What's your ultimate dream costume for your bjd?

Jan 25, 2018

    1. My one dream outfit would be for my SD girl. I’d like a blue oiran outfit complete with hair accessories. There are plenty of kimonos I’ve found but none with the complexity and style of an oiran kimono.

    2. I want a wedding kimono that is extremely detailed!
That is actually made out of kimono fabrics instead of cheap cottons

      Details details details.
Recently I'm extra annoyed by cheap quality looking clothes!

How could you spent hundreds or thousands on a doll to give them a bad Faceup and cheap quality clothes? There may be budget constraints but I'm sure most are willing to do layway/save up!

    3. I need to get/make a screen accurate costume for Orsino. All my dolls have ultimate dream costumes though, but his is the one I plan to finish first. Falhen needs a Dalish hunter getup with all the crazy crisscrossed leather bits. That'll be a hair ripper for sure. Julian will need his in game get up, mostly focusing on his ridiculously tall boots, double breasted jacket and huge black over coat. And finally Logan will need his purple King's regalia replete with a metal breastplate and a crown. Ideally I want to use lost wax casting to make a crown to fit him in bronze or brass. I can easily carve the wax I just don't have the tools or equipment to do the casting.

    4. @usadapyo You might be interested in Xiamaowang, then! They make some incredibly detailed, intricate oiran kimonos out of beautiful fabric. I don't own any of their kimonos (yet...) but I do own some of their hair accessories and I love the quality.

As for me, I dream about styling a doll as a knight in shining armor, preferably like an impractical fantasy paladin rather than anything historical lol. Not sure if this counts as a costume though, since ideally I'd like the armor to be painted resin parts.

    5. My 70cm dolls all have very specific outfits that will be pricey for me to recreate. For Fia, my 70cm woman, she's from a dieselpunk version of the 1940s and needs a proper hat, suit and holster for her period-appropriate gun. I've had to dress her in men's clothing to get the right look, with minor tweaks. For my 70cm cyberpunk assassin, he basically needs LEDs and embedded technology in all his clothes, which would require me to build things from scratch that I don't know how to do. My current fantasy-dream doll is an Impldoll Tony in a custom space admiral's dress uniform (along with his working uniform, but the dressage is prettier) complete with his weapons and gear. Cyberpunk stuff is hard to do and find!

    6. I’m super interested! Googling Xiamaowang gives me zero results though, where are they sold?

    7. I would love a Victorian outfit for my littlefee

    8. Sorry, I spelled it wrong, it's Xiaomaowang. :sweat You can find them on Legenddoll.

    9. Far too many historical period styles to list - starting in the late 14th Century and coming forward from there (skipping the late 17th Century when men were in pettiocoat-britches and women were in mantua, both of which styles I find particularly ugly).

I could fill an entire thread just with links to pictures, frescoes, and portraits depicting costumes I'd want for my boys and girls.

But I'd want them accurate and with in-scale fabrics, patterns etc. plus the proper accessories - shoes hats underwear etc.

    10. Full historical dress with embroidery and all accessories in ideal scale. ^_^

      • x 1
    11. A Game of Thrones inspired dress. Preferably one like Margaery has :loveHer style is everything

    12. I do not currently have any real goals for bjd clothing other than to-scale fasteners like buttons, buckles, and zippers. The only things I've found are basic 2 and 4 hole buttons and maybe tiny buckles at Michaels but I want more :...(

    13. Jeffree Star cosplay.

    14. Custom suits for my boys. Historical costumes for all of them. Medieval, 16th century, 17th century, 18th century, Edwardian, Victorian, 20s, other stuff I've probably missed.

    15. I really like good 3 piece suits. So I want my larger, more mature looking boys in well fitting suits.

    16. Okay, so I've always really wanted to make school uniforms for all my dolls. It's not so much that it's difficult to do, it's just deciding on the details. And since I plan for ALL my dolls to go to the same school, I would have to use fabric that I knew I could buy again and again, so I can keep making the same uniform for every new doll I get.
But I've got to admit the main reason I haven't done any of this yet is because none of my dolls own school appropriate shoes. Buying shoes for them all is going to cost me some money xD

    17. I want this dfor two fo my dolls - the only two that are based on characters form books, and really because it would be so neat to create a crossover between two favourite series of books by having two characters from one series attend the school from the other series (both series are contemporary to each other and no mention was made in the one of the name of the school the girls attended, and with the other series set in a school, there are lots of unnamed girls (or even girls with the correct forenames who are only mentioned in passing).

And since I haven't yet made them the correct garments from their own book series, I suppose school uniforms from the other series is even more of a dream costume for them....

    18. My dream costume for my doll is Alfonse from Fire Emblem Heroes. It is my current project. I’m making it come true. :celebrate

    19. My FID man K represents an OC.
Said OC is a king, styled after Scythian royalty, and of course that means he has a formal/presentation outfit...

This is going to require a LOT of setting teeny, tiny eyelets. And 1/4 scale brocades. Gilding on leather. Teeny beadwork and embroidery... gold couching, if I can swing it. *_* But the biggest thing is going to be the jewelry - I'm going to have to cast it, and that means carving waxes, and lots of them.

The general idea is capelet over vest over shirt, trousers and high boots with boot toppers, plaque belt, and brooches in Scythian animal style. Bracelets and torc, headdress... oh, and Because Nomad.. he needs a horse. OTL

    20. Oh gosh I have a lot. My favorite outfits are the fluffy, frilly, pastel dresses for tinys. I love super detailed outfits so I'm a sucker for military uniforms and tailored suits. But if i were able to get any outfit for my doll it would be a police uniform like this or a Navy officer uniform.

    21. I have a lot of dream outfits for my bjds but one I really want above the others right now is an elaborate leather armor set, forest green and brown with gold accents and designs on it. Elegant armor that's more for ceremony than actual use. I would also want a leather armor set that looks like it's been through hell, clearly worn in the field, damaged but still protections the character enough to keep wearing it into battle.

    22. I would suggest either buying from a fabric store like JoAnn's (NOT a fabric outlet) or you could also create it at a site like spoonflower but it would be pricey that way. This is a great idea though!

    23. Selene's outfit from Underworld :aeyepop: I can just see my super poseable girl jumping off the top of a building with her coat flying behind her!

    24. So here's the list of outfits that I wanted for all of my boys! Perhaps one day I'll get good at sewing to make them all! :XD:
Amos: elaborate ethnic outfit with heaps of embroidery, gems and feathers
      Dorian: Cute classical sailor suit
      Valentin: fancy Victorian gentleman's outfit
Reggie: fantasy demon outfit (with a huge cloak, leather straps everywhere, and intricate embroidery)
Percy: something that would suit his identity of a mysterious wizard well... I haven't thought about it much XD
Silas (the newest addition to the family! IOS Jade): Military outfit, definitely! Camo print galore.... or cowboy gear, for some reason hahaha!:XD:

    25. I am opting for early 20th century style with my doll gang too. I am pretty much ready to spend to get the clothes I want, since I have no other hobbies that require money (ironically, I hate buying clothes for myself, dolls are so easy since they never gain or lose weight and complain about needing a new dress while they just got one lol.) I noticed there are very few people who can and will make these kinds of outfits even if it isn't for the money (because naturally they need to have the same body to ensure perfect fit). I am pretty skilled at it myself, but honestly it's all about time and the struggle of finding materials in this country. I recently bought a really beautifully made dress outfit, and would love to add on it a woolen coat/robe with rabbit fur decorations, rabbit fur hat and a hand warmer, so that my lady will have a winter outfit too. I opt for making everything animal-based myself since I can get the materials from a local hunter who hunts his family food, and that way I know for sure I don't support farming and killing animals purely for their fur.

Sometimes it's a strange feeling my dolls would have custom measured dresses made just for their bodies, but my most expensive dress probably cost me a hundred, that was for school prom, and it was pre-owned.

    26. @vauhtikatti I love the way that you acquire your animal-based materials. That's fantastic! :thumbup

Most of my dolls hang out in modern dress, but I would really like to have a full set of authentically styled medieval plate armor for one of my big guys, whose character has been alive for a very, very long time...

    27. I like a lot of frilly ballgown dresses and vintage 80's doll clothes, and what I want most is a Sweet Roses PJ dress for Simone, including the ribbon rose accessories that come with it. Her theme is roses and that's the perfect dress for her. I've been thinking about finding someone to make one for me or try to make one myself.

    28. Lots of different types of lolita clothes x3 I would also love to have a really elaborate kimono for one of my future BJDs *-*

    29. A nice black suit.

      ... that actually fits.

... that's really sharp and starched-looking and almost changes the silhouette of my doll.

      ... IN MSD SCALE!!!!

I'm sure I could get one that ticks at least 1 of those boxes for like $20 on taobao but.... $20.......

    30. I would just LOVE to piece together and over the top, elegant Victorian outfit. :love

    31. A Shiryu from saint seja. With the armour and the dragon tattoo on his back.

    32. I love to have ancient East Asian costumes in dorrie scale, specially those multi-layer robes commonly seen in Wuxia dramas. With one of my dorries sporting an oiran-inspired face-up, I would also love to have a full oiran outfit for her, complete with historically accurate wig and hair accessories. :love

    33. The Spidersilk Armor from Baldur’s Gate 3… ahhhh, that would be so freakin cool man.

    35. This will probably change... but for now: a blue-green iridescent moiré ballgown, with a floor-length midnight-blue velvet evening coat embroidered with red, blue, and white gems. (Conceptually, the earth wrapped in a cloak of space)

    36. I'm planning to turn my Kaito into the Phantom of the Opera :)

    37. Turns out one of my dream outfits now exists for Volks's Hinamatsuri display
My idea of dream outfits varies though – there are some casual clothes I would like for certain dolls' looks that I just can't find, so the spectrum of dream outfits runs from Heien style kimono to simple red knit cardigans in MSD size.

    38. If volks linked up with intelligent systems and put out fire emblem themed outfits-that would be nice....I'm only naming volks because that frieren staff and now these elf things are just wow.

    39. Accurate Lolita coords that match ones I have so I can twin with my dolls! And detailed FFXIV armor sets so I can cosplay with my dolls! I love super detailed tiny clothing!

    40. It changes a lot. I'm currently playing Baldur's Gate 3... so I'm kinda inspired by that at the moment. But, honestly, I'd really love to have a wardrobe inspired by all my favorite media for my dolls. There's just so many great possible costumes.

If I had to pick just one, though... probably something based on Alice in Wonderland. The aesthetic would just work so well for all my dolls.

    41. I don't dream very big: a pair of functional jeans that the dolls can also sit in :sweat I have not been completely successful with those so far but they are a staple in any casual wardrobe so I am convinced my dolls need a good pair or two.

    42. I would LOVE to get the Doll's costume from Bloodborne. I have been obsessed with that game for ages, and it'd be beautiful to have an actual BJD of the Doll.

I would also love to get an identical doll to that and get Lady Maria's costume - with the chair you find her lying on. Can you imagine them side by side?? I'd die of pure bliss!

    43. I don't have a n ultimate favorite but as I mostly display my dolls and not play with them I realized I prefer on very fancy costume for each instead of plenty everyday functional clothes

    44. Basically a suit and tie, but tailored for a girl. This is possible so I'm very happy :love
I fell in love with BJDs when I saw Doll Chateau Gladys and I immediately thought she'd be perfect as the Plain Doll. Including the weird proportions!

    45. I want max from Where The Wild Things Are.

    46. I would love a detailed lopapeysa sweater/dress, especially in specific colors.

    47. I have so many.

      1. A Sam Spade look would be so cool.
      2. Old Western look... brown leathers, vest, duster and hat.
      3. Layered old Victorian dress clothing.

    48. I want my dolls to wear casual clothes like me... if I had to choose a dream costume, I would do something PreCure-inspired. Or maybe a little witch costume.... ugh so many choices

    49. I really want to do a junihitoe kimono. I am just daunted by the task, even though I know I'll have to fake some of the layers for scale reasons.

    50. I want a couple of really nice yukatas in a specific color and style. Its really hard to find ones I like and the ones I found that I kind of like also end up being really expensive. I'm starting to think I should just buckle down and get to learning how to make them instead... :sweat

    51. Haute couture style clothing, like the mini dresses in Dior - Haute Couture in miniature

      • x 2
    52. Honestly 90s goth style clothing for 70cm guys is my dream! I have so many of my own clothes I wish I could find similar styles to in BJD size :(

    53. Yas @moredressfordolls! That is my dream, too. Christian Dior Haute Couture created these miniature dresses for their " Le Petit Théâtre Dior" Exhibit. It was a delight to see so many of their iconic looks scaled down; my favorite was seeing the Miss Dior dress from the Spring Summer 1949 Collection.

Then, during the height of the coronavirus pandemic, they staged a digital show for their Haute Couture Fall 2020 season. To be fortunate enough to be a couture client to be sent these miniatures so the clients could inspect the detailed workmanship. I always wondered if the clients get to keep the minitures that were sent to them or if they are offered to purchase the miniture version as well.

    54. I always gravitate toward fantasy and 18th and 19th century stuff for my boys. I’d love to have them all in tailored suits with fitted waistcoats, coats, and beautiful shoes, maybe with some caps or top hats thrown in for good measure. That’s the dream.

    55. Thank you very much for sharing these vidoes. I cannot wait to watch all them.

    56. Really elaborate Masquerade/Carnevale style outfits (complete with tiny masks!) would be really nice, but I'd especially like a collection of little plague doctor masks for my dollies!

I found a pattern on Etsy that I just need to learn to size up, then hopefully I'll be able to make some of my own.~

    57. Those videos are so much fun to watch, and it is so informative to see these expert atelier workers create these beautiful, authentic haute-couture pieces on a miniature scale.

Years ago, I went to the avant-garde Viktor & Rolf exhibit in London for their 15th Anniversary retrospective called "The House of Viktor & Rolf" and was gobsmacked by seeing their clothes on a troupe of SD dolls inside an SD doll house. That was so decadent and surreal, and I recall coveting the dolls with the outfits.

They had another retrospective in 2018 to commemorate their 25th Anniversary in Australia, which I wish I had seen in person.

    58. A full suit of removable doll-scale armour with proper articulation and made of actual metal. If we're going with absolute dream, then I'd love it to be as beautifully etched, blued and decorated as Henry II of France's historical armour or George Clifford's.

Armour of Henry II of France

Armour of George Clifford, Earl of Cumberland

I've had one go at metal doll-scale armour and I was happy-ish about how it came out. I'm going to have a go at more advanced doll scale armour with actual articulation this time. What I'd need for a full suit like that is someone who actually knows stuff about historical armour and how to feasibly miniaturise it as well as having the proper tools to do it not just me bumbling about trying stuff.

    59. @Crissaegrim - Back in December 2023, Sartoria J released a limited-edition Oscar SD Full Set along with a Vittoria Queen Full Set with a medieval suit. I am not sure if it was made of actual metal, but it looked so realistic.
