Sewing What are you currently sewing for your BJD Vol 12

Mar 27, 2016

    1. @SteamWitch These look so fun.. Like a king's jesters.

After I finished the Santa costume I made a corset for my mature tiny Rachel. This was fiddly.

    2. Wow that is gorgeous & away from the usual fabric..love the floral fabric....you did a great job.:):3nodding::thumbup

    3. All sorts of festive sewing going on here!
      Vicemage, thats one cute sweater. Hope it isn't too cute for the contest! ;}
Snowy, nice details on that "simple" skirt! Good luck accessorizing. :)
Pugglenaut, you may want to use a thin fabric & line the cups in order to hem them smoothly. Or perhaps hand stitch a dainty lace along the upper edge to hide the raw edge?
Steamwitch, your creative style is always amazing!

The Macchonna's are getting ready for Christmas here. But first, my friends had a party with the theme of Aprons & Pinafores.
So, Caoimhe needed a new dress & pinafore for the occasion. I used some trim from an antique baby dress to finish the cuffs & neck of her flannel dress. Here she is with Ailionora who's wearing a dress & pinafore I made a couple of years ago.

    4. Such a homely scene with the wool winding going on..so much talent on this site.:D:3nodding::thumbup

    5. Thank you @Jany, this is the first time on a doll so I have some adjusting to do.
Nice corset! @ResinRapture and Thank you!
@cthulhu great Christmas scene and the pinafores are so sweet!. Thank you!
      Thank you @Jany.
This is the first time on a doll so I have some adjusting to do but I am pleased overall. The hood was not planned at first but it is true to the jesters of old time period so I went with it.

    6. I fell yesterday and broke a finger and sprained and bruised my hand and wrist. All splinted and wrapped on my dominate hand so no more holiday sewing for me and I have 10 dresses for my grand daughters in progress along with dresses for their dolls. I am sick with disappointment, but I'm sure living vicariously watching the rest of you talented people sew.

    7. Oh no! That is awful. I hope you heal quickly @jhiggi

    8. those dresses are so gorgeous !!! i love that prairie style so much, i'd love to have a dress like that for my doll

    9. I was surprised how long it took me to find any, myself! I feel like "ugly sweater" socks were a lot easier to find last holiday season, though at the same time, after hunting for a couple of weeks and finally finding the rack with the Rudolph and Elf socks Winry's outfit's made from, I hit the jackpot and snagged a few more at two other stores! I think I have enough leftovers from the Rudolph ones to make a semi-matching sweater for my tiny Winry, and then three of the four boys in that group will be getting the other pairs (and I'll go find one more set for the last boy).

Thanks! :) I'm hoping I won't be too much at a disadvantage with having a BJD in an American Girl-dominated contest, but they did tell me when I asked that all dolls are welcome!

@cthulhu, those outfits are lovely, and that photo looks so cozy!

@jhiggi, oh no! :( I hope you heal quickly!

    10. Oh no, jhiggi!!!! I'm sorry that fall has put the cabosh on your holiday sewing. :(
Hope the dresses for your granddaughters will work out when you can get back to sewing.

Tinyalgae, the prairie style dress is pretty simple to figure out for small busted dolls. Give it a try sometime. :)
      Making this one for Caoimhe made me so ridiculously happy...brought back memories of Holly Hobby who is an old love of mine. ;}

    11. @jhiggi oh no, I hope you get well soon.

@cthulhu This is lovely. I am a sucker for those old fashioned dresses, and your's are adorable.

    12. Thanks for all the well wishes. This morning I'm even more swollen than yesterday and my poor husband is helping me cut my food. I can type on my PC though, so I know what I'll be doing more of for a bit. My daughter is coming over today to help me with the dresses. I can't cut or hand stitch but I should be able to guide some seams through the serger or machine. We will try at any rate, my daughter is an awesome seamstress and can finish them, the whole point is this is what grandma does every year, oh well, it is humbling and embarrassing a bit :(

    13. Turns out the dress is too long, but I used a zipper in the back so just taking it up at the waist isn't quite going to work easily. I really don't want to unpick that seam, but also I don't want to redo the embroidery. (the embroidery would probably be easier to redo)(the hem would be a pain tho) I'm kind of thinking to do a double fold (like below) but up at the waist instead and just sort of duplicate the box pleats with another layer of fabric. It will probably change the way the skirt drapes, but I think that'd be okay.

Here I folded the length out of the way so I could work on shoes.

@sapphire7 Well, my sibs got brown fleece to make boots out of, but we haven't gotten there yet. I did experiment with hot glue over foil last night.

      Hotglue shoes (read: glass slippers)
      on Flickr.
Shoes are a new thing for her and she doesn't quite know what to do with them.

Definitely a first attempt. I didn't quite get all the foil picked out of them and they're rather lumpy. I'll be wandering the other crafting threads for advice on making these better.

    14. Adorable outfit. Could you take a couple of pintucks parallel to the hem & above the embroidery?

    15. @Raine Crowe *researches pintucks* OH that's basically what I was thinking, only in terms of one big one, inside out, and following the box pleats. You think to use it as framing for the embroidery? Hmmm... Thanks!

eta: I could even put one at the waist to take some of the length out of the bodice too!
eta2: No, because zipper. Also my original idea: No, because zipper. Looks like knee pintucks.

    16. I'm finally making sweaters out of fabric I bought last year. Hart looks good modeling it. I have to either put in snaps or buttons in the back, perhaps make it look good both front and back for two different looks.

    17. Hart looks awesome!

      You mean like this?

(sorry, dark colours are hard to photograph with my old camera, particularly in artificial light.)
Anyway, it's done! Now I really need to buckle down and get work done on their formal xmas stuff ...

    18. Thats such a shame but Ill pray for you & may it heal really fast so you can get back to sewing...it would drive me nuts not able to do anything.:)

Wow thats great..I havent seen that before..are they hard? maybe you could sandpaper them smooth if your going to paint them or cover with fabric.:thumbup

    19. Take care, jhiggi! I wish I could see those 10 dresses! :)

    20. @sapphire7 , yeah @pinkandyellow suggested sanding too. They're not as flexible as I thought they'd be.
Maybe I'll just cover them with fabric. Fleece hides a multitude of texture sins. Next time I may just make the soles in hotglue and fabric uppers.

Okay, doll sewing goes on hold until Pong arrives. I have a todo list forever long and a week to do it.

    21. I took the pant waist in about 4 inches and it makes a big difference in the shirt, but doesn't change the look of the pants (not that you can see in this photo, lol). I also finished making his fool prop. The head is from a 1980ish Jack Frost decoration that I finally took apart. He looks much better this way, the little fool's name is Bellenhawk.

    22. the ortho doc wants to pin a bone in my hand, so going to surgery on friday, i need my hand to heal properly so I can do all the things i love to do. please forgive the lack of punctuation the docs have put a temporary cast and my mobility is now diminished to 1 hand at the moment. my daughter has taken the dresses to her home now as I am unable to do anything for a while. I'm already bored! walking the dog alot, maybe I won't gain the holiday 10 this year. thanks for the well wishes. trying to go back and edit ugh, this is killing me, sorry.

    23. Don't worry about editing, it's not a problem. I am glad you are getting your hand fixed and hope it heals perfectly and you can get back to what you love doing. Just post a few ;):XD::cool::thumbup every once in a while so we know you are there.

    24. will do:3nodding:

    25. An afternoon project has hijacked my week...again!
Meant to make Quinlan a jacket for the holiday photo shoot. I spent yesterday sorting out the pattern.
Then spent today making knickers, socks, shirt & vest but still no jacket!?!?!
      Geesh. I'll be back.

    26. Now he's been hot glue sueded & restrung. Geesh, that a series of tasks Quinlan has led me through!

    27. me too! i thought they were really cool boots till victoria commented and i took a closer look

    28. He looks adorable. I love the whole outfit!

    29. You were right the first time auntbear. XD And thanks for the thought Victoria Victrix.
They are a pair of dollheart boots which had an over the toe/just too much metal embellishment. I was desperate for more Victorian like boots for my kids & risked taking the metal off of this pair I'd received with a doll. Good thing there was a finished boot underneath! ;} Does look like spats now that you mention it...
This fabulous wool has a really nice fine pattern in it & lots of colors of brown. I found it at the second hand fabric store in town. <3
Thanks Steamwitch! Hmmm....maybe he doesn't need a coat after all....XD

    30. Oh goodness! I forgot to show you the final result of the pintuck adventure! I also folded the top elastic casing over inside once more to shorten the bodice section.

      Pintucks

And then my latest (packing procrastination) project: Tiny Tree. For my PP Pong who's not here yet.

      Tiny tree!

      • x 4
    31. She looks great in her new dress! And aww, that tiny tree is so cute :love

    32. Im working on a set and wonder if I should make a headpiece with more of the silver braids, what do you think?

      • x 7
    33. I think she needs a head, not a headpiece! :o

      • x 2
    34. Your dress turned out fantastic! And the tiny tree is adorable.

    35. Evshie, the cape & dress look fantastic! What era are you going for? Or is it a fantasy concept? First thing I thought is she might need a warm hat with some of the fabric & fur as well as the trim...but then it depends on the design concept. And whether she's wearing it out & about or keeping warm at home where something more decorative would be fun. :)

    36. I love the silver and blue concept and really like the clasp on the cape. The silver military buttons look out of scale and place for the over all grace of the rest of the outfit. I notice they are just pinned on, are you just auditioning them? Try something more delicate and feminine. The outfit is quite spectacular so I say go for the headpiece, what color is her wig and eyes? Have fun and I can't wait to see the finished project!

    37. I love that outfit the cape has to be my favorite part though. It looks so cool.

I got this fabric the other day and wanted to make Avery a new little outfit. With Valentines Day coming up I thought it'd be perfect. (It's supposed to be snowflakes but I thought it'd work for both occassions.) It's not a dress though, they're two separate pieces. I didn't wanna lose the elasticity of the skirt by sewing the top to it.

      • x 3
    38. Yes, I was thinking about making something along that way
It is a fantasy concept, kind of a winter maid theme.

Yes, I was trying them out to see if it would work. But I can see now it clashes with the over all style. Maybe smaller, silver coloured buttons would make a better fit?

    39. Could not help myself :sweat What do you think?

    40. Oh! that makes so much sense! Especially when the top is fitted and the doll is hippy.

      @Raine Crowe Thanks!

    41. Yeah! And she's pretty skinny, most things fall off her a lot so with this top being fitted completely to her I figured it's easy to hide the little gaps. (And it looks sweet)

    42. Super cute, who doesn't need a beret and a raglan sleeve shrug? I love the ribbon. Did you find some buttons for your blue piece? I'm assuming this is a different doll, I have a thing for redheaded freckle face dolls. I really like the prominent eyebrows. I've never tried this cranberry color on my red heads before, it looks good.

    43. Thank you! I havent found some buttons yet but keeping my hopes up, it is the same doll! I just like diving into different styles XD
And thank you again! Super happy with the face up, I also have a thing for freckled redheads

    44. @tanyaalexiz I love it! It's very 50's pinup, and it's so neatly constructed.

    45. Very cute and the fit is great. She looks adorable in it.

    46. I love that face with that outfit! There's a story here...

    47. I made a sweater for Annika. This was my first time sewing something for a BJD (third time sewing something for a doll) and my first time drafting a pattern from measurements. I did not make her skirt, just to be clear.

    48. Nicely done! Did you also make the afghan behind her?

    49. Thank you! Yeah, I made that too.

    55. I love your tiny reversible dresses and the sweater and hat are super cute. Well done, it is difficult sewing for tinies.

    56. Thanks!
It's tricky, but also quick once I figure it out. Now I'm trying to come up with a different style before I get bored of these wrap tops.
