Sewing What are you currently sewing for your BJD Vol 11

May 3, 2015

    1. Everything looks just fine, Celiasiam! Keep it up! :)

    2. Thank youuuu that means a lot to me!

Here is a dress I did yesterday. it took me longer than expected, because I had to look at how to do the lines under the bust (how you call that in English?) to narrow down the top a little. And I couldn't fit the length of the skirt on the length of the top to sew it together, it was so hard! now my skirt is not as flare as I wanted it to be but well, I did what I could.

      Hope you like it!

Oups you can see I didn't sew the hem on the top very straight :(

    3. They are called darts in English, don't know why. It's a very nice blouse and I love the lacy skirt.

      I finished Chael's costume.

    4. Sooo... I finished Azuki's jacket and made some winged shoes. The dress is second hand by an unknown, but great artist, I only made her cozy jacket and her shoes.:)

and thank you @Nyxy for your kind words! I love lace and ruffles!!:aheartbea

    5. i love etymology of words! they are called darts because they are usually pointed or arrow shaped and the word "dart" is an old french term for an arrow or throwing spear. crawls back into nerd shaped hole ;)

    6. I didn't know that - it's fascinating.

    7. I made this dress for Tsukiko yesterday.

    8. very nice

    9. Everyone has made some really lovely things! I just finished a turquoise silk Regency gown for a friends doll, which is on a Loong Soul large bust body, she is about 70cm I think. What a challenge that was! The doll is shaped like Jessica Rabbit! All curve! Fitting the bust was especially tricky. I am still debating adding gold lace to it... if I can just find some narrow enough.

The next project should be much easier: I have an Iplehouse Lahela on layaway, in realskin with the small bust. I want to make her something really stunning. I am exploring a new ( to me) area of fashion, African haute couture. I have bought some bogolanfini, African fermented mud dyed cloth; black and white cloth patterned with masks, stripes and zigzags to make the skirt of the dress. I plan to sew it into eight to twelve long tubes to make a ribbon skirt, I will finish them neatly and attach them to a black waist band. The top will be bright red and strapless. I could either attach the skirt to panties, and just let her legs show, or I could make it an underskirt of red or another vibrant color. I think I will let those long legs show though. Very dramatic! I found a pair of classic bright red ultra high heeled pumps on Ebay that will really make the outfit. I have already made her a bright red natural coral necklace, a bold statement piece, I will probably add some red and gold bracelets as well. I may do some kind of fun, funky headdress as well. This one is really going to be fun, and something really different for me, as the stuff I usually sew tends to be ancient Egyptian, Medieval, or Renaissance... Regency I consider "almost modern". 21st century African is a definite divergence for me.

    10. SO poofy and wonderful, I love it. Where did you get the fabric?

    11. Wow that sounds like a beautiful outfit. I can't wait to see what you create for your new girl.

    12. Thank you for the "darts" explanation, I will keep that in mind. I should have known it came from a French word, being French myself. Actually in French "dard" means also the thing a bee uses to sting you. Make sense with the whole "arrow" explanation.

Greg-Kawaga your dress is so pooffy and girly, it is lovely!

I made a lingerie outfit yesterday! I think I will add some ribbons to do a fake garter.

Very easy tutorial made by Axel Couture (French forum)

    13. Thank you!

    14. :love so pretty
I'd love to make some lingerie for my girls, but I don't think any of their characters would wear it, ahaha.

    15. I finally finished an outfit for Kaitsu. I had previously made him a plain white kimono (before he showed up) but that's turned into his pjs. This is his first casual outfit.
All from thrift clothes. I made the fur wig too (and his undies)
The jeans are supposed to be baggy widelegs (old school raver, lol) and have a proper zipper and front&back pockets and belt loops. The top of the pants isn't quite fitting right yet so no pics of that. :sweat
      [IMG]
He just got a normal grey wig yesterday but I have to style the bangs out of his face. I didn't intend the white-on-white look, it was the first fur I grabbed.
The jeans took 2 sessions and the shirt was just under an hour.

    16. I love those jeans.

    17. me too, did you salvage the side seams and hems from old jeans? or else how did you get them so realistic?

      • x 1
    18. @Darkwingchick: me too, I like your work. The proper zipper (!), the belt loops, the side seams and the hems, all these details are so realistic looking.

      • x 1
    19. Thanks! :kitty2 *blush*

The jeans were originally kids jeans so the seams are a bit smaller. I reused the cuffs and the right leg seam. The left leg I had to recreate. Next time I'll get the seams straighter. Have to pick up some demin thread, small closures/snaps, and go on a hunt for proper tiny zippers.. For now it's a plain small yellow zipper.
And here's a bonus butt shot for all the nice comments! :kitty1 <3

    21. Ear-hoodie. Keeping up my current theme of pointy-out-ear-incorporating-headwear... This is made from a kids hoodie from the charity shop.

You can't see from the picture, but her hand doesn't fit in the front pocket as I neglected to make the holes big enough. But she can fit a thumb in there...

Her current wig is no good to wear with this hood as it (the wig) falls off and has a terrible glue-ridden parting. The over stitching on her shoulder seams are wonky, because I rush things too much. Oh, and the ear-holes, done as button holes, were a little tricky. As in I really battled completing the whole buttonhole stitching on my sewing machine, so finished it by hand.

But otherwise, I'm very happy with my first hoodie! I tested the hood with a paper pattern first. And I'm surprised the hood attaches to the neck in a reasonably tidy way. I did machine knit that on... Probably should have hand stitched it? How do other people add these kind of items to their clothes?

I also stretched the ribbing to the bottom and sleeves... But it seems not to have shrunk back much. Should I have used zig-zag?

    22. i like the buttonhole for ears idea rather that just making a gargantuan hood. using a zigzag to attach the rib might make it shrink back more but sometimes the narrow band of rib just doesn't have enough strength to pull the sleeve/body in. using rib with a bit of lycra in can help as can threading elastic into the rib. though personally i think it looks fine as is.

      • x 1
    23. Thank you, @auntbear yeah, it was the ribbing with the original sweater. I'll see what happens next attempt!

    24. That hoodie is adorable! I love how the ears poke out!

Here's something I finished up today, my first ever shirt (I'm pretty new at this)
The arms are a little too long and pretty baggy but I'm pretty happy that I managed to finish at all haha
I plan on making a vest and jacket as well so we'll see how that goes...

    25. @Winterglow I love the hoodie! The ear holes idea is great, I'm pretty tempted to swipe it! :sweat

@Meta OMG What a cute face! :XD:
His shirt looks great! Maybe a bit of ironing (rubbing on the edge of a table works too) to flatten the seams in one direction, otherwise I really like it! :3nodding:

    26. Whouaaa very impressive! I love the hoodie, this is probably my next sewing project too.

And Meta this is a really nice shirt, I really like the two-tone and the sexiness of the open chest :blush

    27. @Meta love the shirt too. The collar is spot on!

      And thank you @Celiasiam !

    28. Haha thank you for the nice comments! And I'll see if I can iron the seams down, that's a good idea!

    29. @Winterglow :aninja:

@Meta The quick & easiest way for small stuff is rubbing it on the edge of a table. Hope you don't mind me stalking you! :sweatHe's so handsome and you did the faceup yourself?? :D

    30. @Darkwingchick I don't mind at all! I'll try the table trick when I manage to pull off his shirt again. And yeah, I did his face up too!

    31. i've also heard that you can use an incandescent light bulb when it is hot to iron small stuff, though i've never tried it myself. i would test it on a scrap piece of fabric from your shirt first to make sure it doesn't melt/scorch it since you wouldn't want to wreck the finished shirt after you'd put that much work into it!

    32. When I take little doll sewing projects to my theater job, I have an extra flat iron that I take along with me to help press things (it lives in a modified oven mitt for when I need to move stuff around in a hurry and it hasn't cooled all the way yet). I wish it was a smidge smaller, but it works well enough most of the time. Will probably keep it when I'm "travel crafting" even though I've ended up with my mom's mini Clover iron she ended up not liking for her quilt projects.

    33. i have one of those little clover travel irons, but it's lost in the depths of my craft room so i end up never using it. to be honest i usually just use my full sized iron and a press cloth if needed. i like being able to control the temperature setting. what i really want is to make some miniature pressing hams and padded dowels for arms and legs. that has been on my to do list for quite a while, and just never seems to get checked off.they aren't a lot of fun to make, but would be oh so practical!

    34. That's on my list too! Sat here at work a few days ago and reduced some ham & sausage patterns so I could make doll ironing assists. My fingers would be oh so happy if I did. Pretty sure my left hand is going to plot revenge on me someday for all the craft knife and ironing "accidents" over the years.

    35. I've also kept reading that the mini irons aren't hot enough... Perhaps travel iron and mini pressing bits are best?

Oh, and that was what I meant to ask. How do the companies make the tiny clothes? Are there mini sewing machines and industrial mini irons?

    36. not sure about the irons, but i would imagine they just use standard size sewing machines. it's incredible what some seamstresses can do with practice/experience. i worked as a designer in a knitwear factory before i had my kids, and the seamstresses there were just amazing!

    37. @auntbear i thought so, like when you see footage of factory sewers, it's incredible! I've got a lot of practice ahead of me...

    38. Same here, although somewhere I do have a doll-sized sleeve-board I bought from Boneka some time back.....

    40. Nice. I like that the sleeves are pushed up his arms. He looks stylish.

    41. SteamWitch, thank you for your flattering assessment of my efforts.

    42. @zhanna1979 The pants look like they fit real nice and snug! And I like the white stitching on the shirt, it's a nice extra detail

    43. @Winterglow , thank you. I also think he looks great in that suit.Especially his long legs.

@Meta , thank you. Pants and shirt are made of elastic fabric, so good sitting in the figure. White stitching on the shirt made by hand. I also thought that it would be very interesting decoration.

    44. @zhanna1979 He looks great! Stretch fabric, good idea! The white hand stitching is a nice touch. I love his accessories and wig too, where did you get the wig?

Kaitsu got pockets on his robe, pj pants with proper inside pockets, and slippers w/non-slip soles last night. Considering I blew most of the previous night re-threading and adjusting the tension on the serger, didn't get much done. :|

    45. Old man slippers, lol. They are cute!
How do I make or where do I find t-shirt neck binding. I've exhausted my brain with key words on both eBay and Amazon. Help please.

    46. I just cut up a bunch of t-shirts this past weekend (doll projects and some future quilts), and some were bound with the same fabric as the main shirt, so it really just depends on the look you want I think as far as ribbing or not goes.

    47. Well I scavenged everything else so I guess t-shirt neck ribbing goes on my thrift shop list too. Thanks @Winterglow and @Realmling :3nodding: Happy hunting.

    48. very nice

    49. Wig from Leeke.
You're also sew nice clothes for you boy, especially i like old-man slippers

    50. Glad everyone likes the slippers, thanks! :3nodding:

@SteamWitch I've been lucky and salvaged it off shirts and hoodies. Most fabric stores should have it. Little foot-wide bolts.

@zhanna1979 I will have to check their wigs out, thanks!

    51. I live in the boonies and even the bigger city Hancock's (and hour away) doesn't carried it. Joanne's and other. fabric stores are far far away. But I do have plenty of nearby thrift shops to harvest from.

    52. I can save extra shirt collars and the like for you if you'd like @SteamWitch ... I have a mountain of t-shirts still to cut up for quilts and other projects.

    53. That's sweet @Realmling and I may take you up on that. My local shop are only open on certain days. I will gladly pay shipping for a few ounces of collars.

    54. I just finished a 3-piece outfit for Layla Celeste! It's recycled from a lacy shirt/jacket thing, I used almost all the fabric. There's an underdress, detachable overskirt, and bolero. 90% done by machine; the poofy sleeves on the bolero were done by hand, and the snaps on the overskirt.

    55. Very cool dress, Radioactive. I'm a serious sucker for white-and-lots-of-lace.

'Haven't gotten anything of my own done in ages, alas. Life has been getting in the way of sewing. I'm about to have to dive back into it though. In particular, into the hell of patterning for a doll I don't even have yet. o_0

I caved and ordered a pair of little Sugarble 1/6 nagas, whose human parts are apparently thinner than LittleFees, YoSDs or ickle-bitty Sooms... Meaning they won't fit into *anything* that I have here. <_<

Sewing from nothing but measurements always makes me antsy, but the snake-babies are gonna need some threads.

    56. Great jeans and zipper.
