What camera do you use?

Jan 16, 2011

    1. I use Cannon.

    2. When filming I'm using my H3D and on the ego my Leica M9....

     ...

Just kidding just using Sony Nex5 with Nikon 50mm 1/4 and a Canon 20mm 2/8.. which both works wonders.

    3. Canon T1i is my baby and I love her. <3 I mainly use the kit lens, 18-55mm and when I had my 50mm lens I did love to use that. It ran into an unfortunate accident though so I need to get a new one. >.>

    4. I use a Nikon D3000. Or if I'm just going out/being lazy, I have a Lumix Panasonic DMC-TZ4

    5. I use a Canon 500D, it's my first reflex and I love it (l)

    6. I use nikon 3100D
      this is so nice !

    7. I am using a Nikon D500 with 18-55mm and 55-200mm lens. I am loving the swiveling screen.

    8. Nex5 25m1.2/ 50m 1.4 .. also a Canon 550D kit lens.:sweat

    9. Replying here since the other "what camera do you use" thread mentioned on page 1 is closed. ^^

I've got a Canon Powershot SD4500 and couldn't be happier with it. 10MP, 10x optical zoom which I almost never use, because the focus ability is downright amazing for a camera this size.

Example here is size 00 beading thread and 15/0 seed bead tubes I made (posting image in thread due to relevance in that they're for doll jewellery), against the metric side of my ruler. Completely unedited, I uploaded directly from my SD card. Forgive the shadows, the lens was pretty much resting on the ruler. :3

    10. I just switched to a Nikon D3S myself - not exactly something I'd buy if it were to take pictures of my dolls. Amazing quality for BJD stuff, though, my jaw dropped when I saw the pictures I could take under normal room light.

Here's an $600 camera that might prove quite nice for a lot of the people here: http://dpreview.com/news/1110/11100710fujifilmx10price.asp

It's called the Fujifilm X10, and it looks like it'll be the best "serious" point and shoot type camera on the market when it comes out next month. It has a better sensor than most similar cameras, and the lens, which is a manually-zooming 28-112mm with an awesome aperture of 2-2.8, can focus down to only a few cm away. It's also made of metal, has great controls, a better viewfinder than any similar camera, and looks super cool. I'm probably going to buy myself one as a camera to take everywhere with me in my bag everyday, unless it turns out to be no good.

    11. Just got a really great deal on a Nikon d3000 - got a 55-200mm lens (as well as the standard 18-55mm) & the camera for less than $500... Its a DSLR so I'm all happy

    12. [h=1]Olympus Stylus 840 8mp....... :|[/h]

    13. I use my good old Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3. (hoping to upgrade to LX5 soon) ^^
It is a great camera for someone who doesn't like to use SLR (like me). XD

    14. i use a canon rebel t3i im not quite sure how everything works just yet (ive had it for a month now) but i really love what i can do with simple settings. cant wait to get me a marco lens :D

    15. I use a Sony SLT A55 that I bought originally for taking pictures of my daughter during basketball games. I bought it back in May and just recently opened it up to begin learning what it can do.

    16. I use a Canon EOS Rebel XT. My kids chipped in together one Christmas and bought it secondhand for me from one of their friends (a photographer). I have two lenses, a Canon Ultrasonic EFS 17-85mm with Image Stabilizer, and a Canon Ultrasonic 70-300 tele-photo with Image stabilizer. Both lenses were purchased used from my son who was into photography. I shoot everything RAW, then work on it in PhotoShop. I still have difficulty using a tri-pod, even though I know it makes the photos sharper. Image Stabilzer is amazing since it means I can take reasonably sharp photos hand-held even at slow shutter speeds.

All this may make it sound Like I really know what I'm doing, but that's not the case - I just know a tiny percent of what my camera can do, and stick with that. I'm not into technology, just want to be able to take nice photos of my dolls. I prefer taking photos outside.

Here's the link to my photo pages - http://www.antiquelilac.com/favourite-photos.html

    17. I use a Nikon D60 with a default lens. I'm actually quite happy with the default lens, but I will eventually get a better one. I'm still learning how to use it though.

    18. I can finally contribute to this thread! :D

I have a Canon EOS 400D/Rebel XTi, and I can't say how much I love it! I've only got the kit lens atm but it's workin for me (which is a relief after readin mixed reviews about it), it's a massive upgrade from my little DC and it's absolutely fabulous :)

    19. Nikon Coolpix. Kinda sad, but that is all I have.

    20. Nikon D60 but soon to be upgrading

    21. i owned a Olympus E-330, it was nice but the focus could be a bit finicky, but i've given that to my older sister. i'm currenly working on getting a Canon Rebel T3i (as those are my passion camera-wise).

    22. I use a Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS - although it's kind of a piece of junk. I will definitely need to upgrade down the line. ~_~

    23. Nikon D7000
and pretty much the only lens I use with it for doll related things is my NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8

I also use an iPhone 4 and several different photography apps. Including but not limited to: Instagram, Camera+, and Pixomatic

    24. In any camera with manual settings, as long as your shutter speed is a higher number than the focal length of your lens it will eliminate any normal about of handshaking. So if you have a lens that is a 50mm lens, as long as your shutter speed is 1/50 or faster (1/100, 1/125, etc) you should be fine. Or, like the two comments below mention, ask about cameras (lenses if you get a body you can change lenses on) with IS (Image Stabilization) to help make life a little easier.

And I guess while I'm here, I'm shooting with a Canon 5D Mark II, and for doll photos most often my 100mm f2.8 prime lens.

    25. Olympus Pen E-PL1. Easy to use, not that expensive, takes fab pics, micro fourthirds. Frommer's voted it best budget buy camera. Can't imagine owning anything else.

    26. This thread would be amazing if every reply would feature an unedited picture taken with the camera owned :] would be very informative

    27. Hi Mjusi, I found you got a good idea.

So I use a Sony Alpha 200 with a 28/80 macro zoom ans I also got a 50mm f1.8 lens used for portrait.
It's a DSLR reflex camera, so a tips to have better pics with it. Take the pic far from the model (like 5 meters/yards) and then select the model to be only in the center of the screen.

On DSLR the center of the screen is hi res, nearly as good as very good camera. After you will have to cut the unused part of the pic and you should have something nice.
Here is a pic taken with the zoom:

    28. I've got a Canon EOS 1100D and i absolutely love it!

    29. i used nikon coolpix s3000

    30. I use a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi (Called a Canon EOS 450D everywhere else except for in the US). The lens is a cheap (but very nice) Canon 50mm f/1.8 II lens. The only thing edited was the size otherwise it would be too big to look at.

    31. I use a nikon coolpix l120. Its nowhere as good as a dslr, but it takes pretty decent pictures! :3
      & heres a unedited picture :

I did resize the photo! ^^ The background blur is achieved with my camera by using macro mode, & zooming in from a distance instead of just taking a picture of my doll in front of me ^^

    32. Olympus E-520 here. Great newbie camera. ^^

    33. I use a 5D Mark II with many lens:

      Canon 35 mm L f/1.4
      Canon 70-200mm L f/4.0
      Canon macro 100mm f/2.8
      Canon fisheye 15mm f/2.8

    34. For Digital, I use a Panasonic Lumix DCM-GF1 four-thirds DSLR with these lenses...

      Olympus digital Zuiko auto-focus 35mm
Olympus analog Zuiko manual focus 50mm (vintage) with a Rainbow Imaging adapter
Olympus analog Zuiko manual focus 35mm (vintage) also with a Rainbow Imaging adapter

      For Film, I use..
      Kodak Retina C with 35mm, 55mm, 25mm, and 80mm lenses
pentax-k with a 50mm kit manual focus lens
Olympus 10, with the manual lenses listed above (in my digital section :))

      And a Canonet, with a kit lens...I think it's a 45mm lens?

      ........
I use a lot of manual focus lenses :D

    35. I use a nikon D7000 is my absolute pride and joy, its pretty new. :3

    36. I use a Canon 60D and a Canon 600D as back-up

    37. I use either my iPhone4; if I wanna upload to places like Instagram, or my Fujifilm FinePix S2950, which is a bridge camera. I love the fact this camera has two macro settings! I've pretty much stuck to Fujifilm camera's though, my previous two compact camera's were both Fujifilm too. This is because I find them easy to use, however I've used my Dad's Canon 550D DSLR, which is pretty easy to use too.

Here's one of my latest, taken on my S2950 I'm by no means a pro though.

This is one using the 'super macro' setting.

And this is on macro setting.

It does the job I want it to do, so I'm happy.

      Here's one from Dad's camera.

      And one from my iPhone4.

    38. I'm new to the hobby and don't have dolls yet, but I've been into photography for a while.

I have a Canon Rebel T2i and I love it. It wasn't super expensive and it fits all the lenses that the more expensive ones take. I'm really into landscape photography so I have wide angle lenses, but for Doll photography, you would want a good portrait lens.

Someone already said it, but you can get the 50mm f/1.8 for about $100 and it's a fantastic lens. (at a GREAT DEAL!) This lens would be perfect for doll photography. I take many close-up photos with this lens that look macro, and it also takes fabulous portraits (great for making those cool blurry backgrounds)

I think any Canon Rebel would be good, but if you're deciding between the T2i and T3i, know that the only real difference is that the T3i has a swivel screen for video. (that's what makes it more expensive.)

    39. I have a Pentax K-r and I looooove it. I don't have any special lenses yet, just the 18-55 and 50-200 that came with it, but I'm hoping to get more....eventually, lol. I mostly take still life and family pictures with it right now, but as I get more lenses I'll play with more options. I wish my old lenses would work, but I haven't figured out how to jury-rig it without breaking something.

    40. I use a Nikon D7000 with the kit lens (18-105mm VR).

    41. I have a Nikon 3100. My canon eos 1000d I gave to my sister when I got the nikon.

    42. I use a Panasonic Lumix LX3 and have been extremely happy with it. It still has loads of options for people who want to fiddle with settings, and there are some really useful third party manuals out there too. There are times when I would love to have the option of switchable lenses, the LX3 doesn't really do zoom all that well, but for the most part my photography is all about macro which it does really well. I don't edit my pictures, and I rarely even bother to crop them, I use the onscreen composition guides and am usually happy with the results without having to alter the photo in any way. The LX5 (newer version) is a really good little camera for those not quite ready to jump into the dslr scene, and it's also very portable. It has a pop up flash, but I never use it because I hate flash photography and prefer to go with outdoor locations or using alternate lighting indoors

A great way to see what a camera is capable of is to use flickr camera finder to check out other peoples pictures. http://www.flickr.com/cameras/

    43. I have a nikon D7000, with three different lenses (I tend to use my 50mm a lot though. :))

    44. My new camera Nikon 1j1 is an Hybrid (more light than a REflex and easy like APN with interchangeable lenses
      Price with 2 lenses : 700 usd

I plan to buy the other lenses (some new are not avaible)

i have two lens at this time
      - 1 NIKKOR VR 10-30 mm f/3.5-5.6
      - 1 NIKKOR VR 30-110 mm f/3.8-5.6

it is very easy and very fast !

      Pics are very quality !

    45. When it comes to doll photography I still use my old rebel XS (1000d) with the standard kit lens and the 50mm f/1.8, which is by far and away my lens of choice. I got the XS for an amazing price back when it was new, and it hasn't failed me yet, but I am saving for a Canon 7D. Needless to say it's gonna take a while to get one, haha.

    46. I use Canon 20D, with Sigma 30mm 1.4 lens on it.
I kinda want to change my Camera up to 40d or 550d at least...( since 5D or 7Ds are just so expensive for me D'; ) + it's too heavy and getting old... lol XD!
but well it works okay... :S

    47. I'm using a 500D/Rebel T1i with a Tamron 18-270mm f3.5-6.3

    48. I'm using Canon EOS Kiss X4

    49. Nikon D5100 DSLR with a Nikkor 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 VR lens and popup flash (for now, going to get a new one.... someday) ^_^

    50. Does anyone know any simple point and shoot that is good quality? I'm not ready to buy a DSLR.

    51. I use a Canon Eos 600 D (a.k.a Rebel T3i) with 2 lenses.
Canon EF 50 mm f1.8 II
Canon EF 100 mm F2.8 L Macro IS USM

blueskiesnorain sorry i can't help you for that :S

    52. I have a Sony Alpha 230 DSLR and I love it, sure it isn't exactly the fanciest camera on the market but it takes beautiful Sony quality images and is so easy to pick up and use (even for a beginner which I was about 2 ish years ago).

    53. I love sony cameras! My camera is a Sony Alpha A55 SLT (single lens translucent) and my sister uses a Sony Alpha A100 (older model).

The default lens on my A55 is an old 1984 Minolta lens (Konnica bought out Minolta and eventually Sony bought out Konnica). It does VERY interesting things to the depth of field and colors of the photos I take.

I can't really suggest any point and shoot cameras... last time I used one was in the 90s!

    54. @ blueskiesnorain: Naming your budget would help. Also, a preferred size and if you're really set on a superzoom.

If money is no object, my suggestions are--small: Sony RX100, very small: Canon S100, big: Canon G1X, "old school": Fujifilm X100. (These are top of their respective lines so they might be just a TAD overkill.)

    55. I use a Nikon D3000 DSLR

    56. Chisa you speak about point and shoot camera, can you explain your method to do this for BJD shoot, any tips or technique ?

    57. Well I stopped using them early on for doll photos because most of them had auto focus and you can't change the lenses on many of them. (I'm sure they have some that do both now..)

Being able to manually change the focus is really important. Most P&S cameras try to pick what you are taking pictures of themselves, they are geared towards taking snap shots of people from 6ft away. They usually are made for taking pictures of small items. My P&S had a "macro" mode, which was supposedly meant to take pictures of small items. What it really did was use the artificial zoom mode and cropped the picture.

My method to taking pictures is as simple or hard as you make it. You need a light pointing towards the background of your image and a light pointing towards your doll. Make sure you use and adapt your "white balance" setting on your camera. This method pretty much guarantees that you won't have that you won't have long dark shadows behind your doll but will increase the depth of the photo.

She was sitting on a chair with a wrapping paper roll behind/underneath her. Approx. 2~3 inches from the back of the chair is where she was standing. Lighting and learning to manipulate light is more important than the camera itself.

I use studio lighting or one to two off-camera flashes (on stands). I live in a place with unstable weather but sunlight can be your best friend as well. White balance should always be set yourself (if you are able) or adjusted (most cameras let you pick between indoor/outdoor/sunny/cloudy at least). Focus should always be set manually so the focus of the photo is where you want it. When I couldn't change focus on a p&s i used to make sure whatever I wanted to be the focal point was in the center of the viewfinder.

Might sound like more work but it actually saves you a lot of time in editing.
