What is your ethnic background?

Feb 5, 2017

    1. I Just took a DNA test! Yup- I am British (Eng/Scot/Welsh), and Native Californian.
The only surprise was that I am much more Irish than previously thought, and I got a sizable chunk of Finnish/Swedish. The only way for that to have gotten there is from my ancestors in the Orkneys and in York. York used to be Jorvik and guess who founded Jorvik? Yeah.. Vikings.

      I'm white
I was born in Dallas Texas
      I live in McKinney Texas

    3. My mother and her family came from Germany when she was a little girl. Her father was French.
Grandmother from Dad's side is Italian, and had an arranged marriage to a guy in Chicago. The man was a German Italian American.

I'm not very diverse... mostly German, Italian, and bit of French ancestry. Was born in Illinois U.S.A., and lived here all my life. Boring.

    4. I'm American. Dad's family emigrated here from Hungary, so I'm Magyar on that side. Mom's family has been in the US since before the Revolution (that is, before 1776), and are mostly of English descent, with a touch of Choctaw.

    5. Average white person in the USA aka American Chopsuey. XD

Though my Paternal grandma and grandpa were Irish and French-Canadian, respectively. My maternal side is a bit more vague, something like English, Polish, idk a jumble of things.

    6. I'm Swedish with a little bit of Swiss and Finnish mixed in. I was born in Sweden and I live in Sweden. Not very spectacular I know, but a cool thing is that my Swiss relatives have a coat of arms with a crossbow on it

    7. I'm Irish, Scot, Welsh, English, German, Polish and Dutch. Really want to do the DNA test but it's expensive. My dad was 100 percent Irish and all the other is from my mom's side. I was born and raised in California, now live in Los Angeles area, but have also lived in Virginia and New York.
Hey Rosslyn I think I remember you from Silver Lining's old forum

    8. Oh hey! Yeah I'm the same me. (what part of California? I'm from San Diego!)

    9. I'm Norwegian, and my ancestry is Norwegian as far back as any of my living relatives can remember/know. I've wanted to try the DNA test since it'd be pretty cool, but it's so expensive that I haven't been able to justify the expense while earning min.wage.

    10. Rosslyn, I'm from Los Angeles originally. Now living in Simi Valley, home of the Reagan Library. It's about an hour north of L.A. I also lived in Orange County for about 30 years (Costa Mesa).
I know San Diego fairly well, as my ex took a job down there for about 5 years, and I drove down there every weekend to visit him. He lived in Normal Heights.

    11. Aw cool! *highfive*

    12. I'm an American Mongrel of the whitey-white variety: British Isles and Dutch on my dad's side, Eastern European on my mom's.

    13. I'm 100 percent Vietnamese, born and raised in Vietnam.
Well bjd community in my country is pretty small. I'd love to make more friends that share the same hobby in other countries :3nodding:

    14. I'm half Mexican (the donor was fully Mexican) and half... white mishmash, haha, but I guess Germanic stands out more than anything. Honestly, I wouldn't believe it myself if I didn't fully trust my mother with this information. I'm also Jewish, but I've no idea to what degree- probably not like, all that much anymore, but all records were either destroyed in WWII or were discarded by my great grandmother, so I'm interested regardless.

That being said, I've never left the US, haha. Haven't ventured into many states, either- just Oregon, Idaho, Washington, and California. Would love to make that statement false, but it'll be some time before I'm able to travel!!

    15. Your average Earthian here, born and raised on Earth. :P (After going through this thread and all the interesting combinations, it's amazing to think that although we're all different, we're all still humans living on Earth.)

Ok, random thought aside, I'm Chinese, born and raised in Singapore, moved to Malaysia for work and am living on a mountain in the middle of nowhere. ^_^

    16. I’m half Chinese (mom’s side is from Hong Kong) and half Australian (dad’s side is Irish with Scottish and English).
I’m a second generation American, born and raised California. I have been informed I was raised “almost” Chinese American, growing up in an Asian American community. My white dad has picked up a few choice Cantonese words over the years lol

    17. My ethnicity is Korean.
I was born in Argentina, South America.
I live in Hawaii, United States.

    18. American with mostly Irish and Swedish ancestry. Sunburn-prone, pale and green-eyed.
Born in Texas, currently reside in Arkansas.

    19. Mix bag white (mostly irish) and native american, choctowa. I was born in houston, tx, currently live in austin, tx. Good old USA. :)

    20. Chinese, born in California--ancestors came to the USA in 1900. They were all Cantonese, from villages in Guangdong (Taishan, according to family history... Many, many old-time immigrants to US from China were from those areas: Cantonese speakers).

I was born and raised and currently reside in CA, but have also briefly lived in MA, CO, England, and Scotland.

I'm about to take one of those genetic tests (they just had a sale), but I'm pretty sure it won't tell me much!

      ----Edit>

      Yep, did 23&Me test.

85% from Guandong area... a few percentages from N. China and a few more from China border near Thailand... and the rest untraceable but in E.Asia. Don't even have much Neanderthal.

Very boring--because our family history is simple and correct! :sweat

    21. My Granny was 100% Native American, so I'm 25% We don't know much about the culture we came from because a lot of it has been lost :( But we try to stay in touch with it in little ways. My great aunt gifted us an eagle feather for smudging ceremonies, and I used to make dream catchers, back when I could afford the materials. I think it might be fun to have an Indian doll one day, but I'm not sure if I could do much sewing for her.

    22. I’m a mutt, looking at me most people think I’m just a black American, but my great grandmother’s father was a dark Frenchmen with red hair and green eyes, and my great grandfather would now be considered “ethnically ambiguous”. My mother’s father was a Puetorican black. I’m a military brat so I am a British born American (I did not make it to the hospital on the base), I’ve lived all over but now call the PNW home. I’ve been meaning to get one of those DNA test done for a while now it’s hard to figure out what ones the “most accurate” though.

    23. With most of them, you can download your raw data and upload it to most of the other sites and then give yourself an average of the results. I was given the Ancestry DNA kit as a gift, and I was able to upload mine to Family Tree DNA, My Heritage, GEDmatch and dna.land. It's interesting to see the different information you get on each site (and the matching feature meant that I discovered that an uncle had done the FTDNA test a few years ago).

They all name their sub-regions a little differently, but it's GEDmatch that has the biggest population database - and they let you search for which tests use different populations, which allows you to filter for bits of your known ancestry. I'd assumed all of the tests would come back very general and a little inaccurate (because most of them would give me a split British/Greek result which is geographically close but not quite right), but GEDmatch's PuntDNAL Oracle accurately gave me a Belgian/Turkish/German population match - and the correct regional populations within Turkey and Germany, which I thought was wild.

    24. I've been curious about those DNA tests for a while now- but not sure where to start (and the ones I looked into seemed rather pricey...hmm)... :?

I'm ½ Danish and ½ Turkish (Danish mother and Turkish Father).

    25. I am considered African American, but my great great grandfather was a Caucasian slave master and his last name was originally Spencer some of that side of the family is still alive, but I don't know any of them cause c'mon that kind of history is embarrassing to my mom's side of the family, my dad's folks were from Africa cause of the features being tall and almost Asian like eyes??? I really plan on getting one of those DNA kits and find out exactly where I fit on this planet on where my past came from. My oldest living relative (104) she does not like talking about where she came from and her grandparents and all. Stubborn folks keeping secrets and taking it to their graves has got to stop!

    26. My fathers family is Welsh and Irish, My mothers is English, German, a touch of African, and Native American (Cheyenne ). I live in the U.S.

    27. I was born in the USA but I am 75% Sicilian 25% English.

    28. I don't know certainly. I'm Finnish, always lived and born here, but my great grandmother seems to be adopted (she was rather dark on a Finnish scale and had foreign facial features even though her parents were as Finnish as could be). It was at that time when you could basically claim any kid as your own, and we are pretty certain she was a gypsy originally. I have her dark features too. From my fathers side, I have genes from Lapland, might as well be Sami people too.

I would like to get an ancestry test done, but to be straight I distrust the companies that offer them and what they do with my data. I am also interested in my genes because I come from a line of sea captains on one side, and although it's a nasty thought since they were married men, I might have some relatives on the other side of the world. They didn't live to tell and weren't around much. My great grandfather (who would have had a lot of stories to share) died in Nazi Germany as the Allies attacked. He never even met his only child, so my knowledge about stops there.

    29. I was born and raised here in the USA, though my father was born in Japan. I'm mixed-race white and Japanese. My mom is mostly Irish and German with a touch of Scandinavian thrown in. I don't know much about my father's family. His mother was a Japanese woman and his father some unknown allied soldier during Japanese occupation. He was adopted by a different US Army family and brought over to the States when he was like 2 or 3.

I have done 23AndMe. Here's my little breakdown thing.
