Sewing What are you currently sewing for your BJD Vol 11

May 3, 2015

1. I also made Sanjay (my Indian prince) a turban to wear at formal occassions (again, sorry for the pic being sideways). I watched a number of YouTube videos about 'How to Wrap a Turban' so I could see how its done. I ended up building it in sections (didn't wrap it afterall). I am going to create him a formal wear Sherwani (long brocaded coat). I will post pics of him in it after the outfit is completed.

2. Okay one more because I'm so proud of his coat.
[IMG]Skypirate 2 by steamwitch, on Flickr

I also made his clockwork hand and the swordbelt and sheath.

3. It looks so nice Steamwitch!
I can hardly wait to see the whole outfit Mooma, what a beautiful start!

4. SteamWitch, that coat is fantastic! I've got the same pattern, and you're making me want to use it, in spite of not having a character that it necessarily fits (not to mention that I have other priority costumes that need to be finished first).

5. Thanks, vicemage. It took a lot of work, but it was fun and definitely worth it.

6. I'm going to take the opening of the new volume of this thread as my prompt to get back into the habit of commenting instead of just lurking... we'll see how long it lasts.

The turban's a great start to the outfit - good luck with the rest.

And rightly so, it came out fabulous

Nicely accessorised too - that's where I often fall down.

Teddy

7. I can believe it, SteamWitch--I'm making that same coat in the full size for myself (or should be, but I've been falling down on the embroidery I want done for it), and even at that scale it's got a lot going on. If I end up taking inspiration from you and doing it at doll-scale, I'm not sure I'll go below the SD boys for it. At least one of them is sort of a sea captain (or will be someday), so maybe I'll have an excuse. :XD:

I'm trying to decide if I want to/have time to make a coat and a cloak for my two boys before a convention I leave for in a little more than a week, while also handling finals and starting a new job. If I get them made, they'll definitely be showing up here at some point!

8. Steamwitch, that coat is a jaw-dropper! :)

I only just ordered my first BJD a couple of days ago. She'll be naked when she arrives, so I looked at her measurements online and tried to make her a skirt. The first time (pre-checking measurements), I WAY underestimated and Päivi, my J-doll got to have that one. (Don't ask me what she's doing in that pic. I think she moved when I wasn't looking, LOL!) The one for my Mystic Kids Lillian is lying next to her for scale since I don't have my model yet. I hope it fits! I just winged the patt. I cut a rectangle of fabric, hemmed the bottom, then pinned in pleats to make it about 18cm (her hip circumference), stay-stitched the pleats and seamed the piece. Then I cut a rectangle of jersey, sewed the short edges together and doubled it over w/seam inside. I pinned the pleated skirt part to the jersey circle and stretched the jersey to fit while I sewed the raw edges together. We'll see how it fits when the new girl gets here on Tuesday!! :D If nothing else, at least she won't be naked. :)

9. The jersey should help adjust to the right size when it's on her, and, as you say, at least she won't be naked - and it looks pretty.

Teddy

10. Thanks! Yes, I was hoping the jersey would build a little forgiveness for sizing into the skirt. I ended up making her a top last night, too, also out of jersey. Then I crocheted her a hat. OMG, I can't wait to get my hands on her, LOL!

11. New thread!

Well I'm pleased to announce that after 4 months of waiting my first BJD Angel (RS An in WS) arrived on Monday. I've been working on fitting and refitting outfits that I made while waiting. Unfortunately I've had a bit of difficulty fitting female patterns to a MtF trans* doll so a few of my projects had to be relegated to my fashion dolls.

Today I got word from the face up artist I chose that she had an immediate painting slot open so off Angel's head went!

So here's my latest finished project: A 'Gibson Girl' type tea dress with Leg 'o' Mutton sleeves and lace insertions.

And here's a quick shot of them with their head and a corset and cami I made (pants and hoodie were from MoC):

12. Wow I love that lingerie dress! The insert lace looks amazing! :love I love that style so much...

13. I wanted to show the difference in the two pirate coats I made.

The first one was for the Steampunk sewing project. This is when I first scaled the pattern for an SD. I used a single number and scaled the whole pattern the same. The decorations and details were pure playful steampunk. It was a great coat with all the other gadgets attached.

I noticed that the coat didn't fit the body properly and I felt the sleeves were too short. I also didn't put in a lining, at the time I didn't even consider it. It came out well but I knew I could do better. I resized the pattern adding to the torso and a little to the length of the sleeves.

The second one got the wonderful corduroy from cthulhu and I had to line it, no question, it had to be a regal coat. The fact that I had matching leather was serendipitous. I found an inexpensive lot of gold trim on eBay and started work and this is what came out.

I'm a very proud mama of both coats but the second one is my bliss.

14. What a bunch of great sewing right off the start here!!
On resizing patterns, I learned the hard way- when resizing a shirt pattern for a 60cm boy to fit a taller doll, that saying oh the next guy is 5cm taller so enlarge accordingly didn't work out. Especially with the 70cm guys, they are longer in the torso & arms, as Steamwitch found out, while not that much bigger in the shoulders & waist. I've been using the images from the pattern instructions like y'all, figuring the average guy is 6' & working the proportion down to the cm height of the doll but after that you have to measure the pattern pieces to make sure the waist, shoulders are about right & add length as needed to the arms & torso. Same with the women's patterns in the Janet Arnold books...when the waist/bust are about right, the length of the skirts will tend to be short for the doll. Just more of that "learning as we sew" excitement that we all discover along the way!
PS: HI Teddy!!! Here's hoping we both get a chance to get back into the swing of things this summer. ;}

15. Both look lovely but that is definitly some snazzy corduroy Steamwitch. And the detail is so nice.
I went back and looked at Tripp's box opening dress and realized most of the bodice fit, it was just the shoulders that were too short. So I sliced it open and made it into a halter. It's still a bit funky in the collar, but at least it fits her now!

16. Lovely. Perfect for a summer garden-party!

Very nice.

I think they both came out well for what they were intended. I like the asymmetric detailing on the steampunk one, so the shorter sleeve length isn't really a problem as it's not a straight historical. The other one, well, I think it came out fabulous, and know that at least one of my boys will be jealous of it

Here's hoping - my share of the corduroy has been written into my dolls' story as 2 outfits already but I haven't made a start on actually cutting and sewing them yet.

Nice fix!

Teddy

17. Everybody's stuff is so cool! SteamWitch, those coats are AMAZING! I so wish I had to patience and know how to make something like that! I made a quick pair of shorts last night for my newest doll that I am not-so-affectionatly calling his dyslexia pants since I put them together completely backwards. I didn't realize the ties were on the inside of his leg until I was trying to hem the top. :/ Kind of a shame since it was the last of that fabric. At least it kind of doesn't show. ^^;;

18. That coats are very impressive SteamWitch! it have so many details and are so full of colors. :D There is much love in them!

How exciting it is to receive your first doll Geekmama, I remember when before receiving my Emma, I started sewing cloth to my Monster High. It is a good way to practice. The fabric is very pretty, very feminine. :)

wandereraimie :aheartbea The white dress is very cute! the sleeves are beautiful and I loved the lace details.

Nyxy Looks great! and I loved the textures of the dress. It looks very good for your girl!
Pen-Pen I feel making clothes for you dolls, helps strengthen to the bond with them :aheartbea

This is the first set of underwear I do to Emma, it has some things to fix it for a second time, but it looks pretty good. :)

19. {laugh!}

It sounds like me with sleeve - if anything is likely to go wrong when I sew, its' sleeves - inside-out, back-to-front, upside-down, and (occasionally) a mobius sleeve or two.

It looks great

Teddy

20. Nyxy, that dress is so pretty and lacy. <3

Pen-Pen, the shorts are cute! I can't tell there's problem from here. And you boy seems to be enjoying them very much! :D

Glucosa, wow! Nice job on the undies! They look really complicated - so many little pieces!! :)

21. Hi! I went to the thrift shop looking for some cheap summer wear and found these lovely things on the 1.00 rack. A fully lined rich purple ultra-suede suit (made in USA!), a dark teal self-lined suede fabric skirt and a pair of very cool tan print jeans that if my granddaughter want them made into shorts I get the legs, if not I get the whole thing.:dance

Wonderful material and so cheap! I can't wait to use them but I'm not sure for what yet.

Edit: I think perhaps Sherlock may need a purple dressing gown.

22. What wonderful finds! I think Sherlock is a lucky guy!

23. Wow fantastic finds!

Sewed the ribbons together to make the festive Fourth of July ribbon, the entire outfit and even the socks all in the last three hours... Pretty proud of it. ^^

My girlfriend got me some graduated fat quarter packs for my birthday so I cut out three waterfall skirts with them. The other two are in shades of purple.

26. A great collection of outfits! The 4th of July dress is awesome. :)

27. Thanks a ton. ^^ They were hard work but worth it.

28. Thanks you guys! I am a lace fiend so Tripp will probably get a black lace dress at some point too!
I love the waterfall skirt wandereraimie! I bet the purple ones look awesome!
Wow you're been productive Arashi Uchiha! They all look nice in their new clothes!

29. Thanks. ^^ I've been really having fun, haven't had much inspiration as of late so it's nice to get my groove back. I love what you've made too.

30. I've been working on the same project for a couple of months but not been able to show it until now. I made my Tabi Queen Amidala's red throne room gown for today's PNW BJD expo costume contest.

31. Quite a haul! Such is the way the fabric Stash gets out of hand (in my experience)

You've been busy! Aren't they a lucky bunch to get so many things made for them.

What a nice gift - the fun of receiving a girt, the fun of new fabrics, and the fun of the lovely things you make from them.

Oh, well done! I hope you got a good placing in the contest?

Teddy

32. that is very cool hannaliten!

37. Hi I am new to this hobby and plan to sew a bunch of clothes for my doll but I am also new to that hobby and am learning as I go. I am trying to make a bodice for my iplehouse Tania and am quite pleased with my progress but the fit isn't great. As you can see from the pic the bust is very pointy - I think from what I have read that is because the darts end to close to the appex of the bust and I also think maybe the darts are a little too high. But the other problem is the fit is very baggy in the upper chest - it maybe isn't obvious in the pic but between the neckline and bust is quite loose - I did some research but have not been able to figure out why that is and how to fix it. So I was hoping one of you lovely clever people might be able to give me some advice.

38. The ombre effect is really pretty wandereramie

If the bust dart is too pointy, missbree the dart probably tapers too quickly at the tip. You need to make the point at the end a little more shallow if you can, also you are right it would help to finish it a bit back from the point of the bust

looking at your picture it also looks like the two darts touch each other at the point? which would form a corner, they need to end back from each other a bit if that makes sense.

39. It looks like the fabric is trying to make a straight line from neckline to fullest point of the bust instead of following the shape of the body.... it might help to work out a pattern that either has a dart coming in from the armhole or the shoulder line, like this:
https://peggyspickles.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/img047-copy-2.jpg

Or possibly one that has a seam all the way up to the shoulder instead of a dart, like this: http://dalerae.com/PatternClass0208/Lesson4/princessnobust.jpg

or this : http://dalerae.com/PatternClass0208/Lesson4/princessfullbust.jpg

Either would give you opportunities for fitting/adjustment in the above-bust area

40. [IMG][IMG]

Second picture is truer to the color of the dress, first picture was taken with flash. I want to make a little white belt for the waist because the stitches are a little too obvious to my liking (I handstitch everything, I don't have a machine), and a little white pocket. If I can get some white cotton, then maybe I'd make an apron instead?

There are better photos on my tumblr.

• x 1
41. Very pretty. Perhaps you could do both to have alternative looks - with or without the apron.

Teddy

42. What I usually do for belts is usually just a ribbon. Classy looking and hides it.

43. @Arashi Uchiha Yeah, that's probably what I'll do if I can get ribbon thin enough. XD I just need to sew it down I think.
Teddy Oh! That didn't occur to me. I was assuming that if I put a pocket onto the dress, an apron wouldn't lie properly over it but I could easily just skip that and put the pocket onto the dress.

Thanks for the suggestion!

44. Xan is being smug now that he's got shorts/pants that actually fit. I'm trying to make a few in different fabrics before going back to the sparkly black because I have such little of it left.

45. The Amidala gown is incredible! Great job!!

46. Thank you! The lights didn't show up very well at the well-lit expo, but they're there.

47. Hi everyone!!! SO MUCH amazing sewing going on & I've been too busy to really enjoy it all. X0 WOW for the Padme/Queen costume!!!
Today I finally declared a doll holiday & managed to make the pants Ciaran's been waiting on since March....

I'm not happy with the elastic at the knees...when time allows that's gotta be changed, either to cuffs or a narrower casing.
But, I did make him real pockets!

I used the Adam's Harris "Watson" pattern, which is for a 67cm doll. I'd already down sized it for a 65cm doll but Ciaran is a Lumedoll Caph, 57cm guy... so after cutting it out & trying it on him at that size, I took a 1/4" off the top of the waist & tapered the side seams taking out 3/8" at the top & keeping the fullness from the hips down. After waiting so long, I'm happy to see him dressed at last!
PS this is my TX sewing room, where there are plenty of shelves & tables & lights. Definitely my favorite workroom of my multi state sewing venture. X0

48. Good plan.

Yay! - Especially the pockets.

Teddy

49. I've made Cyrah, my Cerisedolls Millie Choupie, some clothes, the poor dear only had a shirt and a legging ^^"

50. What a pretty shirred top

Teddy

51. hannaliten, that set is incredible!

The long shirt I was working on, as shown in the previous thread - were it was all uneven - I probably will scrap.
I fixed it so it is even now, but it just does not look that great on my doll. Both because it is not her style per se, but also due to bad measuring/sewing.

Then I set out to make some sort of sailor shirt... But ended up with this: ಠ_ಠ
[IMG]

I am getting flashbacks of an old Swedish(?) children's book I read as a kid.
It was about a man who goes to a tailor to get a suit, or pants - I do not quite recall, made or fixed. The tailor tells him to come back for it in three days, or something like that. And when the man returns, he asks if his suit/pants are done and get the reply: "It did not become a suit/pants".
- "Oh, what did it become then?" The man asked.
- "It became a pair of gloves."
- "I did not ask for gloves; I wanted my suit/pants fixed."
- "Come back in three days."
As the man returns to the tailor, he has made something different each time, so the man has to ask again and again for his stuff and is presented with something completely different (not sure how it ended either).

But that is how I feel I am when sewing recently! - I started on a sailor suit/jacket and then ended up with a witch hat!!

(Oh, and I also made her that over-sized shirt. I might put up the pattern here on DoA sometime soon, so keep an eye open for that if you are interested)

52. {laugh!} Sometimes it just happens that way... Sometimes I just decide to go into a project with no fixed end result in mind and let it go where it will, or sometimes I just have a vague end-result (a dress) and make up the details as I go along.

Teddy

53. So so epic- I kinda knew you'd win, I can't even think of a more amazing costume person or company made...

54. Made this dress for Yumeko a few days ago:

55. She looks like she's going to a 70's retro dinner party - what a great look!

Teddy

56. Yumeiro, at least that white shirt is still really cute! Off-shoulder tees are currently in vogue. ;)

57. Yumeiro - I am in love with that hat! It's amazing!
greg_kagawa - Beautiful dress! Did you use an existing patt or make your own? I didn't know they made such tiny pompon trim. It's adorable!

58. I made this cloak from scrap velveteen before Pippa arrived. It's too small, LOL! Guess I'll have to get a smaller doll. Heh. I haven't got the right ribbon for it yet. I think it will be black.

I also made her this top and skirt before she arrived, and they fit very well. That's what she mostly wears right now:

Took the pic before adjusting her eyes. She's looking a bit psycho.

And attempted my first Lolita style skirt (my hope anyway.) Again, this was made before she arrived, and before I trully appreciated how MASSIVE she was going to be, LOL! I was used to sewing for my wee Päivi, who is 1/6 scale. The skirt has a gap in the back, so I'm going to need to add another panel or something, because Pippa says it's just too immodest. The hat is another creation of mine. Yet another thing that's too small.:doh

I'm looking forward to making her some things that fit better now!

59. They should be fine now you have her there for fittings, it looks like she's going to accumulate a lovely wardrobe of home-made pretties, What a shame about the cloak - ah well, her loss is another doll's gain.

Teddy
