now that I'm working on the body I stop less. When one part is drying I just move onto another, so I haven't been taking pictures, sorry. Here is an update on my work. Hands, still a WIP. As you can see I cut his arms off, they were in my way when I was trying to work on his sides and I couldn't get at the insides of the arms ether, so off they came. Once I cut them off things went smoothly but I stopped working on the arms themselves. :XD
Oh lord... how big is he again? I gotta say, the body is AMAZING so far!!!!! It's manly and muscly and delicious! There are not enough bodies like this in the community. Are those lines on the torso how the jointing is going to be? Great work so far! Can't wait to see how the legs turn out!
I love him! His face, hands, everything! The only thing that's bugging me is his abs... I think you have too many. This might help:
Yes he does have an 8-pack, they are not terribly common but on occasion I find men in muscle magazines that have them . Although the two at the top are too big, I've been thinking about making his pecks a little bigger and shrinking those two, but the rest might get shrunk down when I start cutting him apart and adding joints, for now I'm just rolling with the punches. :XD
:XD They don't look quite like this but more squished together (really buff guys with short looking torsos) but you can count 8. I'll dig up a pic from one of my magazines and see if my scanner will work today.
Scanner says "no way." can't seem to figure out whats wrong with it, so I pulled some pictures/links off the web. This is the site I like to browse. (IFBB professional league ) http://www.ifbbpro.com/index.php I've only seen it on guys who work out a LOT, these guys are almost there, you can see them starting to work it in under the bellybutton. http://ifbbtv.com/video3/webready2.jpg http://www.ifbbpro.com/wp-content/uploads/image/halloffame/FlexWheeler1.jpg This guy just has strange abs to me, he's in a ton of pictures/magazines. http://www.australianmuscle.com.au/wallpaper/Ronnie.jpg Another guy with weird ones. http://www.ifbbpro.com/wp-content/uploads/image/halloffame/IrvinKoszewski1.jpg
He's bigger than most MSD, until he's all done I can't give an exact height, on paper he's about 20" but it may change, he's still a WIP. Yes the lines on the torso are where he will have joints. I'm very eager to get to the jointing stage because I have lots of new ideas to try...or at least I think they are new ideas. I'm working on the legs now and should have another up date soon. Thank you everyone for your time and comments!
Aww... seems almost a shame to split up such a nice six-pack. Bit I still think it will be interesting to see how it looks in the end.
i think the cutting lines should conform to the muscles, otherwise it would look a bit odd... but then again, he is going to wear clothes anyway
really nice headshape! how is it joining to the neck? will the back piece continue forward under the front piece and the neck hole will be in that? great palms too - how do you plan on jointing the hands? are you going to be augmenting the clay in the wrist ball area by bending the armature wire into a loop? really beautiful masculine sculpt!
I haven't updated in the longest time, but I have been working on him. I did change his stomach/ torso to accommodate the joints I'm making. I'm still fine tuning his legs, some how they look totally different form each other. One knee is high up, one thigh is too big the other too small, one calf is super ripped and the other is more what I was going for... their going to be a lot of work. It's not visible but his face plate system is done. Now I have to give him some ears. :p This picture is a little old now but I don't know how much I be updating from this point onwards, so brace yourself for another picture dry-spell. "Thanks!" for all the good advice and support, you all are the best!
ooooh, he's quite handsome. Yes, he looks like a Richard. I had to look at him some first to get the idea of my old French teacher out of my head (who was also a Richard) and then I could totally see it.
I am resurrecting an old thread! Firstly, because I'd love to know if there are any updates on this cool sculpt. Secondly, I have a question or two. I was considering using this technique for my next attempt. How thick is the Apoxie Sculpt shell around the styrofoam? Is it easy to clean out the styrofaom from the shell? Is the AS strong even though it is thin?
I have made a small amount of progress, but not as much as I'd like, I have a lot going on right now. :dead The AS is pretty strong but ,so far, anything less than 1/8 of an inch snaps off pretty easily so I try to keep it about 1/4" (or more) all over. My hands have a wire frame, none of the fingers have broken off and I'm kinda mean to them. :XD I got the Styrofoam out but the inside is still shaped by it, next time I'm going to cover it in something... maybe plastic wrap... LOL Sorry for the late reply.
No new pictures yet, BUT I have finally finished with all the junk that was keeping me from working on him, I spent yesterday working on him. I'm so excited, I'll try to update soon.
I ran out of clay again (about a month ago), but I've JUST ordered more today. Things might go a lot faster if I weren't so broke all the time.
I saw this thread just now and I must say I am deeply impressed. So much looking forward to updated pics!
Hope to see some photos of your work soon. Everything that I've seen so far is great. He is really a nice sculpt. Please keep us posted.
Okay, here's some pics, not too specific of the work I've been doing but better than nothing. :p I'm working on the joints so I'm trying to fit pieces back together and eliminate all of the gaping I can. This part is a LOT of back and forth, checking for gaps, checking the movement, re-sculpting to keep the overall appearance of the body pleasing to the eye....I want lots of movement but I don't want to give up any of the sculpt to accommodate the joints. The poor guy, his hip region is a terrible mess because that's where I want the most amount of movement, but his bum was so nice....I'm still working it out. :XD These pics show the stuff that I started/did that I had been neglecting, feet and nipples. The start of the knee joint, gaping in the torso area and how the torso joints are fitting together. I strung together the top part of the torso the other day and was some what pleased with it but found it desperately needed a "lip" on the back for the chest piece to rest on, that's what all the white is in the pic of the back; the start of a "lip". .......and.... I also put a MNF head on it to cheer myself up, SQUEEE! even girl MNF look masculin and mature on it...so yeah, I'm so hyped up to finish it. I'll post again but maybe not anytime soon, sorry. Thanks to everyone for all the encouragement and comments, it's really uplifting to know people like my work.
For the really smooth parts fine grit sand paper, it doesn't show here because the pics come up small but I still have a lot of little scratches and dimples to work out. I do a little of sculpting and a lot more carving. I'm usually happier with the carving, it gives me lots of control and I don't accidentally squish other parts while I'm working in one area.
LOL, Yeah, his chest looks huge right now because I made the rib part/ joint under it a little smaller, but it's much better with the arms on, their pretty big too.
Thank you everyone. I love the positive (and negative,... sometimes) feedback, it's really uplifting. Making changes to his face, thinning him up a bit, he looks too bobble-headed...pictures to come later.
Ok I might be ready to put this head aside and make another one :pout I love it until I put it on top of the body.... I just made the proportions of the face too big, I think. The pictures with the black wig are before I slimmed down the face, the blond wig pics are from after. (black rubber band because It doesn't have any magnets in yet. :p ) And with a MNF head. This is what I've had sitting on my desk for motivation... I think I'll let my head sit for awhile, work on finishing the body, and go back to it later...
I think you might be right re head proportions - the blonde version does look better but oh! the mnf head looks fabbo on that uber awesome body!!!
Yeah, the MNF head looks so good with this body, it's not even funny. I'm defenetly going to make another head later. Smaller all around with more stylized face proportions, like what I did with my first head. (An Elf made of sculpy, which funny enough looks good on this body but the sculpy is so brittle I don't think I can cast that head. )
Thought I commented on this before but guess not ><. That torso is SO BRILL, actually it all is, I absolutely love the unique way you've jointed the sections and how smooth it looks together. The head size looks okay to me but it's hard to judge without seeing the whole body or the arms attached. Maybe you could shrink it with molding, if you plan to cast him? It might bring the size down just enough.
I'm definitely going to save the head and maybe sometime in the distant future use it as motivation to make a larger SD-ish sized body. I think the face would be better suited to an SD sized body and I wouldn't have to make too many changes to make it work, ie enlarging the neck hole and maybe the head back....but for now I'm just going to finish what I have started. Also... Yes I do want to cast this doll in resin, but I don't know that I'll be selling it; like making my own business. I like the look of the Dollshe casting service and I have some money saved so I could afford it, so in that case I would end up with extra that I would sell...??? All in due time I suppose.
Oh my god, I just saw the most beautiful male butt in my new muscle mag. Now I'm going to put it on my doll. Also did a knee joint that I think I'll be happy with, it's kinda basic and it needs more work right now but it already works, movement wise, so I'm pretty happy with it. :/
In no particular order... It's not done (mostly the wrist joint) but I'm pretty happy with it, right side is only a few steps behind. And my elf head on this body, it looks so good, the size is just right...maybe I'll make the new one a little smaller though. I'm feeling pretty accomplished today, even though all I've been doing is filling gaps. :XD
really interesting wrist joint - and lovely elbow joint too. how on earth do you get the apoxie so smooth?
