Hello!! I've been thinking of getting a male doll after my complete obsession with female dolls and I realised that it's really hard to decide what sculpt to get! So I would like to know what everyone looks for in male dolls and which kind they prefer! For example maybe masculine faces and bodies vs maybe younger more feminine features? Or maybe specific features like the shape of their eyes? I would also love to see your favourite male sculpts as well!
For me, it depends on what character I'm trying to shell, but there are some regular things I usually look for. I prefer more realistic faces and masculine sculpts over anime or the innocent young boys with huge eyes. I usually prefer SD size boys to take size 10-14mm eyes. I like slim bodies, but toned and pose well. Big hands! Even better if they have veins sculpted. Tiny hands or feet ruin a male doll for me. A fairly standard size doll so buying clothes is easy. Of course, I look for the same standards on some things as I would female dolls, like resin quality, customer service, posing, and proportions.
I really, reeeally love masculine dolls, so I always look for bodies that are really muscular. For faces, I like realistic dolls with a defined jaw line. Angular faces with some contrasting soft features are great! I do like feminine male dolls, but I often dislike the really flat bodies and features. I usually just stick with really masculine dolls.
For male dolls, I like masculine sculpts with strong arms and legs, and a broad chest. For facial features, I prefer strong jawline or interesting physical features like pouty lips, frowning expressions etc depending on the character I'm trying to convey. I've also found a liking for dreaming male dolls/ lidded eyes :3
Totally depends on the character - although I do have fav looks. I have most of my guys now, so am actively looking for a couple just for me - one that looks like Kim Jae Joong would be lovely.... I have 2 EIDs & I will have to get one HID, I have several 70cm, some beefier than others (AngellStudio, Dollzone, DikaDoll, Ringdoll, Souldoll); I have an SID guy, a Volks SD17 guy & a Volks SDGrwn body, a Soom Gem & a 72 Idealian, and some 62 cm boys. Also have a Limhwa Mano, & am getting a Bobobie/ResinSoul Fang, and I have a Dollshe Saint. So I've quite the variety. AND can I just add how STUPID I was not to put EID Leonard on layaway when he first came out? OMG ~sad~
I thought I liked the less cute/more masculine look, but then I caught myself buying really cutesy hair clips and accessories for my guy so I don't even know anymore. LOL
nose shape is a major factor in whether i like a face sculpt or not. i've noticed that all my favorite male sculpts have strongly defined, regal looking noses! examples of boys with beautiful noses (imo) are migidoll ell, migidoll ryu, loongsoul ivan, migidoll yujin, luts ssd flood, etc
I like very masculine men, usually with sharp, angular features, wide mouths, smaller eyes, and *very* substantial noses. I think Granado has some of the most appealing men out there right now, but Unidoll Jace is *always* going to be my favorite man. ^o^ (But oh, Ringdoll K is begging to come home.) And I'm such a sucker for knobby, veiny hands--"working man" hands, if you will.
I looked at all of my dolls and I only have boys so far and the majority of them have small eyes. When looking for a boy, I mainly look at their facial expression and make sure their eyes aren't too big. I have one doll with bigger eyes but that's the way his character is supposed to look. I like both masculine and effeminate boys so that always makes it harder for me to decide. Some of my favorite companies for boy sculpts are IOS, Soul Doll, Miracle Doll, and Granado.
I really go for the other side, i prefer the cute boys with big eyes and androginus face. I don't have a favorite company for boys, but i love volks Okita Souji, switch Shiho and migidoll Jina. I really like dollshe Saint too, but that is a doll i will not have. There are a lot of nice manly sculpts i like to see, but i don't consider one for me, Maybe someday ^^.
Like a lot of people have mentioned, it depends on the character. Though I do look at nose and eye shape/size. I also look for a more structured jaw.
I started my collection of bjd's originally from seeing a male Iplehouse Claude painted by a well known artist. He was the most beautiful male doll I had ever seen and decided to buy one and have him painted. I love the Iplehouse male dolls, especially the SID and EID but I found out quickly that they take up way to much room and one dressed, I don't redress as it takes so long on these guys - but how I love their sculpts and the clothing that the company makes available.
I am completely all over the board with my boys. I have no preference at all - I have cute\big eyes, pretty boys, masculine men, strange, creepy, smiling, frowning, really smiling, neutral....seriously I have no pattern at all. I do prefer skinny, long and lanky bodies to muscle men, but I have\had\will have both.
When it comes to male sculpts, I love the beauty and realism of Iplehouse. And when it comes to Iplehouse, Leonard, with his big ol' nose, catlike eyes and tiny smile is still my favorite boy. Of course it's all about personal taste. Eventually you're bound to stumble across your own idea of "The One" when you're browsing sites.
Looking at my own wishlist I would say I tend to fall for melancholy looking guys and they are more in the anime-like range (example: volks Williams). Some specific things I look for in male sculpt is probably the nose shape and the hands, I personally prefer more slope-y(don't know if that's the right word)/narrow noses as I find that curvy(?) nose are really hard to photograph especially in profile or 3/4 angle XD. As for hands, they shouldn't just be curvy sticks stuck to a plain rectangle with two awkward ditches that resemble the plam line, I look for some degree of realisticity and they should look manly.
I only have one male doll, he´s a Soom Crom because I really like the sculpt. I don´t use to feel "comfortable" with male dolls, I can´t explain why.. I love my Crom but I think I will not buy any other male.... The best for me was the asian looking and the nose, Crom´s nose is awesome.
My entire collection is male (35 dolls) and I have no interest in female dolls. That being said, I am all over the place with regards to type. I have dolls as big as 68cm and as small as 11cm. Some are realistic and some are anime-style. I also have an anthropomorphic and an alien-looking one. Human, fairies, winged, fanged, tailed, horned, hooved... I'm all over the place depending on what the character needs. I think you need to decide what you're going to be doing with the male doll to narrow down your options. Is he to be a partner to an existing doll you have? A friend? A child? Just answering those questions will cut the size question down to something manageable. If he's going to be interacting with another of your dolls, that could affect the style (realistic/anime) you choose. The personality of the character (if you have one already in mind) will also affect the sculpt you choose (smiling, grumpy, open-eye, sleeping eye).
I'm another one who doesn't like muscular dolls. It's a littlw bit too intimidating for me to have a full-on man of a resin sitting in my room. I'd rather have the boyish ones, with chubby body. So I rather like bobobie body, sdgr body, doll dollzone body.. Can't think of more. And I don't like extra pudgy faces either. I like luts faces. April Story is bit too much of a baby for me. Switches are also beautiful. Are you thinking about SD or msd? Msd has a lot of boys with a more boyish body and faves which i like!
I look for specific features that suit a character. I have a girl obsession too, but a lot of male characters. For Grim, it was a smirk and a leaner build (this I have to hybrid for. I'm sure he loves that.) for Thanatos it was a sculpt available in dark tan, with a lot more muscle and then Iplehouse Kamau's lips made it impossible for me to like any other sculpt. War/Sol/Li/whoever the Frankenstein is just happened cause I really liked the detail to Ringdoll Frankenstein's body. One of the dolls I'm planning is a relatively feminine SD male, and one I'm just paying off is a large, muscular SD male. I'm all over the place. I confess, however, I dunno how exactly to break a girl addiction, as I have way more girls planned, though that might just be a part of who I am. Just like in real life, I can't force attraction to guys, maybe in the hobby, for purely aesthetic reasons, others just aren't interested in one gender of dolls.
I love mature minis, so I know that I favor MSDs with masculine faces and fairly muscular bodies, but beyond that, I haven't completely figured out what I'm looking for in a male doll. Unsurprisingly, my collection is all females so far. Souldoll Vitos tick a lot if my boxes, and one of them might be my first boy. Maybe. Sometimes, even when I'm looking for something specific, I'll see a female doll, and a new character will pop into my head. I'm learning this doesn't happen for me with males. I need to have a very well-developed idea of who the doll is supposed to be from the start, and I have to find the doll that fits. That makes it harder.
It depends on the character but I tend to like masculine biody shapes and faces. Not necessarily muscular but not too soft and feminine.
I enjoy seeing photos of lots of different male dolls--masculine, feminine, stylized, realistic--but I've only ever owned three males dolls and they've all been similar; stylized and a bit more gentle in features, no severe chins or noses. The only boy I have now is the more the stylized look that I like; he has a large head, large lips, a nice nose, and small eyes. I like different eye sizes but I need to have a large head. And while I appreciate muscly dolls, my boy has a non-muscled, lean physique, which I seem to prefer for my male dolls.
I like looking at the more realistic dolls, but both of the boys that I caved and actually bought are more stylized. I also think they have much sweeter faces than the norm-- I don't like harsh, heavy expressions on dolls in general. I like the more lean, toned doll bodies, too. Heavily muscular bodies are super unappealing to me, but going to the extreme opposite and having a soft, undefined body doesn't really ping, either; it's too immature for me.
My dolls run the gamut, both sexes. I like unusual faces. I have dolls that look like kids, teens, adults but pretty much all of them have a rather unique sculpt. I have bigger boys and lanky boys. I don't particularly like generic looking dolls, dolls that look like they could have been made by a few different companies. I like dolls that stand out and to me that means a doll has to have a face sculpt that really makes you sigh.
I only collect male dolls so in general like others have said I usually go by the character I'm shelling, or in a couple of cases, I've found my next doll surfing the sites of my favorite companies. Having only male dolls allows me to focus also more on specific details such as body design, hands, height and girth, and muscle ratio. I have males that range from super effeminate and slim, to very masculine and ripped. I just love the boys
I like so many of them but, I suppose it's the more angular faces that I like most for mature males. Kid and baby faces can look pretty cute too when they're meant to be children. I also prefer all my dolls to look friendly or deep in thought.
I honestly don't care. I think beauty lies in variety. I can definitely see how stunning many Iplehouse guys are, and I even have one myself, but at the same time I'm a bit tired of the idea that a man can't be a man without living up to a certain stereotype, and I think it reflects slightly in my collection. I do wish I could buy an EID man, because I think some of the sculpts are downright gorgeous, but they're too tall for me, so I went with a SID instead. This, however, doesn't mean I consider my more stereotype-ly feminine male BJDs as "less men". But in the end, I don't feel like I have a preference. I want my doll collection to feel diverse and different, more like real life than let's say a TV show.
I feel the same way. First of all, I don't like realistic dolls...I found this the hard way after getting a couple of realistic dolls and not bonding with them. This applies to both male and female dolls. I also prefer the MSDs and tinies and those groups are full of young faces. The faces of young boys are androgynous but I believe any sculpt can look masculine or feminine depending on the face up and how you style them. I do admire the masculine SD boys like the ones from Iplehouse, Dollshe and Granado but I could never own one. I'm the happiest with the androgynous cute boys from Soom, Volks, Switch. Right now my favorite company for boy sculpts is Little Rebel dolls, they are the SDs I would love to have! By the way, as cute as all my boys look, some are very masculine in the way they behave they are my little gentlemen.
So far I only have girl dolls, but I know I want to get some boys too. I'm looking into the MSD size range and I'm actually having a hard time finding a boy that doesn't look so feminine. I don't want them to look too masculine, because those dolls tend to look older than the age I'd like the character to be, and they tend to have a little too realistic for my style. On the flip side I definitely like to have a boy with a more masculine sculpt and faceup so he isn't mistaken for a girl. I also like my boy sculpts to reflect a friendly and mischievous personality, and that can be hard to find in the MSD size.
I have boys, girls and genderless dolls in my crew, ranging in size from 5 to 75cm... They're all over the place style-wise. That said, in general I do tend to prefer the smaller 1/3-scale (55-65cm), old-school "doll-like" male sculpts over the more realistic, 70cm+ dolls that are currently in vogue. I just don't like the tiny-eyed, pin-headed, muscle-bound Manly McMandude look that so many people in the hobby seem to have gone absolutely gaga over. (My EIDs are about as far in that direction as I'm willing to go, and while an Akando or a Tedros is arguably a more "realistic" guy than an El or a School A or a Heliot, they're still pretty stylized when you get down to it.) I'm happy that people who WANT a doll that looks like that can have them... But they're just not for me. I'll keep my owl-eyed anime sculpts and willowy pretty-boys, thanks.
Very thin bodies and a face that's realistic but not overly so. I guess a type that you could make really elegant~
I really love male dolls with just the right amount of make up. Just enough to give a natural look. Most of my dolls are male they're all very slim and have lighter make up. I like the look of the darker make up as well, but I always tend to favor ones with the lighter eye make up and pink lips~
I think all the dolls I've seen that I've thought about buying so far have been female! I see a lot of super handsome, masculine dolls around which I love to look at photos of, but when thinking about dolls I'd like to own I tend to prefer younger-looking, more androgynous boys... I'm not sure why though, maybe because I feel like they're suited to a wider range of fashion and it's easier to dress them in dapper, frilly, or feminine clothes?
Well, it depends on the character I am trying to make, but I discovered that "femenine" boys, using cute clothes usually catch my eye faster and they make me fall in love easier. I love androginous dolls. I discovered that one of the things that make me like a male doll first is the shape of his eye. If his eyes are beautiful, I love him. xD
I want the males to look like males. Some folks like very feminine looking male dolls, but I want them to look masculine. I have Leonard, Celga, as one of my males and like him very much.
Most of my collection is made of of male dolls and I have a little bit of everything including more art doll/OT. What I look for in males is that his face doesn't look too similar to other dolls I have. I like having a diverse collection. As for bodies - it depends on the head sculpt. If the head is very soft/cute then I prefer a softer less detailed body to pair with it. If the face is more realistic and detailed then I prefer the body is just as realistic and detailed. I have both simple bodies and bulky bodies and love them both equally because it works with the doll as a whole.
Generally, I think variety is best. Personally, I guess I've gravitated toward male dolls that aren't wildly ripped, but not too thin either. For faces, I prefer some degree realism (as opposed to really stylized faces), but I also find faces that are too realistic start to get a frozen mask-like look. I'm a sucker for refined but distinctive noses.
I think it's so much easier to find an attractive boy doll than an attractive girl. My overall preferences body wise are; tall, lanky guy with broad shoulders. I would never go for a muscular guy; even Iplehouse male bodies are too chunky for me! But I personally dont like skinny, feminine bodies either. I also look for key features such as skinny ankles, nice knee joints, & beautiful detailed hands. My top 3 favourite male bodies as of now are; Fifth Motif Timeless Body Ringdoll RGM04 Body Dollzone B60-005 Body Face wise, I look for realistic sculpts with elongated, slit-like eyes and unique noses. Overall, I like pretty boys rather than manly dolls haha!
As for bodies I always look for skinny ones, I don't like super beefed up bodies. It is hard to find a doll body without abs so I don't really mind them. For the face I don't like it when they have really hard jaw lines and look really masculine or small eyes. Besides that I like a lot of faces. I also prefer male dolls for some reason. I only want one or two female dolls compared to about six different male dolls.
Thinking about the male dolls I've owned in the past, I definitely chose androgynous-looking or soft-looking male dolls. Larger eyes, rounder face, less muscle (but I don't like skinny dolls either). I think it is very influenced by the sorts of male anime/manga characters (and the types of anime/manga) I like, and I started the hobby with younger-looking mini sized dolls...I think I was never able to accept a transition to the more realistic/muscular/very masculine dolls.
I love bigger noses and lips. Smaller eyes. That basically describes the Migidoll Ell; thus why he was/is my grail boy!
Realistic adult masculine faces are what I look for. Strong features, especially jaws and sharp cheek bones, with eyes in correct proportion. Can you say, " Iplehouse"? I would love to find a company that does wide shouldered but slim hipped bodies to go with my male Iplehouse heads. EID and HID bodies are way overly muscular for my taste. I also definitely prefer male dolls with light brown skin. The pale ones look so ghostly.
I've discovered I tend to look at the nose first, because I don't always like how the nose fits with the rest of the facial features. In general, though, I prefer the more brooding, sad, feminine facial features. I have found a few dolls with really masculine features that I'd love to have, but it isn't usually my preference. I will say that I don't usually go for overly large eyes. For the body, I don't usually go with the most muscular option or the least, but somewhere in between. When I do find myself interested in a muscular body, it usually does have the tanned skin. However, I'm not necessarily a huge fan of tanned skin. I usually like them pale without being ghostly. Like rosalynmouse said above, sometimes the pale ones really do look ghostly, and that can be a problem for me just as easily as tanned skin. Basically I'm picky, apparently.
What I look for in a male boy, is how mature his face looks in company photo's, also height, I like the boy taller then the girl ratio. maybe its just me who likes that. I must admit I love the muscular bodies, but not too buff. Thats really it.
I look for ones that are mostly masculine but with an air of youth/innocence to them. OR masculine/arrogant-looking ones with a touch of femininity, like a slightly narrower face and heavy eyelids. Apparently that's not a super popular combo because I only know of 2-3 male dolls I'd like to own. There is a 3D sculptor on deviantart who made the most beautiful BJD boy I've ever seen, like he's masculine enough that you can't mistake him for a girl but he still has a boyish nose and wide-open eyes. She said she was thinking of having him printed and cast and I keep checking back, but... nothing For bodies I just like proportional bodies. Shoulders and neck broad enough to look normal with a male head, but no like, tree-trunks anything. Dollstown 18-year-old boy is probably my perfect male body.
For me, I'm looking for versatile sculpts I mainly have an all boys crew. It's a plus point if the doll can look cute and fierce at the same time.
It depends for me, aesthetically, I'm drawn to more slender boy bodies, but it depends on the character I'm shelling. Many of my boys have pretty faces so that's generally what I look for right now. Cute and soft for one may not be what I'm looking at for another. That being said, I'm absolutely smitten with Simply Divine heads, those are some gorgeous boy faces!
My first doll is rather slender and his face is adrogynous pretty. He's probably around 21 years old as a human. I love him but I really like men men. My two dolls on order are beautiful but unmistakably men with athletic bodies, deep chests, and angular features. I plan to make them appear to be in their late 20s, early 30s.
Squidgy mouths, arrogant or tearful eyes, and really really no awful hyper musculature anywhere, oh my god. It is so hard to find a nice smooth boy these days!! And where are the fat ones? No chubby boys anywhere! Sigh.
I basically go for the anime or fantasy look. I only have one male MSD and three male Obitsu dolls. That's out of my collection as a whole. The rest are all girls... I'm very particular about my guys.. It tends to be really what looks "right" and if they'll fit in amongst Resinsoul/Large Obitsu/Angelregion since that's what my main three MSD's are so if they can fit in with them... Awesome. If not I'll pass. Gladly.
I like different types: skinny and muscular, androgynous and masculine, stylized and realistic. It all depends on the specific concept.
Depends on my character. For my elven make Faelyn he needed a body that wasn't too muscular or defined. His chosen scpult is resinsoul Song. But for my dragon character Ryuuga he needs a more defined body so I'm still deciding for him but I think I have it down. I don't like my dolls to have a...*ahem* huge "package" makes it hard to find pants that hide that.
I love male dolls! My first bjd was male. But they run the whole gamut from cute and micro-tiny and fantasy or anthro to big and tall and masculine, and everything in-between. I have girls, too, but far fewer... Girl or boy, it's the sculpt that appeals to me. That includes every aspect, eyes, nose, horns or not, pointy ears or not, animal or not, realistic or fantasy or anime/manga or not!
Honestly, while most of my dolls are boys, I'm still looking for the perfect boy. I want a really skinny, but still extremely masculine boy. Like ribs showing with broad shoulders and tiny thighs and veiny hands, what have you. Oh, and it all has to be MSD sized
I wish there were chubby boys too :'( the closest I've been able to find has been dollzone 1/4 bodies, but they still have ribs and hipbones, just extra hip padding
I think about it a lot - it can't be a dichotomy of the softness and motility of flesh versus the hardness and immobility of resin, because people make giganticly muscled bodies with no problem... and it can't therefore be an issue of material cost either. I just don't understand, on a basic level, why anyone wouldn't find fat bodies really gorgeous. This perhaps isn't the thread for this discussion, but suffice to say, I want chubby boys and damnit, I will make one if I must!
It honestly depends on the character that I'm trying to shell. As weird as it sounds, a main point that I look for are sculpted tear-ducts.
So years ago I'd say it was the minifee a-line muscular body.... But!!! I bought that. Fricken hated it!!! To the point of I opened him, hated him, put him in his box and sold him in disgust! Lol I just recently figured out I actually really really like non muscular male bodies. My newest obsession is a dollzone boy body. It's so stinkin gorgeous! I like the flat chest and slender bodies. I am also loving the new moe line boy body from fairyland. I like the hip joint not being jointed. As for heads... I like the half closed eyes "the mystic" look. I do like a more younger looking face as well... My favorites right now are woosoo vampire... FLAM head... Modded Mio head. I also like dollzone zo head and Benjamin head!
