What Type of Doll Owner Are You?

Jan 8, 2010

    1. Artist, storyteller and mommy I guess x) I love just hanging out with my dolls, but also customizing them, creating their stories, oh and I also love photographing them, lol.

    2. I'm a dolly storyteller, my dolls all have very in depth characters and backstories! Even the dolls on my wishlists all have backstories lmao :XD: If only it was easier for me to find some clothes that fit my characters properly. Finding the right wigs and clothes is the hardest part of being a doll owner in my opinion.

    4. The ones I have are displayed, but not in cases. Just on tables and on a large castle facade I have on my wall that my parents made my sister and I as a headboard for our bed when we were little (which is also covered in figmas and nendoroids). I do like to take them down and play with them every once and a while, especially playing dress up.

As for characters, most of the future dolls I plan on getting will be shells for Pathfinder characters so they'll have rich backstories and personalities.

I would also consider myself a lurker somewhat as I don't have many dolls (I'm expecting my first resin very soon!) but I love to window shop and add to my huge wishlist.

I love taking my girl out n about with me even though I know it cam speed up yellowing. Once she is completely put together I will take pictures of her.

Eventually I'd like to get a nice camera and move to doll photography too.

And I just know I'm going to end up as a doll collector. I got my first less than a year ago and now I have 3.

    7. i am in the "The Other" category ^-^
i would be The Artist. in that i not only take photos of my dolls but i make them clothes i draw and paint pictures of them i use them as models for my drawings i do their face ups and body blushing, i make their wigs and i write their backstories be it a short character bio or a complete fleshed out world with its own rules and history.
I also stalk around looking at other peoples dolls and what they do with them looking for inspiration and ideas ^-^ and just enjoying other peoples art
for me my dolls are an extension of my artistic self they are a canvas and a tool they are physical representations of my characters that i have created.

....ps i also just like fiddling with them and sometimes holding them and playing with their joints >.>

    8. I thought I had replied to this once, but cannot find my original post. I am a combination, which many of us are.
I am a doll collector and photographer. I love to collect dolls and collect fun things FOR the dolls--outfits, wigs, eyes,
clothes, items, etc. I have some dioramas that I have bought and many different items for picture taking opportunities.
Mostly, though, my dolls sit on display, cared for masterfully....

    9. I'm fairly careful with mine, but she sees a lot of out of box time. My wife cleans her once every two weeks, but it's just a gentle wipe down. She's usually getting dressed for a photoshoot with a new dress I've made for her. So artsy I guess. :3nodding:
I prefer larger dolls, MDF or larger... But my wife wants a tiny20...

    10. I would say I am an over protective designer! I love designing clothes for my dolls. I am a seamstress and designer by trade, and actually developed interest in BJDs because they were like tiny little models for my designs!

I must admit I am rather over protective of my dolls though, I am TERRIFIED of damaging them.

I love taking her out and posing her for photographs and I LOVE planning outfits and overall looks for her. I love searching for inspiration for my doll, I think it's my favorite part of the hobby is planning. It really strengthens my creativity and imagination. I love it so much

    13. I'm definitely a "doll mom". I've never wanted real children but I love my dolls as though they were my children. I love to give them faceups, sew their clothes and give them toys/accessories (like Cicero's alpaca plushie). I love to photograph them too; in the past three days I have taken probably over a hundred photos of them. I'd say I am pretty clumsy with my dolls; I have dropped Dhalsim (he's fine) and I don't wear gloves or anything when I handle them. I keep them out of their boxes, but my room has such heavy curtains it might as well be a dungeon, even in the middle of the day.

    16. This is me - They're toys. I play with them. I'm not careless with them but I'm not precious about them either. It's not like they're made of glass and will shatter if I look at them wrong.

I take them to meets, and bring them to work, and to friends houses, and to conventions, I hand them to anyone who shows an interest. If meets are outdoors or in public places I'm generaly the one talkign to children whose parents send them over to ask about the dolls and handing over my dolls for them to hold (one went home with a friend's toddler once and I collected it back the next time I babysat). If I take them on holiday they travel in my hand luggage rahter than the hold luggage but it's just my regular bag (same as when I take them to work), not a specially padded doll bag or anything. I do have doll bags, but that's for convenience of getting as many dolls as possible to a meet while travelling on public transport.

      I sew for them. Mainly because it's so hard to find the right sort of styles for them - Lolita is not Victorian, neither is nylon lace... {shudder!}

I do display them (no point in keeping them boxed up) but that's more somewhere for them to go while I'm not actually playing with them, and they often end up plonked down wherever is handy when I need to stop playing dolls and start doign somethign else (three of the tinies are in front of the books on a shelf in the hallway where they were unpacked from my work bag on a couple of days last week - they haven't made it back onto the tinies shelf. One of the SD's is half dressed in the sewing room). It's not really a acarefully organised display or anything (they're crammed in too close for that, even if I were inclined to do it)

    17. As an artist, I enjoy owning BJDs because I can customize them - I enjoy the idea of painting them, making everything for them by hand, giving them maintenance.. and turning them into characters with their own personalities and stories to tell. They're like walking works of art, but they can be ever changing. That's fascinating to me! I also really enjoy photography and I can spend hours taking hundreds of pictures, for sure. BJDs are also just nice to have around, especially when you've put so much work and love into them that they really do feel like you're sharing company. It's pleasant.

    18. Artist and storyteller, very much! I have five dolls (soon six) and they were all characters before I got around to buy them. I enjoy doing their faceups, making them clothes and furniture and stuff.
I'm also kinda cheap, because I'm poor, so I buy cheap dolls or second hand dolls, and I constantly come up with ideas for things to make and sell, since I need the extra income (and love crafts!).

I haven't tried to write the stories down except for the first one a long time ago, because I'm stuck in a loop of achievment avoidance. I write the facts, though, and quite a lot of it, but I can't get around to write it like a story although it's what I really would like to do.

I used to be so careful and afraid that something might happen to my dolls, so I usually kept them in there boxes. Now I'm trying to display and play with them more, even though with kids and cats there's a lot of things that could go wrong.

    22. I'd say I'm mostly a casual doll owner and creative mind. :3nodding: I don't worry too much about them getting broken or hurt, and I love displaying them around my room. I love taking them out and taking pictures and playing with them, but mostly I love the creative process of either finding dolls for my characters or making characters for specific dolls! I'm also a planner; even if I'm not going to be getting a doll for ages, I still want to have everything planned out.

    23. I guess if I have to pick from the list it'd be a doll collector! I like having a variety of dolls in different sizes, different body types, different expressions, from different companies and so on, although I guess I do have my favorite styles and companies that I buy from more than once. :XD:

I'm also a bit of a doll artist, photographer, storyteller and mommy! LOL.

I learnt to do faceups on my own, even if my faceup skills still sucks (the eyebrows urgh!), and I love to create outfits and props for them, even if said outfits and props are crappy too LOL.

My dolls all have stories of their own, even if I am too lazy to actually sit down and write it all out (they are mostly ideas and random plots in my head).

And of course, I love taking photos of them, even if I always procrastinate when it comes to editing and posting those photos so my blog/twitter/instagram/flickr are always full of back-dated posts LOL.

And as much as I love playing with them, I am also a bit paranoid when it comes to taking care of them because I'm afraid they'll break or get damaged even if I know they aren't as fragile as I thought. But what to do, a "mommy" got to fret over whatever she got to fret over about LOL. Though, when it comes to my boys I don't really see them as my "children". More like my "harem" LOL! :wiggle

If I got to summarize I guess I just want to collect 'em all, give them a character, work on them, spam photos of them, give them a little bit of love now and then even if I get lazy and none of my dolls are 100% completed yet LOL. :doh

    24. Sadly, right now I'm just an admirer as I have yet to own an actual BJD. That being said, I also already have specific characters I want to create, and I know the instant I get my hands on the dolls I want for them, I'm probably going to just gush over them and take pictures and set up scenes.

Goodness, I'd have to say that I'm almost all of them except for a collector. I really only have some characters I want to specifically create and keep. Also not a favoritist, I love seeing the different and unique styles some creators put forth, though it largely depends on what I aim to create or bring to live!

    26. Because I can draw, I always draw my characters, but honestly never thought about making them into dolls. In fact, the more I work on a doll, the clearer her personality is to me. I guess I'm kind of a mommy doll, because of how much I'm scared of damaging them (I put gloves, I keep my poor cats away, I move her gently) but I'm also the Creepy doll owner; I'm fully aware that a lot of people find dolls scary, so I'm kiiiiind of taking advantage of it. I mean, I would never make fun of someone with a real phobia of course, but seeing my sister being scared of my dolls is pretty hilarious :chibi

    27. I was a photographer long before I owned a BJD.
I blame my wife. :) She's a long time doll collector
and she enlisted my help in posing and photographing
some of her kids with props and I told her. "This is
fun. I just wish they posed better" and she said
"Well there are jointed dolls" :) One side effect of
me collecting BJDs is that now when she goes to a
doll show I go with her so I can get a wig or a prop
or maybe a new outfit for one of my girls. :)

    28. --The Doll Photographer
      --The Doll Artist
      --The Doll Butterfly
      --The Doll Planner

I started as a Doll Admirer for many years, but I suppose we were all that at one point. I am an artist, so I love to use my dolls as subjects when I draw or paint, and they are often the center of my photography (well... my dolls and the cats... I think I have more resin and animal pictures on my camera than I do actual human beings).

I also tend to meticulously plan their outfits, and since I don't have a lot of money, everything I buy has to match everything else for maximum mix-and-match potential. My dolls dress better than I do!

As far as being a Doll Butterfly... well, I try. I've mentioned before that I have some social issues and I'm shy. I still try to go to meet ups and socialize, though I often stay quiet and listen to everyone else talk. I don't mind. I LOVE hearing about everyone's dolls and experiences. This hobby has helped me come out of my shell a little bit, so I think that counts as a Butterfly. :)

    32. Revolving door owner and the storyteller.
All my dolls are characters from a story mostly inspired from my old roleplaying days, so I have an idea of what I am going for with them. Sometimes I buy dolls thinking they'd fit a character, but then they just.. don't work when I see them in person. Other times they do work, but I end up finding a different doll that is even better for the character. The thing is, I actually enjoy buying and selling dolls. Of course I love finding the perfect doll for my characters even more, but if I get to see and handle a good variety of dolls in the process of finding said perfect doll(s), then that is great <3

In the end it is my characters that is important to me, so even if I don't have a doll for them yet, I can still continue developing their story in my head.

I have 12 dolls I think...:sweatyeah, 12. All of them have names, ages, personalities... But currently 8 of them live at a friend`s house in another country, so I only have 5 with me. I tend to be of the opinion that what was the point in spending so much money on them for them just to sit on a shelf all the time? So while I don`t always have one with me, it is not an unusual occurrence either!
And they are totally spoiled, some more than others, though I do try to play fair... *crossed fingers*

    40. I'm a bit 'Artist'-- I really enjoy crafting things (most recently wigs), doing all my own faceups, and finding ways of bringing a doll to 'life' with my own touch. I don't have to hand-make every prop or outfit (not by a long shot!), but I have a general preference for things that are hand-crafted, by myself or others, and love putting together just the right combination of clothing pieces, props, and accessories, incorporating things I've made or altered. I like to really make my dolly world my own. But, that goes hand in hand with...

Doll Storyteller! Wanting to bring certain characters to resin 'life' is what fuels my collecting when it comes to BJDs (and sometimes when it comes to mod-able fashion/playline dolls, honestly). I wish I did more set-making and photographing so that I could really share those stories, when I put so much into developing a character, but... I'm definitely not much of a photographer. Still, all of my dolls have their personalities, likes and dislikes, sometimes stories that I've written, or characters I currently write about. (this includes more than a couple planned-for fan-dolls, because let's face it, I write a lot of fanfic alongside my original fiction. Then there's the RPs, the AUs...)

It's a nice way to get myself out of the word-realm, when my brain needs a break, and they help me visualize my characters... and also, they remind me to write, when I see these beautiful characters with hundreds of dollars and hundreds of hours of work put into them staring at me reproachfully, asking where their book is.

    54. I am an artist. I love to do faceups and clothes. Even if I buy someone else's faceups I always end up wiping them to do more. I view my dolls as canvases.
I love to take silly pics with them, but I dont have a fancy camera.
They live in mt room but sometimes I watch tv with them. I talk to them bbecause they are spirited.
I am not super careful. I prefer to love my dolls than to keep them locked away on shelves ot in drawers. But I dont drop them or paint them with sharpie or anything.

    55. The Doll Storyteller "And this one's Maria Jane, a character of mine..."
Ehehehehe.... this one is hella me! I have so many character and personality ideas for my dolls!
I like to "play" with my dolls! I want to see them, touch them, pose them, and show them off! I handle them as gently as I can, but I don't view them as so precious they aren't touchable!
I have recently found that I LOVE taking photos of my dolls! Posing them, making and finding cool sets, figuring out interesting lighting, it's sooooooo much fun for me!

    57. I'm both an Artist and a Mom. Cherry is my doll muse. I take great pleasure in making clothes and shoes and wigs and accessories for her. I also treat her like my daughter and in our photostories she even calls me Mom.

    58. I am primarily the Doll Artist. I only have one doll, a YOSD I got so that she could be my model. Miniature modeling has allowed me to try a wide range of crafts without committing to large-scale projects. I mostly sew, but also do embroidery, (try to) make wigs, shoes, jewelry and various accessories, furniture, am slowly working on a roombox. No face-ups, though - I really like the face-up my doll came to me with and feel no need to change it.
Since I got good enough at sewing for my doll to want to show off the results, I also became the Doll Photographer. Taking pictures of my doll helps improve my photography skills. I like making or finding miniature settings for her, sometimes taking her outdoors.
Surprisingly, I also became a bit of the Doll Storyteller. My doll was not meant to be a specific character, but sometimes while working on an outfit for her I think about why she would own it, and by now there is a vague impression of her "life" in my head. For example, that she is more fairy than not and is older than she looks. I like to think of myself as my doll's landlady and personal designer :)

    59. Im probably a doll artist or a doll photographer. I think it is just so much fun to add to the artistry of the dolls and changing out all the outfits/wigs/etc is so fun. To photograph them in all of their beauty and style is even better!
