WITHdoll Mini Discussion Part 8

Apr 8, 2016

    1. I know on their main website you can purchase bodies separately! You could try contacting their customer service and asking if they'd be willing to sell you the head? Worst case scenario if they aren't able to sell you the female body with the Jiho head, you could do a split order with someone looking for the boy body.

      • x 1
    2. You can ask if they can change the body to a girl body. They did that for me when I ordered my cat butler Parker :)

      • x 1
    3. I say ask them! I personally feel that Withdoll has the best customer service I've ever encountered. I would be very surprised if they said no to selling you the head on a girl body.

      • x 1
    4. Oh amazing, thank you so much! Thatโ€™s really encouraging to hear, I will def reach out to them and ask :D

    5. Finally Angela has become the warrior :3nodding:

    6. Does someone own a Withdoll Ash? I'm thinking about getting one but would like to see owner pics here first
I'm thinking about getting him in Brown Tan, like the company pics but seeing him in other skin tones would also be great! (I saw the resin color comparison on the page before but I'm still having issues imaging it)

And would you recommend getting a company faceup or commissioning it after I get him (if I get him)? So, how good are their company faceups?

(if someone also has a Tan fairyland doll for a comparison that would also be awesome because that is the only tan BJD I have for now and I don't know how Withdoll's tan looks like)

    7. I've found the company face ups to be good and match the promo pictures. I've been very happy with the one's i've received so would say if you really like the company face up then go for it ;)

    8. I have 2 Withdolls - Egon and Ruby - with the company face ups and I like them both! But I also liked their promo photos which is why I am happy with them!

    9. Also a happy customer with their face-ups. I have a Priscilla (grey skin) and Ruby. (elf version, brown tan skin) :blush

Sadly, they're still in their boxes until I can reorganize my doll shelves.

    10. So I ended up contacting customer service, and unfortunately they said the Jiho head isnโ€™t compatible with the female body :( Iโ€™m a little heartbroken but honestly considering just buying him anyway - he would be my first boy, LOL!

does anyone have any photos of their boy JWDs? Iโ€™m curious of the like, proportions in comparison to other dolls.

    11. That's unfortunate, probably the neck hole is the wrong size for the girl body then and it affects the posing as well, so they don't want to sell a doll that doesn't work as it should.
I've got two comparisons that have the JWD boy:
Mini dolls comparison โ€“ Blogged Dimensions
Withdoll vs Souldoll males (mini sizes) โ€“ Blogged Dimensions

Other than that I've mostly just taken photos of him with his girlfriend who is a Withdoll Cathy on an old supia body. Can also find those in the blog with the "min ki" tag.

    12. That's a shame but at least it saved you from the hassle and expense of trying to buy two dolls & doing a head swap and finding it doesn't work. I don't know if you had planned to get boy dolls but it's funny how unexpected dolls find their way in to peoples collection

    13. @d0llb0nes Awww at least they answered! I started off with boys and now girls have worked their way in! Now I tend to make sure I have the same amount of boy and girl!

    14. Oh my gosh, this is super super helpful! Thank you SO much for linking these posts - this is an amazing resource. I'm going to be doing some mental calculus in my head I think to see how I can make this boy work aha.

YES haha I am just glad they answered.. I honestly had never planned to get a boy but he may be my one exception... we will see, I'm not letting myself buy any more dolls until I move this summer but he really calls to me LOL

Oh man that's so interesting! I just have never been into boy dolls tbh, but I find in many ways the boy head sculpts can be way more varied than girl ones.. so I may end up being half and half like you.

    15. Cross pollinating to see if I can get anyone else's Real resin colour experience from ordering in the last few years.
      /threads/tan-skin-worries.730802/page-3

I have some Withdolls in different sizes all ordered and arrived at the same time that are significantly yellowed/heading to greening after only a year old and am wanting other collectors input.

      • x 1
    16. I can't speak for Withdoll's real skin specifically, but I do have several Withdolls and have been in the hobby a long time (17 years), so I know fair amount about yellowing in general. And I'm actually very interested in how dolls yellow because it varies a lot depending on the color of the doll. In my experience dolls do a first stage of yellowing within the first year or so of owning them (it can be almost unnoticeable or very obvious, depending on the skin tone), then if there are no outside factors accelerating this, it'll stabilize for a while. Then, after a few more years it starts yellowing again but more strongly this time. Like my grey Withdoll girl slowly got paler in the first 5-6 years of owning her but in the 7th year I noticed that she had started yellowing/greening noticeably and now that she's 11 it's still very obvious but she is still grey -just kind of yellow tinted in certain light. On the other hand, my rosy brown girl is now 10 years old and she's not at the stage of showing yellow tint yet but I do think the red/purpley tone has long since faded out. The rosy brown is a very heavily tinted color so that's probably what's keeping it very nice for such a long time.

The UV resin is indeed a different type of resin. People used to call it French resin in the hobby and it was super prone to yellowing in the old days. Many companies use this type of resin now and they might call it glow resin, honey resin, imported resin etc. but it's essentially the same thing (though different brands vary of course). It's characterised by being slightly translucent, which you mostly notice in the thin parts like nose, ears, fingers, toes etc. We have a comparison post of this in our WD blog and the last photo in this post. Withdoll included UV protection in this resin type and it was labeled as such because this resin desperately needed it. The non-UV urethane resins didn't include the protection at first because they really don't need it as much. However, your new dolls do include it. But again, it's UV protection: it protects the doll from UV rays, not natural yellowing that comes with age.

Now, all that said. Keeping dolls away from direct sunlight and strong natural light is generally what people say you should do to avoid accelerated yellowing. But a lot of people don't mention (or they don't know) that strong fluorescent lights also have the same effect as sunlight. And I'm not sure if UV protection can protect resin from that. I didn't know this either, but noticed it as myself and a few other local collectors had our dolls in a museum for a display for a few weeks some years ago. They weren't in direct sunlight, though one of the displays did have a big window close by but it didn't let in much more light than my bedroom windows did at home. However, the displays did have some kind of fluorescent lights and when I got my dolls back I noticed that they had yellowed considerably during the time they were on display (I think it was about 6 weeks). It wasn't light damage, as they'd yellowed evenly even under the clothes, but more of the combination of the light and the temperature, I guess.
At home I have my dolls on display as well but the only light they get is indirect daylight from regular windows, and they don't yellow at that rate. In fact the only yellowing due to light damage I have noticed at home is that doll's other urethane eye had turned yellow (was pale green) while the other hadn't because his hair had been covering the other eye. He faces towards the window but doesn't get direct sunlight. From this I've concluded that fluorescent lights are much worse for dolls than daylight (as long as it's not direct sunlight). I've actually tried to yellow some of my doll parts deliberately to make them match an older doll, but have been fairly unsuccesful despite leaving the parts for weeeks on a patio that gets direct sunlight daily. The lights at the museum were much more efficient at yellowing than any sort of natural light is. (At least where I live where the UV index isn't very high even in summer.)

I'd say that you keeping your dolls out on the desk and under your work lights may have caused them to yellow faster than they would have otherwise. Also the color may just have the bad luck of having the kind of pigments that break down faster under such conditions, as the non-UV resin is a completely different type of resin from your older doll. But I also don't think they'll keep on yellowing at the same rate once they're no longer exposed to the light. Also, like I said in the beginning, dolls tend to do their first yellowing within a few months of having been made and then they stabilize for several years before they yellow strongly again. Of course, this is all just my own experiences in the climate I live in. But I really wouldn't worry that they keep getting green so fast. If they do, you could contact Withdoll and ask them if they think it's normal.

Hopefully someone with the same color dolls as you can give more insight to how they yellow normally.

    17. @Yenna thank you so much for the wonderful in depth reply. I knew you had Withdoll dolls and was hoping youโ€™d see this.

The fluorescents werenโ€™t direct lighting over the desk. Rather the long ones that can light a large space. We were in a sleep out style place, which was basically just a big rectangle with a kitchenette down one end.

I feel like they have continued yellowing in our new home as I had my JWD in jeans while in the previous space, and shorts in the new home.

Iโ€™m going to try take some thorough photos today and post them over the next few days to analyse.

    18. I am happy to join this thread as I just ordered a Withdoll Olivia in brown tan. So far I've heard very good things about Withdoll so I can't wait to receive my girl :). Olivia is such a pretty sculpt and I love her nose.
Does anyone here own a Olivia? I would be very interested in seeing owner pictures.

    20. I've always admired withdoll and I think I might want a withdoll Mai. I think he would make a nice Legend of Zelda Link with the right faceup and added elf ears. His body looks right as well and I think he comes with multiple hands which is great! Has anyone ordered from withdoll recently?

      • x 1
    21. Hello, Withdoll people.

My mom and I recently ordered two Withdolls, directly from Withdoll themselves, Priscilla and Cathy, both in normal skin with faceups. I have read great things about Withdoll for years, and have been very excited to finally get to own one. After only six weeks of waiting, we received a notice that they had shipped. Mind-blowingly fast, from what we were expecting to wait.

I will say, the heads and faceups are beautiful, but the overall quality of the dolls has left us very disappointed. They were both covered in resin dust (not good), which we quickly wiped off with a damp cloth. The resin itself feels very rough. The tight stringing in the legs can be easily fixed, but the arms and hands are very stiff when I try to move them, to the point where I am honestly afraid of breaking something. I love Withdollโ€™s products, and want to love this doll, but I am just left feeling like the quality is not worth the price I paid. I have other bjds, so I know how to handle them, and generally what to expect.

I was wondering if anyone else has had similar experiences? Is this normal quality for Withdoll, or has their quality gone down recently? Any advice (besides just selling them off)?

    22. I believe they recently had a large sale of re-release dolls and some discontinuations, so maybe they are rushing through the process as to not get backed up. Maybe try contacting them about the issues?

    23. I just got my JWD Olivia this week and I'm happy with her so far. But I might just lack the experience to note any quality issues. To me she feels as expected.

Only thing is I forgot to check her eye size beforehand and just assumed she'd take 14mm eyes like all of my other 1/4 dolls. Well that's definitely not the case. Withdoll recommends 12mm for a reason. But that's my own fault of course.

    24. @LofiOscar sorry to hear your first withdoll doll is a disappointment. The stiff arm might be too tight stringing? one of my doll arrived with very tight stringing to the point that I couldn't move it, felt like it was glued, I was so afraid to move it too. And for the roughness... I read somewhere in this forum that some companies has rougher resin, which some prefer and some don't. I have dolls from different companies too and never really take notice until I read that discussion. My doll legend and fairyland is more smooth compare to my withdoll.

Not to dismiss you at all, hopefully other owner especially whom get withdoll recently can comment on the resin.

    25. @LofiOscar I think it depends on the body type?
I have two Cathy from Withdoll (2018 old body, 2021 new body), and a KWD body on 2020 .The newer JWD body is a bit rougher than the old ones, and the KWD body resin is smooth.

    26. @Koma, @laquaza, @marxwyn, @Kim_shyuen
Thank you all for the replies. I am feeling much better about my doll after reading these. It seems that my lack of experience with Withdoll dolls, and tight stringing, may have led me to believe there was a quality issue when there was not.

I did not realize that some resin is smoother than others, depending on the company, but this actually makes a lot of sense.

I am already happier with my girl, and giving her another chance.

      I appreciate the input.

    27. It's actually not even always consistent for one company. I don't know about Withdoll but I have several Little Monica dolls and one of them has significantly more tooth to it. I was surprised at first too but she poses the same as the others so I don't mind.

But it's definitely a matter of preference.

I did compare my JWD Olivia to my other dolls after reading of your experience @LofiOscar . And she's definitely toothier than some of my other dolls but not all.

    28. I need this doll. Why is shipping to the usa so expensive shes on sale now 20% off crrryyyyy

    29. You could try a layaway, that way you can get her at the discounted price.

    30. I second what @Koma said. Put her on layaway - then you can divide the overall sum into more manageable payments.

    31. I did a small photoshoot with my Withdoll Jiho the other day! I don't get to see a lot of owner photos of his sculpt so I thought I would share with you guys :)

    34. Hey everyone! I'm popping in as i'm hoping to buy one of Withdoll's heads for a body i have. I'm wondering if anyone could show me the Beige skin some more. The body i have is a DF-H in their new "tan" which is very very light and i'm hoping the Beige will match. For reference here's the body in question:
It's just a bit more sandy looking in real life but if y'all think the beige resin is in the same ballpark i'll probably get it

    35. Here is my Withdoll Theo's body in beige next to my Luts Elf Raven... i'd have to check is coa but I think he was in "real skin normal"? If that helps any?

      comparison with Raven

I think beige might be a bit paler, though.

      photo with just Withdoll Theo

That tan is so pretty, though! I was thinking of getting the new doll family h girl body matched to switch milktea but I might just have to get their new tan. o: I've been thinking of getting that body for my Souldoll Aehael.

    36. @Epona thank you so much for that! I'm thinkin it *should* be close enough for a match based on those images. If i have to blush it a bit to make it perfect, that's fine too. I may just have to take the gamble and buy it.

It's a really nice color, honestly, but i'll forever be sad they stopped making the darker tan apparently. I hope it matches what you need though!

    37. Hey all! I haven't purchased a bjd for close to a decade, but I've got an idea for a Link Breath of the Wild doll that I can't stop thinking about. (I also haven't been active here in about as long, so sorry for any breach of etiquette.)

I'm considering snagging a light tan Ruby boy during the anniversary event for the project, but I'm not sure.

Does anyone have a Ruby with a more masculine or neutral faceup they could share? Or a 3/4 full shot of a boy doll standing, minimally dressed?[edit:] I'd like to see if they can stand with a wider stance
      Thanks!!

    38. @snootyface I have an Egon AND a Ruby - I can do a head swap and take pictures but it won't be until the weekend if you're okay with that?
They do have the company face ups but they are the same skin tone. I can take pics with a blonde wig if you like - though the color might not be perfect for Link.

    39. I am really tempted to get a second withdoll during the current event since I am very happy with my Cecily.

Does someone know if they adjust their face up for different skin colors? Like, they show the face up on a tan doll but you order her in sweet blue, will they make adjustments so it still fits, or just paint the exactly same face up with same intensity and colors? (I have heard dream valley does that, exactly same face up on all skin colors)

I find their face ups great and would be sad to order "the wrong skin color" for it, in case they do not adjust

    40. @Pyoko You could ask them! They are very quick to respond!

    41. I have considered that, but was unsure how their English might be. Do they have good English support?

    42. @Pyoko Yes, I remember it being pretty good! But I did last order from them a few years ago - pre-COVID.

    43. I got my Jiho in 'real skin' (he's pictured in beige), and his face-up (particularly his brows) is slightly darker than what's pictured to better match his skin tone. Also worth noting, I genuinely feel like the face-up I got is better than what's pictured, they pay great attention to detail!

    45. @snootyface good luck making link! Lol I decided I wanted to do the same thing a year ago and I bought a second hand Elf Egon. I wound up swapping the head for a DSdoll Ghost but i really like the withdoll body since it is muscular without being bulky.

Excited to see how yours turns out!

    47. I just put in an order for Elf Ruby (my first proper bjd!!) and never got a confirmation email. My order status says my payment was confirmed and everything, so I assume I shouldn't be worried? Right? :shudder

I'm not usually this neurotic about such things, but this is a huge purchase for me and I'm a little jittery, haha.

      • x 2
    48. If it makes you feel any better, I never got a confirmation number either! Also didn't get a notification about him being shipped out/tracking wasn't really kept up to date. Was surprised when he arrived at my front door, lol.

      • x 1
    49. That does help, haha! I expect that I'll be nervy for however long she takes to make it to me, but I appreciate knowing it's not a cause for concern. Thank you!

    50. Thank you!! Much appreciated. I'd love seeing with the blonde wig too if you don't mind! The finished head proportion is hard to imagine.

      • x 1
    51. @snootyface Are you looking for short/long? I currently have them redressed so if you don't mind clothes in the pic, I can take another this weekend probably.

    52. If you are concerned, I would ask them on their Q and A board, just to double check that the order went through, and payment was confirmed. :) (It is much easier to get a response that way then by email.) I was very anxious with my first purchase from them, and that was what I did when I didn't receive an email. They usually respond quickly, and have always been friendly and helpful.

    53. I can certainly vouch for Withdoll. The first time I ordered from them was in 2010 and they've always been very friendly and prompt in their communication, and the dolls are great quality. :D

I think the last time when I ordered from them a few years ago their website still sent out order confirmation and shipping emails, but now that I ordered the limited edition Olivia, I got neither. Luckily our country's postal service has a handy app that tells me when packages are arriving, otherwise I would've been surprised to get a notice from the customs office saying my doll is in the country and I need to pay up, haha. xD

I didn't actually get her the limited face up or outfit (although the outfit did tempt me, but I opted to get a new body for my BWD Lucy instead) so I might just as well have gotten a basic edition Olivia... but only the limited edition's styling made me realise that the sculpt would work for a certain character of mine who I've been planning to reshell for a few years now (she used to be Dream of Doll Twing-key, who was my second BJD in 2005). I did get the wig, though, and while I plan my girl to have dark brown hair, in the past I enjoyed switching light/pastel coloured wigs on her occasionally. The wig that Olivia had in the photos just looked so lovely and fluffy that I couldn't resist... :D Only now I realise that I should've been shopping for eyes for her, too, since her previous incarnation had a much bigger eye size so I won't be able to use those. :'D But well, she can probably borrow a pair from my other dolls until I get her eyes of her own.

    54. I need to decide on a tan color for my 1/4 Ruby that I want to order.
The pictures on their website are in "brown tan" , but than again her skin looks so much lighter than the color-examples on the bottom of the page; more like the "honey brown" ?
      Ruby link
      I am confused :huh?:

I did actually ask withdoll to confirm, and yes the pictures are "brown tan" they said. It makes me wonder if 2023 colors are so different?
I love how the "honey brown" in the example looks, but if that's much lighter than the tan in the pictures, than that's not what I am looking for >_<

    55. I have a Olivia in brown tan. Let me know if you want to see comparison pictures.

    56. The new colors are not that different -many of them are the same as they were before. The dolls, when by themselves, are just shot with very bright lighting and the photos are edited. The comparison chart shows you how the colors compare to eachother and it's much more accurate in how the doll will actually look -though even in that case the lighting will play a part. In Rubys photos the most accurate skin tone is in the blank and face up photo that's in studio lighting without much editing, but even that, imo, looks a bit pale. Brown tan is definitely a fairly dark color. When deciding the skin tone the comparison with all the colors is the best reference you could have.
Doll shot by themselves and edited will look different in tone depending on not just camera settings and lighting but also what they're wearing etc. Color theory and all.

    57. That would be great

    58. Good to know. I agree that even the head picture looks lighter than the color-example. I always have such a hard time with color choosing just by those company examples. The fact how different they can photograph doesn't make it easier :sweat

    59. I have to disagree on the comparison being the best picture. As in generally it's true if it were a single photograph that showed all of them together. (If they are 'real' photograpgs at all and not just colored 3D renders.) But I believe the pictures for the color chart have all been shot individually which makes it less reliable.

I really like these pictures as reference for Withdoll's resin colors though. Here the different colors have actually been photographed together. It's not their updated 2023 colors though.

I own quite a few brown dolls and personally I find owner pics to be a lot more helpful for determining the actual color. Especially owner pictures that show different resin tones next to each other. I have gotten very careful about trusting the official color samples of the companies. Usually the colors are lighter and a lot less more red in real life.
But that's only my experience of course.
