What you look for in Male dolls

Mar 25, 2016

    1. I agree with Pleiades. It really depends on the Character. It would be weird if you would choose a 13 year old character and give him a head which looks like a 30 year old :/

    2. I like large doll's male hands! when I hold that hands, I feel like... they make me comfort. I dont know why, I know it sounds so weird, but I feel like it :)

    3. I love my male to have more realistic features and a smirk :love I really love the mascular muscular body but it's really hard to get clothes for, so I would go for slimer muscular body.
EID Eric is my holy grail but I reshelled his character into JID (MSD) Borris Tenjin's new clothes

    4. I like basically masculine face sculpt, the cheekbones should be visible and the face narrow. I always fall for little details – wrinkles on forehead, little hint of smile on his cheeks or a specific look on his face when seen from certain angle. If the doll has personal features, it's easier to give him a personality. For body I prefer muscles and for hands and feet – lots of details, veins, bones etc.

    5. I'm not a huge fan of male dolls, but I do plan on getting a couple. I want an elf with some muscle and a less-than-realistic face and a Granado Titan. I just really want a Titan for some reason.

    6. I usually end up choosing my dolls based on my moods and character ideas. Not to say that I haven't we "Holy cow!" and done some impulse buys on the non-resin end of things.

My current attraction is the smirking type, a sculpt that even before they get painted makes you think "Bad boy"

    7. I know what you mean about the Granado Titan. I don't usually go for a body like that, but there's something about the Titan that can't be explained. I'm watching Granado for a man I really want and may get at least one Titan.

    8. I loooove big noses. Also I am always looking for a really masculine and not too androgynous face, hence why I love Iplehouse dolls. They do have both on their website and their molds never disappoint me! I could never get an anime-like male BJD because of the androgynous look and like I said I love when they look like pretty boys but rather realistic :)

    9. I find that I prefer masculine adult faces and bodies (not necessarily muscular just not feminine). And I love big ears and straight noses.

    10. I'm a guy so my view is likely a bit different!xD

I like more feminine and young male dolls... I've always had what many call a "baby face", and I think I would hate to have a doll around that looked more masculine and grown up then I do! I get enough of that from real people! xD

    11. Yup, same here. Although a major point for me would be well-sculpted hands and feet.

    12. This is right up my alley as I only collect the boys! I like realistic boys only, so realism is the most important thing to me. I see many peoples dolls looking "femme" so to speak or "waifish" and they are fabulous but I like my boys to look like "men" so to speak as my "story" is centered around fashion in one way or another & realism is what I want! If you click David with the long hair is a male model, Markus his boyfriend I think I'm going to have him be a photographer.
I have more boys coming so I have some work to do

    13. I'm looking for soft but expressive features - but with realistic body. Proportions first (2 heads in body instead of 3 is such a pain!), muscles second.
To say honestly, i have a detailed list of likes and dislikes for each part of doll to the smallest like the shape of lips edges or lower eyelid in my head, and in the end when i look at a male doll he is just 'yes' or 'no'

    14. For me it's the face sculpt first, sharp features, sly eyes, a good jawline. Then when it's time to pick a body it depends on if I want a child like characters (rarely) or a masculine characters (more likely) I really like sculpted muscles, six packs, abs, and when they add little details like veins on the arms. I just got the double jointed body from Resin Soul and DAMN he is ripped, for an MSD he's got muscles as if he's got zero body fat, I likely, I likely a lot! I'm getting a separate head for a project and I may end up getting that body again for him because I was so impressed by its movablitliy and sculpture!

    15. I am really picky about my guy dolls. I am SUPER particular about male noses, I don't like big noses on my guy dolls, but I don't like them too narrow either. I also don't like super muscular male dolls, just toned ones. And a coy expression tends to be my favorite.

    16. There doesn't seem to be any unifying factor in the boys I've collected. I have realistic guys with super manly muscle bods, I have stylized guys, skinny guys, tall guys, short guys, and everything in between. The only thing they have in common is that I like them. My collection of ladies is similar in its randomness. I don't have any dolls that fall into the anime realm, but that's pretty much it.

    17. I love male dolls with mature faces, sharp eyes, hard jaw lines etc. For some reason for me the eye shape is really important for male dolls, its what I look for first when browsing

    18. I love dolls with a mature and manly face with a sexy body. I like when the body have muscles but not too much.

    19. washboard abs, bulging muscles, overly masculine faces and thick limbs are a huge turn off for me. aesthetically, i prefer thin, somewhat lanky male bodies!
when looking at sculpts, i tend to take huge notice of the detailing around the eyes and the mouth. i also lean towards stylised sculpts rather than realistic ones. i think in general i like boys that go for a less traditionally masculine vibe :- )

    20. When I look at males, I look at the faces mostly. I find a lot of males have rather feminine faces. If its a boy I wanna know that its boy lol. I also look at the sculpts and prefer more realistic body shapes to anime style bodies.

    21. beautiful handsome face, like otherworldly beauty hahaha....just a little guilty pleasure you don't get everyday looking at human faces

    22. I look for handsome faces-- I don't generally look for male dolls that have soft features because all of my OCs are very harsh.

    23. I like teen or young adult looking male dolls. I usually go far a slim or masculine build depending on the character/personality of the doll. But I can't stand male teen or young adult dolls with baby faces, so I always avoid that. The dolls with all the features I like are usually SD sized too, but I have found some MSDs that fit the description. :kitty2

    24. boys from Volks story arc"Oath of the Silver Coin" are my favorite boys all the time =v=

    25. I like a variety, really. But, some of my more set standards are androgynous leaning more towards masculine sculpts, and more towards the more realistically masculine sculpts. I'm a sucker for muscular boys, although I have characters more on the lean side. I'm not a fan of, however, overly anime-looking guys with big eyes, small pointy noses, and overly boyish, youthful faces (that pretty much applies to my general aesthetics though).

Something else I look for in a male doll that I don't know if anyone else mentioned is more...detailed nether boy parts. I can't stand when their junk is Ken-ified, and the more detailed and realistic, the better for me. :sweat

    26. i look for beautiful male dolls who look good in long hair, i really love beautiful long haired guys.

      • x 1
    27. For most male dolls, I like their faces to be very masculine and the bodies to have some muscle, but not too much. There is only one exception to this, one of my characters is suppose to be very, very feminine in the face with a lean, but feminine body.

      • x 1
    28. Usually i prefer for the adult male dolls to have very sharp features and their bodies to be somewhat muscular, but for teen or child male dolls I love softer features on them.

    29. Hmm...a come hither look, maybe? Like if it's a beautifully sculpted guy, with an air of romance. Not overly macho, but not too adrogynous either. Someone who's just right. Chiseled cheeks and refined noses are pluses as well. :3nodding:

    30. I tend to look for beautiful sculpts (like pretty bishounen - ish look) for male bjds.( I think what I fall in love most is the face up rather than sculpts though.:sweat) Sometimes they go way beyond the pretty that they can pass of as a girl :thumbup
This is the reason why I like crobidolls so much~ I don't mind getting larger dolls though, but the face is still the pretty boy/ikemen type. I'm not much of a fan of too muscular dolls but someday maybe I'll try something like Loongsoul... or. Something. Lol.:lol::lol:

    31. I really like androgynous but like grownup androgynous, not childish androgynous, I want Bowie, not a moeblob.

    32. I like doll faces that look Korean with single eyelids or thin double lids. I like lips that are straighter, some dolls have weird lip shapes that aren't very natural to me. It would be good if he has a pretty jawline too.

For the body, I prefer SD17 sized ones since clothes are easy to get, shoulders are not too narrow, look not too young nor too old and not overly muscular. But I wouldn't mind getting a more muscular body if it suits the head.

Age wise I want my dolls to be teenagers or older, not really fond of kiddy dolls.

    33. It definitely depends on the character, or the role I want the doll to fill in my collection, if not a set character (though generally I go character-first). I like both feminine and masculine boys... and in Pete's case, I wanted his features to be more to the masculine side (well... masculine for a MNF boy, he's still pretty stylized and pretty, they all are), but his styling to be very feminine, whereas Vince is completely androgynous and more child-like.

There are dolls on my wishlist that are all-out manly and more buff, but... I think it's safe to say my preference is for more lithe/willowy bodies, and softer lines. I didn't go for the abs when I picked out Pete's body, nor would I for the next couple guys on my list who could have them. It just doesn't work for the types of characters I wind up with the most of (all my boys are indoorsy nerds... definitely no gym bunnies in the bunch yet). I do wish there were more interesting noses in my preferred size range, because I like to stick with mini guys, but I'd love to have some bigger schnozzes available, seems like everyone's got a cute little ski-slope or a button nose.

    34. I prefer male dolls with faces that match their bodies. Too often, I see dolls with faces that are really lovely, but look about 12-14ish and are on a 60-70cm body with muscles clearly indicating "adult." The incongruity throws me off really badly.

I really like Soom for adult male dolls. To me, they strike a perfect balance between masculine realism and "bishounen" stylization. Grenado has some really gorgeous manly men as well, but they tend to lean ever so slightly too masculine for me.

For the bodies, though, the best one I've ever seen is Doll Legend. Both their 70cm and 60cm bodies are gorgeous. The 60cm is late-teenaged looking, while the 70cm is a young adult. Their head sculpts are a little too sharp looking for me, unfortunately. But still, I'm actively looking for hybrid options because those bodies are just that perfect.

    35. I'm not too picky when it comes to facial aesthetics, but there are a couple of things that bother me.

I don't like heads that are too long or shoulders that are too narrow. Any kind of head is fine with me for a guy unless it's out of proportion with his shoulders, which drives me nuts to no end. It's a little odd since I don't really have a problem with wide heads, it's just... if I can't fit the same head lengthwise twice across the shoulders it really bugs me.

    36. I tend to like more masculine boy dolls. I like strong jaws and noses, which are hard to find in the size that I like.

    37. Guys with an androgynous look to them.

    38. I definitely prefer the more masculine sculpts, which is funny, because Im not attracted to that in real life

    39. I probably would go for the more masculine sculpts typically. Not hugely beefy but not ones that could snap in half if you breathed on them too hard. Having said that, much of it is dependent on character. If I really liked the look of a slender and androgynous doll then I would go for it, but I'm just picky enough anyway.

    40. I tend to go for the pretty boys LOL. I'm not too terribly fond of bodies that are too bulky/muscular/beefy (a bit is fine) because I like them K-pop kind of pretty. But I also don't like it if they are too thin or the body details are too... "cartoonish"/simplistic, especially for SD-sized dolls, as it would make me feel as if the maker was trying to skimp on resin LOL. I also tend to look at the eyes and the lips. Well-defined lips are a big bonus! :D

    41. Couldn't have said it better.

    42. I like more masculine sculpts also. I really like all the handsome fellas but I also would like to see more weathered guys. Someone with a little age worked in. It would be fun to do an Odin some day but he cant look like 20something Odin IMO. I would prefer one thats 50. Strong healty 50 but.. a crease here or there.

    43. I don't much care for the rounder, feminine faces (like young-anime-teenager faces). But I still like the ones that look 'beautiful,' or regal, like a lot of Loongsoul's guys or Angell Studio's. I also like more masuline faces, and even ones with some scars. :XD:

    44. I definitely like the manlier, muscular men! A strong jaw line (with a wider point to the chin) is a must for me, and sculpt definition on the brow is a bonus! As mentioned earlier, sculpted vein details (especially on the hands, which you'll always see) turn me to jelly too.
One thing I didn't realize that I was really particular about is the definition of the throat/collarbone area -- so far I think Soom's Gem (and larger) take the cake on throat definition.

    45. I usually like the older looking male sculpts, although for younger characters have a more femenine looking doll is a good option. I sometimes wish someone made a really old looking male doll, I'm looking foward to it for a particular character actually.

      • x 1
    46. I really like the buff masculine look. Their pecs have to be high and wide with really good nipples. Funny I know to care about something like that but I really like my guys to look like they can handle themselves.
I like really wide shoulders too.

      • x 2
    47. I tend to approach male dolls the same way I approach the female dolls.... they both must have an appealing head+body combo.
I also tend to like the beefier dolls so to speak. If I could I would indulge in many of the Iplehouse male sculpts!

      • x 1
    48. Muscles! xD In real life I have a thing for muscular men and it's the same with dolls.
The face has to be very manly looking too. A strong jaw line and a bit of a smirk are really appealing for me.
Basically I would die for a manly and muscular MSD guy with that smile that says I'm-hot-and-I-know-it.

      • x 2
    49. I like the boys with string chests and broad shoulders, it looks really good in a doll, but seems to be rare. I'm not at all into the male waif look that most dolls seem to have. It's just not my thing.

      • x 2
    50. Hips- I see a lot of companies just getting them wrong? The chest needs to be in proportion to the hips, groin and legs; I also feel like female dolls can get away with non-human hips a lot easier.

      • x 2
    51. hmmm...pretty lips are pretty important to me, as well as a good sized nose. I really dislike tiny noses on sculpts of any gender, but especially on male dolls. Eyes that are smaller and not so round/doe-eyed are another thing I look for in guys. Oh god, and bodies that don't have that vacuum-packed, totally shredded, vein-y muscle thing going...ugh...that stuff hurts to look at.

All of Ringdoll's teenage/grown boys are super gorgeous in my opinion!

    52. It mostly depends on the character I am trying to get a doll for. I do tend to lean toward pretty men, I like handsome features in a lot of them, strong but nothing too overpowering. I like pretty but masculine, although I also like slightly more androgynous boys as well.

I go for something that sets the doll apart for me. Whether it's slight smirk, a toothy grin, large wide eyes, or narrowly slit eyes, I like the face to have some unique feature, although I am not always sure what they oddity is going to be until I see a doll that has the certain je ne sais quoi that stands out to me an tells me this is the doll I was looking for.

I like some muscle definition in the arms and abs, a little in the thighs, but I don't want the muscles bulging to the point that is looks distorted to me. I like the lean muscle definition in my dolls rather then bulk. Bulky dolls are also harder for me to to find clothes for, and they don't look as good in a lot of fashions, at least I feel that way.

    53. Because my collection has been built from the very beginning on diversity (think of wandering through a fantasy world of unique characters, like in Tim Burton’s movie “Alice”) so I have no hard and fast rules for the males I seek out, other than they perfectly fit whatever character I’m going for. I have the super muscular but angelic-faced Barrio, my angel boy. I have the uber masculine Lord de Winter, master of the fantasy realm…huge, with gorgeous muscle definition. There’s a nature loving, mori man-of-the-forest named Hemlock. I have a delightful soft-bodied fem boy, Georgie, and a tree spirit named Willow. And I just pre-ordered an androgynous anime cat boy to round out my little smattering of male sculpts. Yep, it’s all about far-flung diversity here, so pretty much anything goes as long as it fits the character I’m going for.:)

    54. I love a hatchet-faced boy: thin cheeks and high cheekbones (even a little bit gaunt-cheeked), thin not broad nose, long lean face with flat planes everywhere. And I seem to have a huge fondness for males with oblong-shaped eyes, where the corners are a bit downturned or drooping. This surprises me a bit because I haven't consciously gone looking for this specific eye shape. But all the male BJD faces that I'm drawn to -- and all the boys in my collection -- are melancholy around the eyes, no matter whether the mouth is smiling, frowning, etc. (While it's kind of opposite with females - I like BJD girls with long, narrow, upturned cat eyes.)

I'll add that he's got to be somewhat realistic in style: there are a lot of slim-faced males who have the stylized anime/BL/danmei type of look, but I'm not into this. And I like males that are youthful/young adult in age - not mature grown men, but not children or young teens either - so I don't mind his eyes a little bit larger, face to be a bit softer and fuller.

As for male bodies, I look for a distance runner's build -- lean, lanky, trim, not have excessive muscle definition, but not a soft body either; the kind of 'ectomorphic' body type that doesn't easily bulk up or put on weight. So - no six-pack abs, no bodybuilder arms, no gratuitous veins, and for the love of all that's holy, no dorito torsos or man boobs. Hands are pretty important and I like them "manly" - chunky and solid, with subtle bone and vein sculpting. I'm not really into male hands that are soft, fine, elegant, delicate-looking.

    55. When it comes to faces I'm not sure I look for something specific in bigger male dolls, I apply the same than with female dolls, their features simply have to appeal to me independently of their specific features. But in both cases I think I tend to go with males that look somewhere in-between the two sides that are the more popular in BJDs, so I don't tend to find appealing the very square faces and the like, nor I like 1/3 dolls that look more like teens. Anything under 1/3 size the main rule that applies is cuteness:lol:

When it comes to bodies I'm also in-between. I don't want male bodies that look like a young teen nor I like muscly bodies. I don't particularly like the veins and I absolutely despise the six pack. Some muscle definition yes, but not like someone that has spent the last 5 years closed in a gym. I like bodies that look more realistic to men I have around and bodies that look like your average beefy superhero put me off, like literally I won't buy the doll, and I've had to compromise because of lack of options, I do have a body that has a six pack and I don't like that part even though compared with other bodies is minimal. Also, I wish there were chubby male bodies, I think we get so much less options these days with male bodies than female.
For visualisation, and in the pool of bodies currently available anything that looks similar to Dollshe Arsene body is my ideal, more here or less there but something around those lines.

I join this club! Dorito torsos! couldn't have said it better. I'm the same with the hands too.

    56. Hmmm, just as in reality I don’t really have a type as such but what I do look for is decent proportions that are relative to the head shape and facial features.
I see too many where they’re just wrong especially in the current “moob” heavy, “oops looks like I forgot leg day” fad for over muscular bodies for example. If someone worked out to that extreme then their facial muscles would be developed too giving them a much squarer face. Long thin pointy heads just don’t realistically go with those bodies. In an animation or comics sure if they’re stylised but for realistic purposes……nope!

If the facial features are soft and youthful then a more slender, softly defined body looks appropriate.

If the face is elven, fae or angelic then again slender, svelte maybe even sinewy bodies are a better match especially if the limbs are slightly longer than average. Helps to give a more otherworldly look.

I’d even extend this to ethnicity as different peoples are shaped over time by the environment and the challenges it threw at their ancestors so this ‘one size fits all’ mentality doesn’t work.

So to summarise I like the body and face shape/features to compliment each other.

If there are muscles then ones with reasonable size and definition, sort of naturally achievable if you did a lot of manual labour or were very outdoorsy.

I also like reasonably expressive hands but (unless relevant) not with abnormally long bony figures that an Aye-aye would be jealous of!

I also like a smooth chin, always disliked cleft chins especially the ones that almost look like a butt crack!

Facially I like a relatively neutral yet flexible expression with a slight hint of something that can be brought out by the faceup. Not a fan of blank, vacant, tumbleweed between the ears looks.

    57. I like realistic bodies that look good and have good mobility. I don't have many men yet, but I want them to be easy to handle and have good stability and poseability. My aesthetic requirements have to go along with that.

    58. Typically I tend to get bishonen and androgynous males dolls may it be anime styled or realistic! I really like when they have mature yet delicate features, bonus point if they have a pretty curved nose or other unique traits.
For bodies I love either slender or naturally muscled builds and I'd love to see more plus sized/dad bods, balanced proportions too as I'm pretty picky with bodies I like.
Beautiful hands with claw like nails is also a plus for me!

    59. For me, it's:
      • No pinheads or hyperrealism – if they look weird next to my melonhead Volks girls they're not going to stay
      • Stability. Lots of these big guys have surprisingly small feet, which can affect their balance. My new DZ 70cm boy body wears SD13 shoes!
      • Extra static hand options are a plus. I don't personally like the look of jointed hands
      • Something that makes the body interesting to me in either the sculpting or the expressions of posing it. It's hard to explain, but even dolls who have the same body might be different to handle. For example, my Hijikata is quite gentlemanly in how he is to handle and pose while my Claude is more stiff and formal, and they're both on the Volks SD17 body

    60. I only have 2 guys so far. I guess they have something in common with my female dolls. But, it's hard finding masculine features. I don't have either of them painted yet, sooo...
I don't know how he got me. I would consider him more feminine than I typically like.
I would also like to have a few androgynous sculpts, one day. Yes, I'm picky about androgyny too.
