What was Your first Doll? - Pt.2

Oct 2, 2016

    1. Where did you get them from? How much were there? Fondest memories? Tell me anything and everything you want about your very first doll!

    2. Well my first ever actual resin bjd, were my mirodoll Lele, and Yaya. t was about 190 before shipping, got them directly from the shop i still need to restring them, and paint them but i do love them as is. and they can stand pretty well out of box.

    3. My first was an Angel of Dream Chen from JunkySpot, back when they focused more on resin than ABS/vinyl. He was in stock and had been made in July 2007, but I ordered him on April 2, 2008. He was $175 and $8 shipping, so $183 total. OH how I wish shipping was still that low!!

I had sold off almost all of my Bratz and Barbies to be able to afford him. I ordered him a cheap silver wig from ebay, and some $2 acrylic eyes and a pair of boots, and made everything else for him. I was so broke and trying to survive on my own, I could barely afford anything to spare, so I did my own (terrible) faceup and made him some sock shirts. I had never seen a BJD in person before. He arrived about 20 minutes before I had to go to work, and I just held him and cried until I had to leave. XD I named him Amir. He was just perfect!

Over time, I progressed a lot in my skills and eventually got him some much nicer stuff. My tastes have changed so much since then, but I still have him in a box in my closet. I consider him "retired" as he no longer fits within my crew, and he is severely yellowed with some damage (both caused by me not knowing a thing about resin or where to find info--long before YouTube, Tumblr or Instagram and before I knew DoA was a thing) but I just can't bring myself to sell him.

My best advice on getting your first doll is this: Get the doll you love, even if it takes years to save for them. There is no greater feeling in this hobby than opening up the box of a doll you've adored for ages and finally got home. Likewise, there is no bigger disappointment than settling on a doll because it's cheaper or easier to obtain or someone else pressured you to get it instead, then opening it and instantly feeling buyers' remorse and resenting it. Love your doll, and do what you can to make it truly "yours" even if it takes a long time and your skills aren't very good at first. The doll is YOURS, not anyone else's, and you need to make it for YOU. This hobby is the most fun when you enjoy what you do. If you're in it to impress others, you're never going to be satisfied. Have fun!

    4. My first doll (or rather, head) is the one in my avatar. I was expecting the secondhand Migidoll Ell I bought to arrive first since I ordered them at the same time and hers was being made new, so I was surprised to see her box in the mail. She is a Island Doll Sparkle and to the best of my knowledge the only one on the forum. I could not find any owner pictures anywhere. This made me worry that she would be discontinued, so I jumped right into buying her. It was $114 with before shipping thank to getting her in dark tan. It's a shame that it will take me forever to save for the body I want, but I can wait.

    5. My first doll is the one shown in my avatar, a Volks SD10 Kun. Many years ago (*sighs*) my boyfriend and I were out on a date when he asked me very seriously if I wanted a very special piece of jewelry...or a BJD. I picked a BJD. :XD: He further surprised me by bringing me straight to the Volks USA store in Torrance back when they had a physical store. I originally wanted an MSD because they were cheaper, but seeing an unstrung doll without a face-up was very daunting to me because I have no talent for art or sewing. My boyfriend encouraged me to pick one of the standard SD10s as they already had a face-up, eyes, wig, and undergarments. I originally was going to go for a Megu but I think at the time it wasn't in stock. I saw a display doll that I really liked the look of (wig, outfit, socks, boots, etc). They had the doll in stock, so I got a mint in box Kun that I was allowed to look over. My boyfriend went ahead and got me the doll with the outfit with the socks and shoes that I liked on the display doll. In total, it was around $700-$800.

We asked permission to dress the doll in the store with the help of the Volks employees as evidently we were newbs to the hobby. Honestly, it was a great bonding experience between the boyfriend and I, and I think it probably got him hooked onto the hobby as much as I was already. In the car, we discussed what to name her and finally decided to call her, "Marie". Crazy as it sounds, it felt like we were adopting a child together. The funniest part was arriving at his parents' place afterwards. His Mom asked us if we got "it" and when she saw the doll, she was crestfallen. She was hoping to see an engagement ring on me. :sweat The ring came a couple months later. :kitty1

Best advice for your first doll is get something that you actually like instead of something you are settling for. On that note, I highly recommend getting one with a face-up, eyes, and a wig so when it arrives to you it looks closer to what you've seen online as well as giving the doll more "life" so to speak. It's a different feeling seeing a doll without a face-up and eyes versus one with a default face-up or custom face-up even if you plan on a totally different look for the doll. Also, be honest with yourself with your own talent regarding doing face-ups or sewing clothes. Practice (with appropriate masks, ventilation, and materials) face-ups on a practice BJD head (resin not vinyl nor porcelain) as depending on one's newbieness level the practice head could get damaged or stained beyond repair and you don't want that with your grail head. And it's nice to get clothes and shoes from established BJD brands or seamstresses just because the stitching and accessories are appropriately BJD size and will tend to fit better on the doll. Plus, it's easier to practice once you actually have a doll to model clothes and patterns for you.

If you decide to get a second-hand doll as your first doll, just be prepared for the variety of conditions the doll may come in and do a proper price check to see if you are being overcharged. I've been lucky that I've purchased dolls that still have their original boxes, fullset outfits, default face-ups, eyes, and wigs, and usually being sold by their first owners (so pretty much amazing conditions). However, for certain grail dolls (limited editions, company went out of business, discontinued doll, etc), you will see quite a few that are modded, have experienced wear and tear, have yellowed compared to their newer counterparts, and/or the prices are extremely high compared to new dolls straight from the company. But...having a grail doll that you've been wanting for years is so satisfying even if you are the third, fourth, or umpteenth owner. I tend to lean towards the side of get a brand new doll straight from the company as your first doll and maybe for the second doll from the second-hand market. Price range for the dolls I've acquired are from about $441 (Yo-SD, straight from company) to about $1700 (SD13, second hand) with a grail doll I'm saving up for currently on the market for about $6000 (mint in box limited edition, only one left).:...( All are Volks so the prices may not reflect all doll companies. :sweat

    6. Its so cool seeing how all of you have gotten your first doll!! I can't wait until I eventually can get one of my one!

    7. Resinsoul Ju in blue resin! I recently sold her, got her in 2014 I think? I think she was about 180 in total with shipping. Got her straight from Resinsoul. I really loved her while I had her, but as I progress in the hobby I realize I prefer SD human dolls ^^ since I wasn't doing anything with her, even displaying her, I decided it was time for her to go where she would be appreciated more! I'm very happy she's with someone who loves her more now.

    8. AMEN!! That's it right there!! Drop the mic it's done

    9. My first doll was a Dream of Doll DoC U (or Yu, I think, they changed his name not to long ago), named Kazuki. He arrived December 10, 2007, and cost around $300 USD. I had been wanting a BJD for several years and got a part time job just to save up for one. I was soooo excited, I kept a photo from the website on me right up until he arrived!! I shook for the entire box opening, I might have cried too haha!! I brought him to school with me pretty much everyday after that; lucky I went to an art school so it wasn't too weird haha!!

He's still with me, almost 10 years later ♡ I almost sold him once, but ended up keeping him and I don't regret a thing!! I still love him very much and I can't believe it's already been so long...

    10. My first doll is the one in my avatar.. She's a Soom Saiph.... since 2008 i had been admiring bids and this year i started collecting them (since i make my own money now lol)... i bought her second hand off of eBay (i didn't know what i was doing at the time.) and i had also purchased a Elfdoll Soah at the same time, i was expecting the elfdoll to arrive first but my saiph did... and I've been in love with her since.. every doll i get can't seem to hold a candle to her...

    11. My firsts were a AngelRegion Tanned Ren & a CustomHouse Zephyros! c: If I remember correctly, they were about $300-400 each. I bought Ren first technically. I'd never seen a tanned doll before and his sculpt was so pretty so logically, I went with my heart and said yes. The only rule my parents had was that I could not buy a second doll until my first arrived home, buuuuut I broke that the second I saw Zephyros' face. I just fell absolutely head over heels for him. "And he's limited, I can only get him now!" It was such a good excuse~! :whee:

They both arrived in the same week too, weirdly enough. I can't remember who came first 'cause they were shipped to different locations that wasn't my home, but oh geez. They were so much fun! I did end up having a harder time bonding with my Ren so he only stayed with me a few months before he found a new home in Florida. My Zephyros stayed with me much, much longer. I just loved bringing him to school with me and along during errands. He was just amazing and I loved his character a ton too. But as he grew in my head, I thought I could a more fitting sculpt to reflect who his character was becoming. So, I sold him to fund a reshelling that never ended up happening. :(

I definitely regret letting him go and I hope that maybe one day, another Zephyros will pop up on the marketplace and I can give them a new home even though they're not my Knowlt. It's just a sculpt that holds a very dear spot in my heart. <3

    12. My first doll was a Suzette by La Compagnie des Radis, I got her this year in April (but bought her last year in December). She's a limited edition doll (20) and I think I paid around 480€ for her ? But that was with shipping and her fullset clothes.
I've been waiting for years before getting a BJD, because I wanted my first BJD to be one that I really liked more than the others. When I saw prototype pictures of Suzette, I knew that she would be my first bjd and she's still my favourite :3

    13. It's neat seeing where everyone got their first doll!
I had other dolls before I found bjds, but my first resin doll was a Fairyland feeple60. I don't have her anymore but I loved her! I got her second hand and I definitely prefer the less wait time that way.
I'm thinking about getting a with doll next!

    14. Its so much fun seeing everyone reminisce about their first doll and seeing how much love they have for that doll!!

    15. My first ball jointed doll was a second hand 2010 green Bobobie Ariel. The minute I saw them I fell in love. They had the saddest little face and the cutest ears. They were the perfect price and I knew that I had too have them. They arrived November 25th 2015 and I extremely excited after waiting for what felt like forever. The previous owner was kind enough to send them with some extras. I made pretty much all their clothes and even their wig! I take them with me pretty much everywhere as it's very comforting to have them around. I don't think I could ever get rid of them, They mean to much to me.

    16. I got my girl a month or so ago, she's a Cerisedolls Ellana in dark tan. Even though I just got her she is my very first doll :whee: The wait was half a year so it feels like I've had her for a while...

    17. I got my first Bjd around a month ago too, before that I had some kikipops, pullips and licca dolls. Momoni was my first ever bjd and I love her so much, can't take my eyes off it.

    18. My first bjd was an impldoll gela!! I love her so much! I got her for around $200 for the full set including shipping.

    19. I'm currently in the process of getting my first BJD and I am so excited. She is a ResinSoul Bei.
I'm not sure if that exactly fits the discussion but that will be my first doll. She was $120 (including shipping).

    20. That totally fits this discussion and I'm super excited for you!!!!!

    21. Heh, my first BJD was a lesson in what not to do. Basically, I picked a doll from a little-known company and she arrived badly strung, which made me hate her. She turned out be a slim mini on top of that, which I didn't know at the time, since there was little to go on research wise, and that meant nothing I bought clothes-wise fit her. I was hit with a nasty combo of heavy buyer's remorse and loathing for my doll, something I never want to go through again.

But on the flip side, I discovered very quickly that I hate hip joints and separate ear pieces, so I avoid three-piece torsos like the plague now. As others before me have said, if you're interested in a doll, any doll at all, make sure you research them heavily and ask plenty of questions about the doll and company. I really wish I had, because I probably wouldn't have picked the doll that I did had I looked around more.

    22. My first doll was Dollshe's Husky, who I got for $525, and I had no intentions of actually getting him at first; he was not at all planned.0

I spent three years lurking in the community while saving for my first doll all the while unable to completely decide on what doll to get. Then Dollshe(whose classic dolls I'd fallen for early on) decided to bring those old sculpts back, Husky included, and I'd finally decided to get him because at the time, the re-release was supposed to be limited. Now, Dollshe clearly ended up changing his mind on that, but at the time, the thought that I would not have another chance anytime soon to get this boy got me to finally decide on my first doll and get my collection started.

The wait for him was also really long (6 months), which has honestly made waiting for my later dolls much easier.

    23. First Doll is DOD H Duncan. Took me over 3-4 months of trolling around that site and Luts to work up my courage to spend that much money on a doll..... I did buy almost a full set - got face up, wig and outfit. The eyes were a gift. I could not justify spending money similar to that of a pair of shoes for real people at the time. So he was bare footed.
The face up was decent if not surprising good for a default.... the body however, was not as expected. He could not stand and keep bending over.
After I bought him boots which secured his ankles better and I messed around with his strings he did manage to hold poses better.
I have since upgraded the body to one of the double jointed ones from DOD later. I kept this doll as he is my very first purchase. He however has not been out of the box for about 6 years now LOL

He is the only doll I have kept for memory sake. Rest of the dolls who came after him all were re-homed if they did not click with me

    24. I cruised ebay a long time and then a Luts Clary called out to me and said adopt me!!!! I did and still have her and still love her.

    25. My first doll was a Dollzone Megi, back when there were no alternative Megis, like they had just opened up and it was still the classic sculpts. I instantly fell in love with him, but a lot of my friends were like "It's a Chinese company, it's not going to be as good as a Korean or Japanese one." And I didn't care, I wanted him, it was loooove. I shortly after bought him a brother, a Mo, because this new company "DollZone" I had no idea how long they'd be around, Chinese BJDs? How long would THAT last? Lol XD

    26. Vince was my first ever. About 230-ish without shipping? Which was, at the time, the most I'd ever spent on anything after my computer. Certainly the most I'd ever spent on something that didn't have, like... a function, beyond 'it's cute'.

Fond memories include... honestly, just sitting with him in the crook of my arm or leaning against my chest, a few times, really brought my stress down. I'd stroke his little foot like a worry stone, or hold one of his hands and just kind of focus on the feel of his resin and the weight of him. But as for specific things, taking him out to a craft/fabric store-- we were having a meet there, and then I got some fabric to expand his wardrobe, and I was telling the woman at the cutting counter it was for doll clothes, and so I just pulled Vince out of his carrier and she was just really interested and complimented him and said she would love to see what I made for him if we ever met there again.

    27. I ended up getting two at once for my first doll, since I had saved up for an SD-size, but at a doll meet found that I preferred MSD-sized. So it was Bluefairy Tiny Fairy Emilie and Tommy. No regrets, I still have them and enjoy them.

    28. Mine was a DollZone, but I ended up being disappointed due to choosing the wrong resin colour. I wont make that mistake again!

    29. The first doll I bought was a kid delf Yuz from Luts in the end of July but I'm still waiting for him...
Last week I ended buying a second hand Unoa Sist who will arrive first than the first doll I bought lol

    30. For me I don't have my first doll yet but I know which one I want. Her name is Chloe and she is a Senior Delf from Luts. Every time I see her I am more taken with her. I can't wait to save up the money to bring her home. I think she is about $700 if I end up getting her some clothing and a wig too, but I can't remember exactly.

This comment really resonated with me @CloakedSchemer, I plan to take it to heart. I want that first time joy and excitement you get from opening up that doll you worked so hard for and love. thank you!

    31. You're welcome! By the way, I think you'll love Chloe. I have a Senior Delf Howl (as well as two other SDF boy bodies and an event head), and I adore him. He poses well, has nice resin, is easy to handle and restring, and Luts is relatively fast on shipping compared to a lot of other companies. I have Luts dolls/parts in both real skin normal and real skin brown, and they're both beautiful. Not to mention ALL the great clothes and accessories they have right there on site! Good luck with your girl. :)

    32. My first doll is Volks Okita Sōji!!!!!! He is sooooo pretty!!!:D

    33. My first doll was a minifee chole, lol. I love her so much but Im considering giving her away to my cousin. I damaged her a little bit and I don't think I could ever repaint her face. I want to repaint her because my style has changed but I don't want to risk further damage. I'll probably get a replacement doll, she would still be the same character which is the most important to me. Also I can give her the face-up that would match her better.

    34. i too am waiting for my first doll, he will be a Ringdoll Norman Light 2.0 on a RGM04 body, and for me the entire purchase was about $760 in total. i cant wait for him to arrive home, i am counting the days until i can say i am officially in the bjd hobby x- D

    35. I resisted bjd for over a year, helped by the fact that I was scared of buying anything from overseas, plus I hadn't seen a happy-looking sculpt at all - just moody or bland looking ones, and I was a bit scared of dolls at that time! Then I saw a used AoD Qian on ebay, and thought oh she's got a peaceful, happy kind of face! My offer of a lower price was refused by the seller, so I watched some videos on youtube about her, and someone mentioned happyhouse4you dealers, in China (now ceased trading I think) which is where I ordered her from, with company faceup. She was PERFECT right out of the box - I had no idea about all the bjd problems because I never had a problem with her :chibi

NB - Alices Collections is where I go now for AoD dolls, if anyone's interested - AoD aren't good to deal with direct.

    36. My first doll - now a bit over five years old - was a Dollzone Scarecrow Hal (in my avatar). I got into BJDs because of him :D... I came across him and just had to have him! He was quite new at the time; I believe mine was probably the second Hal on Den of Angels, and I seem to recall that for the first few years that I had him, the sculpt wasn't particularly popular.

I still adore my Hal and he remains one of my favourite sculpts ever. At the time, I bought him as a full set; I ordered him about five days after discovering BJDs XD, and though I was interested in doing face-ups and making clothes, I didn't want to end up with a faceless, naked doll in case it turned out I was rubbish. Five years later, there isn't a single part of the full set I'm still using, apart from the doll itself. The one thing I regret a little is getting him in White Skin. I guess if I were to buy him again, it would be in Pink Skin, which I find easier to face-up and easier to photograph. But he is who he is now in WS, adorable if a little pale ;). Fortunately he was made in Dollzone's old white resin which was creamy rather than paper-white, and he has mellowed too, so that all worked out well.

As far as I'm concerned, he was a *perfect* first doll.

    37. Ah, the first!
My first was a Mystic Kids Evelyn in white skin, renamed Evangeline.
(As I've mention in other posts, I think) My friend got a BJD for Christmas in 2014, and the moment I saw her BlueBloodDoll Naomi in January 2015, I knew I had to have one. I had been debating getting one for a while but had never put any real thought into it. I realized, holy cow! I have enough money for a doll of my own! So as I sat there next to my friend and her Naomi, I ordered my first doll off of eBay. I didn't know anything about recasts or fraudulent sellers or anything like that, but I was lucky enough to happen to buy from a legit seller! She came with the company face up and body blushing, because back then I thought it was important. When the seller asked me what skin color I wanted, pink, white, or yellow, I told them either pink or white was fine, just send me whatever. They sent me white, which I ended up loving. I didn't know about yellowing, lol.
My favorite memory of my first doll was when I was collecting stock photos of her before she arrived, I told my mom I bought one and showed her the photos. Her face was priceless. She was like, "Oh shoot, she was serious about this doll thing." My other mom was more supportive about it, complimenting the doll's eyes.
My girl Evelyn arrived in February 2015, and I still had a lingering fear she may be possessed. (Too many horror movies!) I had already bought furniture for her, a bed, wardrobe, and vanity set (which all of I no longer have) and my closet became her bedroom. When she didn't start walking about at night I got more comfortable with her and started handling her more.
      Still have her today~ :3

    38. The first one is absolutely precious! My first bjd and my only one so far is Gabriel. He is an IOS doll Mars 60cm tall. He's there as my avatar. I've been interested in bjds for a long time, several years or so. The thought of owning one had always been dismissed because well, they are so expensive and I just can't ask my parents to buy me one. They have done a lot for me and my two siblings and I won't add to their burdens. Then I had a decent job so I had some money saved.

By chance I saw a random post in social media about this certain bjd company doing a great discount. I was not interested at first, because I'd pretty much buried the thought of having a bjd. The same post kept appearing because apparently some of my friends there kept sharing and bumping it. For the sake of eyecandy, I went ahead and check the company website. The sculpts were not what I had in mind about bjd. My first ever bjd image was from DoD. But then, I saw Mars and I love his photos. I went back and forth comparing him to other sculpts, and I still like him the best. I put the thought down for a while, considering the price which was still high even after the discount. But I kept thinking about him, and I started imagining his character, his style, him sitting on my desk, and so on. Finally, I decided to take action and ordered him on layaway with a friend's help.

From that point on, I've ordered some clothes and accessories for him, learned unstringing, learned cleaning and avoiding stains, tried body-blushings, knitted a scarf, learned to take good pictures, even joined DoA and made new friends! This hobby is an adventure!

I hope you all have great fun with your dolls. I'm certainly enjoying Gabriel's company :XD::3nodding:

    39. My first doll is DZ Miss Kitty, though at first came to me Akagi Doll's Ban head, but not sure if I should count him as a doll ;). At first I wanted to buy a body for him, but finally decided that he will stay as a UFO practice head. So my lovely, tiny cat doll is the first one. It was great feeling to purchase her after many years of observing, searching and thinking how it would be to have finally my own BJD. Not to mention that DZ Yume was the first doll I ever wanted to buy, but I'm glad I've waited few years more and buy doll I actually really want.

    40. My first doll was an Iplehouse Leona that I won on auction. I had been looking for about a year, but the prices and the fact that they were made so far away, put me off. I was drawn to Luts dolls, but they were out of my price range for what I wanted. When I finally took the plunge, I lost the first auction I participated in, I was devastated. I tried again a few weeks later and won. That was 2 years ago, and I have never regretted getting into this hobby.

    41. My first doll was a Boy&Girl Sharon in white skin. I was about 11 or 12 years old and had stalked anything I could find online about BJDs for months, and I stumbled upon him, a bjd I could afford with all my saved money. Of course, being a child I thought he was a "she" with the name Sharon, and I didn't know much about sizes, but once he arrived I was in love.
He didn't have a face, but he came with default acrylic eyes, fur wig, a bathrobe, and a default outfit. I was in love. I took him everywhere, made stories about him, loved him, showed him off to my friends and family. He probably went years before his first faceup, before a very sweet older girl took me under her wing in bjd things, gave him a face and gave me clothes for him and his sister doll I had at the time. Dolls came and went, but he always stayed.

Even though I left the hobby for some time, I still have him, sitting in a box now, waiting to be de-yellowed, restrung, and given a new faceup. I never could part with him because of how much he meant to me. Even now that I've returned to the hobby with different taste, I know I could never sell him, just give him the fix-up he deserves and continue loving him. :)

This is honestly the sweetest story I've ever heard! That was so thoughtful of your boyfriend to give you the option, I can only imagine how sweet picking the doll and accessories out was!

    42. I'm so excited for my first bjd and it just fits into my budget. I'm super nervous though about hybriding (hybridizing?) my first doll but I really love the resinsoul Lan's head but the shoulders are super narrow and make it look disproportionate so I think I'm going for the mirodoll xm girl. Her jointed toes make me so happy.

    43. Awww...thanks MaudMAryFlynn! It was really sweet doing that with him. It was so cute seeing him in the Volks store saying, "Oh...maybe we could get this for her...or how about this?..." Totally better than a piece of jewelry. :dance

    44. My first doll was a Withdoll Lamb Lea. I had been tentative at first, since I was relatively new (by relatively new, I mean, I understood all the terms, knew about sizes, resin colors/matching, hybrids, etc). I had imagined I was going to buy a SD or maybe a MSD at the time, but Quinlan was the first doll to make me actually imagine myself playing with, taking pictures, bring with me, etc! So they were my first doll :love I was honestly underwhelmed with how smol they are, but no I'm totally fine with it :whee:

    45. Where did you get them from?
Johnny was my first on-topic doll (my little Hujoo came before him). He came from Angel of Dream via Alice's Collections. I've had him a year and three months now.

      How much were there?
By himself Johnny would've cost two hundred bucks plus shipping and handling...but I also ordered a ton of clothes for him at the same time. Thus the whole order ended up being a little over three hundred sixty.

      Fondest memories?
I think my favorite memory of this doll is finding out what color his eyes were. I was expecting brown or blue eyes, so when I lifted the face mask and saw gray eyes I was ecstatic. They're nice eyes too; I think they may be glass.

Another of my memories is humorously negative. Johnny wears an ununusual wig, one that makes him look a little like a young Albert Einstein...and my grandmother HATES IT!!! One night she glanced over at Johnny, then looked at me and said "I'm beggin' you, get that poor doll a new wig!" I still giggle about that one.

Tell me anything and everything you want about your very first doll!
There isn't really much else to say; Johnny was/is my first doll and I love him to pieces. He's not alone on the shelf anymore, but he'll always be special.

    46. Where did you get them from?
I received my first on-topic BJD (bought several off-topic ABS BJDs before and some ball-jointed, but not strung, fashion dolls) from PlanetDoll (a tan PlanetDoll MSD Riz).

      How much were they?
I want to say my doll cost a bit less than $200 with free shipping.

      Fondest memories?
Fond is an interesting word. To me, fond is a calm, kind of reserved word. Edwardian ladies are "fond" of people. With BJDs, I'm more LOVE IT! LOVE IT NOW!

My favorite memories of the customization process with my first doll were therefore more exciting and somewhat nerve-wracking: dyeing my doll, learning that a body coloring technique I wanted to try wasn't going to execute well with tan resin, developing a totally different character than I intended, modding a wig and sewing my first clothes, etc.

I didn't do as much with my first doll as some of my others, so perhaps my memories of the customization process with my PlanetDoll Riz (Pip) were in that way more reserved and deserving of the term "fond" than that of my other dolls.

Tell me anything and everything you want about your very first doll!
Fond (in its common refined and reserved sense) is also not particularly apt for my first doll's personality either.

She's going through the rough period of growing up just at the start of puberty, when all one's superiors are too bossy and controlling. (She is 11, after all. Practically an adult.) As a result, she has a nasty habit of seeking out the most inventive, vindictive, and painstaking ways of pissing people off and being deliberately argumentative.

She also likes blasting death metal music because she can tolerate louder sounds than most people, especially if she plays it in her deaf ear. She likes the vibration, and how it makes old people think she's some sort of demon child. One grandmother hates her, and the other thinks Pip's super cool and wants to learn how the "cool kids" (reeaaalllly need scare quotes there) are doing it these days.

It's an aesthetic [demon child] she spends the majority of her waking hours diligently cultivating, instead of doing her homework. It doesn't help that she doesn't really face many consequences for slacking off on her work at school. (My sister is like this--never really has to study.)

    47. I'm actually in the process of waiting for my first doll as we speak! He's a Soom Crow, and I couldn't be more excited about him! Aside from him though, I've only ever had generic, off topic dolls. Actually, I've collected Transformers for most of my life before finally switching over to bjds. (That's what happens when you complete a collection I guess!) :eusa_sile

    48. My 1st doll was a preloved aidoll ange ai hani, i have been very interested in bjd for many years but always think that they are too expensive to buy as i have adult commitements! But she was very affordable, comes wif clothes, wig and eyes and coa ! I fell in love and contacted seller and took her home the very same nite! Now i have 3 preloved aidolls cos i really like the way they look. :)

    49. My first doll was a pre owned doll zone hid, I purchased him off of ebay, I can't remember what I paid for him, I'm thought I'd keep him forever since he was my first but I think I might end up selling him.

    50. My first one was a Resinsoul Bei I got back in late 2015; ordered directly from the website and paid about 150 for her. She works well for sewing clothes for, and fits Barbie clothes (and Sparkledoll) really nicely!

    51. My first doll is a hybrid of Doll Love body and Mystic Kids Evelyn head. She is young elven girl, who just finished up elven university of magic and nature. Through time she traveled a lot and she was looking for her missing parrents, and she became a battlemage. :)

The body is second handed (I´m it´s third owner) and the head is brand new, bougth from Dollsquare. :)

    52. My first BJD is my Gen x Naomi from Blue Blood Doll. I was actually browsing various BJD sites, making a wishlist, and then I ended up on Blue Blood Doll and saw her. I remember thinking how lovely she looked, but I couldn't afford to get her at the time. My mom offered to buy her for me, plus a few extra things for her, and then I could pay her back later. So she came home in November 2016, and with the shoes and two wigs I also picked out she came out to around $360 or so.

I was excited when she arrived, and I remember opening the box and it took my breath away how beautiful she was in person. I ended up using the gift wig that came with her as her main wig, and I found an old outfit for a Ken doll that fit her so she wore that for a while until I made her a few things and bought a bunch of clothes for her later.

Even though I now have 4 other full dolls, a floating head, and another girl on the way, I still adore my first just as much as when she first came home.

    53. My first doll is a DollZone Annie and I got her from Alice's Collections. She was about $260, including shipping and a pair of lavender "converse". I ended up purchasing a secondary body for her later on, second-hand from the marketplace. Before I had gotten the body, I would always play around with air dry clay, the kind that kids play with, very light and soft. I made her knee caps to hide the square shape when she was sitting and I even made "breast caps" for the fun of it to give her bigger boobs. Just earlier this year, I finally sent her out to get a face-up done and I love her even more! She is so beautiful, she has two wigs that fit and now has a couple different outfits. I'm taking my time and enjoying her everyday.

    54. Where did you get them from?

A Resinsoul Song in light tan from the junkyspot.

      How much were they?

      He was about 175.

      Fondest memories?

Probably discovering how to do face-ups and fleshing out my first character. Also, finding new shops and discovering Etsy. I bought so many wigs and clothes. I miss him.

Tell me anything and everything you want about your very first doll!

I learned a lot from my first guy. I found out that I'm a character over doll person, so if a new doll comes in and I don't have a character that needs to be shelled they won't stay long. I also learned I appreciate realistic dolls more than fantasy. I do wish I kept him though because when I come across old pictures it breaks my heart, he was so cute.

    55. My first doll is a Little Rebel Jelle on a Fantasy Doll body! <3 He costed around 300+? It was 2 years ago, so I don't really remember. :sweat

    56. My first doll was a Doll Leaves Yoko! She was $159 before shipping (which I think was about ~$50??) and she arrived roughly three months after I initially ordered her. I absolutely love her to pieces and she is without a doubt my favourite doll, even though I'm now onto my fourth doll :love She is absolutely GORGEOUS, and I'm so excited to be able to buy a body for the Ida head I have laying around soon~

    57. My first doll was a ringdoll Dracula in ws. He posed great right out of the box.

    58. Limhwa Leda is my first doll. She seems to need some new faceup, but I haven't got around to get her done.

    59. Avatar pic was my first doll, a Volks MSD Mako that I got directly from the store here in Cali

    60. My very first SD doll is a Night Lolita. I recently got her like 1 week ago, second hand. I know she is not exactly a BJD but I just love her still. <3 I am already making her a wig using my old cosplay wig which I don't use anymore. And I am ready to make her clothes. Right now, I am researching so I can choose and purchase for my real, authentic very first BJD. I really do hope I get one soon :D
