Sewing What are you currently sewing for your BJD Vol 12

Mar 27, 2016

    1. I loke that look with t
I like this look with the black with the pattern..I actually think the sock clothes are really cool.:):thumbup

    2. I like them too. I love in-scale patterns, and socks are a great resource ... I found some larger ones (label says "Socks For Everyone", I hope that holds true ) that I'll try and make sweaters for the boys from. They're a bit higher, almost like knee socks, which is good because I only have one pair per sweater, no flat colours or compatible patterns. We'll make it work somehow.

    3. Finished the first sock sweater while waiting for the paint / glue to dry on the doll guitar I'm making :)

Looks like this belongs to Katie now.

    4. Very nice! I'm definitely gonna have to start eyeing those matching packs a bit closer now.

    5. I Like it..I just buy up a lot of socks when they go on sale..you can use them for anything & the fact they stretch to me is great. Maybe not good for certain things but ok for others.:):3nodding:

    6. Two-sided thing, that stretching!
The bad thing is, socks are so stretchy BJD fingers can poke right through the stitches.
The good thing is, they're so stretchy I can get two fingers into a doll sleeve, grab the doll's hand and pull it through ... *_*

    7. Wow, it looks so natural. very cool.

    8. Thank you!

    9. I've always just wrapped some clingfilm over the doll's hand before I try to put it through a knitted sleeve. Keeps fingers from snagging on stitches too.

    10. Yep. I had to grab a mini bag some eyes were stored in to slip on a hand the other day. I have a dress made from an old sweater of mine where the sleeves are a lovely lacey open knit & the fingers were poking through every which way!. That bag was the first thing near by when I looked up feeling frustrated & it took care of the problem. XD

    11. It's a very good idea, I would never have guessed about it myself, I face the problem too, from time to time.

    12. Slipping some doll socks over their hands helps too.

    13. Just had a silly thought if you make some mittens with no fingers from shiny material for the dolls hands & a threaded fine string round the wrist that you can pull & tie in a bow & that may help to slide the sleeve over...must give that a try myself. I get weird ideas sometimes.:mwahaha

Didnt think of that..goodness some of us have good ideas...well you not me.:)

    14. That's lovely, @LaurieESW! Is the top crushed velvet? It looks so vibrant.

    15. Thank you, it is a velour that has a crushed velvet style.

    16. Buy some of those small gift bags you can find at the craft stores (like Michaels). Usual with the wedding stuff. they have draw strings and you can get a bunch for cheap.

    18. She's looking very elegant in that dress, @lgijbels!

I found that I can squeeze one sweater out of a single pair of socks - if I'm okay with the seam line running down the centre of the body parts. I'm not sure if I mind for the back; in front I'll work around the issue by adding a zipper. We shall see how that works. If it sucks, those socks were โ‚ฌ3 for three pairs ... I can just grab another pack. All the guys need all the clothes anyway, there is no such thing as too many "sweater socks". :3nodding:

      Love the fit..she looks great.:):3nodding:

We sadly & very sadly dont have Michaels in New Zealand..in fact we dont have a lot of those type of shops here that you have in the US but thanks & a good idea.:3nodding::3nodding:

That is really lovely as it fits the season beautifully.)

We dont seem to have seam lines in our socks that Ive brought as they are made like toy make socks on the 4 needles so no seams..Thats really great buying isnt it for dolls clothes I think.:):3nodding:

I think its lovely & we all had to start somewhere & Im sure we all made the odd mistake along the way but keep going & as one of the girls said you will end up with a lot of clothes.:):)

    25. This was a totally unexpected project -- spurred by the hat accessory discovered during a routine ear cleaning. Adhara didn't have anything in her wardrobe to match it, so the solution: make a new dress from scratch.

This is technically still a WIP because I hadn't finished attaching the lace trimming, but it's over-all ready for a photoshoot. My most complex doll outfit so far, because I usually handle only Oriental designs when sewing. (Crash course in sewing godets and fitted bodices.) Necklace obtained from an existing Iple set.

    27. Thank you @sapphire7 .
@cthulhu, I bought the rocking horse at Wibra, a cheap discount store in the Netherlands

    28. Bought more socks, now it's on to sweaters ... next to the bunch of concert clothes I'm trying to complete for my main crew within the coming weeks.

@sapphire7 maybe I used the wrong word ... the seam lines aren't really "seams", but there's a visible line where the patterns don't line up exactly because they switch colours for the next stripe. It shows a bit in this pic, it looks like a crease at first sight (the far right and far left) but they're completely flat:

    29. Soooo in the artificial lights I noticed too late that the socks with the large stripes are in fact very noticeably (in natural light, that is) different colours. Guess who has a WIP shirt with one sleeve and the front in one, the other sleeve and the back in the other colour ... :doh Oh well. At least it's the largest-striped one, which I liked the least. Good thing I decided to start with that one to avoid messing up the nicer pairs ...

    30. Oh your right..one black & one blue...xD...Im sure though you will be able to make something else with the bits..maybe a hat & gloves..maybe not.

    31. Donโ€™t have any pics, but Iโ€™m working on finishing my elf boyโ€™s outfit

    32. Can I ask all of you who sew please..do most of you sew by hand or machine..the clothes that Im seeing are so beautiful & polished. Thanks.)

    33. @winxwarrior ooo elves! Please do share pics whenever you have them! <3

@sapphire7 I do most of my sewing by machine, unless it's small stuff (sock sweater turtlenecks / hems are best done by hand, I find). Sometimes I go through phases of preferring the one over the other, but usually most is machine work.
As for salvaging the first sweater - maybe. But for now, it's been scrapped and the next (prettier) one has been started. Have a WIP pic of it pinned on Sven:

    34. Mostly I use a machine but I do some of the hemming and little work by hand.

      • x 1
    35. I do mostly machine sewing. However, there are occasions where hand sewing must be done.
The hand sewing I do for doll clothing is mostly the lining, beading and trims, and use my machine for most all other.

    37. Thanks for sharing your sweater socks, I've made some for my girls but it just never occurred to me to make them for my guys, duh!

      • x 1
    38. Jany...Oh wow you are fast its almost finished & looks great & live how you match the lines..Im a bit fussy like that.
Ive been doing the biggest part of my sewing by machine & do zigzag right round all the edges & thats helps when you need to turn something under like the neck & sleeves but for the tiny doll Im finding it a little hard & sew quite a bit of it by hand..think when my bigger girl arrives it will be so much easier.

SteamWitch I think it seems a mix of hand & machine is the way to go..thanks.

LaurieESW Goodness you do lining as well but I guess with some fabric you need that & beading..yes that has to be done by hand...I look at some of the work you all do & its a total love of what your doing & of course you love to take photos after they are finished..I think I need to refocus & get out of my head its a doll so make clothes. Thanks.

ihnasarima Oh my goodness all that embroidery on the bottom & are you going to make the shoes as well?

Thanks all for your help I think I may buy a new machine & see how that works I think my embroidery machine is too heavy & I dont like the foot as I cant see when you first start to sew as the foot is totally metal...if that makes sense...I cant see what Ive done.(

    39. i have a clear plastic foot that i love for sewing tiny seams. it's much easier to see where you are going than the metal ones. it was an extra foot i bought. maybe you can just get a different foot for your machine instead of a whole new machine?

      • x 2
    40. Extra feet all the way! I could never have made these stripes line up without my even feed foot ...

On the subject of this sweater - I need some neckline help. I was going to go for turtleneck, but now the whole thing looks a bit slimmer than I thought it would, not as "super roomy comfy winter sweater"-like. So I was thinking, maybe do a V-neck instead ... and then I thought, the little stripes might make a V-neck look too much like PJs! What do you guys think? (Not that PJs would necessarily be a bad thing, I'd just need to make up my mind about the bottoms.)

    41. I was thinking that..dont know why among all the dif feet there are there isnt a clear one or one that is shorter on one side. I want to be able to see when I come to the corner...xD. Thanks.

I dont think with a V Neck it would look like PJs at all.:)

    42. Could you do a cowl neck? that way it looks like it has an attached scarf. Would make it more cozy looking.

    43. Good idea! I need to check if the cutoffs from the socks are wide enough for one.

    44. what brand of machine do you have? i have a bernina and they have the clear foot available to buy separately. not everyone likes plastic feet so they don't include it.

my mom's old singer used to have a metal foot with a plastic center so you could see where you were stitching. not sure about other brands

    45. ruffle and gold pom poms?

    46. Best of both!!!!

    47. that's what i thought. i'm not sure what scale you are doing but i'd be tempted to try and find metallic gold pompoms or make them out of gold thread. i don't think jesters can ever be too over the top

    48. It is for SD17+ The material is stiff and will stand out on it's own, it doesn't drape at all and that is what I wanted. I agree never too much for a jester.

    49. @Jany that pullover is amazing. Great job at lining the pattern up so perfectly OoO

@SteamWitch OoO Holy moley... That level of detail is CRAZY!!! Totally my kind of thing *0* Congrats on finding those tiny patterns and honestly amazed at how neat you lined it all up. *whistling*

^^ยฐ Opposite to the master pieces here, I've just sat down to get one of my girls a new skirt.
[IMG]Candyโ€™s new outfit. by Wildcard_Snowy, auf Flickr

Still gonna need to wash it, so the stiffness of the fabric goes away and gives it a nicer fall, but overall I'm happy with it.

Trying to think of some extras to make her.
She's part of a sort of adventure group, so maybe a belt with tiny pouches.

    53. Top works, but for this one, it's an "Ugly Sweater." :)

    54. I need to get to work on a couple of ugly Christmas sweaters for Rog and Blake their bodies have been delayed because of the Christmas delivery load. So that gives me an extra day or two to pick out socks for those UghCSweats.

I'm getting closer to finishing the Jester costume I started with thick upholstery material. I may reduce the waist line of the pants I don't think it will interfere with the look of the pants but it will help the top look better. A little more trim in places and I think it's done. Dray isn't part of the Curious Twilight Bazaar but he is security for both them and Pointless Lore. He can hide a lot of weapons in that huge suit.

@vicemage much too cool for an ugly sweater!:XD: I love it, been on the lookout for motif socks for ages but no dice. So my guys and girls get all the stripes.
@Snowy thank you! I think your girl's skirt looks super pretty <3
