Hybrids are just another form of customization. Sometimes it's the only way to get the doll of one's dreams!
Sometimes a character in mind has a specific face and body type. Sometimes you'll find a doll with the perfect face...but the body is completely wrong, or visa-versa. Hence, hybridization helps you get your doll in mind just right. I really don't understand why some people are so against it, nor do I pay them any mind. What makes YOU happy...what YOU think suits your doll best...is more important than anyone else's opinion.
I know in my case, I LOVE the new Granado nuevo female body, but I really don't like any of their heads. I just wish more companies sold their BJD heads separately though!
I don't see nothing wrong in BJD hybrids, as HerrLucifel pointed so well it's at least, simply different needs in terms of characters and aestetic, and i do agree that even part of customization process as weirdnessmagnet said. Most of my dolls are hybrid, mostly as i like some company face-sculpt but i don't like the body, or the pose ability, i'm quite picky about pose ability so i like doubled jointed bodies. But seems that hybrids bjd aren't such popular, or at least this was my personal experience.
I don't think it's any problem. As others have said, whatever combination makes you happy.... I myself will be creating a hybrid, but more for money reasons- there's a head I've loved for a long time, but the body makes up 4/5 of the price.
I know it's weird, but I don't like hybrids at all. The skintone doesn't quite match, the proportions are often off.
@ Cherbear: I can understand that, but there are plenty of hybrids done so well that you wouldn't even know they were a franken-dolly. I have 3 hybrids, and proportion is very important to me. That's actually why 2 of them are hybrids, to get the look I wanted. The other was only to save money since her body was too much for me to afford.
I hate different skin tones on the same doll but, well, I own 2 hybrids and no one notice the difference (I helped out someone too thanks to my pictures) XD I think that searching for the right match can be frustrating but it's also amusing and you can be really satisfied about the result of your customization!
For me, hybrid is because I like A's mold, but I want B's body. Not because A's body is bad or else, it just my own personal preference. Sometimes I find this mold is totally me, but the body is too tall/short for my character.
I want a hybrid, but not for anything doll-related. I have one piece so far, the Ender jackal head. The arms will be armwings (possibly Galena), with dragonlike or Chrom legs, a masculine torso and feminine hips, along with some sort of tail. It's mine, to do with what I want, and represents something special to me, so nobody else's opinion matters!
I like hybrids. Especially if you might connect with the body of a different doll, but you do like the facial sculpt on another. Some hybrids won't always look right, especially if they aren't matched up properly.
If a hybrid is well thought-out, the result can be absolutely amazing and fantastic. Currently, I am about creating one. I love Soom's SD centaur-body, but non of the faces to go with. If I want something elder, more mature, there is no other way but hybriding (is that even a word?). And some of the most amazing dolls on the forum, particularly in the fantasy sector, are hybrids.
I'm about to have my first hybrid! Why, because I've bought a head that needs a body and the body I need is super scarce and it's doubtful I will be able to score one. I'm not trying to save money and indeed, this will end up costing me more money actually. I see absolutely nothing wrong with it and I certainly do not turn my nose up at it. I would cheerfully purchase a hybrid as well if it had the right look.
My first doll is a hybrid two firms Dollmore Kyle Reese and Ringdoll body. And I LOVE him, because I have not a boy model looks - I have beautiful strong man! Yes, there was a risk about skintone, but the colors are perfectly matched! My Jarvis (Kyle Reese) is a nonstandard for Kyle's, I wanted to create a character is not like standard Model boy Kyle Reese. And I did it! I LOVE hybrids because people fantasize, combine and create a completely new, not like the others, characters.
Hybrids are a huge in the BJD world, so I would be very surprised if a company were to be against them. If you don't like the company's heads, but like their bodies, or vice versa, you can still purchase part of the doll from the company instead of not giving them business at all. Personally, I LOVE Migidoll's heads, but I think their bodies look a little strange and are not worth the price for something that wouldn't work for me. I already have one hybrid Migi, and will hybrid my other two Migi heads.
As long as the pieces look good together and there are no problems with how the joins work together, hybrid don't bother me. In fact hybrids in my opinion are actually really cool! It's always fun to experiment with BJDs!
i absolutely love seeing well-done hybrids! of course, it irritates me when i see a pink head on a yellow body, but that would apply even to non-hybrids. i think that they really afford owners the opportunity to be creative with the construction and aesthetic of their dolls.
I love hybrids! I actually think they're one of the many ways that the customization aspect of this hobby can be taken even further!
I *love* hybrids. I love to make hybrids, and whenever I buy a doll from the MP, I *always* look at hybirds/modded dolls first. They just have SO MUCH personality! ^3^
The hybrids that I have planned out aren't really that exciting I guess, mainly new bodies for other dolls, but for me, it's mainly for pose-ability. Even though I don't often have my dolls doing ridiculos poses, I found that I really don't like single jointed bodies at all- they just don't work for me. So I have two Bambicrony/Kid Delf, a Napidoll/Spiritdoll, and two Volks/Spiritdoll hybrids planned already I also had a Delf Soony who I recently moved across to a Feeple60 body and her proportions look SO much better- so not only is she now double jointed, she doesn't have (as much of) a bobble head anymore I also love the customisation aspect of hybriding dolls; one of my favorites so far has been a Delf Soony with the male Delf type 3 arms and legs on a female body. The owner wanted her to look a little more chunky, I think to carry off the tattoos, and I must say- the doll looks gorgeous But on top of this, there are so many unusual body types out there that could be overlooked because of the head choices (Leekworld Art Body, Doll Chateau), and well jointed bodies that have NOT as great headsculpts (Popodoll, in particular). It's a good chance to take two great things and make one fantastic doll at the end of it all.
Some companies don't sell jointed hands and I've seen some beautiful hybrids including a Mikhaila(sp?) body with a Unoa head and she was just gorgeous. I don't really see how it could be considered unethical and with the difficulty resin-matching a lot of owners spend hours trying to create the perfect doll.
I had to hybridize one of my dolls just to get him to fit the shoes that I wanted for him-- his big giant Volks gunboat-feet would never have squeezed into those particular Dollmore stiletto-heel boots, so I bought him the Dollmore Model Woman feet that the shoes were intended for. Now he's perfect. And when he wants to wear flat boots, he can always put his own feet back on. Changing one's feet to fit a particular pair of shoes = I can't tell you how many times I've wished I could do that with MY feet!
I have one whole dollmore doll, and one with dollmores head and other companys body. I don't want my dolls to have the same bodies, so that was the only opinion. I'd like companies to have many options about bodies, because we all want different things :3 I think there is nothing wrong in hybrids. They are just a fact that someone likes some head, but needs different body to it compared to what the company has to offer. It's great thing actually! We get many many different kind of dolls.
I love hybrids, especially Soom/Fairyland combinations. I just love the FL bodies and Soom makes the best fantasy parts so yeah, LTF/TG hybrids are amazing! I think you should do whatever is possible to create the doll of your dreams!
these dolls are meant to be fully customized, after you pay the price for it you are free to do whatever the heck you want with them that makes them happy as long as you don't infringe copyrights and claim them as your own creation. it's ridiculous than any company would try to restrict that simple freedom by not wanting their heads on other bodies...what would mattel said if they saw my daughter's room XD!!
Well, I'm actually constructing a hybrid doll myself, and my reasoning and justification is that sometimes, when you have a very specific concept of how you think of and visualize your doll's character, there just aren't always the right face sculpts or body sculpts to make it real in the same company. Sometimes you just want something one company doesn't have, and either you'd have to scrap the whole thing, or heavily mod without hybridizing. Plus, sometimes the pieces just call out to you, and the doll just sort of...Forms I guess. Does that make sense?
Honestly, I see nothing wrong with hybridizing; one of my future boys is entirely likely to be a hybrid because I like a facial sculpt from one company, but like the body sculpt from another company. Even my one MSD boy(who is currently a floating head, waiting on his body), will be a hybrid to some extent because even though his head and most of his body will be 5stardoll, I got him 1/4 jointed hands from Dikadoll(and am hoping I can get the resins to match). If the one company doesn't have what you're looking for, but another company does, it only makes sense to me to combine the two different parts into one doll. *shrug*
Hmmm... I went there..... my in-progress purchase features a head, body and hands from completely different companies... it's just a matter of what you want to do with a doll really. Maybe you like the head but not the body, maybe you like the body but not the hands or maybe you want the feet to be high heeled. It's not only perfectly natural to hybrid to make your doll as true to your vision as possible, it's elementary.
I think hybrids are awesome, I've got four of them in a collection of eight. There's lots of reasons to make one, for me it's just another way to fine-tune a doll's appearance to match the character and aesthetic I have in mind. Sometimes it's experimentation and practicality - I body-swapped my Resinsoul boy and my Angel of Dream boy just because the AOD's head fit so badly on his own body's neck. His head posability was vastly improved on the RS body, and my Wu's big bobbly large-featured head looks much better on a torso with more breadth, so it was a win all around. Also I prefer not to own clunky, too-childish or minimally-detailed bodies, but sometimes those companies make really cute heads, so what's a girl to do?
I'm completely positive about Hybrid BJD. So far i own 9 dolls, and just 4 of them are non-hybrid, to me is merely a matter of pose-ability and aestetic criteria. I found nothing wrong make hybrid BJD for the proupose of customizations or simply as we have in mind a specific character, the most of the time the head to me don't suit to the body, or the company offers a body single jointed or too short for what i've planned. I love on istance Soom heads, and i own 4 but the body to me is a pain to pose and play, just Onyx is on a SuperGem female body, which she borrowed to Galena anyway, and actually is the girl which i play less.
I am PRO-Hybrid. I think that part of the joys of this hobby is the customization aspect. Some parts are just unique to one brand/company and if you want to make a doll that is "everything" you want then so be it. HAVE FUN GUYS!
I think that some doll making companies are too selfish. It is natural that people try to find bodies and heads that suit their tastes better. Hybriding is great being a spacious field for creative activity.
Hybrids are the best of both worlds to me, you can get the head and the body you want on one perfect doll! I got a dollzone pet body for my pukifee head because I wanted her to be an anthro doll and the pukifee bodies aren't (there are the pukisha hands but they look like gloves to me). Once she's all together she will be perfect to me, even if she is not a completely nnormal doll.
The reason I would create a hybrid doll, is because I LOVE certain body sculpts, but don't like the heads that come with them (doll chateau and leekeworld artbody) therefore, I would put on a head from a company that makes heads I really like (ex: DiM and Unoa)
Can I ask a question here? Not sure if this is the right place...I have never had a hybrid before, but just fell head over heals for a head (DiM Ludavicas) now I don't know what to get for a body! I was thinking an angel region body, but I don't know what will fit! Cand someone tell me! I think I want a none- masculine boy body...again sorry if this is the wrong place to post! I wasn't really finding info anywhere else!
There are no rules about hybridizing. Just do what you want. Devilldoll666-- Try asking in DIM threads or in threads about the various companies you are thinking about getting a body from. They will usually know what might work or and might have suggestions.
Almost everyone has a hybrid. Sometimes it's necessary because you might ruin a body or a head and can't buy new parts from the same company. That's my situation right now. I'm trying to repair a ruined head and if that doesn't work I will have to order a head from a different company. The only problem with hybrids is that it's hard to find compatible parts.
I don't see anything wrong with having a hybrid doll. It makes sense to make one if you wanted a certain face sculpt but a different body.
My girl is soon to be an hybrid and I chose it that way because I love the MNF body and for make her a perfect doll, it does not matter if it is a mix between companies.
I love hybrid dolls! Sometimes a head looks so much better on a different body. The only drawback is resin matching and yellowing, but it makes the search/research that more fun!
I like a lot hybrids, actually my only doll of the moment is a hybrid (weird choice of doll for a newbie in the hobby, I know). I think is a understandable choice for the ones who look for the perfect doll for them.
I'm curious as to whether you can (or if someone has been able to) hybrid a dollfie dream/ anime type-head doll with the body of a minifee (or even feeple65)? I don't *think* there are any anime heads that are as small as would fit a minifee, but I think it'd be stunning if anyone has (why don't they release anime girls in smaller 1/4 sizes? >_< Usually the body-head proportions are larger making it difficult to create a cross between these... any thoughts?
Okay, old thread is old... But just because I was searching for a specific thread I came across this one. I'll be noting the first message in 2008 where they said that Dollmore dislikes Dollmore heads being used in other bodies - MUHAHAHHAA!! Here I am, 2013 and my Dollmore Kid Sona head is on Leekeworld Art Body >: 3 I'm loving it and it came a hell of a lot more expensive than just settling with Dollmore kid body. Because, y'know, both dolls were bought completes. No one will buy the remaining Dollmore Kid body from me (so it just sits in a box) and Leekeworld Ashley head- well the head has its own fans, I just am not one of them : D So buying this doll cost me two dolls x'D Not cheap at all!!! (even 'tho they were secondhands...) + I really doesn't see why companies would dislike this either o_O I mean, they got the money in order and the hobbyist is happy?
I own a hybrid, and he is the greatest thing I have ever invested in. It wasn't because of the cost...it was because of the customization! I was able to pick the perfect body, the perfect hands, the perfect head for my dream doll. And I love him to pieces~
I don't find it to be a big deal, I own a hybrid myself and never heard any complains. I think its fun to combine parts and make something different that others might not have~ unique! haha
I personally think hybrid is totally okay. I mean it's your choice of purchase and creativity. If you want your MSD to look mature, since most MSD I found look like a body of a child and carrying an SD sometimes is a hassle. (I just find them that way). I I would prefer MSD sized dolls and I'm very picky about the heads since I'm aiming for limited ones only. Looking for a matured body type would be also my thing.
I do a lot of work on my dolls until they're just right. Hair, eyes, clothes, faceups, and yes - bodies. I'm going to buy what I like, and tweak it how I like, because its my money I'm spending and my happiness that I'm concerned with. I'm not spending this much cash on something I'm not going to be 100% satisfied with and that's really what it comes down to for me.
A very old thread indeed! But I'm posting because I'd love to see more about hybrids, I don't think there's enough out there! They are the heart of the BJD hobby, to be able to fully customize a doll to your preference!
I hate hybrids. I mean hate. People call recasting "stealing from artists" that means the dolls are "art", right? So, would you cut the head off a Canova and glue it onto an Artemision? Slash the Mona Lisa for the smile to put on the Girl with the Pearl Earring.....It's either art or it's not...I hate looking for a limited doll only to see it parted out. There were 50, but someone took one down, passed it around, and now there is only 49 for "collector" types who were looking for that one specific doll.....
@necropteluate Considering dolls don't need to be literally hacked apart to switch parts around, and that the parts themselves, from heads to hands to feet and horns are available separately from many companies, your example is ridiculous. The closest match would be cutting a nose off a doll to attach it to another, and I don't think anyone has ever done that. Anyway, my own view on hybrids is that if a body and a head are available separately, have at it. DIM head on a DC body? Great. IOS head on a Dollshe body? Alrighty. Ringdoll head on a DZ body? Knock yourself out. The only thing I wouldn't do is break up a 100% limited doll (the only example I can think of would be a Soom LE fantasy doll or something). Though in that case, I wouldn't buy it unless I wanted the entire set - and I'm not personally on the market for fantasy dolls anyway (but never say never). Limited head though? Fine, stick it on anything, it's just a head. Why else would companies sell their bodies and heads separately? Customization is the heart of this hobby, and it's laughable to tell someone what to do with their things anyway.
No more ridiculous to think that an art piece has to be limited to such a narrow definition. There are plenty of multi-part installation pieces that could be mix and matched, but then you would be destroying multiple pieces not just one. The mechanics of bjds are as much a part of the art as the sculpting..... If dolls were meant to be mixed and matched, you wouldnt have to cut and alter bodies to make them fit.....you wouldn't have to worry about resin color or size differences. They would all be an industrial standsrd like barbies or monster high dolls at Walmart.

I have no problem with hybrids. Other peoples combinations have inspired my own creations and spending. I think that can only be a good thing.
Where is all this "cutting apart dolls" taking place? I don't know about anyone else, but when I remove s-hooks they come apart just fine on their own, no cutting involved. Have I been doing it wrong all this time? *gets out hack-saw* Hybrids are exciting for me, they keep the hobby engaging and fresh. Finding parts that match is like a game, and gives reasons to chat with people here on the D of A. Plus, there are a lot of different ways to sculpt a doll and I don't care for all of them. Joints are not all created equal. Neither are styles. I'm not paying multiple hundreds of dollars for something that doesn't work the way I want it too, or doesn't have the exact look I want....unless I can get it with a little blushing, which is a small price (like no price) to pay for a doll to be the way I'd like it to be. Companies generally do not re-sculpt a body for every head they make, and they don't always match up. I am more picky about proportion than I am ANYTHING else in this hobby, and a lot of times, full dolls don't have it. At least, not the it I want.
I am fine with people making hybrids, if the parts fit go for it, if not mod it and go for it. (I am also fine with modding dolls, but that's another topic.) I myself have all of two hybrids and both were cases of this doll has two heads, if I got an extra body from somewhere that's twice the dolls. My Soom Ingram's human head and body is one doll and her cat head is on a miro doll body in matching black resin. So I get a nice human woman and a 100% prefect Bast doll out of that. My Iplehouse YID Chris the addiction doll, I got to be a vampire, he came with a wonderful human head. I paid a ton for that doll and got both heads with face ups, only for his human head to set in a box in a draw never used as it had no body, and IH doesn't normally sell bodies alone. So when miro made their new 66 boy, I got human Chris, one and now have two lovely handsome boys. (And technically Kyle (the vampire) was also hybrided before, as I got him jointed hands from doll legend so he could have vampire claws/long nails and be able to hold stuff.) There was no hacking apart, no killing art on a whim, there was only I am so very sad these poor human heads set unused and in boxes. Now that I have bodies for them, I take photos of them, I play with them, and my dollies get the love they deserve.
I can be very face and body particular which is one reason I found myself drawn to the bjds as for versatility. I know i have come close to buying the red ghost girl head even though she is a 1/3 bjd and with a child's face at that. there is something beautifully haunting about her expression and face. I can just see me with a head in a case forever trying to find a body for her but then it would be my choice.
