WITHdoll Mini Discussion Part 8

Apr 8, 2016

    1. @fansea that is the question. I think you can either get a WD body, or a new head, the latter being cheaper. I have this skin tones comparison in case it helps. Take in mind that "white" is paper white.

    2. Well that is thoroughly disheartening to hear about Souldoll's inconsistencies. :( Thank you so much for the information, @Yenna! I'm glad that I found out before going through with my hybrid (I would've been purchasing the head first, too ).

That would be wonderful! I've been looking at the Impldoll bodies but I'm not sold on them yet. Seeing a Withdoll/Impl hybrid would help out a lot.

Oh, okay! So the UV resins are an entirely different type of resin. That explains why the color looks slightly different from the non-UV versions in all of the comparison photos that I've seen. Thank you so much for the information!:3nodding:
And you are most welcome!

    3. @SaelaVe yes that is how it works! I remember one event where Withdoll added extra UV cut to all their resins, and even the urethanes one had a (UV) on the name, but it was only for that event only.
      Happy to help! :D

    4. @Musume ah thank you so much for the comparison! I decided to stick with her current head. Tbh, it's mainly her faceup that makes the color match so terrible. I was looking at her head cap to body comparison and it's just a few shades darker than the body. They both share the same pink undertone so it's not that noticeable under most lights. I think lighter blushing on the face plus a bit of body blushing would make it perfect! So the hybrid still works! It's about a 80% match? Hopefully I'll get photos soon!

    5. Hi everyone, I am not very familiar with WD, does anyone have a clue when the next event will be? (In which hopefully they'll offer tan/brown skin again)? Thanks! :)

P.s. Reading all your comments on resin match was quite useful as I was also considering the pretty WD body for a hybrid... But that will wait for now!

    6. Possibly in the summer. They tend to have some kind of an event in june-july-august, but it's not a given.

@Musume, I don't know. I cross referenced some images of sandy brown and I don't think it's a match to Real UV, but I can't confirm in person right now. The darker Souldoll tan hasn't been available in quite a while and the new one is so new that I haven't ever seen it in person, nor good comparison photos. So, I don't know about those.

    7. Oh goodness, we've already got a new thread and everything. :sweat I should find time to visit DoA more often....

      Here are some replies addressed to the previous thread. xD;;;;

@NekoNyanMew You're very welcome! ^^ And thank you~ I tend to photograph in natural light 90% of the time, I've never really learned to work well with artificial light. :'3 In my current apartment I have really big windows, so it's pretty bright in here, especially during summer. It helps a lot with photography. <3

@Musume Thank you for the kind words about Mi Cha! :D ... and now I can add to the conversation in this thread: I've got a Vito guy from Souldoll in Sandy Brown, so I can compare him to the Withdoll resin samples when I'm able to go visit Yenna. I remember that when we did a tan resin comparison earlier, Withdoll's Brown Tan UV was similar in shade and darkness to my Bambicrony Tan skin, but Souldoll's Sandy Brown is definitely lighter in comparison to Bambicrony. But I don't think that Souldoll's Sandy Brown will be a match to Withdoll's Real skin UV either, as Sandy Brown is a bit darker and more red in tone. But we'll take a comparison photo when we get together again, for sure. :)

      • x 1
    8. I have a sandy brown girl and a Real UV, and they do not match at all. Sandy brown is a light, warm tan while R.UV is a fairly pale, more grey-ish tan. R.UV is a better match with Souldoll's Milk chocolate skin, but I don't think it's a perfect match either given withdoll's UV skin is a slight bit transparent. I can take my R.UV girl out of her packaging and do a resin match if there is anyone who'd like to see it on photo. :]

    9. @SaelaVe Sorry, a few days late, but here's the picture of the Withdoll Mai head on the Impldoll Young body:

So, not much help in terms of resin match obviously, but that's how the proportions look - with the Mai head anyway, but bear in mind some of the older male heads are larger, apparently. The Young body is the larger of Impldoll's two MSD bodies, they also have the Child body, but it's very slim. Oh, and this is a colour match body to my Narae head, not their normal tan.

It's a nice solid body too, stands like a rock!

Anyway, hope that helps anyone thinking of a hybrid!

      • x 2
    10. @morganatron Thank you so much! Those proportions look really nice. That is definitely a body to consider for a hybrid.

Is the Aiden sculpt one of the newer heads, or older? (I have no idea when it was introduced or where the dividing line lies between old and new.)

    11. @Mizya, that makes sense. My current apartment has the worst natural light ever, but we've got to move soon because our landlord wants to raise the rent by 26%. :vein I'm going to make sure to look for a new place with a lot of natural light for doll photography.

    12. While I'm not a Withdoll owner yet, I just wanted to say I sent them an email asking if they had any plans to re-release Egon in human form (much like they did with Ash and their 1/3 Vera). Withdoll told me they would def' consider it. :dance So I shall continue stalking their releases like a madman.

And a quick question----does anyone happen to own a DreamingDoll Little Elva and a Withdoll mini? Would love to see how they look next to each other.

    13. I had asked Withdoll about their next event for special resin colors--I was looking forward to getting the Brown Tan UV body for my floating head--but it sounds like it might not happen this summer like last year's event. At least in their reponse to my Q&A post:
"Thank you for your interest in our doll.
Sadly, we don't have any plan for the special skin yet.
We are sorry that we cannot help you.
      Have a nice weekend.
      Sincerely,
      Withdoll"

I'm hoping they change their minds but maybe I'll start looking for hybrid options too. At this point I'm not too worried about the tan shades being mismatched if he'll be wearing a jumpsuit that covers 90% of his body. :XD: I'm mostly hoping proportions will work especially around his neck and shoulder width.

    14. Hello all! I have not been too active lately, but finally I have some updates to share!

Zivix got a new wig in yesterday, so I was motivated to take a few shots~

Zivix is my Mai in Brown Tan. His hair is now one tone instead of two. ^^~

    15. Hi everyone! It's been a long time since I was on the forum, but I was looking at my Eliza the other day and was thinking about Withdoll...so here I am! I saw that they are doing a "Nomad" doll that caught a lot of flak for being a "gypsy" doll first- Did anyone order that doll? I'm curious as to what she looks like in person.

    16. @Mazokugirl451 I think her blank face has a lot of potential, being more of a grumpy character in my opinion. Too bad I am a strictly MSD collector. XD I am excited to see what people do with her as well.

    17. Don't you hate it when that happens? You know she's there, but you can't get your hands on her. Congrats anyway! You'll have her soon.

I was home for my delivery yesterday. Emma is here! She is my first Withdoll and I am seriously in love with her sweet face. Here she is:
I posted a different shot on the Waiting Room thread. I'm not going to agonize over choosing a name for her. Emma suits her perfectly. I did replace the eyes she came with. The dark green Glib acrylics were just too dark, so she is wearing a medium gray glass instead. Sorry, don't remember what brand they are.

    18. Oh she's so lovely, @vermont chick !! How do you like her body? Does it pose well?

Rosa will be my first Withdoll, too :D I'm super excited to get her tomorrow!

    19. Her body poses quite well. She sits firmly without toppling. Her elbows are great! She can put her hands on her face or in her hair. Her legs are not quite as mobile. I couldn't get her to kneel. I almost had her standing on one leg but I couldn't quite get her to balance wearing shoes. I didn't try barefoot. Speaking of shoes, the ones made for the former Goodreau BJDs fit perfectly. They might show up on the secondary market. The Dollinstyle shoes that I bought for my MiniFees also fit. Her body measurements are the same as Narae's, so if you sew, patterns designed for Narae will fit.

    20. @AjiAji handsome boy! He looks great!!

@wherethelilacsbloom ooh! Postal officers are terrible, hope you can rescue her today!

@Mazokugirl451 Lala is SD sized, so she can't be discussed here.

@vermont chick your Emma is gorgeous!!! I saw your blog post, but I wanted to congratulate you here, too!
You can always re-string her with thicker strings, and that would do wonders for her posing.

    21. Thanks @Musume! I think I'll wait until later to restring her. I don't really require my dolls to kneel or to stand on one foot--it was just a test I attempted out of curiosity.:) If/when I need a kneeling doll in a photo, I simply use one that can do it. There aren't many that can.

    22. @Mazokugirl451 If you're interested in Lala, you should join the SWD thread: Withdoll 60cm discussion
We could definitely use more participants, since it's pretty quiet there. :3

@vermont chick Congratulations on your Emma. She's lovely! ( One of my favorite sculpts from WD c: )

I was testing a new prop I made for my dolls (the swing) and Min Ki turned it into a whole shoot, haha:

I really love how effortless the boy body is to pose. I find the extra pieces above the thigh to be a godsent with legs that are strung together -and they'd be helpful even without that. They work really well even with the doll wearing pants, unlike most thigh-joints.
I'm hoping Withdoll will be renewing the junior girl body next... I've been waiting a long time to be able to get a body for my vampire Rachel head. xD

    23. Emma thanks you, @Yenna. (So do I.) The swing makes a great prop! Did you use a very long rope or a very low branch?

I also appreciate the posing assessment of the boy body, especially as Egon the Elf Knight is back. I missed him the last time he was available for sale--I won't make that mistake again!:)

    24. @vermont chick I'd say a medium branch... Our cherry tree is quite well in scale for dolls and the lowest branches are probably at around 80-90cm height. I had cut the rope much longer -in case it was needed, so there was a lot of extra to wrap around the branches. If you want to see more posing and assessment for the boy body, you should check out this blog post: LoveWithdoll That body is definitely worth getting. Even I love it although I usually really hate handling dolls with legs strung separate from the torso. xD

    25. @Yenna
      I had asked Withdoll the other day about getting a new junior girl body. I am actually a bit bummed they said that they were going to do a Male Senior first... I really love their female sculpts, but I prefer double jointed knees. ;;

      @Musume Thank you very much~

    26. @Yenna Thanks for the link to the LoveWithdoll blog! With a few exceptions (like the head) the boy body seems to have good mobility. I do wish the knee and elbow joints were more rounded. The sharp edges revealed when the joints flex look very strange, especially under pants. The most natural looking joints I've seen belong to the Luts Model Delf. I'd like to see more doll bodies go in that direction.

By the way, I have placed my order for Egon, but without the clothes and armor because my doll funds are depleted. Looks like I'll be sewing his outfit myself.

    27. Oh, well I'm not too surprised, seeing how well SD sized boys sell in this hobby. Not good news for those of us who are waiting for a new junior girl body, though, because that will be probably pushed back another year or two.

The Fenrir head in those photos isn't made for the body as it originally came out with the previous male body that is no longer sold. The newer heads (like my Taren) pose much better on the new body. The jointing is within Withdoll's style. I guess, they prefer to make the nuggets inside the pieces so that they're hidden when the joints aren't bent. I don't love them myself, but they do work wonderfully even with clothes on, so I can't complain that much. I've had the displeasure of working with a lot of bodies that are hard to use with clothes on, so I'm very happy with this particular one. I only wish the insides were wider to allow thicker strings without putting too much strain on the joints.

    28. That's good news, @Yenna. I played around with posing Emma and wondered how the boy head could have so little mobility while the girl head has such a good range of motion.

Do you (or does anyone) know if WithDoll has any connection with FairyLand? Like maybe a former FairyLand sculptor on their staff? The reason I ask is that the basic girl hands are almost identical to the MiniFee girl hands. Also the hands and feet connect in exactly the same way. In fact, I was drawn to Emma by her resemblance to MiniFee Liria. It's curious.

    29. I rescued my Rosa yesterday but was unable to get any real photos until today! Boo at rushed box openings! I didn't take any photos of it :(

That being said, I really do love my Rosa. <3 She's so pretty! Though I do think I'll prefer her with larger eyes. I really struggled to position these 10mms, and they still don't look quite right.

    30. @Yenna

Yeah. I agree. I have a strictly MSD collection, and bodies mean a lot to me. ;; But I understand what is good for business is a good for a doll company to do. I would rather wait for a new body than have Withdoll lose business.

      @wherethelilacsbloom

Ooh! Your Rosa is so adorable! Congratulations!

    31. @vermont chick, I don't think so? I've seen what the girl hands originally looked like (they were huge and different shape) and they've gone through two mechanisms to get to this lock system. I didn't know Fairylands had added locks to their wrists, though, since it's been a long time since I sold my mnf body. Of course it's a possibility, but the jointing doesn't resemble Fairyland's otherwise at all, and Withdolls have completely different facial proportions too. Fairyland faces are wide and heads are ball shaped, while Withdoll faces are tall and the heads more oval shaped widening towards the top. The only thing I've heard about their background is that they used to make gundam figures (etc.) before moving onto dolls, thus they had a lot of problems at first adapting their style of doing things into properly working dolls. But it's also why a new company was able to put out super amazing quality armours in dark resin.

@wherethelilacsbloom, Congratulations. :3 I find that most open-eyed WD girls wear 12mm eyes the best, but of course that depends on the eye company as well... The width of the eye is also made for 12mm and smaller eyes tend to gap. I hope you find eyes for her that you're happy with, she's a cutie. ^^ I do love how the wig matches the eyebrows.

@AjiAji Yeah, I've been waiting for years already, so what's a few more years of waiting to me? I enjoy looking at what Withdoll releases in the mean time.

    32. I discovered something scary happening to my Withdoll Cathy's knees yesterday. There are hairline cracks forming around her knee caps. I plan to take her apart and place some epoxy putty inside the knees to stabilize it but this worries me since I received her last October with similar cracks on one of her ankles. The tension on her strining always seemed fine to me since I have tighter strung dolls but now I'm so unsure. First no body for my boy and now this on my girl (again)--arghhhh!

    33. @wherethelilacsbloom Your Rosa is gorgeous! I love how she looks in the red wig. Big congratulations on her arrival! I think the 10mm eyes work well, but if you want to go larger 12mm is the way to go. I have 12mm in Emma. They look big in the photo I posted on this thread. The one I posted in the Waiting Room is a better view.

@Yenna I was talking only about the hands and feet, not any other parts of the doll. Those are vastly different. FairyLand does use a locking mechanism for the hands, but only on the larger dolls. It hasn't come down to MiniFee yet.

@Anante Those cracks are scary! Could there be a weakness in the resin there? It might just affect one specific batch of resin. I would sent the photos to WithDoll if I were you. They should replace those parts.

    34. Thank you all for the congrats :D Emma is sitting at my desk with me today while we figure out her eye situation :)

I do have one more pair of 12mm eyes, but they are brown. While this normally wouldn't bother me, I was really counting on her having green. All of my girls are basically brown or blue in eye color, so I wanted to introduce a little variety ;)

I am thinking of adding a pair or two of Salafina eyes onto my next Clover Singing order. Has anyone tried these? They seem really pretty.

I do want urethane eventually, but I wanted to wait until I can afford to order several pairs at once, rather than one at a time. New resin keeps distracting me from getting more wig/eyes/clothing options for my current resin xD Oy.

    35. That is a really neat piece of trivia to know! :D I used to collect miniature gundam figures when I was about middleschool aged. It really does make sense, though! Even though I don't own any of the armor sets, they look incredibly detailed and the owner photos I've seen show they fit amazingly well!

    36. @Anante
Oh no! ;A; What a sad thing to be happening! Hope the fix works out for you, and it won't be so bad. @_@

    37. After looking through my accounts, I found I had a bit more money than I thought. I just ordered Egon (blank basic). I'll be dying him when he arrives so he can be my super grumpy dark elf. :)

    38. Congrats on your Egon!!! I hope you will share photos of him once he arrives (and after you dye him, because a grumpy dark elf sounds AWESOME). :D

    39. @vermont chick you are welcome!

@Yenna Min Ki is looking great as always!

@wherethelilacsbloom she is so pretty, congrats!!! I love that necklace/choker you did for her!
I think her eyes look great, imho they are the perfect size for her. And green really suits her!
You could try AllThatGlittersEyes on Etsy. Their sales photos are not that good, but the owner pics I've seen are great!

@Anante ohh, I'm so sorry this happened to you!
Maybe you should contact Withdoll to see if they would sell you replacement parts.

      @LuckyXIII Congrats on ordering!!

    40. @wherethelilacsbloom
I know with our Emma's that we have, we had to gentle carve the eye wells bigger to fit the eyes we put in Yuki.
      She has 12mm.

    41. @vermont chick, your Emma is gorgeous! Se has really sweet face. Emma is my favorite sculpt.

@wherethelilacsbloom, your Rosa is so pretty! Congrats! And she has a lovely outfit.

@LuckyXIII, congrats on your order! That grumpy dark elf sounds great! Canยดt wait to see him. ^^

@AjiAji, she is just lovely! Those bright eyes looks awesome on her.

Here is another Emma! And really hope that I havenยดt posted this before because it is not a new picture... :D And I promise to take a new one soon.

But she wears also 12 mm eyes.

    42. @AjiAji Your Emma is a lovely color. Which resin is it? It reminds me of Iple's peach gold.

@Wheatear Do I spy elf ears on your Emma? OMG, if WD ever offers an elf version again, I need to buy her! Love her wig.

    43. @Wheatear Thank you very much! Your Emma is also very lovely~ I am always tempted by Elf Emma's when I see them go up for sale. ;A; Those ears man, gorgeous!

@vermont chick She in in the Real UV skin tone. I love how soft and gentle it is. Just a nice sun kissed without being orange like a lot of other tan dolls. <3 (I mean, she does have a red tone to her, but not ORANGE. Looks like a real person who goes outside often.)

@Yenna Might I bother you for the head measurements of your Taren? I know WD says they are 18.5cm, but that I think is the original first head sizes, which were much bigger than the current ones.

My Mai is 17.5cm, Aiden is 17cm and so is Emma and Rosa. So I am just curious were Taren ranks. XD (I am debating getting a Taren, but am nervous because he is an older sculpt his head may be a bit bigger, so not as proportional with our other heads.) Thank you!

    44. Indeed, those are the measurements for the first boy heads. I can't measure him right now, but he's not technically an older head. He's the first one in the shift to the smaller size and wears a 6-7" wig like the rest of the new boy heads. I'm pretty sure it's in the 17cm side. In comparisons to girl heads, his head is slightly bigger than most of them, but his face is actually smaller than some (for example Priscilla). There's some comparisons here.

By the way, I really like how different your Emma is from most. :3

    45. @vermont chick, thank you! Yes, she is Elf Hunter version of Emma. I really hope that they would offer those elf girls again. I have been dreaming of buying an elf Ruby as a friend for her. ^^

@AjiAji, thank you! Emma is just amazing sculpt. I love those ears too.

    46. @Yenna Thank you very much! I would definitely say that he is probably a 17cm too. Their "smaller boys" and "larger girls" seem to be pretty consistently 17cm from the ones we have. Your comparisons also really help.

@Wheatear When we first got her, the doll she had been meant for did not work (we first got Emma in a white skin for the same character, Yuki, but decided a darker tone would work better.). But we both agreed, my fiance and I, that there would be no way we could get rid of that sculpt. XD So now we have two Emma's, the White skin and the real skin. Both are equally gorgeous and I am very happy with the sculpt.

    47. -stumbles in because I always sit in Waiting Rooms and then forget to actually go into the Discussion Rooms after I actually get me dolls-

Hello, I am AjiAji's fiance XD

I am currently in the middle of restringing and hot glue sueding my WS Emma, and my BTUV Egon is currently in borrowed clothes and it has been too wet from rain to go outside and get any good shots of him. So I guess I will just post a pic of my RUV Emma, Yuki, whom I see Aji has already introduced you all to XD

    48. @Wheatear, what a beautiful girl! :D

Is anyone else tempted by the Egon re-release? I would love an Egon, but I just bought two dolls and can't afford him. Hopefully he starts showing up on the MP soon. *crosses fingers*

    49. I ordered Egon. Unless I'm mistaken, mine is still the only one from the re-release listed in the Waiting Room. I'm about to start sewing for him, even though he won't appear for a few months yet.

    50. @vermont chick Oooh~! Congratulations! What type of skin tone did you get yours in?

    51. @AjiAji she is so beautiful!
Did you sand the inner part of the eyewells?

@Wheatear what a gorgeous girl!! Love the corset and necklace she has!

@Alia hi there! Belated welcome to the thread :D
You girl is gorgeous, can't wait to see the rest of the crew!

@vermont chick congrats!!!! Nice to read you were able to grab him! :D

    52. @Musume

@Alaia did some gentle carving with an exact-o knife. ouo We found out when we got our White skinned Emma that larger domed eyes just would not fit, but the perfect orange-y eyes we have in her were just too perfect, so we fixed her wells. I think it works a lot better too, so the eye sits just perfect now.

    53. @NekoNyanMew
I have a brown tan uv Egon from the first release and I was actually pondering last night at work on if he needed a twin XD Probably will not, though it would be gorgeous.

      @Musume
      Thank you!

And as for the carving of Emma's eye wells, like Aji said I just used an exacto knife to shave off a little bit around the eye wells until the glass eyes we had would fit. I did not do any sanding after because it was still fairly smooth after I was finished.

12mm acrylics withdoll sent as default eyes worked just great because they have some give to them and so could squeeze into the eye well perfectly. But since glass has no give at all I had to make a little bit of room so that they could reach the eye holes better. I had to do the same thing with my other Emma and with @AjiAji 's Aiden but it is a really quick and easy thing to do, so it wasn't a bother. ^^

    54. You just reminded me I forgot to add mine to the list. I'm getting one as well. :) I don't have a WD boy yet so I can't start sewing for mine yet. He'll be in form fitting clothes so I need to have him here. Though now that I think about it, I did get a couple of those basic long sleeved shirts from WD so i can use those as a pattern for his tops. I'll have to try that out sometime. Might be awhile before I get to that though!

    55. I'm sorry for the double posting, but I wanted to share this photo of Coco :3
I really like how this dress turned out!

    56. Does anyone have photos of withdoll Ruby in real skin UV?

    57. Hi everybody! I'm new in this thread and I chimed in after I've started a layaway for a Withdoll Priscilla in grey skin.
I've always wanted a doll in that lovely color and I was so lucky that someone in my local community is selling her second hand :love
She's going to be my first "bigger" resin girl and I'm already so excited to get her - there's also a newly placed Mako eyes order for her

    58. You're going to have to post tons of pics of her! I have a rose white priscilla on order--can't wait! Do you have a name picked out?

    59. @AjiAji Thank you! <3 I'm sure I'll find the skin tone even lovelier when I see her in person.

@Alsatian oh I will take some pictures! But she won't come with a face up so she's going to a friend in my city soon after she arrived for a make over.
I'm not sure about a name at the moment, but I have a character already thought up ^^
Congrats to you for your Priscilla, rose white sounds very pretty~ does yours have a name?
