What Type of Doll Owner Are You?

Jan 8, 2010

    1. [EDIT]Is there any way to add a poll even after 2 minutes? I liked my poll and would have liked to see how people voted... Grr! If I can't add it, I might just add it manually in this post, which would look kind of lame but I'd do it anyway DX ! [EDIT2]OK, I totally did. No need to post your 'votes' of the 'poll' unless you want to XD .[/EDIT]

This is kind of an open topic, for fun ^_^ . What type(s) of doll owner would you say you are? How would you characterize yourself as a doll owner? You can approach this question any way you want, in as many ways you want =P . Lots of people are more than one type, so feel free to list them all!

Would you say you're the uber-careful and cabinet-trophy type of doll owner, constantly taking kid gloves to your doll(s), cleaning them, handling them very gently and loving just putting them up for display?

Are you the artsy doll-photographer owner that loves to think of cool shoots and takes their dolls out for constant pictures?

Do you treat your dolls more like toys or personal play-friends, loving to take them with you everywhere just to have and pose them around, touch and hold them and play with their clothes or hair or whatever?

Are you a single-doll owner, doll collector, lover of tinies, buyer of uniques or limiteds, artsy 'doll-as-my-subject' type? Etc., etc.. What personal quirks, styles, or features make up what type of doll owner you think you are?

    2. Owner of 6 girls. Cabinet-trophy w/o the cabinet. I change their clothes and wigs but otherwise they sit posed on my dresser. I try to make sure their clean about once a week or so.

I like SD girls especially pretty, cute molds. I like to dress my girls kinda hipster-ish (v-neck Ts, skinny jeans, or cute shorts. ;)

    7. A little bit of everything really... I'm hyper careful with my dolls, but still I want to do artsy photos of them (though I suck at it). I do think of them as my little friends even though I don't physically carry them around with me or anything...

    8. I'm careful with mine to the point I don't leave them in dangerous places, I don't leave them in direct sunlight, etc, but I'm not hyper careful "omg I gotta take his clothes off every day so he doesn't get a stain" type nor am I the "touch his faceup and I will murder your family" type. I treat mine as decorations in my house and I also really enjoy doing faceups, modification, and customization. I take the occasional photo. I don't think of them as friends or family but I do value them highly because I want to pass them onto my kids one day. I don't tend to take them anywhere with me but I do usually bring them on trips when I can. I basically use my dolls for artistic experimentation, if that makes sense. Plus I kind of like that they freak people out. :D

    9. I'm the owner of 9 dolls (ouch, did I just say nine!?!), several of them limited, and they don't leave my house but for the occasional meeting.

at home, 4 of them (the smaller ones) stay as a basis on an open shelf in the room where I stay mostly. they don't receive any sun at all, only indirect light. I have them there with their tiny rooms and stuff and such and enjoy so much turning my chair and fiddling with them daily. I love photographing them there in their little rooms

the big dolls stay in a closet, and I randomly pick up one and sit him/her next to my computer for a few days/weeks. I like to change their clothes, pose them, take pictures, etc

all this... what kind of doll owner makes me? :sweat

    11. Dammit! I wanted to add a poll, but I took too long to type it up... gosh, can't add it anymore, what a waste :sigh: .

I'll admit, I'm not the most graceful creature on the planet, or the most gentle... ^^; . I do try to be careful with Dawn, and I think I do a reasonably good job of that. Wash my hands pretty often, clean her when any spots show up, try to keep her in order. But I know I'm the type that one day I'll pick up some greasy food, think 'DON'T touch your doll after this' and immediately put down the food and pick her up without thinking. Or take 5 minutes to sit her safely and stable-ly on a ledge, then get up and swing my arm around somehow to knock her over XD . Or rub too hard with my Magic Eraser and make a shiny spot, or get too impatient with something! So I'm sort of a careless/clumsy owner.

I'm kind of a 'Mommy owner', playing with her and cooing like she's my kid or something. As a kid myself I personified all my toys, so it's an easy transition to dote on a doll =P . Like complimenting her or giving her a pet (a beanie-lamb =P ) or apologizing when I make an accident.

I'm also an artsy/inspired doll owner. I want to do faceups, I want to do body tattoos, I want to learn to sew and design clothes and even customize wigs or maybe I'll try my hand at jewelry. Dolls are an awesome way to easily get into tons of craft hobbies X3 .

And I'm a calculating doll planner. I'm big on counting up the $$$ involved, recalculating, weighing scales. And I'm big on planning out everything about my dolls from the start, studying up and not making impulse decisions, keeping everything coordinated.

    12. I suppose Im a mix really. I like to play with my dolls, and I have one always within arms reach of me to cuddle, play with, fuss over and such. But the majority sit on my shelf looking pretty. I am careful with them, but dont have to worry about the sun since I live on the far side of my appartment building and so dont get any direct sunlight.

I also love to take their picture, but I am far from being the artsy photographer type. I try at least.

    13. Im mostly the photographer :)
Strangly, I was having this conversation with someone last night.

I don't keep my dolls out of the sun, in a cabinet, I don't care if they get stained, we can clean that. However, I refuse to mod them in any way, if they break something (ie, a finger) im just buying them a new hand and not going to try and fix it.

My dolls aren't really my children. They're my dolls, but I'll call them my kids jokingly... and I call my best friend's dolls my god-kids. Because I am around them enough and know them well enough that they could be my own dolls, but obviously they're not :p

but for the most part, it's all photography :) That's what I love about them, when I want to spend time with them, its in the form of a photo-shoot.
I do take them places at times, but again, it's mostly to find photo ops.
If it's with my friend (who's doll is in a relationship with one of mine) then we'll take them on "dates" places for fun, but again, it's just joking and mostly for photo shoots :)
and some of their adventures fall back into their character roleplays.

So I can cross catagories, but I'm definately mostly a photographer.
I got a DSLR because of dolls...so definately XD

    14. IDK, I don't really think that any of those types fit me.

I own two BJDs: DD1 and a Unoa Sist.

I guess I use them as a creative outlet. I keep them in my closet, but I look at them and hold them almost everyday. I'm not very good at taking pictures of them, but I like to do it once in a while. I'm definitely a customizer I'm not afraid to do anything with my girls, they were made to be customized.

    15. Hm, I'm a little bit of everything too..

I keep them on display in my livingroom (on a shelf that's kind of the centerpiece of the place, so yeah. xD ). I take them down to change their clothes, or just look at them, touch them and play with them. I like repainting them when I feel like I need to do it, but I'm not really a very active photographer. I bring them around to my dolly friends house, and on outdoor excavations too.

However, when other people get to handle my dolls I get SUPER antsy and kid-glovey. I would not be able to leave the room if my dolls were in the hands of a stranger, even people I trust perfectly with other things (if I'm not sure they'll treat my dolls with proper care).

I think i would fall under the "toys/friends" category though, since I'm not hyperly careful when I handle them.. X3

    16. I'm reasonably careful but they are most definitely not cabinet babies. They are in a shelving unit that keeps them out of light when I'm not using them, but I'm not paranoid. I like taking photos of them, and I also do the faceups on most of them. Definitely not kid gloves, just reasonable care. I like to play with them, and sometimes take one around with me.

    20. The doll as my subject type, she's kinda my idea of a 'toy' since I want to learn how to sew, do face-ups, use her to work on anatomical drawings and the human form as well as figure out the mechanisms to the way the body poses~ I keep her in her drawer at night cause and when I'm away cause something might happen to her, with her face-cover, wrapped in a towel so that stuff in the drawer doesn't possibly stain her! :aheartbea:

    24. I like to keep most of my dolls in the closet when I'm not home so I guess that makes them cabinet trophies for about half the day? :P

My way of playing with them is all about taking photos, doing face-ups and making them wear my horrible attempts called sewing projects. And being raised by neat-freaks of both houses I am naturally inclined to wash my hands whenever I handle them though I know I wash my hands enough anyways. I don't believe in kid gloves, period. :sweat

So... I guess that makes me a careful owner, an artsy owner, a spendthrift (because art is not an investment but should only be a hobby to me :sigh), a lover of the underdogs and a free-sizer. x)

    25. Hmmm...
Demanding: they all stand unaided 24/7, and they have to be able to pose fairly well
Loving: Each in their turn gets showered with attention - bellies lovingly rubbed, heads patted, cooing...
Obsessive: Iple House Soo Ri is my favorite sculpt. I have five of them, and four in the Gentle version.
Free and Easy: They often go outside with me to places of interest for photo shoots or photo stories. Some have been to New York, Arizona, D.C., Colorado, and California. Airports, memorials, gardens, conventions, meetups...
Biased: 90% are male (And two of the girls are male sculpt heads on female bodies!)
Multicolored: 41% are tan/realskin/gray, 22% are white, 36% are normal

I cant even imagine how some people just sit their BJDs on a shelf and leave them there*_* Mostly cause I'm constantly cuddling my boy, and if it were up to me (and it weren't creepy) I would strap him to my back so he could come every where with me :D !

    29. I seem to fall into a mixture of many (from reading other posts seems like many are). I don't own a camera, but if I did there would be too many photos of them.
My dolls sit though the day on my dresser, I am a bit paranoid about the sun so I have heavy drapes. But when I'm home one is always being carried around. Not paranoid about stains or scuffs - so far Magic Eraser cures all.
They are kinda like toys - I dress them and style their wigs, I'm always sewing something for them. Every one I buy does have a story that so far fits with the others - to bad I suck at writing.

So basically they are artistic outlet/friends/toys to me at least.

I'm a (mature) fashion design student so I'll be trying out some of my designs on the dolls and taking photo's for my portfolio. I'm forced to be a planner coz there are so many dolls and dolly things I'd love to own but as usual, the $ is the limitation.

    31. I'm a bit of several different things. Not a photographer so much as I don't have the time but a sewer, player, collector, story teller, sometimes artist. Definitely not a put them in the cabinet & only handle with kid gloves type or a keep them safely in the box either.

My dolls must be on display where I can enjoy them otherwise I have to thin the herd to where the remaining ones can be. Some are in glass cabinets while others are on open shelves. I also love creating those displays with lots of furniture & accessories so the dolls are doing something rather than just standing around. Actually that's one of the reasons that they don't get photographed much since once I have a display set up I hate to disturb it until the urge hits me to rearrange everything.

I also love to design & sew for my dolls & share them at meet-ups & with friends. I don't ordinarily take them places all the time but I will take them out to lunch with other doll friends or shopping for fabrics sometime or just outside for those all too infrequent photo shoots.

I don't tend to be a careful planner or desire to have each doll just perfect. I tend to buy from my heart & like to change clothes & wigs for different looks rather than settling on one perfect look for each doll. I'm really just a big kid as most everything I do with my dolls constitutes some type of play.

    36. My specific type is the Ball-Jointed Doll=Toy Advocate. (Although I'm still not sure if "advocate" is really the term I wanted...)

I treat my doll like a toy--I play with her. This doesn't mean that I take her everywhere with me; I never did that with my toys even when I was little! But I don't think of her as artwork, or a model, or an investment, or a piece of a collection, or a means to a social network. I sit her on the table when I have tea; I collect little accessories and props for her; and I change her outfits on a whim. I take pictures or make photostories as part of playing, not as the primary objective. When she's not being played with, she "sleeps" in her box--not because I'm worried about sunlight or dust or natural disasters, but because I like to put my things away when they're not in use. Even though she was very expensive, she doesn't get kid-gloves-type handling at all! (This doesn't mean I'm rough, though; I value my toys. n_~)

I love my dolls mostly because they're my characters- otherwise I have absolutely no interest in them XD but once I've got a character out of a doll, it's love for life! And I really enjoy writing about them and their world, so it ends up getting fairly involved. As for being a doll butterfly, I really like talking about them- or at least I would if I had any doll friends whatsoever.... :( all my friends would think I'd gone 'round the twist if I showed up going "You'll never guess what Peitan did today!!!"

    38. Absolutely an 'Other'.

I am an artists and my dolls are uber helpful in this :D

I do face ups because I can, because I prefer mine to some and because it is often less $ to do them myself. The process though takes TOO LONG- while they sit there drying and waiting for their personalities to 'come back' . They are happy with the end result as am I (usually) but the waiting o m g !

I mainly use them to create clothing with. I do not sew per say as much as create. Almost everything is a on of and I fiddle around a lot to try and get the scale right for finishing- I worry less about 'proper' and worry more about the look. I really dislike super thick waist seams on a teeny tiny. I like to make fun and pretty things that are inexpensive so people can afford to play and not just model. super fancy clothes are wonderful but take time to save for!

I photograph them less for enjoyment now (am also photographer) as I have so little time my photo shoots tend to be musts for sending the clothing out for sale. I try to have fun doing the fashion shots but find myself looking out at a dark sky all too often and improvise inside instead. I take lots of out and about shots with the camera phone- mostly;y for my own enjoyment :)
I usually have someone or several teenies with me in my purse so they can visit work with me and see my friends and do fun stuff.

The group at home all too often is nekkid or nearly so in the doll basket at home- waiting for new clothing to be made! Some special outfits are modeled and then they get to sit in one of my 9 million doll chairs (or cradles or benches or divans or or or).Little vignettes that stay until I need the model for another outfit and rip off the outfit and stuff it in the 'finished and ready to go' bin. Usually shortly after finishing the sewing on an outfit i am DONE with it and want it to go. Part of why my prices are low and why I always have so many favors as meets. The creating is the fun part for me, and then I like to see them on others dolls but mine are on to the next new creation. I have a very few fave outfits that I save- mainly for specific occasions.

I take them out a LOT. Always to dolls shows where I haul them around in ways that make it difficult to take without me knowing but easy to pick up and get a feel for.I want people to look up close and see why we love them so much. I encourage people to bend them and look under the clothes and see how they move. I warn them about the faces and show them how to gently move the heads and explain the strengths and weaknesses of the materials and molds and types.I also have several non-DOA sanctioned dolls - some of which are much more sturdy and I let people really get a feel for the poseability with those. They are soooooooo much fun to sew for and so beautiful to photograph. The more collectors the merrier! There is room for all :)

My collection has changed quite a bit due to finances (laid off for a while- then heart attack :O) but I still have the most beloved *knock wood* and am always looking to trade services for new dolls :)

They are all bright bits of sunshine always ready to remind me of the beauty and joy on this world :)

    40. I'm crazy about my dolls, and have all sizes. I think about them all the time, make up characters for them, obsess about their clothes and props, play with them, photograph them, and make elaborate plans for the new ones I plan to buy. I take good care of them and store them carefully when I'm not playing with them. I don't consider them to be my friends, children, or companions because I already have those in real life, but they are a welcome and fun diversion from the problems of life.

    41. I never thought I’d associate a personality with a Doll, when I first became interested I saw them as beautiful photographic subjects only.
However… my only doll ‘Aya’ is definitely a character unto herself and has a distinct personality. I guess now I’m a ‘photographer’, a ‘Planner’ and I’m easing into the role of ‘Doll butterfly’ too =3

    42. Having many dolls but only one msd, I have to say that I see them as works of art that I can dress and change looks to suit my mood and the seasons. I am definitely the "mommy type" owner, and love having photos of them. ( my husband takes them for me). It gives me so much pleasure just looking at her posed near where I happen to be. I have not taken her out yet, but I probably will.:fangirl:

    43. Well I'm a bit of a mixture, so 'Other' type owner I think.
I do keep mine in cabinets and out of the sun, but when they are out, I don't mind others handling them, and although careful with them, definately don't treat them with kid gloves.I can see them all and I love looking at them, as they are with me in my Office room.Plus I love going to Meets and hosting Meets too. So I love the social aspect too.
I also love doing Face ups, and can actually do them fairly quickly too.
I take photo's of them when I can ( and in fact want to try and get better this year with my photography). But I hate re-stringing.
I do find that I like to make each ones as perfect as I can get for my liking, and then they ususally stay that way with that look.Plus i like them to look quite individual, so don't tend to go for 'defaults'.
I've tried to make a few of them outfits, but I'm not particularly a seamstress, so if I have a project in mind, I know I can do most of it from face up to outfit if needed, and am quite focused when I start my projects to finish them.
As I used to Cosplay I actually like making mini versions of costumes I've ,made on a smaller scale.

    44. Well, count me between Artist and Storyteller ^^ I'm really the type of owner that makes everything herself (faceups, clothes, furniture, accessoires, wigs etc) and finds enjoyment in that. At the same time each doll represents a character in their main story, and I make photocomics to translate their behappenings.

You won't find a glass cabinet or a professional faceup near my doll!

    45. My doll collection is a mixture of art and mini "friends." This hobby is so enjoyable because it giving me something to do artistically, either by working on them, taking pictures, sewing, etc. But, I do tend to cart them around the house, to some friends' houses, they have names, some friends will refer to them by their names, etc.

I don't really write stories for them, but I sort of make up their personalities as I go along, and as each new doll comes in, although there isn't really a theme among them.

    46. What about the 'aspiring to be everything' newbie doll owner? I think that would be my category...so I guess I'd fall under 'other'

I'm working on learning to do faceups, and blushing, and would love to try and do modding at....some point. I;ve bought materials to try some scarring...
I love to talk about dolls with Anyone willing...but around here theres not too many. I'm excited to make things for them.
I want to do photo shoots, just working on getting them ready and posable to do that. Since I don't have a decent digital camera I will be using my 35mm. I love film.... just hate not developing it myself but I no longer have a dark room...... I don't really treat my dolls like friends.... but I call them my roomates. (if only they would help pay rent!!)

      So I guess I'm a blend of:
--The Doll Photographer, The Doll Artist,
--The Doll Storyteller (All my dolls are Character. though only the most recent two are for characters I've had long before dolls. Every doll from here on out though will be to house a character I have)
--The Doll Butterfly (but theres no meets I can go to)

I don't think I'd call myself a favortists, but I am pretty picky on what sculpts I like or would remotely want to own....And I'm a horrible planner. The only doll I really Planned for is my Dollmore girl I'm still waiting on.
And even though I'll soon have a collection of three dolls and two floating heads I'm still a doll admirer....though I think everyone still is. I'm constantly on here going through pictures and being amazed at what everyone is doing with their dolls.

    47. I started with dolls to photograph them, I don't 'collect' them as such because I can't afford all the dolls I'd like. I love how I've met new friends through dolls, so I guess I am a photographer and butterfly! Loved reading all your posts :)

    48. I'm lots of various things like so many of us are. With 22 dolls I think I can definitely call myself a collector XD, though each doll has to be one of my characters, so I'm also a storyteller and a planner. Photography is something I also got into as a result of the hobby, after seeing so many gorgeous photos, so I'd say I'm that too! XD
I had originally just wanted the dolls from an artistic sense - wanting to create new outfits for them all the time. But over the years I've got into modding, and worked with friends to get the right faceups and wig styles for my dolls. I have more specific concepts in my head now for each doll, when I first got a doll I wanted her to be versatile in looks, but now that's not really the case.

As for how I treat them, they all sit in various places around my lounge room, so that I can admire them daily, and pick them up and play with them as I please.

    50. Would you say you're the uber-careful and cabinet-trophy type of doll owner, constantly taking kid gloves to your doll(s), cleaning them, handling them very gently and loving just putting them up for display?
      - I handle my boy very carefully, but I'm no cabinet-trophy kind of girl. I also handle them lovingly, but most of the time, I have to watch out for myself! My boy is a finger pincher!

Are you the artsy doll-photographer owner that loves to think of cool shoots and takes their dolls out for constant pictures?
      - Haha, no way! I don't even own a camera! As much as I'd like to be, I also don't have the time! D:

Do you treat your dolls more like toys or personal play-friends, loving to take them with you everywhere just to have and pose them around, touch and hold them and play with their clothes or hair or whatever?
      - I treat my dolls like personal play-friends/imagination children. I love them to no end and I definitely would take them everywhere! Darren is always ALWAYS around me and I'm constantly touching and playing with him whether he likes it or not. xD;

Are you a single-doll owner, doll collector, lover of tinies, buyer of uniques or limiteds, artsy 'doll-as-my-subject' type? Etc., etc.. What personal quirks, styles, or features make up what type of doll owner you think you are?
      - As of right now, I'm a single-doll owner, but for sure, it's not gonna stay like that at all! Gosh, I'm so addicted! Whenever I look at my boy, it's like falling in love all over again. He's so beautifully gorgeous and everyone else's dolls are so beautifully gorgeous. I treat all dolls with love and care, like a mother would treat her children. I guess that definitely makes me the Doll Mommy! xD

    51. I mostly collect boy dolls and I take them with me occasionally. I like to knit for them and I would love to learn how to sew. Most of them sit on my yarn cabinet, but I do have one in the family room and one is now living with my daughter because her husband loves him. Although I am very careful with them I am not obsessed with them getting broken. They are to be enjoyed and loved.

    52. I have 2 ABJD dolls--both SD size, and they are sitting on an "inspiration" shelf in my living room with 3 other MSD size non-asian BJDs. I love to sew for all of my dolls, and the fashions I make can be tailored to fit my BJDs as well as many other dolls in my collection--which are primarily vintage/modern vinyl and hard plastic fashion dolls. Dolls are a very hands on hobby for me, so I'm trying to learn to do face ups and experimenting with wig-making. I came to BJDs after becoming fascinated with the articulation of vintage Dollikins (those big girls from the '50s) and contemporary 1/6 dolls (many by Jason Wu among others). I guess a huge theme that has emerged in my variegated collecting (I have a couple hundred dolls of all different kinds) is articulation--love to pose and photograph them in the clothing I make. It was a just a matter of time until my interest turned to ABJDs, and for a very long time I didn't buy one due to the cost and limited availability. Now there are many companies to choose from and it's really easy to get them, so I'm finding them increasingly irresistible!

    53. Somewhere between Storyteller, and Mommy. :D

      Hopefully, soon-to-be Photographer, too! :D!

I currently have one BJD, just an MSD.

I plan to have a maximum of 5. Two SDs, two MSDs, and one Tiny. I plan things out a lot...

    54. The Doll Mommy!

I just got my First doll and I keep making him things and playing with his hair and clothes. Last night I was so tired I carried him to bed and fell asleep before I could put him down. I woke up with him still in my arms, my head resting on his little one. I'm so glad I didn't drool!

    55. I'm a pretty heavily-oriented photography type, for certain. One of the main reasons I began looking into the BJD world was actually photography, and it's still the reason/excuse I cite to... well, family members who wouldn't quite understand any other reason.

At the same time, I'm also a storyteller type--my one girl, Euphemia, was a character well before she was solidified in resin, and she serves as my muse for all of the stories I write now, especially regarding the character she's meant to flesh out.

I may also be developing into a bit of a doll mommy... x3; Scary movies are much more fun while cuddling a resin kid.

    56. Doll Storyteller first and foremost, as my resin crew are all based on (or have inspired) original characters; I'm working on becoming the Doll Artist - I like doing faceups - and the Doll Photographer - I still suck -_-;.

While my collecting has hit a wall (almost literally, I'm out of space ^^;;; ), I am a collector by nature and my crew grew A LOT last year . . .

    57. I am deiniately the other because I am a bit of all those.

I do have cabinet dolls, but mosty I play with them. I love making for my dolls, and then of course I need to take pics of them. I am also a more, more dolls person but then resell to get ones I want more.

I guess the only one I haven't claim to is the story telling but I would love to have a try at this.

Basically I am just doll mad.

    60. Urhm... as far as the poll options go I believe I'd be all of them with the exception of the favorititist and the admirer.

My dolls are my characters, my canvas, my clothing models, my photography models, my story tellers, my precious things, my wonderful hobby, and my collection. I try to be as hands on and artsy with my dolls as I possibly can. This means learning how to do my own face-ups, make my own clothes for them, work on pictures, etc...
