What is your favorite doll size and why

Jan 13, 2010

    1. I definitely prefer MSD sized over all of my dolls. I struggle a lot with the larger sizes. They're beautiful and have a good weight to them, but MSD just fits a long better for me. Easier to carry and move around and easier for me to shop for in general. I also have a fondness of yoSD size as well!

    2. I plan to get Akagi Doll ones for my Luts Delf twins!

      • x 1
    3. I really like the aesthetic of the Akagi Doll bodies!

    4. MSDs - not to big, not too small.... they're juuuuust right.

    5. I guess slim MSD as they're easy to handle, not too big to make dioramas for, and lots of nice clothes can be found for them.

    6. I like 60-70 cm. My Rhein is 65 cm and it is ok for me. MSD is not my size. Too small and too light, and they don't evoke this special feeling...:love

    7. YOSD for sure ! I started with Pullip, so this is a size I'm used too. I'm okay with smaller (like Realfee). I got a Minifee too, but this is my limit. SD make me unconfortable, even if I really like some molds !

    8. My favorite sizes are 60cm and 50cm. Before any of my dolls arrived, I thought I would prefer 30cm, but they are just too small. I'm even afraid I won't like my 45cm doll on the way, but hopefully I will! 50-60cm is such a comforting size. They're big enough for me to cuddle without worrying about crushing them.

    9. I am receiving my first YOSD doll today so I don't know 100% about how I feel about ehm... but so far I think I prefer MSD! Although I think I will have more SDs as time goes one, I love that MSDs are a little more portable and the sculpts tend to appeal to me more!

    10. I prefer SD. Smaller sized dolls are typically too childish looking for my tastes and once they get too big they take up far too much room for my liking. :sweat

    11. Currently I only own MSDs, and I absolutely adore the size. The prices for them are usually more in my range of possibility. My grail is an SD, though.

    12. 60-75cm. Mostly 68 and 72cm dolls. I collected 1/6 figures for years, but my first bjd was 72cm and his size was cool. I kept collecting in the same range, although I have two little guys now (the characters are aged 3 and 6) I handle the bigger ones more, and am more likely to try crafting for them.

I like their size and weight (my 72cm impldoll is pushing it, though... he’s so heavy. Doesn’t help that he’s in full leather Loki costume and boots!)

    13. I used to be dead set on SDs but I think I'm more inclined towards MSDs now, not sure why, SDs just seem REALLY big to me now

    14. I love YoSD! Easy to carry around and make clothing and accessories for. I just wish it was easier to find mature looking Yosd's haha.

MSD's are a very close second though! And SD's are too intimidating for me.

    15. A lot of the MSD size either have sculpts or bodies that look too young, not masculine or too anime looking. This is the reason why I prefer 65-72 dolls. I agree that bigger dolls are very heavy and difficult to carry around with. A lot of the time I use they for display purpose only and admire their art form. If the doll is too small then a lot of attention to details will be lost - not just the sculpt and body but the outfits as well.

    16. I love MSD. For some reason they just look right. Also very comfortable to hold in hands.
SD scare me a bit, and I think I would be too lazy to carry them around. Maybe 58cm are still fine, but I am not sure.
YOSD are cute, but not much posing options and harder to take picture of.

    17. 58cm! They are the perfect size for me because they aren't too big and aren't too small for me to make clothes for

    18. the yosd size is for me the best size for sewing and creating a diorama... and making pics.

    19. I like both SD and MSD. Actually, I used to prefer MSD but I tend to like SD more now. When I started in the hobby, I thought I would never get a doll taller than 45cm, then I realized the perfect sculpts for my characters were SD, especially for boys. I struggled to find mature male MSD and there are definitely more props/clothes available for taller dolls. I also find them easier to customize. However, MSD are better to carry and display, and if it was not to shell specific characters of mine, I would have kept MSD only.

    20. I have SD to tiny size, (58cm-10cm) and I'm finding that my Two SD's are being sorely neglected. They're just too big for me. I still love them, but I'm probably not going to get anymore unless fairyland brings back some of the older cp sculpts. But I don't really see that happening.

Msd and tinies are just my thing. Msd's are big enough and some are mature enough for me to have older teenage characters, while the tinies are small enough to go everywhere with me!

    21. I used to be all about bigger 70cm sized SDs but now I think they’re too big and finicky so I’m reshelling my boys as yosd tinies.

      Pros:
      - Super portable & cute
      - everything is suddenly a lot cheaper lol
      - I only collect boys so there’s very few clothing options: limited spendings yay!
      - no more heart attacks from nosediving resin giants

      Cons:
      - a lot of bug-eyed, babyish looking moulds, not my thing but keeps my resin herd small
      - limited poseability

    22. Have you heard of mature tinies? Thy might be more your speed.

    23. After trying all scales and types of dolls for many years, the best are:

SD or SD10/SD13 size. The smaller 1/3 scale size. These are the perfect size.

      1. My least favorites are too large dolls. The SD17 size is a bit too large (I like what I have but wish they ran a bit smaller). EID and Idealian are way too bulky and large.
      2. MSD is also a great size, but have less selection in sculpts and outfits., especially mature types. I can generally interchange SD17 heads & parts on SD10 bodies, but not MSD scale.
      3. YoSD and minis are a great size, but tend towards chibi or "baby" sculpts (I don't like baby dolls). Their BJD outfits often are overly expensive, but there is a variety of clothes in ~1/6 scale. The posing on minis can be lousy.

    24. hmmm...still a bit new to this but so far, I've been getting/drawn to SD sizes but I do like MSD sizes too. I tend to prefer smaller ones in general (I love miniature stuff), idk if i'll get any tinies, but I'm surprised my first doll is an SD and still buying other SD sizes XD but they're nice. they're a good size hahahaha but we'll see if i branch out and get other sizes though it's a big daunting if I get an SD size more than 60cm (I believe my SD boys are only 60cm)
      but who knows XD

    25. When I first started the hobby I liked SD sized dolls only. They just seem the most realistic and I felt like they had more potential creatively. But now I'm starting to appreciate smaller sized BJDs and I really want a cute MSD to take around with me and not feel too weighed down!

    26. 45-60 I prefer dolls that are not too small.

    27. I love YOSD size. Its easy to take outdoor and they are cute.

    28. I love SD to 70cm dolls! I prefer 60 rather than 70 but there is many handsome 70cm boys so I have some big guys.
I prefer the presence of SD sized dolls. I used to have some tinies and some MSD dolls but I don't keep a lot of them. I own 4 tinies, I have two small MSD (35 and 40cm), I'm waiting for one MSD and I own 38 SDs.

    29. i like a msds!

    30. I prefer SD dolls. My first doll was an MSD but I find him really small and it just wasn't for me. I love big dolls so SD size is perfect to me! They're like miniature people, very realistic and with a strong presence <3 Anyway, I do want one YOSD too.

    31. I only own SDs so far, I like how heavy they are and I just feel like there are more sculpts in that size that I like.
I do find myself drawn to MSD Girls these days though, so we'll see if my preferance will change.

    32. I own 4 sizes at the moment, and as much as I adore all my dolls, my size preference leans towards the biggest ones, Volks SD16 ladies. Not sure why, I guess I just like a solid chunk of resin in my hands!

    33. I have had one of each height except for 70cm or larger. I would say that I love the msd sized dolls because they are easy to sew for, pose, and build characters for. However, their size does get in the way a bit for someone in an apartment. I have been focusing more on the 15cm-26cm range lately and although a lot of them have mpre childish features they are easier to haul around and store and the compact size is less conspicuous if i take them outside for a photo shoot.

    34. My favorite size are SD13/60cm tall dolls, they tend to have a more mature look to them and it's quite easy to buy clothes for this size.
I don't like the look of MSD sized dolls, they often look too childish and tbh small chubby doll hands with short fingers just don't fit my aestethics :sweat
I do think that dolls that are bigger than the SD13 size look awesome in person but for me they seem to be too much to handle in everyday interactions.

    35. My favorite size would be MSD. Mainly because it's a great size to start off with for me, and it's not too big or heavy and not super small either. I would prefer them to look less like children and babies though and more like adults. Because I like the way SD is sculpted but they're a little too big for comfort on my end :frownyblush:

    36. My favorite size (so far) is MSD. It's not too big or too small and are usually within my price range. I would consider buying some SD dolls, but no larger than 65cm...

    37. I prefer tinies because they are so easy to carry and set up places. That being said I like to admire the SD sizes from afar for how detailed they can be.

    38. I prefer MSD size and yosd size.
For me, both these size is big enough to show details of their dress and they aren't big so I can put them in my dorm room.
If I want SD size doll. I will only think Smart doll.
It isn't heavy so I can bring them out to take pic easily.

    39. My favorite size is the tiny class because I'm most familiar with working on that size of face, since I did MH customs before bjd, and because this size class has the most kinds of dolls I like in it, like the styles and sculpts and such. This size has widely varying types of dolls, as opposed to MSD and SD sizes that are mostly realistic or anime types.

    40. As a new BJD collector size has been a real struggle to understand. This is a very helpful thread thank you!

    41. I love the tinies, I can place them just about anywhere. I am rather fond of MSDs too. Doll Chateau is what got me hooked on MSD size, I love their sculpts and extra joints.

    42. I prefer dolls that are between 58cm and 65cm. They are big enough to inspire me but not too big to take too much space or be too heavy.

    43. I love SDs, but not bigger than 65 because that is just too big and probably too heavy for me. This size is perfect because I like holding my big boy in my arms, feeling his weight, or sometimes we watch something on my laptop at my desk and I just sit him down, lay my head on his shoulder.
MSDs are cool too! I mean, they aren't heavy and have lovely expression and all, but this size is somehow too small for me to 'feel', and I cannot lay my head on that small shoulder xD
I also have 1/6 kids and I feel like they are so small and thin like paper. They are also hard to pose because of their size even though their bodies are so good.

    44. What’s your favourite size of bjd? Why? And how long did it take you to figure it out? Did you own other sizes before hand and move away from them?

      • x 2
    45. SD13. Not too small, nor too big. I knew from the very beginning that the only dolls for me are in the 60 cm range.

    46. I have a nice collection of different sizes, but I think I ultimately prefer the larger sizes, SD and bigger or even minis with SD proportions (like MYou Doll's Big Baby sculpts). I have two Dollmore Trinities at 105cm each and they're awesome.

      • x 2
    47. I agree, I prefer dolls with more mature proportions. So dolls like minifees and SD13 are my go-to.

    48. around 70cm^^ it seems to be the perfect size for my taste

PS: I know, My "I" is much smaller but she has nice proportions :) I love her, but I wouldn't mind herto be taller

    49. I love the MSD and 27cm yosd ranges personally, the sizing is good for travelling and I can sew that small really well. The larger ones I find difficult to restring when needed. ^^’

    50. 58-65. More mature, just enough of a height range to make things interesting, not too big (though I have been tempted to bump up to 70), I don't know, I just like the sculpts in that range more. I found that out as I was browsing when I first got onto DOA. I do like the occasional tiny though.

    51. 1/4. Has the best choice in clothing, they're solid but not clumsy to handle, and their room boxes don't take up half your room. I am eyeing a 1/3 doll, but what to do with him? I don't have space to build him so much as a couch. I also love tinies because it's so easy to get nice furniture, but clothing is a pain when you're not into dresses and leggins.

    52. Knowing myself 30-40cm is where my size preference lies in. Easy to display, clothing choices are usually more cheap and more varrying, there's a bunch of sculpts that have a cute style and it's just sweet to hold them. Like a nice hand full! But SD's just have this aesthetic in male sculpts that is not found in YO-MSD. It's really hard to decide!! I'd say SD just because the beauty in them if often worth not only the price but also their size.

    53. SD is my favorite size as well! I currently have all SDs and one tiny 13cm dragon, but in the past i've also owned, YoSDs, every proportion of MSDs, and a 50cm doll, but I definitely enjoy SD scale the most!~ I only have smaller SDs between 54-58cm at the moment, but i'm definitely planning to get 60-65cm dolls and possibly a 70cm someday~

I recently made the switch from only ever owning all smaller scale dolls to all SD scale dolls and, while it was super difficult because I had been building my smaller doll collection for 7 years and their characters are deeply important to me, it was something I had been considering for a multitude of reasons and I couldn't be happier I finally went for it! To be fair though, most of my reasoning for switching wasn't because I no longer liked the MSD/YoSD scale as i've enjoyed every type of doll i've ever owned for different reasons, it was more the project I had for my smaller dolls was a very large and daunting undertaking that I became more and more frustrated with as time went on. When I finally caved and got an SD, I was so inspired by them and realized that I was so much happier and had so much more fun with them than I was having with my smaller dolls, so eventually I decided it'd just be best for me creatively to stick to what inspires me the most~
I just love how much presence and weight SDs have, WAY more clothes are available to them (especially true for SD boys! MSD/Minifee boys have so few options by comparison), how much easier it is to sew for and get proportionate findings for their clothing, etc. Also, generally speaking, I typically enjoy less "mature" stylized sculpts, but I love that there is such a massive range of sculpts in SD scale from literal children (like Rosenlied Holiday Child) to super mature adults and they all proportionately look good with one another which largely doesn't exist for smaller dolls sizes. That was always my biggest frustration about the MSD scale honestly. Its extremely difficult to create a family from adult, teen, toddler, baby etc. without having some wildly inaccurate levels of physical maturity and head/height/body size proportions that work between them all. You can utilize Pukifee and YoSD size with MSDs for fairly believable younger siblings to MSDs/Minifees, but rarely is there ever options for proportionate adults if MSD/Minifee size are meant to be teenagers.

Anyway, its a bit sad, but when I originally started looking into the hobby the vast majority of sculpts I liked and had on my "wishlist" were SD scale, but I ultimately came to the decision before officially jumping into the hobby that I didn't have the funds/space for SDs so I wouldn't allow myself to get any...
It took me 7 years to finally allow myself to get an SD (realizing that my reasons for not getting them no longer made sense since I have tons of empty doll shelves and most of my MSDs cost nearly the same/more than most of the SD sculpts I wanted) and now in hindsight I wish I had just gone with my heart straight from the beginning. I've loved my smaller dolls and every sculpt i've ever owned and wouldn't necessarily say I "regret" the decision, but I think I would have saved myself a lot of heartache and frustration if I had just done so from the beginning~

    54. I started with a MSD and can't imagine going bigger (though I have some interest in a Feeple). Perfect size to carry around, but still feels like a doll versus small child.

My YoSD size is very cute and I love her, but the clothes are already a roadblock. Since I got these dolls for dressing up, this is a negative for me in regards to going smaller than MSD.

    55. I like 60cm SD sized ones.. But yeah, It's kind of difficult to travel with.. I think 40cm MSD sized ones are just right :) plus, easier to make clothes

    56. Tinies c: Anything around 10-16cm is awesome. I've always loved miniatures and it's easy to find props for tiny dolls. It can be harder to find clothes for them, there aren't that many styles available, probably because it's so difficult to sew for such tiny dolls, but that doesn't particularly bother me. If nothing else it just motivates me to get better at sewing so I can make clothes for tinies. I have MSDs too, and they're nice, but I don't do much with them because they're just so large, and I don't have a lot of space.

    57. My favorites are 1/3– roughly 52-62cm. I feel like that’s a great size because they’re impressive but not overwhelming. In the past, I’ve owned a lot of fashion dolls and 18” dolls, and even though BJDs are definitely not the same thing, SD really stands out as different to me. They’re also easier for me to sew for and faceup. When I first got into SD, it was originally because I don’t really care for child dolls, and it was nearly impossible to find MSD and smaller sculpts that looked older than 10. I know that’s changed a lot since then, but I still like the size and weight of SD in my arms!

I started the hobby with MSD. It took about three years and handling other sizes in person to decide to upgrade to SD, and seeing all the mature wig, clothing and shoe options sealed the deal! This was around 2011, when most MSD boy stuff was still school uniforms and children’s play clothes, and wigs were either baby boy bowl cut, anime styled or faux fur. I think maybe if I were a newbie today, the mature mini options would probably satisfy me. But as it stands, I’m not parting with my SD crew! <3

    58. Feeple60 (SD13 I believe) and dolls 56-63cm is my favorite ones :3 I don't know why, but I like the feeling of they heaviness, and a pretty nice feeling to cuddle^^
But I has dolls in different sizes from yo-sd to 70 cm, I love them all, but with 60cm I'm most comfort

    59. I like MSD sized the most. Nothing beats the feeling of a big ole 70cm doll in your hands but for me it's just too much doll to handle. the 45cm range just feels better for me

    60. Mostly of my dolls are SD13 and SD17
