Just For Fun What sculpt do you think looks the most BJD-ish of all BJDs?

Aug 6, 2018

    1. Is there a sculpt you'd point to that seems like your basic bjd? A sculpt that isn't simple in any way, but something you think is what most people would think of as a typical bjd?

What sculpt do you think looks the most BJD-ish of all BJDs?

      Have fun! :kitty2

    2. Luts Bory is “the” iconic sculpt to me. Not sure why! But you can’t see that face and not think “bjd”!

    3. For me it's the Volks 4-sisters :whee:

    4. For me, it would be the Luts El sculpt. I joined the hobby back when they were everywhere (the first BJD I ever saw online was an El as well). And to me, he just has the typical BJD 'look'.

    5. Those are 3 very different questions!
Volks 4 sisters dolls are the dolls I think of when I think of bjd in general but since they aren’t Standard Models anymore and because the company has always been considered in the mid to higher price range, I don’t think they are ‘basic’ to most people.
      Most basic - Rs Mei
Most typical or common in photos etc - Fairyland Minifee Chloe, but again with her price tag, I don’t think she’s so ‘basic’.

    6. It’s more than likely just because they’re the first ones i ever saw online, but the most bjd-ish to me are any of the bluefairy dolls! Especially because of the wide eyes and pretty, simple faces

    7. Back in the day, CP, from what I've heard. Now? Fairyland. Funny thing is, I'm not really into either. Oh well.

    8. I don't think of any particular sculpt being as the epitome of the BJD-look, because there are many sculpts that are no longer being made that I think of as iconic BJD-look, but are not really basic anymore (as in probably, a lot of the people in the hobby now, don't own any of them). However, I think that Volks, Fairyland/CP, Luts, (and a few others, but these are more "old-school") are still making very standard, utmost-BJD-looking sculpts.

Edit: To clarify, the ones still making sculpt that have giant headed dolls, and larger than life eyes (by real-life humanoid-standards).

    9. For me, the classic would be a Fairyland Chloe since she looks so common.

      • Cake Cake x 1
    10. Even though they're not around anymore (but luts picked them up! YAY!!!) CustomHouse dolls and of course the classic CP dolls, El and Shiwoo. You couldn't look at more than two threads back in the day without seeing El or Shiwoo. Lol I was quite sick of them first a while, but I wish they'd come back!

    11. I always think of the Dream of Doll (DOD) sculpts especially their iconic company photos. When I discovered BJDs through my sister those dolls became the symbol of the “complete package” of what a BJD was. Stylized face, full detailed outfit and accessories, complete with styled wig and doll like makeup.

    12. Agree with @Anante, Dream of Doll is so popular because their photos were even used on purses and such. People cosplayed their full-sets, you can buy those costumes easily.

So for a certain amount of people I'd go with DoD, for the rest I would say some basic MNF Chloe like Andreja made popular.

    13. >< to me all nude bjds are "basic" ones before we blush and customize them.
I never saw a model being more basic than another...
To my eyes they all stand equal.

      • Cake Cake x 1
    14. I'd also say Luts El. Back in the day, when I joined DoA, he was super popular. And even now, I think it's a great doll. Versatile face sculpt, nice body. Androgynous looks. Easy to style. Unlimited.
Moreover, Luts didn't make it hard or even impossible to buy their dolls.

    15. Volks SD10 4 sisters definitely holds that association for me!

    16. I must agree that Bluefairy is what I think of, namely their "classic" single-jointed bodies.
They do not go to any trouble to hide or engineer the joints to be particularly subtle or natural looking.
The elbows have a visible ball joint, the knees have a visible ball joint, each of the hips are a big round ball sitting out front of the doll's backside... and so on.
I feel like if you were to try to sculpt a BJD, that body exemplifies the basic requirements.
Their faces are gentle but fairly stylized, a fine middle ground between the most stylized and more realistic sculpts.
When I think of the most basic "doll I expect to see in any given thread" though, I'd agree with RS Mei and MNF Chloe, or in tiny threads, PKF Ante. They just seem to be everywhere, so maybe they are appealing as a basic, likeable canvas onto which a lot of possible personalities can be painted.

    17. I think for myself, most of the old Delf sculpts by Luts give me that really prominent bjd feel, specifically Lishe, I feel like I saw that sculpt everywhere when I first joined the hobby.

El and Shiwoo are up there along with If and Soony. They have those enormous eyes with really long, sloped, pointy noses :3nodding:

    18. I think the first BJD I ever saw a picture of was Volks Lucas, and his face is very iconic to me for that reason. There are some companies with very strong aesthetics that I feel represent very different but classic styles of BJDs: Dream of Doll, Soom, Volks, Switch, Migidoll, Elfdoll, and Iplehouse especially.

    19. I agree with thinking of the CP sculpts, DoD, and Volks Lucas/School A as iconic bjds to me.

    20. Luts Lishe, or Volks 4 Sisters. Maybe these seem iconic to me because they were some of first sculpts I saw when I started to be interested in BJDs.

    21. I always think of volk, cp and d.o.d as the classics, and a little bit of custom house too.

Sculpts that were all the rage and the most seen dolls were the volks Lucas/Chris family of sculpts, the d.o.d msd dolls and of course cp el and lishe.

      That’s what i think of when i think of classic/basic bjd’s

    22. I'd have to agree with Dream of Doll dolls. They were the first company I looked into when I started getting interested in BJDs.

But for a specific sculpt I'd have to say that Volks Lieselotte comes to mind.

      • Cake Cake x 1
    23. CP Delf El. When I joined the hobby in 2008, I felt like the only person who didn't own an El. Bonus if they have a fur wig and wear only black and white clothing!

I'd also say a lot of older Volks sculpts definitely have that classic BJD look, considering they were the first BJDs as we known them. Today for a lot of newbies, it's probably Fairyland that draws them in the most considering their popularity, but I think them more as a new wave of classics, if that makes any sense.

    24. I think its Minifee Chloe

I see her everywhere and I cant tell her apart from other fairyland dolls but she is beautiful and in my eyes, she is the poster child for the word BJD

She is who I see when I look at the BJD tags and even non doll people sometimes I find them using her picture as profile picture

      • Cake Cake x 1
    25. This.

They're as iconic in that "old-school Anime-style BJD" way as anything I can think of.

    26. All the older Volks sculpts, old Luts/CP Delfs, and Dream Of Doll dolls for sure!

      • Cake Cake x 1
    27. As I attempted to figure out my own answer to this question, Bory is the first specific sculpt that popped into my head. I don't know why, either. I don't even have one, though I guess he is fairly popular and sort of generically cute.

    28. I agree completely about CP El and Lishe - and also that the relative accessiblity of Luts dolls in the earlier years helped them become so iconic. Good point, evie the kid!

    29. Probably, I'd have to go with the Volks Four-sisters, since I'm definitely from the old-school days. My first bjd was an Elf El, so he still seems to be too distinct to me... but because there were so many Els, I can totally understand him being kind of iconic. And I can see FL Choe for those a bit less "old-school".

    30. For me it's also the Volks Four-Sisters and CP El. And also Volks Lucas/Chris/F16 <3

    31. For me, it has to be the Volks 4-sisters, hands down...that perfect anime, large-eyed and sweet-faced aesthetic absolutely had me swooning for years and years. And it seemed that every single one I saw was so stunningly unique depending on how their owners styled them, which is so iconically BJD. But they were already quite difficult to come by when I entered the hobby, and I was thoroughly intimidated by the Volks lottery system and their price. Thanks to the second hand market however, I now own both an open-eyed and sleeping version...my dreams from all those years ago came true!

    32. Any Luts or Fairyland sculpts imo- back when i joined the hobby in 2007 or so they were the only widely known companies in the swedish community <3

    33. I have to agree with majority of the comments! Luts dolls SCREAMS BJD for me. The face, the body... everything.

    34. I don't have just one sculpt, but have to agree with the others who mentioned older Luts/CP, DoD, and Volks sculpts. Many of those sculpts are kind of the epitome of the "A" that use to be a part of ABJD.

    35. This exactly. When I read the title of this thread I instantly visualized 4-sisters but I don't own any of them. I do have an El that I bought during my first year in the hobby and he's just so "himself" it's hard to see him as part of that iconic whole. I think a lot of Els are that way- instantly recognizable but very different from each other. Maybe that's why they're iconic. Being able to make a doll look exactly how you want while the sculpt has enough presence to still be itself is kinda what it's all about to me.

    36. I'd have to say resinsoul Mei. I haven't been in the hobby that long but she was one of the first I wanted probably because resinsoul is a company most suggested to beginners. Even as my taste evolve, I still love her.

    37. for me the F16 volks
in generally the old volks body

    38. Volks Nono! She's one of the early sculpts I remember seeing. And Volks Rio too.. and Custum House Choa, she was so pretty! The sculpts and bodies were completely different from any doll I'd ever seen.

    39. I think we all agree on the classic Luts/Volks/DOD. Unoas also have that classic BJD look, and Minifee Chloe.

I'm gonna throw a more current curveball into the mix. Personally, I think Iplehouse YID Rexy has a very classic BJD 'doll-like' face, with her larger eyes and dainty chin. (though her body is very with the times with its va-va-voom curves!)

    40. Echoing all of the classic Volks and Luts dollies, plus Unoa Sist, Bluefairy Tommy, Iplehouse YID Lion...

    41. I can't recall what doll I first saw that made me research into BJDs further..but I feel a lot of people I talked to to back then (2008) seemed to have a Volks or Luts doll. I don't think there is any particular company or sculpt though that screams I'm a BJD, because well they all kinda do..lol

      • Cake Cake x 1
    42. Bobobie Sprite has "the BJD look" to me.

      • Cake Cake x 1
    43. I think I'd have to answer with the first BJD I ever saw. Soom's Sabik is what first drew me into the hobby waaaaaay back when I was a college goer and couldn't begin to afford to get a doll. Something about how he looks like anime character just realistic enough to exist in our world screams BJD to me.

      • x 1
      • Cake Cake x 1
    44. I have to go with my first doll, Resinsoul Sui on the Tang body. He's got more mature-ish features for a 1/4 scale boy, his body is very masculine, he's on the taller end of the 1/4 size range, Resinsoul offers a ton of resin colors and customization options, and he's affordable (mine in dark tan was under $200). Plus, since he's the Sui head, he's got cute elf ears! Who doesn't love a good pair of elf ears?~

      • Cake Cake x 1
    45. For modern BJDs I'd say any anime Japanese type character doll, but really, I can't forget the predecessors such as the french fashion ladies, jumeau, or Schoenhuts, etc... the composition bodies of 120 or so years ago are amazing when you think about it :)

      • Cake Cake x 1
    46. Old CP Luts and some of the earliest Volks sculpts! Those are the iconic faces I remember seeing when coming across information about BJDs for the first time. Funnily enough I only got into the hobby in 2015 but still those sculpts seem to be the poster children to me. :XD:

      • Cake Cake x 1
    47. Dollshe Hound. Like there’s several different sculpts that I THINK of for looking classically BJD but most of them are just because they were either really early or really popular at various times so you’d see them everywhere (Fairyland Chloe, a lot of the earlier CP sculpts like El, Lishe, Shiwoo, and Soony. Volks four sisters, Tae/Anais, etc)
So those are more association for me than LOOKING somehow specifically BJD. And for me that looks like a balance of sculpt styles, since there are so, so many. Dollshe Hound is angular and stylized, but also relatively realistic. He’s a classic and I dunno, something about that face in particular says BJD to me.

      • x 2
    48. Iplehouse Foma Yui. I would like 3 of them, each face up option. I adore this sculpt. It personifies....everything.

    49. For me, it's definitely the older Volks sculpts:
      -Nono
      -Rio
      -Nana/ four sisters
      -Lucas

      And I love them ALL!!!!:drool

If I had to pick one, I'd say that the Nono wins.

    50. If you're putting emphasis on the doll look, definitely Four Sisters. They have that prototypical BJD look to them - like something that wouldn't look out of place with blonde ringlets, pseudo-Victorian clothes, and an amateurish faceup, that you'd see in an old GLB or an old sculpting manual. Resinsoul Mei also has that particularly doll-ish feel, imo - their sculpts all have that simplistic vibe and similar proportions, and you could see one out of the corner of your eye and know it's a doll and not a person.

I'd include Dollshe Venitu, most Unoa 1/4 girls, and Zaoll Luv as a different kind of basic - less of a beginner's doll and more of a versatile base for customizing. They aren't iconic/expensive like Lieselotte, or as ubiquitous as Chloe or Dia boys were, but I've seen enough variations on all of them to know that they lend themselves to... well, whatever you put your mind to. They're what comes to mind when I think about where the hobby is now - individualized beautiful, detailed art projects! :aheartbea

    51. Luts dolls in general pop to mind--definitely the first company I would direct a non-bjd person to as an introduction to a bjd. They are quite classic in appearance and strike a nice balance between stylized and realistic. They've also always seemed like a great canvas--neither too simple nor too detailed--which helps make a good, solid doll doll that is still versatile and interesting. For specific sculpts, I would probably choose Howl and Annette. :kitty2

    52. Any of the volks, they're so JBJD! Very annami in style.

    53. A lot of the older Volks, Luts and Alice in Labyrinth sculpts. They look more doll like than realistic like a lot of newer sculpts. Particularly the Volks four sisters girls and Nono, Luts Delf Lishe and Soony and AiL Alice and Betram.

    54. Definitely any of the older Volks or Luts sculpts. When I think about basic BJD-ish style, I always picture an SD doll with big eyes, triangular face, and a quite massive body. It looks more anime like than realistic like.

      • x 1
    55. For me an icon of BJDism is Volks Masha, my first love :D In general, Volks dolls are classic in the hobby I think. On the other hand it's amasing how long jorney dolls' esthetics made in last few years...

    56. :P They're two of the same

    57. Well, yeah. But there has been a big diversion in style. So I'm treating them kind of separate.

    58. Echoing a lot of people with early Volks, especially the Four Sisters sculpt.

Also for some reason luts kid delf cherry

    59. Aw! What a sweet thread!! Of course, early Volks!! I think we all agree they were the first of the modern bjd aesthetic. They literally set the standards for eye and wig size and sizes of dolls.
But, I also think of the first dolls I remember seeing when there were much fewer companies. The first French resin dolls; Narindoll Narae, Supia Roda and Rosy, Limhwa Half Elf. Also, the early Dollmore dolls, like Ipsae and Bella Auden. Oh!! And, Custom House Mina - because of the Doll Master movie!!!!!

    60. Volks Lucas definitely makes me think "basic". And he has stood the test of time VERY well! I feel the same way about Luts El and Lishe, which it seems EVERYONE had when I started this hobby!

Dollzone Yuu, Iplehouse Soo Ri, Elfdoll Soah, Dollshe Hound, Custom House Choa and DoD Too and Bee-A bring back those early memories as well. I sort of think of them as "flagship" dolls for their companies. There were so many, all so distinctive at the time!

In my house, though, I think of Hiro (Volks Link), as the most "basic". He was my first BJD. I am more familiar with him than any other doll in the house. I recently brought home a "new" BJD, a Volks FCS F-21 boy, who was second hand and well loved, and I felt instantly comfortable with him because I know the old single jointed Volks SD13 boy body so well.
