WITHdoll Mini Discussion Part 8

Apr 8, 2016

    1. I had looked at the color comparison by withdoll, but it doesn't have honey brown in it, and two different brown tan. So it seems too old to help me decide.
I did also look for owner pictures on Instagram before coming to the thread, but a lot of the time people don't state which color they own.
I would love to see a honey brown and brown tan doll side by side, that would definitely be the best help to decide. A recent brown tan photographed to show how it looks in real would also be great to see if it's too dark for me.

    2. In Withdoll's new color chart all the browns are shot together with the exception of the brown tan. The latter being together with the greys, but they have all been shot in the same conditions likely with manual camera settings, so it's very accurate. In my comment I was referring to that color comparison specifically, sorry I didn't make it more clear. I would not recommend a computer generated sample image. The reason colors often look redder in comparisons is because they've been shot next to colors that don't have as much red, so those tones come out. Yes, the doll might not look as red by itself but that's color theory again. For owner pictures to be helpful I feel like you really need the comparison next to it, because otherwise colors look wildly different. I used to have a lot of trouble explaining rosy brown to people because it can look purple, dark grey, pale grey, brownish etc. entirely depending on the lighting. Even in my photos, I have shoots where my girl looks very purple and others where she's dark grey -even wearing the same clothes, it's just the light that's different.

Being the person that took the comparison photos you linked, I can quite confidently say that the new color chart Withdoll took is quite accurate. I'd love to do an updated comparison of my own, but I don't have samples of the new colors, so that'll have to wait until I buy something from them and ask for samples. I do have a honey brown sample, but my brown tan samples are ooold. Like 10 years old, and the urethane brown is now paler than honey brown, and the UV resin version (which they don't sell anymore) is darker. I do, however, have some newer photos with honey brown from 2021 in my blog post towards the bottom, but it's not a good comparison with brown tan, because as I said, the brown samples I have are old. Would love to see more photos of that color in general.

I was referring to Withdoll's new color chart. It's on most of the listings and it's on their instagram here. That should be more helpful than the older comparisons.

I do also have a honey brown sample and I can take any photos of it (though we're in winter and it's dark indoors) but it's only feet, so a small piece, and I can't compare it to a new brown tan as my samples of that are 10 years old (they've improved their color mix since). I linked my blog post above, and it has a few comparisons with the honey brown, but you shouldn't use those to compare it to a new brown tan.

    3. Wow, I have seen some of the pictures from your blog in Google search and they are so professional looking, I thought they must be by withdoll themselves.
Do I understand correctly that withdoll can give sample pieces of the resin colors? I thought about asking for samples of the rosy browns, so that would be amazing.

I would like my Ruby in a tan darker than Sooms tawny, around Ringdoll tan would be nice.
Maybe I should skip buying her and just get Kiara in blue (the second girl I am considering) and ask for tan samples. Seems like the limited girl's come back every now and then

    4. Thank you, I just attempt to take them in as natural light as possible with a neutral background and that's it. Don't have fancy studio light equipment so that I could go down that route.

And yes, you can ask, but it's not guaranteed that they will have samples for you. I maaay be able to help with that comparison though. I don't have a Soom Tawny, but I do have a bronze, which is a shade darker (unless you happen to get one of those very light ones because soom is super notorious for their skin tones being all over the place, lol). That, and my Honey Brown are both from 2020 and they're almost the exact same color. Granted the honey brown has been in storage and the headback has been out -but not in direct sunlight, I don't think it's changed colors much yet as it is quite new:

(I mean, I also have another bronze head from Soom and it's way yellower than the first one and they weren't made that many months apart, so uhh, go Soom.)

In general I'd assume honey brown is darker than Soom tawny, but I know nothing about Ringdoll colors, so can't say about those. Asking for color samples is always an option but not a guarantee. :)

    5. Personally I think my brown tan Olivia looks very close to the sample on your old comparison picture. She's definitely not as dark as the head on Withdoll's comparison picture.
But maybe the 2023 brown tan is darker than the one from 2022. I don't really know how much Withdoll's resin colors vary between years.

And here's a comparison picture together with some resins from other companies. But I don't know if you happen to have any of these.:
Again it's really hard to photograph and the red untertones always get eaten (that happens with white resin as well btw). I tried to manually add some red to make it look more accurate.

    6. Thank you for the comparison. I have heard about Soom not being good with color consistency :sweat My boy is from 2021.

    7. Thank you so much. I do not own any of those tan colors sadly, just a little Monica normal which should (more or less) be the same as Luts normal.

The Luts rosy brown looks quite similar in color to Withdoll brown tan? Maybe I can find more pictures with dolls in that color to help me get a feeling for it :)

    8. Yes Little Monica NS is very similar to Luts NS. I have both and they work very well for hybrids. Luts rosy brown is a lot more purple than Withdoll brown tan. In real life it looks most similar to BlueFairy baked skin but it photographs rather differently.

I think @Yenna 's comparison pictures are very accurate. At least for the brown tan from 2022. Maybe it's worth it to ask Withdoll how different the 2023 colors are compared to 2022.

      • x 1
    9. Thank you, I will try ask withdoll about the possible color difference between 2022 and 2023.

    10. Withdoll answered, the 2023 tan brown is a bit different they said.
They think it's a bit darker than 2022 and the mixture a bit different because of the fact it's a new mix.
Yeah, that's not helping with the decision between tan brown and honey brown :sweat

    11. You could always blush honey brown to be slightly darker if it turns out to be lighter than you'd like. Are you planning to get your doll blank or with faceup?

    12. With face up, since I love Rubys company face up.

    13. I decided to order Ruby in honey brown, can't wait to get her.

    14. I'm looking forward a lot to seeing what the 2023 resin colours look like in real life. I did have a brown tan UV Angela from the beginning 2014 but unfortunately I made the bad decision of selling her a few years back and have regretted that choice. So during this event I decided to do something about that and purchased a new brown tan Angela and a Normal skin Emma. It's going to be wonderful to see them when they arrive.

It's been quite long since I was looking for clothing for the Withdoll JWD body and I wonder if anyone has suggestions for clothing and shoe brands that fit well on the new body type?

    15. Here's my withdoll hyrbid (vampire rachel on myou v2 body). Shes like a thiccer fashion scale bjd now on this size body lol. Want to darken up her lips a bit and make her some custom eyes that are the right size but otherwise im really happy with her! Anyone else have success with good withdoll mini hybrids?

    16. That's a really good looking combination. I'm obsessed with vampire rachel right now, no idea how I'm ever gonna pick my first doll :sweat

    17. With 10% off in the spring event and jwd Eve being available, I'm really tempted... Does anyone else happen to have an Eve they can post pics of to help me decide? :sorry

    18. I got my Emma and Angela dolls today. I really should be happy about this but after seeing the dolls I am disapointed when comparing to what my old 2014 Angela looked like. The 2014 Angela had no visible seamlines on the tan skin and the skin color was really beautiful. The 2023 Angela in tan skin is a mess of seam lines (some badly pre-sanded leaving the resin in a different color) and while I do know the sales page states that there may be seamlines this is not at all the quality I expected.

    19. That's sad to hear :(
I don't understand why they would sand a tan doll, it's known to leave a different color. Sounds like they found the seamlines too much themselves and wanted to remove some.
I would definitely be disappointed too.

My Ruby should ship soon, she is in one of the lighter tans, now I am afraid.:shudder

    20. Do you have pictures? Where are the sanded bits? And was your original doll UV resin? Their seamlines were much less noticeable and sanding them didn't make much of a colour difference either so those dolls will be much smoother. All current dolls are urethane resin and it just behaves differently and nothing can really be done to prevent that. Dolls will have seamlines.

However, in my experience Withdoll's seams are very small compared to many other companies that feel like I could cut my finger on them. My newest grey girl has seamlines and some spots where the excess was sanded off (which is absolutely normal), but they're so small that I didn't bother smoothing them out myself. Which is saying a lot as I hate seams and usually sand all my dolls that can handle it. Her seams are exactly the same as my 2012 urethane rosy brown girl: they're there but not very bothersome. All tan urethane dolls will have these issues -depending on the company some gate marks are more obvious than others.

    21. I don't enjoy complaining about a company but in this case I am upset since I was expecting something completely different from what was actually delivered. In my years collecting dolls I've had dolls with everything from not a seamline anywhere to "how on earth am I ever going to work with this?" but maybe I was simply expecting too much from Withdoll when compared to my old tan doll.

I will keep my fingers crossed that your Ruby arrives looking absolutely beautiful.

Unfortunately not at this point but I can see if I can post some when I prepare images for the marketplace.

I will admit to being picky about seams but when there are seams I always do all sanding myself to deal with it. And I think that is part of what upsets me here since I'm experienced in working with resin and getting good results but from all I can see of the doll this will be more work than it is worth and it just makes me sad.

Some areas have been sanded (like the side of her hands, shoulders, back of the head and so on. But the sanding is not well done so it hasn't actually removed the seamline at all, only made it more visible by turning the resin from a nice brown tan colour to a greyish brown shade. What I don't understand is why anyone would sand some parts of a doll but not complete the job and still leave very noticeable, not at all sanded (cut-your-finger or shred the outfits sharp) seamlines on some parts.

I did check and my old Tan doll was the UV resin so that might explain a few things. It's all very unfortunate but hopefully I can sell the dolls to someone who will be okay with the seamlines and the way they look.

    22. Well, as Withdoll doesn't generally remove seamlines, those spots are likely where the gates are removed. Aka there's a peg in the resin that has to be sawed off and then the resin evened at that point -so it has to be sanded and it will change the color or the resin at the sanded spot. It's not just surface sanding at that point, it's removing a piece and exposing the inside of the resin. All my darker tone dolls have spots like that at certain places, including my darker Withdolls at those spots: top of the upper arms, sides of the hands etc. Honestly I never paid attention because those are things that all my tan and grey dolls have (as they're all regular urethane), thought they're the most noticeable on my Dollshes. I did look at my rosy brown girl and her shoulder marks are a bit smaller than the new girls'. I suspect the old body's mold just had slightly smaller pouring holes than the new one.

But yes, hopefully they'll find a home with someone who doesn't mind the marks.

    23. Indeed, though I did also used to have a White Skin doll (non UV skin) and she didn't have the large seamlines either so I suppose this differs between individual dolls or when they are made, and of course like you said before if the resin type has changed. I agree there would be certain spaces where the resin needs to be sanded after the casting. However, the dolls I received still look bad and I feel there is a difference between necessary flaws and what was delivered this time.

Yes, hopefully I can get rid of them in some way and recover some of the money.

    24. I have a question about Withdoll heeled feet - what are the highest shoes you've managed to get them into? They seem to be bent at such a small angle I'm suspicious about the available shoe choice for them.

    25. @cobaltconduct I admittedly do not own a lot of heels for my MSDs (a lot of the styles don't appeal to me) but I do own these: 40GF-S1 (DB)
and my Elf Ruby stands great in them. I know it isn't a very high heel but I also am cautious of overly high heels since they can make standing difficult.

      • x 1
    26. The angle may not be big (to accomodate more types of shoes) but the ankle ball has a ton of motion (in the new body especially), so my girls stand fine in even very high heels. She could stand in these (30mm heel) but they're big for her. She can stand in these (~25mm heel). And in all tonner 22" fashion shoes with heels 10mm to 25mm heels that I own (many of these styles as long as the foot itself fits into them, the heel isn't an issue.

    27. Hello every one.
I bought the previously mentioned Emma from JAS101 and after a lightning fast transaction it arrived yesterday.
I'm very excited about her, but with the short time from decision (thursday) to having the doll in my hands (monday), I have aboslutely nothing ready hor her. I am in the wonderful, fun, chaotic and frantic phase of simply trying everything I have on her and see what sticks.
      I'm having a blast! :whee:

I'll post some pictures as soon as I can get her somewhat presentable.

@Yenna Those, dollmore heels, do they fit her or did you just mention them as an example of ability to stand in heels? I was eyeing them earlier, but based on the measurements the seem big. For reference, some of the Narsha shoes I have actually fit my Emma pretty well, except they are a bit wide and dollmore MSD shoes tends to run large in my experience, but i also know how different shoes can fit from shoe type to shoe type even when the measurements are similar, so I am curious.

      • x 1
    28. Yes, she fits in them. The toes don't reach all the way to the end and the ankles gap a tiny bit but they're slim and nice looking on her, unlike many bulky msd heels. Not the same for all dollmore shoes though, but those specific ones are very slim.

    29. Oh, nice! Thank you so much for the photo, that helps a lot. :D

    30. Sorry about the double post, but I gave my new doll a faceup yesterday and wanted to share.

I still don't have a clear plan for how to style her, but I am making progress.
The faceup is very basic and I will refine or redo it as I develope her further. The wig is temporary, but I think that at least the hair color is close to what I want, perhaps a bit redder. I have to get her a wig anyway, since this one belongs to another one of my dolls. The eyes are temporary as well. They are simply what I had in my stash that fitted the best and they are tiny little 8mm oval flatbacks. They do sit very well in the head, but I prefer a larger iris. They don't look bad, but they are not quite what I want.
      Her name is Petronella.

      • x 6
    31. She looks super cute, temporary bits or not! ♥

    32. Thank you! I'm having a lot of fun figuring her out.

    33. Your girl looks great, @Lillith ! Emma (the elf hunter version, but still) was my first BJD, so this sculpt has a special place in my heart.

    34. Thanks! Emma sounds like a great choice for a first doll. She is incerdibly versatile. I played around a bit when painting her and found it possible to give her very different expressions and she looked great in both bold and natural colours.
      Do you still have her?
My first was a Lati Shaina and nearly two decades later, she is still my absolute favourite.

      • x 1
    35. Yes, I do have her, she's never going away. She's my precious treasure and when I die, I'll be buried in a mausoleum of my own with all my dolls around me, and she'll be displayed on the shelf of honour right above my head (together with my SWD Vera and my first Smart Doll).

    36. Hello everyone!
I am seriously considering getting a Theo to shell a character. However my character is around 25 or 26 years old, and his company pics look a bit young for that. Does anyone have a Theo they styled to be a bit older? I would love to see if it isn't too much trouble! Thank you!

    37. a great makeup artist can do wonders. However, the sculpt is still going to have a larger head than a real human would have, so it'll always be stylized. if you want a realistic look, I'd look at Iplehouse FID dolls?

    38. I need his bigger head so he looks right with the doll who will be his SO. I actually tried a more realistic sculpt first and they looked terrible together. Just weird. I think Theo will be perfect if I can make him look a bit older.

That said I do love Iplehouse sculpts, I just don't have a use for one.

    39. Did Withdoll just discontinue a bunch of dolls? I was looking at the website, and I love the new look, I like how things are organized, but a lot of basic dolls just straight up aren't there (both JWDs and SWDs), and I didn't see any notice about that...

    40. Hopefully, they just haven't added them to the website yet. :shudder

    41. Hi I have a question about Withdoll's color honey brown. I don't know how this compares to other typical tan skins. For example, is it much lighter or darker than Fairyland tan?

I'm looking for a body for an iMda tan skinned head, which isn't too far off from Fairyland tan. I'm not that particular about matching colors, but I don't want it too be too light or too dark.

      Thanks!

    42. Hello. It's my first time saying hello. I'll come here often and talk to you from now on. Please understand even if my English is not good.

    43. @cello151 Hello, and welcome to the thread! :) Good to have you here.

Here is my dear Priscilla, Albertina, on a Fairyland minifee body. (Her original body went to Withdoll Cynthia.)

    45. Great picture. This thread has been too quiet.

I've been trying to get good pictures of all my dolls. I just took one of Heloise (my Rachel Vampire in rosy white). She now has her heeled feet on, so she's a bit taller with heels - but her dress is still slightly too long for her.

I've put all my dolls on stands now, to stop them falling over and creating a domino effect of fallen dolls in my display cabinet...

I've already had a broken finger and a broken elf ear this year, so I had to do something to keep them all up straight.

She's almost done. I do think she needs a better face-up, but I am sort of concentrating on getting my whole crew dressed - once I have no more bald and/or nude dolls I can start redoing face-ups.

      .

    46. @Fairy Milliner If you just pay the shipping fee, you can get your fingers serviced for free. K-packet shipping costs are low.

The length of the dress is nice and okay. ^^
