What Company People Get Their First BJD From

Dec 29, 2017

    1. So, I was browsing around online and I came across some BJD discussions and I see people discussing/mentioning companies that people tend to buy their first doll. Then I remembered a reoccurring question I have: "What is the most common company that people get their first doll from?". So, out of curiosity, I went onto this forum here on DOA and decided to take time and compile all of the data.
This data is compiled of responses from over 800 doll owners telling what their first BJD was.
      Just so you know:
      *
      Entries were not included if
-The doll was off-topic (i.e Pullips)
-It was a duplicate/re-submission by the same user.
-It was a hybrid. (I love hybrids but it would make things more complicated.)
-the post was for some reason complicated to understand.
*If there was an artist or sculpting team that worked under a company, they were most likely grouped with them.
*In the charts below, all the companies included in the data may not show up on the chart but they are factored in.
      The Results (As of 12/29/17)

EDIT: The charts do not list all the companies that were used in that data. You can go to the original spread sheet if you're curious.
      The Original Spreadsheet
Despite all the hours of work I have put into this, it's still fallible. If you have any tips or suggestions on how to better the data, please let me know.

    2. This is so interesting! Kudos to you for taking the time to do this. The results are surprisingly not what I would have expected!

    3. Surprisingly none of my doll came from above mentioned companies…

Mine were from luts, dollzone and souldoll

Edit: Oops, didn’t see the 2nd charts

    4. Mine came from impldoll actually:)

    5. Mine came from DZ... I am such a normal BJD buyer apparently... XD But dang, I just love DZ!

    6. Sorry It doesn't say on the charts in the post. Impledoll took 1%.

    7. When I finally get the money for her, my first is going be from Telesthesia and Dragon. Have to wait for my tax return though.

    8. Neat data compilation! I added my first two the thread after the fact, but for the record I bought a Migi head first, but had an Island Doll head arrive before it.

    9. It is a good snapshot of first doll buying in the last five years (the year that source thread was started). Since people fade in and out of being social on DoA, it misses out on a lot of answers you would have gotten from the first time buyers in the ten years before that. A number of the high ranking companies listed were in their infancy or didn't exist yet. And super old timers might list companies that closed years before.

    10. Yes, for instance Elfdoll and Custom House were everywhere when I first started collecting.

    11. Ooh, that's interesting!. My first was from Luts. :)

    12. Yes, my first doll was ordered through Denver Doll and was a Custom House, and my 2nd and third were Elfdoll.

    13. The first bjd I got was second hand.
She was a Minifee Chloe in tan skin on a moe body.
The first bjd I got straight from the site was a Lillycat Ellana in pink tan:).

    14. My first BJD was from Little Monica

    15. Proud member of the 3.2%! My Johnny came from Angel of Dream.

    16. Since I haven't answered yet, Dollshe back in 2006 (still have him).

edit: This got me thinking, I don't have some companies represented in my collection 'cause my space was nearly maxed by the time some of these companies came into being. If I'd started collecting later, who knows what a difference that would make to my line up? It's funny~

    17. My first pair would be hard to place on that graph.
They were a pair of Delf Shiwoos... So, purchased from Luts. But made by Cerberus Project, which is the group behind Fairyland.

    18. My first BJD is a Fairyland doll

    19. Interesting snapshot. It must have taken a lot of work and i applaud you for taking the time to make it! It is cool to see whether or not there is a pattern for people's first dolls.

But I do agree that it is limited to the most recent influx of collectors. Many, many companies have gone out of business and even more have started up just in the past 5-7 years.

My first doll was a Kizdoll. Hardly anyone has heard of them because they went out of business may be a year or two after they started. And boy do I remember the popularity and downfall of Custom House. So many of their dolls was on my wishlist back then.

    20. I 'm surprised at some of the results, thank you for the survey!!!

For me, I bought my first doll second hand: Serendipity Noel. While the heads contiune existing at DollNDoll, the company Seredipity does not exist any more. She is an adorable sculpt and still hold a special spot in my collection and heart.

    21. @idrisfynn That is really interesting. I wish there was an easy way to factor in dates and the rise and fall of company popularity. I'm going to think on that a little bit. And thank you!

@HoushiChan Thank you! It took a lot longer than I expected. A little more time than I'm willing to admit. :sweat I want to find a way to factor in stuff mentioned above. If I have an epiphany or something, I will continue the research. It's kinda fun.

    22. My first Resin was a Resinsoul, my first from company purchase was a resinsoul and my last order from Junkyspot was... My Bobobie Isabella. All three from the same companies. What can I say? I love RS. XD

    23. Mine was a volks Nana. I’m surprised - it seems like not many people like volks these days. But I’ll always be a fan!

    24. That's interesting. Honestly I expected lower priced companies like Resinsoul and AoD to score higher. I guess more people save up and take the plunge on the doll they've fallen for rather than cutting their teeth on a more affordable but maybe less desirable doll.

For my part, my first doll was Impldoll - I think they would score higher if hybrids were included as it's only more recently that they have raised their head sculpt game - and their focus is on their larger 65cm+ dolls who are harder to buy clothes for than regular SD13 sizes which may put people off a bit if they've done their research.

I definitely eased into it gently! I had two SDs and a YoSD and I bought a second hand Dollzone Baby Raphael before committing to buying my Pukifee, my first "big" purchase as I wanted both face plates, painted, extra hands and a wig.

It'd also be interesting to see how many people went direct and how many went through a dealer. Because I was a nervous noob, my first were through a dealer but since then I've honestly found communication direct with the company to be less hassle.

    25. It’s very interesting to see how certain companies rank when it comes to initial BJD purchases! My first BJD was ordered from Crobidoll.

    26. My first was Doll Chateau MSD. Originally, I wanted Resinsoul Long but after I learned how tall he is I changed my mind. I was only into collecting smaller dolls at the time. I thought I wouldn't be comfortable with any dolls taller than 1/4 ones.

    27. This is super cool to see in this format! Thank you for taking the time to do all this consolidation work and giving us this data! :abow:

    28. Me too! <3 Amir is the first version of Chen wayyyy back in 2007! They’ve modified the sculpt a few times since then, so I feel lucky to still have him after all this time.

    29. I'm so happy that BlueFairy made it to appear in the chart, hahaha. <3

    30. My first was a minifee from Fairyland and wow nice statistics! :Ddd

    31. this is amazing! I can't imagine how much time it took to get all the data!
I got my first from Granado, my second and third from AE, and the last ones from DZ

    32. Very interesting! I'm a statistics nerd so I love this. I'm not surprised to see LUTS is so popular in the second chart for first-timers (not just saying that because I'm a LUTS superfan, hehe). My first BJD was from Luts. I think their prices are really fair for newbies given the quality, they have a pretty big selection and restock quite frequently from my experience, and the interface of the website is really friendly to those who are international customers.

    33. This is really interesting. Back when I was choosing a first doll I was initially going to go for a LUTS doll because, at least way back then, people on YouTube used to say they were the perfect first doll, I didn't end up going that way (I got a Dollshe boy instead because they did the whole discontinuation thing), but I still love LUTS dolls. The top picks definitely make sense and for the most part looks a lot like the first dolls I considered which is interesting since it's been almost 10 years now.

    34. Iplehouse.

    35. I love data like this! What I find most interesting is that no one company clearly dominates the market- even Luts at #1 doesn’t quite reach 10% of the total.

I bought my first doll all the way back in 2007. I think that because there were relatively few companies back then, Luts and Volks would have had a bigger share of the market. It’s nice to see so many new companies. :)

    36. Yep, mine came from Luts.

    37. Luts

    38. I got my first doll in 2005 and he was a BlueFairy Tommy, and I still have him. He's beautiful and he makes me so happy still to this day ♡

    39. Mine came from Little Monica and Elena was my first doll.

<--- She is in my display picture!

    40. That's a really interesting chart! It'd also be interesting to me to see maybe how it changes over time, too... (Data can be pretty fun after all). My first was a Bobobie, which I think has waned in popularity as a "first doll choice" since I got him over a decade ago.

    41. This is a very interesting topic indeed. I'm from the old-timers side (not only in age), I was a long time lurker before I got to guts to become a DoA member (there's always been rumors, even from back in the day of the Y! Groups version of the forum). My first doll was a Volks DDI, which I intended on hybridizing with a (at the time) Lust/CP VDES head sculpt, but I still own the whole DD including the DDH01 (as an optional) head, and also my VDES sculpt which is the main head on that body. My first resin BJD was SoulDoll Paris. Back then it seemed (to me as a lurker) most people owned either Volks dolls or Luts/CP El -- so Luts was very popular even then, but they had a different sculpting team (somewhat different aesthetics). (:

    42. I'm a Volks person. Kinda knew it would happen that way.....pfft.

    43. This is very interesting. Thanks for posting. My first doll is from Secretdoll. I will keep her always

    44. I’m in the majority of the piechart, with my first doll being a Luts KDF. I think when I was a newbie to the hobby, I felt more trust in Luts’s polished, professional online store and reputation as a large company. When you’re spending hundreds of dollars on something you’ve never bought before, from a foreign country, and it’s not from a big box retailer, it’s easy to get a little scared of being scammed or duped with a recast. There is a level of reassurance I felt ordering from Luts, because being a large, well known company, they have a long-standing reputation to uphold.

    45. I love looking at this data! Very interesting too, as the first dolls I was most interested in were Fairyland dolls. My first ended up being Doll Chateau, and I've leaned in that direction since. I'd be very interested to see what this would look like with 2020 data, as I think there's been a lot of website improvements in the last few years that may have made it easier to folks to buy from certain companies!

    46. *sigh* I guess I'm as always in minority - my top 3 "companies of interest" did not even make it on the list  Even among black sheep I tend to be a green one :ablah:
My first doll order was from Dollshe (yes, yes, I know how dumb of a move THAT is), but I suspect first doll that is going to actually show up is going to be from Raccoondoll :)

    47. My first doll is on layaway right now and from souldoll, which I don't see listed.

    48. My first two dolls came from Dollzone back in 2007/2008, I no longer own them but they were both sold to the same person!

    49. Proud ResinSoul owner :D At least if we only count complete dolls, since my Iplehouse head got here first. I think with so many companies around these days, it makes sense that no company would be particularly dominant.

    50. I only recently ordered my first, but she's from Luts, so I'm very happily in the largest bracket! For me it really came down to aesthetics - Luts had a lot of sculpts that hit the sweet spot between angelic otherworld-ly beauty without being too cartoonish or realistic. And they had the only sculpt I had encountered that made me stop scrolling and go "woah". When I did research on the brand itself, I read a lot of very good things about the quality and posability of their dolls, which only reinforced my initial choice.

    51. My first doll came from ResinSoul. I think I need to restring him and give him a makeover, he's been in a box in my cloeset with my other dolls for years now.

    52. I would also love to see a 2020 update if possible - it’s really interesting to see the data visually represented!

(For the record, my first dolls are both IOS!)

    53. Very interesting!

Mine were: first: Fairyland (although back then, minifees were sold by Luts), second: Luts and third: Dollzone. Almost nailed it xD This was in 2007.

    54. My first doll is from Soom, Second from dolldream, Third is from Niaofang.

    55. Omg I did not expect to see such cool infographics when I opened this thread lol, but my first doll was from Dollzone! It was during a time when they were kind of having a heyday though, I'm not sure if they're still as popular

    56. I'm thinking about getting my first doll from Camellia Dynasty. I just can't sto[ thinking about Sage and Thyme, the horses they have, and want one of each. They aren't on the list but another place that is I was thinking about for my first doll is DearMine. I like their sheep/goat dolls.

    57. I had an idea of what type of doll I wanted, not the company I wanted to own a doll from. My goal was to purchase a male elf doll of the 1/3 scale. But for some reason a lot of the elf sculpts had vampire fangs.
I ended up with a raccoon doll because I saw they had a sale on their male elves and the pictures looked stunning to me. Still waiting :)

    58. mine was from Dolks

    59. The chart is really interesting.
My first bjd is a secondhand Soom Volo :love

    60. I know this is an older chart, but I can't help but feel a bit sad because two of those companies are no longer active. RIP DoD and DreamingDoll.
