What is your job and other hobbies?

Jun 11, 2019

    1. Hi there! I work in medical records, scanning patient's paperwork onto our online system.
I haven't taken my doll to work yet, but my coworkers have asked to see them, so I probably will.

For hobbies, I like to play video games, read, sew, write poetry, watch anime and do a little bit of digital art.

    2. I work in a historical house museum as a tour guide, in retail at a bakery, and writing ad copy for an antique doll dealer. In my spare time, I do historical costuming. It comes handy, as there are always scraps of silk or lace to make things for my dolls (thanks, local discount fabric store, for enabling me to actually afford high-quality materials!).

Plus, I like feeling connected to them that way- looking at a doll and thinking, "Oh right, that's the fabric from my green silk ball gown, or my red velvet spencer jacket, or my Victorian chemise." They have a part of me with them, and their clothes are reminders of happy moments in my life.

    3. I'm a costume designer and theatre professor. I enjoy playing and modding video games, watching horror movies, collecting perfume, and playing with my cats. I'm thinking of taking up gardening.

    4. Cool! I see a few engineers and a few EEs!
I also went to school for Electrical Eng. and currently working as an Instrumentation Engineer. It involves selecting, sizing, and buying items such as measurement equipment and valves.

I did bring my YoSD to my last job once and I don't think anyone noticed because we were all antisocial creatures who hide in cubicles ._. People would totally notice at my current job tho haha. :XD:

Many people at work know of my costume wig collection and some even know I cosplay. But I haven’t thought of bringing up BJDs before haha.

    5. I have been disabled since 2001. Besides bjds my hobbies are collecting haunted dolls and other haunted items, the Occult/Paranormal, collecting non haunted non bjd dolls, reading, computers, listening to music, horror movies.

      • x 4
    6. I'm a flooring specialist/ hopeful product designer (college has been put on hold because of life and money atm!) I enjoy video games, doing art and making things :XD:

    7. Lots of fellow anime enthusiasts here :)

I work in HR at a bank. I wouldn’t bring my dolls to my workplace - I own SD-sized dolls and normally commute via public transportation so I’d be too afraid of breaking them while commuting! But I’m currently working from home due to COVID so they’re technically at work with me now ;)

My non-doll hobbies are anime, running, and baking. I also watch a lot of J-drama.

    8. I'm a freelance writer-- while I've sold more pieces of nonfiction than fiction, my single biggest payday (so far) was for a pair of fiction pieces. Fiction's what I prefer, but I've got a foot in the door writing about autism as an autistic person.

My biggest hobby is... also writing, if you count fanfiction writing as hobby and non-fanfiction writing as work. I also love drawing, gaming (tabletop and video, with D&D being my very favorite), cross-stitching, baking, reading... and collecting a lot of types of things (dolls and toys, books, dice, enamel pins, notebooks, stationery, anything with a cat on it, anything with a unicorn on it, anything with an octopus on it... and so on)

    9. I'm an art student with a strong interest in reptiles and amphibians (not to the hobbies extent but I do have 2 beardies).

My hobbies generically include drawing, but I really like D&D as well as video games...I'm slowly getting back into some hobbies as i near the end of my undergraduate degree.

    10. I work in an accounting department, so nothing related with dolls :XD: I would never bring my dolls to job because my coworkers would laugh at me. My other hobbies are reading, cooking, photography, anime...

    11. I work at a print shop doing design and running wide-format printers. I’ve brought smaller dolls a couple times and I keep a couple Barbies on a shelf above my desk. I also have a squirrel collection and there are other odd things on my desk so all my coworkers know I’m a weirdo kid at heart :)

Oh! Almost forgot- Hobbies include singing in my car, doodling, and playing Animal Crossing and the Sims. I’ve started needle felting and I enjoy that a lot but I have to be in the right mood to do it.

    12. I’m an office lady. :XD: That’s as far as I go wrt talking about my job. I’d probably bring my dolls to the office, but only if I were planning to take them somewhere else afterward. I would not let anyone touch them, unless they washed their hands with dish soap first. We have dish soap in the kitchen, it can be done.

I recently learned how to loom knit. I also like drawing, writing, and video games! :D

    13. I am a semi-retired reading specialist teacher. I was substitute teaching until the pandemic and then my husband and I decided I should stay home. Now I take care of our zoo - 3 cats, 2 dogs, 3 parrots, 7 koi, and an aquarium of tropical fish.

My hobbies are camping, reading - mostly urban fantasy, and crafts including needle felting and drawing. I got interested in bjds while looking at stuff for finishing a doll house.

    14. I'm a student and planning to apply for fashion design for university. Too bad I don't have any income right now so I'll just wait until I actually earn real money and buy more dolls!! It is sad that my friends at school have no idea about BJD, so I just share my dolls with other BJD players online!

My hobbies are designing, drawing, sewing, cooking, and I wish I can travel around the world one day

    15. I’m a university student, I don’t have a job. (I’d die—DIE I say!— if I attempted to work in addition to school) My hobbies are reading manga, sewing, staring lifelessly into my phone as I zone out into oblivion, watching documentaries, and trying whatever craft/art form looks fun.

    16. I am currently a high schooler with a part time job as a busser at a chain restaurant. I'm graduating in 2022 and hope to pursue a major in Chinese business/international business.

Hobbies: reading, drawing, crafting (just starting), watching anime, and gaming (when I feel like it).

    17. I'm a freelance illustrator pursuing my BFA. I am big into Japanese street fashion--too many expensive hobbies! Video games are a great pastime for me as well.

    18. I am studying programming :) My life revolves around pets and the occult. I love to do crafts, so that too. I also like reading and houseplants (and gardening). I collect and prepare skulls and I hope I could learn to do taxidermy at some point, but I don't have time for it just now.

    19. I'm a law student and work part-time for a debt collecting company.
My other hobbies include reading (currently I'm really into Realm of the Elderlings), going out for a walk, learning how to knit and meeting my friends - so nothing unusual there.

    20. I'm non-clinical medical staff in the US, coordinating specialist referrals and authorizing radiology exams. That's as glamorous, interesting, and useful as I can make it sound!

I love Pokemon, comics, BTS, and (mostly horror) movies. Once upon a time I was heavily into film studies, and now only merely maintain a façade of any analytical skills I once had.

    21. I am a payroll manager and HR controller. So basically the "numbers side" of HR ;).

My other big interests are D&D (DM for multiple groups), photography and lolita fashion.

    22. I'm a resident doctor specializing in audiology and working in an outpatient clinic. It's been a long journey to get where I am today (8 years, to be exact), but my job can be very rewarding.

My other hobbies are photography, gaming, and occasionally reading. I've actually been thinking about getting into crochet, too.

    23. there's so many interesting jobs here - it really proves that you cannot judge someone based on what they're doing during their 9-5.

I'm a freelance illustrator, primarily working in character and prop design. drawing is my job, but also my hobby, as well as antiques collecting and studying the history of occultism and folk mythology. fun stuff!

    24. Wow definitely a ton of different careers.

I’m a special needs teacher in an elementary school. I also love playing video games, hiking, playing tennis, baking, and also decorating/redesigning things in my home if that’s a hobby.
I haveeeee brought my dolls to school before because I used them for opinion writing. I had to bring in a collection and decide which is the favorite. Interesting enough, the kids thought the BJDs were scary looking even thought I brought in the sweetest looking ones. I guess they’re used to Mattel LOL.

    25. I'm a librarian! Other than reading, my hobbies are fanfiction, video games, cooking, and running. I ran a 25k this year. Maybe it's an excuse to listen to podcasts, which I also do a lot lol...

    26. I work in hematology as a medical technologist in a hospital (basically I do certain sorts of laboratory tests for patients)! My other hobbies are listening to podcasts, collecting (i.e. things other than dolls like nendoroids, manga, etc.), am getting back into reading, dancing (for fun mostly and just to be active), and I also really love playing video games (am currently playing a great indie game on my Nintendo switch called Hollow Knight)~

    27. Ooohhh, I love those books, I'm a big Robin Hobb fan too. A few of my dolls are even inspired by her books! <3

    28. I'm an apprentice for a normal office job, nothing exciting. My hobbies next to dolls are my geckos, gaming (mmorp's and LoL) and drawing. :3

    29. I'm a math teacher with a crafting addiction. :)

    30. I work at achildrens daycare (Kindergarten) and I would never ever take a doll there. Children are monsters when it comes to "toys" like that.

Other then that I'm a big fantasy and roleplay nerd. And I love to draw.

    31. I am an translator in manufacturing company. My hobbies are knitting, crochet, sewing and I love reading so much!

    32. I'm an IT in game company. In my planet (company and home town where I live) no-one know what is BJD :D , even if they see you hold an BJD in your arm, you will scare them

      • x 2
    33. I'm permanently disabled, so I don't really go out for work. I've had a couple of part-time jobs... one, you couldn't have any personal items on your desk, so no dolls there. The other was really cool, and I was able to bring a doll to sit in my cubicle, which I did a few times.
Currently, I'm (very slowly) working on starting a small jewelry business - probably on Etsy, not sure on that part. Since the majority of my "job" is in the home, of course my dolls are here. But since I have to venture out occasionally in the course of the "job", to get supplies, and sometimes I take a doll with me on these runs, then I suppose you could say I still take my dolls to work with me from time to time.

My other hobbies, besides jewelry-making, are playing with my cats; watching videos on weird history, defunct amusement parks, CreepyPasta, crafting, and music videos; and "virtually" hanging out with friends (they're all long distance).

    34. I’m a newly-graduated veterinarian currently working at a companion animal practice.

My other hobbies include writing (though this links to the BJD hobby since my writing involves doing so which my best friend and I’s characters we have in doll form), taking care of my herd of cats and other critters, video games, Japanese animation, a little bit of cosplay, and collecting natural artifacts (skulls, rocks, fossils, bones, etc.)

    35. I am also in the gaming industry and i work at a Ubisoft owned company on an unannounced title :3 due to corona we have been working from home since March 2020 and I only just bought my first doll in July of 2020. I’m sure I could take my doll to work cause everyone is really cool. A lot of people on the team like to decorate their desk with figurines and other collectibles. It’s really cool to see!

For other hobbies I love drawing and hope to make it my career one day. I also play video games a lot! Someone mentioned they play too much overwatch? Me too... haha!

    36. I work as a preschool paraeducator, we have plenty of toys & dolls to play with at school so I do not bring my own there! One of the bonus work perks is getting to play with legos and dinosaurs and dolls with others who unironically enjoy it (ie 4 year olds)

My other big hobby is lolita fashion, I also enjoy sewing, arts & crafts, and video games. I collect other types of dolls too!

    37. I am studying education and environmental control. I finish in May and I already start the practices. I like to collect sand, shells, and marine samples. The samples and shells can tell a lot about marine ecosystems.
My hobbies are drawing, writing, and BJD. I enjoy so much with videogames specially Final Fantasy, i'm a veeeeery big fan. I love RPG games.
I have a blog with some stories but it's in complete spanish.

    38. I'm a software engineer, for a telemedicine company. Since I'm down in the engineering department, it's a bunch of nerds around, and I keep a bunch of nerd stuff at my desk, but no dolls. (More like anime and pop figures.)

As far as other hobbies go, I've been cosplaying longer than I've been collecting dolls. :) I haven't been competitive in it for years, though, and just do costumes that I find fun to make and wear, rather than try to do things that will win me prizes or get me attention. I actually do a few costumes that hardly anyone ever recognizes, but I love wearing them (and it's awesome when people do recognize them). That's definitely another expensive hobby, too, since I like to use really good materials. I do mermaiding, too, but in the interest of not adding a third expensive hobby I stick to the less expensive fabric tails there.

    39. I'm disabled! I'm in the process of trying to get a little bit of work tutoring English online + getting through my country's disability system (which is based on percentage you can't work), so fingers crossed both things work out so I can actually have an income.

My other hobbies include reading (literature & poetry), researching (ancient history & religions), writing, lolita fashion, fiddling around with my neocities, gaming, cooking and then eating delicious foods, tea, and skincare.

    40. I'm in Admin department at my company's (we make power tools)corporate headquarters, which means I deal with anything from mice getting in the office and the break room fridge dying to updating company policies and procedures to be compliant with various regulations and developing training materials based on said policies and procedures. I don’t take my dolls to work. My desk is generally covered in papers and only barely has space for my computer and a plant. Other hobbies include gardening (just started some flower seeds and have a few with baby plants!), reading, and lolita fashion. I have a dog too.

    41. I was a horse trainer. It was mostly Western pleasure and hunter under saddle horses I worked with. I also did Wrangler work in movies and TV shows with horses. I got hurt and had to retire as I hurt my hand. Couldn't work with the babies anymore. I still have horses. (Appaloosa and a Tennessee walker ) Now I'm a writer . I write Sci Fiction and urban fiction stories and working on my first novel about Dragons comes out this fall.
My hobbies are : I troop with the 501st and the Rebel Legions raising money for children's charities, (Lots of Star Wars Costumes) But I'm a huge fan of Steampunk and Anime (Miss going to Conventions ). We have a huge collection of books in our library. We have a gaming room with lots of board games. We as a family play D&D, SWTOR and WOW. Sewing, Crafts, Costumes, and painting minis.

    42. I work for a university department that does international programs solely for other institutions, companies, and local goverments in other countries (outside USA). I really like being in contact with people from all over the world, so it's really gratifying.

My main hobby is Korean music, since way back when I used to work in a shop with a Korean owner. As such, our store music was nothing but kpop that he chose. That was over 10 years ago, and the rest is history. Kpop was so obscure when I first got into the music, I'm still in shock it's become so mainstream.

Aside from that I really enjoy Lolita fashion, as well as travel.

    43. Hi! I'm an ex- shut-in who got a job in the front lines at a dental root canal place last week! Vaccine to be obtained soon but it is nerve wracking right now dealing with patients.

My hobbies are sewing clothes, styling wigs (dolls and people), and playing gacha games :)

    44. Hello! I work as an analytical chemist, and my other hobbies include gaming, my two dogs (a cocker spaniel poodle mix and a shih tzu coton de tulear mix), watching TV shows, and comic books (Make mine Marvel!). I'm also interested in learning to play the guitar, to sew, and other crafty things. I used to be a dancer and singer and, who knows, when this pandemic is over I might pursue those again for fun.

    45. Hello! I work in a procurement department in a US MNC company as my day job and juggling a part-time degree course. Aside from my BJD collection, my second hobby is boxing. I love hitting people and getting hit. Fret not, my fighting only happens in the ring. I don't encourage fighting in the streets because you are putting your life at stake. So don't fight outside! When I graduate from my degree I might buy myself a DIY computer to play flight simulation 2020 to explore the world. A virtual getaway! I miss the voice of inflight announcement.

I'm glad to hear that you are doing things you enjoy and not let your disability dictate your life. I hope you get your desired income soon. Perhaps you could be a freelance motivational speaker for those in need.

    46. I am in administration (COVID job shakeups made me no longer sure what my actual title is, but I am in training to become the next Office Manager) for a Metrology Calibration lab. In a nutshell, it's the science of measurement. It's not at all where I expected to end up (I didn't even know what metrology calibration was until after I had been working here for 3 weeks, lol).

My primary hobby is writing, which is actually how I got into dolls. One of my close friends in high school discovered BJDs and showed me. I liked them because they were pretty, then I learned people were doing photostories with them. That hit me like a bolt of lightning, and all of a sudden I was seeing characters in basically every sculpt :XD:

    47. I work in a bookstore, and I can't really imagine bringing a doll to work unless it was to show a coworker, and then it would just be sitting in my locker. But I'm not really part of that side of the hobby- I don't take my dolls out places, I don't go to meetups, etc.

My other hobbies are reading, writing, and lots of fiber arts: spinning, weaving, knitting, and crochet.

    48. Oh! How neat! I've been trying to get into spinning, but I'm abysmal at it (drop spindle and I are not friends)

    49. i am a middle school teacher. math and history, specifically!

i joke that my hobby is learning new hobbies. anything arts and crafts related, especially miniatures. so obviously when i learned about bjds it was a perfect fit for me!

im also into fitness; mostly running and weightlifting.

    50. I work in the travel industry:3nodding:

My other hobbies include reading tons of books, collecting manga, anime related stuff and im into jpop too.

    51. If it's something you want to get into, I strongly suggest trying a few different kinds of spindles (top whorl, bottom whorl, Russian, etc.) and taking a class if you're able to. Spinning is one of the few things I've come across that I just can't learn or teach without being in person. You could also look into renting a spinning wheel- a lot of them are pretty compact and even portable these days, and it's very soothing and meditative to spin on a wheel.

    52. My day life is actually a little crazy once I write it all out...

I work full time as a Program Coordinator for a business center in Ontario. I'm the second in command, do the online marketing, oversee the website and all events and workshops, and am currently implementing a new CRM.

I also own my own Branding and Social Media management company where I help business unify their brand identity and help them implement organic marketing strategies.

On top of that I have an Art degree and do black ink illustrations of miniature girls in big hats living life. I have a hobby website for that and am working on a few side projects with my art.

As home life goes it's nuts, between that and kids, and lately lockdowns. I'm the insane go getter who is president of a few and on more boards and committees than I should admit.

When kids are in bed or at their Dad's, my partner and I (when we aren't exploring my love of dolls, his various hobbies, and our various art and cosplay projects) we play Magic The Gathering. We have a big collection and mainly play Commander... But with no group play he's introducing me to Modern.

That was a little long winded but it's so neat hearing what everyone else is doing. I have tried my hand at knitting unsuccessfully and have done a year of fashion design, so sewing is a side side side hobby lol, but I'm so excited to keep reading about everyone else's interests and experience!

    53. I'm an Arts Management student, and aspire to run an art gallery. I also plan on opening a website soon to sell my own works.

I'm also interested in singing in choirs and reading novels, and obsessed with paleontology, anthropology, history, and snakes.

    54. Hi, I’m a cytology scientist. So I spend my days at a microscope finding cancer cells. Our microscopy room is a clean area, so I could bring my dolls in, but there’s not much space! I’m a keen steampunk cosplayer and love everything about comiccon and supanova conventions. Hubby and I like games and we play MTG and board games like zombiecide but he is more into miniature tabletop war gaming. I am a miniaturist too and have several dollhouses that I have renovated for my 1:12 bjd dolls. We also love sci-fi, fantasy, anime and binge watching awesome shows on tv streaming. I’m new to larger bjd’s so I am lurking around this site learning from all these amazing peeps!!

    55. Inventory/ quality control/ icqa at a warehouse. I have taken a doll to work but thats because my cat was beating him up and I didnt have time to find a hiding place. So he stayed in my locker.

    56. Anyone Else a stay at home Mommy? :D I have a toddler and I’m finishing up my last semester to get my BFA in fine arts. But before I had my son I was an art model!! I loved being part of the creative process of other artists, it was very fulfilling and taught me to love my body even with its flaws. Considering I was naked every other day in front of people lol, you sort of get rid of those insecurities.

My hobbies are doll collecting, tattoo collecting (LOL), gaming, art, vegan cooking, and fitness. I weight training 4-5 times a week and love being active and working out.

    57. I am a software-development student. :XD:
At the time I start making job-related practices, I would never carry any collectible item with me because I fear about damages or thief.
Some of my other hobbies are writing, programming, playing videogames, drawing and watching series.

    58. I'm a video game producer, been in the industry for a bit over 10 years now! My coworkers find the BJD hobby pretty cool and interesting, only got positive feedbacks on that side. I don't think I'd have a doll at work though since in office I move around a lot, I don't think it would be safe.

As a hobby, I like to shop a lot (yes... lol... at this point it's a hobby) and play video games. I craft resin eyes for fun as well.

    59. It’s so interesting seeing what everyone does!

I am currently a stay at home mom of four and have been accepted into a forensic psychology graduate program! Even though I’m home all day, the dolls still stay hidden away from the kids

I like to sew, crochet, cook, craft, and I watch a lot of true crime shows and garbage reality TV.
