Sewing What are you currently sewing for your BJD Vol 11

May 3, 2015

    1. that is lovely!

    2. I'm working on a travel quilt for Calli. She's holding onto the finished sections (and I think keeping an eye on my work, lol.)

    3. thats a cool design. when it first popped up on my tablet the picture came up without your description and at first glance i thought it was a mermaid tail on her, especially with her hair color, and the blue panel right beside her. then i looked closer and saw it was a quilt.....

    4. Thank you, I'd found it in a book of southern quilt designs, and thought it was neat.
Lol, I guess it does kind of look like a mermaid tail now that you mention it. ...Maybe that will be a future project idea, a mermaid costume for her.

    5. I am VERY impressed with those jeans. I think that jeans are THE hardest thing to get right, to get all the little details correct.

    6. Lovely job on that quilt. I have sewn one of everything EXCEPT a quilt. Quilts intimidate me! So many little pieces to keep track of!

    7. Thank you. :)
Aww you should try it sometime, then you can say you've done everything.
...I usually keep my little pieces in sandwich bags to help keep track of them, and label the back of each piece so I can tell where they belong in the quilt if I find a random piece separated from the others. Maybe that would help you some.

    8. Thanks @Lelycat and @rosalynmouse ! :3nodding:
@radioactivealchemist That's quite the lucky find! It's amazing where the neatest fabric sources turn up! :celebrate

I would love to try quilting...maybe some time. I donโ€™t have enough scrap 100% cotton tho. Is it cheating to use a serger? :sweat

    9. @Darkwingchick
I don't think it would be, ...with all the stitches on a serger I'd imagine you could do some neat "victorian crazy quilt" type things. And with a crazy quilt you can use really random shapes of fabric and more than one kind of fabric so there's a lot more flexibility.

    10. ....my serger only has one stitch, it's an industrial overlock kinda beastie... but crazy quilt, you say?
Damn you, quilters! Always trying to suck more ppl in!;)
One of my friends makes really neet 8-bit quilts.

    11. Ah I see, well it would still work. ...Yep, crazy quilts are neat looking, I've never made one (so I don't have any pics to post) but there are some awesome examples that pop up in google.
Lol. That's the nature of hobbies, pulling others into them.
Oh nice, that's a cool sort of quilt.

    12. So, I was poking around in the dollar store, and I suddenly realized that one of the $1 "tattoo sleeves" from the toy aisle might be an interesting source for doll tights or clothes.

If you don't know the sort of thing I mean, it's one of these--
      [IMG]

I liked the old-school designs, and I already know that I like oversized patterns on tights, so after some quick cutting and a couple of trips through the sewing machine's zig-zag setting, I got this.

What was really nice is that I didn't need to add any elastic or do any hemming. The top and bottom of the sleeve were already finished, like panty hose. I think it maybe took me 5-10 minutes tops, not counting for time taking pictures. They are pretty sheer, but that's okay, because I pair them with long shirts or short dresses any way. ^-^

ETA: I posted a tutorial on my LJ, if you want to see the process! Doll clothes making! (A Tutorial)

    13. Cute!!:kitty2

    14. [IMG]
I found some cheap kids' socks in my local supermarket so now Freddie, my MSD DoC Zen, is sporting a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sweater (and matching beanie, that still needs hemming!).

Because it was a small sock, it was a bit short, so I added a bit to the bottom to lengthen it. In retrospect I wish I had used some of the other sock in the pair so as to have more horizontal stripes, the vertical ones look a bit odd.

I am quite please how quick and easy this was so will be keeping my eyes out for more socks! Ideally slightly bigger ones next time.

    15. I'm attempting to make a pair of shorts for my girl, but she's proving be uncooperative :/ I'm also attempting a two piece lolita dress, so we'll see how that goes lol.....

    16. @Osaka those tights are really cool

cute shirt @Elgyfu . i think the bottom stripes look fine. i looks like rib on it.

    17. Hi hi im new to den of angels and i came upon this form you guys have nice sewing skills

    18. What an awesome idea! Those tights are super cool - I'm going to have to keep an eye out for some of these sleeves myself!

    19. I want to thank @VampireAngel13 for pointing my way into post-apocalyptic/dark mori clothes. I wanted to try to make something similar but still my own. So here is one outfit I came up with after combing through my stash and the fabric store by my sister's house. My Illusion Spirit Minos became Mamoru Hijikata, who is a manga character, he lost his eyesight but is still a powerful swordsman. He makes a great character to wear something like this (sans sunglasses).

    20. @SteamWitch --That's a good look on him! (I'm having to rein myself in on the dark mori for the moment, but I decided a while back that I wanted to put Severus in dark mori when he's not in his proper wizard robes.)

    21. Thanks @Osaka. :) I think Severus would look comfortable in dark mori.:thumbup

    22. @SteamWitch I like it! The style works really well for him. I like how you've used prints too, I don't see prominent prints so often in Mori, and it certainly looks good!

    23. Thanks, @ronnie92 I used the wrong side of black and white polka dot knit, it worked just like I wanted. I really like the texture of the fabric. I'll probably make a few other things out of it, keeping in the dark mori/post-apocalyptic theme.
I like the way this fabric frays too and the zigzag to tame it doesn't interfere with the main texture.

    24. Working on boots for my Teenie Gem's awesome Faire outfit. :3 This is gonna be sooooo great once it's finished!

    25. Thanks very much for the tip!!

My 2 big girls, SD13 and Dollmore Alexia, in their leggings I just made. My toy poodle had to do a photo bomb since I was in the basement for a whole hour and she won't go down there.

    27. I just finished my second complete outfit for my Mystic Kids Lillian.
The shirt was a pain in the butt, but I'm relatively happy with how it turned out.

    28. She looks adorable!

Question ... I'm about to get myself a DiM Happy girl (or two) and was wondering if there are any patterns for those cuties floating around? I found a lot for slim MSD, but those are more "child-shaped" than, say, Minifee ...

    29. You'll find that patterns for OT Ellowyne Wylde and Delilah Noir fit Minifee perfectly.

    30. I just got Calli's traveling quilt finished. Here she is with it.

And here's a shot of just the quilt.

    31. @Myths and Magic --That looks amazing! Quilting is one of those skills that I just do not have, so I am in awe!

    32. OMG that quilt is gorgeous! :aeyepop:<3

    33. @Osaka
Thank you. I've been quilting for several years but I have to admit this was one of the more challenging quilts I've done, with all the curves in the pieces.

      @SaelaVe
      Thank you very much.

    34. Myths and Magic: how big is the quilt? Beautiful. I see she is very happy with it.

Now she needs a pillow to match.

    35. @chrystal
Thank you. ^^ It measures 21 x 22 inches, so I can fold the edges in on her and roll her up like a burrito.
And she actually has a matching pillow already. I'd made a pillow for her chair from the same fabric I used in the third 'block' from the left on the top row. (the blue one) The pillow actually matches a lot of the colors in the quilt since it was tye-dyed fabric and I managed to catch bits of the blue, purple, and green in it.

    36. That shirt looks pretty darn fantastic, I never would have guessed you were new to sewing! :D

Also I love the fact that he is Inquisitor Lavellan :D

    37. My Unoa L-Bi, Door, has a new outfit of his own. I went for a Mori-style vibe, and I now realise Bretta needs a Mori-style outfit too. The trousers are kinda...I dunno, pantaloon-esk things with sock-ribbing at the waist and knees. The pockets are fully lined although you can't really tell in the pic. I am very pleased I figured out how to do them!! And the waistcoat...I'm stunned it actually worked. It's fully lined, and as usual when I line things the lining doesn't...line up. But with a little tweaking it kinda does. The outside is made from upholstery sample fabric (it's a beige at the back).

    38. @Nefla Haha, thank you!! :whee: I've seen some other with Lavellan dolls and I get super excited when I see them too!

@Winterglow I Love his outfit!! The waistcoat is definitely my favorite part, all the colors and the pattern on the inside looks really great! I love how unique all the pieces are.

    39. I made this for Petal, my RS Rong.

    40. My new Iplehouse Lahela is supposed to arrive today. I have several outfits planned, but I think that what I will make first is a black sleeveless mini dress, which I will paint tiny gold Egyptian hieroglyphs on. It will be quick and easy to sew, and way fun to paint.

    41. I've been lurking here, admiring everyone's work but not posting much for the past...erm.. months probably.

I haven't been sewing much either and in an attempt to get back into the sewing zone, I took part in the Unfinihsed Business round of the monthly sewing challenge and dug out a few of my (many) unfinished doll sewing projects.

I started with the ones that just needed fastenings added or something equally small done to finish them off:

Then (mostly) finished off this suit (cut from an old shirt) for my Soah:
Although it still needs those pleats at the side of the jacket-skirts sewn in place rather than being pinned, and I have yet to make the underpinnings (she currently suffers the indignity of a skein of yarn stuffed up the back of her prtticoat instead of a proper bustle).

    42. Soah looks gorgeous in her outfit.

    43. Thank you

    44. lovely dresses teddy.

spending a month working on unfinished business sounds like a good idea. i've been trying to do do 'finish it fridays" and spend fridays finishing up stuff that piles up the rest of the week, but my pile of ufo's seems to grow faster than fridays allow can pare it down! i am so bad at doing those last little bits, like sewing on snaps. i usually don't have them with me when i'm out, so i just start the next piece instead.

      • x 2
    45. Oh my goodness those are gorgeous! :D

@auntbear, I have the same problem. I'll finish the body of the garment, but never put on the back pockets or the belt loops or other finishing touches. :sweat

    46. Thanks

It's certainly helped get me back in the sewing habit a bit.

      Sounds very familiar.

I like the idea of "Finish it Fridays" and every bit you do helps get them moved on a little.

      Thanks!

Seems like there are a number of us that suffer form the same problem.

    47. Teddy is way too modest. We only see his BJD work here. I've been to his place, and the number of dolls and handmade outfits he has would make you faint. And that doesn't begin to get into his human costumes. Teddy, you could stop sewing right this minute and never make another thing, and you'd have any three of us beat for the rest of our lives.

      • x 4
    48. Thank you for confirming my suspicion that @Teddy is being far too modest. Everything I've seen is Amazing, and then to pop out of lurking with three finished outfits (that last one is just wow, btw) Really. I'm lurking because I work too much OT and then spend my down time drowning my woes in horrifically overpriced organic ice cream and trying to talk myself into testing out the pants pattern (maybe this weekend? Fingers crossed)

    49. I'll get swollen-headed if you go on like that!

I've been sewing since I was a child so have lots of experience, is all. Most people can sew if they have the right motivation to do it, and don't get put off by things not coming out how they planned (believe me, I have plenty of those moments - sleeves are my worst) - The stitch-ripper is my friend. And there are plenty of people on DoA who surpass me in sewing terms, not to mention patience for detail.

Another unfinished project I'm still working on is this one:[IMG]

There's another row of brad to sew in the jacket, there are tapes to add under the apron and bustle-drape to get it to hang and puff properly and (because I managed to make the collar too loose) I need to add a lace ruffle at the neck and matching ones at each wrist to fudge the fit.

    50. I, too, lurk on this thread and only come up for air once in a while. Lol. Teddy I love seeing your projects and the era you sew for!

I've been working on another Renaissance outfit, this time for an MSD child doll. I have a project journal called "Child of the Renaissance" if you're interested. Here are a couple pictures of my progress.
      This is the under-dress.

And this is the bodice and sleeves of the over-dress being tried on for fit.

    51. looks lovely. sounds like another project journal i'll have to pop over and subscribe to!

    52. Thank you Auntbear!

    53. Currently working on a Sherwani for my Sanjay (Iplehouse JID Daniel) - the lining is a deep teal and the brocade is a deep teal and gold on black.

Sorry for the dark pics, taken with my phone in the house :/

    54. I still need to make a bumroll for my doll's Faire dress. Plus, now that a friend gave me some uber-thin leather scraps, I can make some shoes for Lu and for some of my teeny OT dolls!

    55. Oooh! Beautiful fabric and great pattern-matching up the front

I found that a spare full-sized shoulder-roll made a good SD sized bumroll in a pinch.

      Teddy

    56. Thank you!

Thank you, @Teddy . I've worked with brocades before, but never did anything this complex (matching patterns). Made me VERY nervous!
