I have a Kodak Play Sport. It's tiny, looks like a phone, and takes terrible pictures. It was a present, though, and the only camera I have, so I feel bad about complaining. But I can't take pictures inside, or when it's cloudy, or of things far away, I can't use the zoom at all, and no matter what I do, the photos look pixel-y and grainy and gross. (I've seen phones take better pictures) I haven't used it for BJD photos yet, since I'm still waiting for my first one to arrive, but it's really not a good camera, and every time I use it, I just want to beat it with a hammer. (I can use it underwater, though. Super fun in swimming pools.)
nikon coolpix or an app on my iPad. I have several friends with professional equipment and skill levels who like to photograph my things for me though, they can listen and take great shots of our dolls and more so I'm very lucky for that! I'd like to learn to use a DSLR at some point but I think its too much camera for me right now. As long as I have decent resolution, I enjoy post-production and due to compensating for previously super-cheapy not-so-good cameras, even gotten a little good at it. I'm just a hobby-level photographer and love snapshots though, and I think I always will.
When I first got into dolls, my parents had given me a Canon PowerShot A3300. It's very light and easy to use- the pictures were very crisp in outdoor settings, and the response was very quick. Indoor and low-light performance was slower and much less desirable. However, I saved up from a summer job last fall and got a Rebel T3i and it's been more than worth it. I'm an art-focus high school student, and am considering photography as a career, so a DSLR was a great choice for me. If you don't want to shell out the cash for a hefty camera, don't. If you want to take great pictures, learn about composition and controlling your camera to get the most out of whatever equipment you're using. Don't make the mistake of buying an $1100 camera to take "good pictures" if you aren't happy with the pictures you've taken. And in all honesty, many smartphones are about as good (or better) than some point-and-shoot cameras available anyway. The more pictures you take, the better you'll get.
I use a canon point and shoot that I've had since I was...13, I think? Heh. It's been a very long time since I've gotten a new camera. But lately I've realized I want to try and upgrade. My birthday is in 2 days, and my mother agreed to help me out getting a camera, so I am very thankful for that. I do want to stick with Canon, so whatever my next camera will be, it will be canon. I have a lot of research to do, though. I know next to nothing about cameras /sigh.
I have an iPhone that I use but I am looking at used Nikon D3100s on ebay was really considering a D3200 but theyre not really coming cheaper for used though
This is actually an update from my last post in this thread. Since my sister got a new camera, I got her Canon Rebel XTi. Now having a more flexable camera to play around with f-stops, shutter speeds and other stuff is very nice! I'm still learning it though!
I'm using Olympus XZ-1. I think that DSLR is necessary for me. But I don't have confidence to manage that >w<
I use Canon 5D MarkII. But I like Pentax. I love Pentax's color. I think Canon's color is too bright and low saturation. But anyway, I use Canon's. haha
I use Nikon D5100 with 50mm 1.8 lense) I realy like Nikon's colours, but the quality if picture is better in Canon, i suppose)
I use a mirrorless camera. It's the Olympus Pen E-P3. Interchangeable lens and DSLR quality photos, around the same size as a typical P & S. Relatively cheap since i purchased a second hand and there is a newer model. Most good mirrorless cameras go for $1000+ I also own a cheap Canon 1100D with 18-55mm f4.5 Kit lenses. It's actually great for close-ups of my dolls. This camera twin lenses set was under $1000.
I use the Olympus EP3 too yumibara! I LOVEit!!! I also have a Canon 550D, but since getting my Olympus, she tends to stay in her bag most of the time.... I love the colours on the EP3 so much - and how compact it is... the 550 with my 3 lenses weighs close to 4kg to cart around. :/
Canon D550 on, 60mm micro lens was mounted. Dolls only did purchase. It's the result of its own satisfaction. ^ ^
I'm using Nikon D3100 and 18-55mm objective mostly, which came with it. Not the best objective, but it'll work with me as long as I can get better one. :3
Nikon D5100, typically with my Nikon 35mm/f1.8 or 50mm/f1.8, but depending on what I'm trying to do, also a Nikon 10-24mm UWA and a Tamron 90mm Di Macro. I have a Nikon 18-200VR but I rarely if ever use it anymore (I should really sell it on ebay one of these days...). Debating on moving to FX someday though, perhaps in a few years.
i'm using canon 60d now. I just got them last boxing day, still learning how to use it and i love it!
I have a Canon EOS Rebel T3 with a EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens. I've really enjoyed the shots I've gotten with it!
I have two, and then my partner has two, so I have a pick of 4.. my two are a Fugifilm finepix s2950 bridge camera and a Nikon Coolpix L26 point and shoot. Both my partners cameras a canon ones (1000D and a 50D), but I tend not to use them.
I'm just about to upgrade from an Olympus Pen E-PL2 to the E-PL5! It should arrive in a few days. I've got three lenses for it, my favorite is the Panasonic 20mm 1.7, it rarely leaves the E-PL2 and probably will be the same on the new one.
I use my iphone 5S (camera + is a really great ap that I like to edit my photos but I know that isn't the greatest) and I have a sony nex-c3. I hardly use my camera -- I have had it for a long time now and I just can't seem to get very good pictures with it. I want to learn -- but I don't know where to GO or what to DO. should I try to take a class? I think those are for DLSRs though, and mine is not. are there online classes? help?? augh. after all these years, I yearn to take good pics of my dolls, and I pretty much... don't. HELLPPP
A Canon Rebel T3i. I got it for holidays one year. It takes wonderful photos, even if there isn't much technique. When I was still in school, they had us use them for class, so I learned all the basics. It's taken wonderful photos of landscapes for me, as I'm learning to photograph dolls up close!
A brown Olympus Pen EPM-1 (an older model). It is super light weight, takes awesome pictures in broad daylight. It's also good when I am feeling adventurous with my dolly during outdoor sessions. On the down side, it doesn't work so well in poor-lit places, but then the smartphone always comes in handy
I know I'm pretty late answering, but Digital Photography School has tons of tutorials, which might help? A lot of their stuff is geared toward DSLR's, but some is applicable to point and shoot cameras too. First though, if you haven't already, I'd suggest sitting down with the camera, the camera manual, and something to take photos of as you play with the camera, and just go through and try out every option it gives you. If it has aperture priority mode at least, or allows manual controls, try those out! Lower aperture number = more light gets in (it's all about light - you want good light and plenty of it) AND = those pretty blurred-out backgrounds! Got my E-PL5! Absolutely love it.
i use a canon vixi a HFR10, it takes the most amazing pics in good/ decent lighting, the problem is i have super bad lighting in a lot of the rooms around the house... sometimes i find good lighting ad take awesome pictures of my guy. its great for outdoor shoots too since it has a hand strap for one-handed pictures plus its great at detecting the main focus of the photo and adjusting accordingly.
I now use my new Canon EOS 500d. It's so much better for taking pictures, because I can adjust so many things on it and set it up to take the good pics. I need to still learn how to take better pics though. I also occasionally use a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W610. Plus various phone cameras, but it's incredibly rare I use them now. I love taking pics with my new camera, it's super fun learning to use it. XD
I have a Nikon D5200. It's my first DSLR and I'm absolutely in love with it. It's also the most expensive thing
My primary camera at the moment is my Panasonic Lumix FZ-35. It's a fairly cheap camera, easy to use, and it's like having a mini SLR. Most of the time if you have the right lighting the pictures turn out pretty nicely. I did inherit a Canon G12, but I haven't used it much. I'm too partial to my Panasonic.
thanks AMY, this was really helpful. I do need to just SIT with my camera a bit. I find the menu confusing and need to see if I can get myself more comfortable with that. The link to the digital school was great, too!! Maybe this summer can be a Learn My Camera summer, LOL...
I use a shockingly bad sony cybershot (one of the basic models with 5x zoom) - I would be totally lost without photoshop elements 5 to tweak my photos with afterwards! On the plus side it is easy to use - it's so basic there's not that much choice in settings, which is why I bought it, as the thought of getting to use a 'proper' camera was too daunting When I got my cybershot a month or so ago, even that was a little daunting to figure out! The advantage being that digital photos are FREE - unlike the cameras with real film in them, which I used in my youth. So I just tried lots of different combos of menu options, and took about 50 shots of the same thing every time, making note of what adjustments I'd made in the menu - And eventually I hit upon a combo which I now use all the time, because I only photograph my dolls indoors, so I only really need one setting for my photos.
I personally use my trusty Nikon D7100 with my 40.0 mm f/2.8 lens. If you shoot with a DSLR, I cannot stress enough to shoot in RAW format and edit your pictures in Lightroom (or Photoshop if you are so inclined). In doing so, you are able to "boomify" your images and really make your doll stand out. If anyone is willing to learn I can help anyone who needs it
I use my favourite Canon EOS 40D with 4 different lens including macro lens. But now I want to change my old camera to a new one - Canon EOS 6D which is full frame. Sometimes I do not want to take my heavy camery, for this case I have Canon Powershot s95.
I only have a MRL camera, Olympus OMD EM-5. Actually, I want a full frame DSLR. But considered how heavy it was, I chose a MRL instead. It's small and portable, though not great in low light shooting. (sorry for my bad English ; m
I use a bridge camera, a lumix one but can't remember the model. :p I'm hopeless when it comes to photography but my camera does the job.
Cameras greatly confuse me. Too many settings, too many buttons...argh! My current camera takes really blurry photos but in the preview screen they look very clear so I'm assuming it's something on my end. I'd love to find a basic point and shoot that just gets the job done. I'm not looking for art, I just want to take pictures of my cute doll. I'll poke around this thread for ideas since you guys know your cameras.
Fujifilm Finepix HS 30- It's a fine bridge camara, simple to understand and enough for me at the moment. The upgrade from the simplest piont and shoot to this was a hughe step. I'm learning to use it, and relerning every time I take pics, because I mostly forget what I learned before. I think I should take more pictures^^
I do some cosplay portraiture work on the side so I keep my equipment up to date. I'm using mostly mid to high end DSLRs and full frame now. I just picked up a Nikon D810 earlier this week. I previously was using a D600, and before that a D7000. I tend to do my doll photography with the Nikon 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 lens. It's an older lens that was made during the film era but it has a decent zoom range for walking around and it can also do 1:2 macro so I can get very close to my girls. I'm having some doll friends over tomorrow and we're going to have a photography party with all the dolls :3 There will be new pictures soon!
I actually don't have one at the moment! I'm really looking into getting another coolpix s5 (mine broke) but yeah when I get another one will update... the s5 was awesome until I spilled some rubbing alcohol on it... whoops?
After using a Canon A720IS for years and a Canon Elph 300 for a while (before it broke, wah) I finally got my first Nikon -- a Nikon 1 S1. It's a compact system camera, so it works largely like a point and shoot but has more control and interchangeable lenses. We're still learning how to use it, but I'm already blown away by the image quality I can achieve with this thing. (And it was on sale!)
I used a regular Cannon point and shoot for eons, dreaming of a Canon Rebel since I was a pre-teen. This past year, my fiance found a Canon Rebel T2i (with it's own case, all original cords and such, battery, documentation, strap, and lens)at a pawn shop for crazy cheap and picked it up for my birthday I didn't believe him when he told me what he paid for it, or assumed it would be in god-awful shape... it's perfect. Some parts were still in packaging, so I'm assuming someone bought it hoping to try it out then got strapped for cash immediately after and hocked it. It's like new. It still fascinates me how this bad-boy performs.
I have a Nikon D5200 in red. Love the flexible screen it comes with. Have some different lenses to it.
Nikon D800 with 10-20mm nikkor lens. Sometimes switch it out for a 50mm but normally if I want to get closer I'll just crop the image at a higher res.
