What are you currently crafting for your bjd? Vol.3

Sep 30, 2020

    1. absolutely amazing !!!

    2. MB Lilac, your armour is exceptional! Your knight is so handsome wearing it!!

    3. Thank you @dbfalcao & @EI BJD. I'm really happy with how the shoulder armour turned out, but am not thrilled with his leg armour, which is too 'chunky' in my opinion, so I need to try those again, using another method.

    4. So many beautiful things! <3

    5. @MB Lilac He looks breathtaking, and I think you can pass off those plastic wrap marks as "battle damage." Who wants to see a guy in completely pristine armor show up to rescue you? Such a newb you'd probably have to rescue him!

    6. @Victoria Victrix - LOL. My thoughts exactly! Which is why I also dirty up the armour. It adds more 'character'

I added the buckles on his shoulders this morning. They don't actually work, since the front and back chest pieces are permanently attached, but I just wanted them to look like they are strapped together.

    7. @MB Lilac Incredible detail! EXCELLENT WORK!

    8. Thank you. Unfortunately I wasn't happy with the leg armour, so have decided to try again to make some new, slimmer armour.

    9. Starting the new year with some wig caps (and later, wigs) for my girls!
It's always a little funny to have the poor dolls sitting on my desk looking very mummy-like, while they (and I) wait for the glue to dry

    10. Wow this is stunning. I dont think i can even mold full plate for front without any decoration. Is apoxie good for carving small ornaments & detains on while itโ€™s soft? Can person without sculptors skills make use of it for like belt buckles for example or maybe simple jewelry for bjd? Im assuming you can drill into apoxie when itโ€™s dry?

    11. I find Apoxie very challenging to work with while it's soft, and much more difficult than polymer clay. But it can be sanded, carved and drilled after it's cured. I don't know if it could be used for a belt buckle or jewelry. I've never tried it.

    12. I'm working on wedding decorations + accessories and varnishing dishes for a wedding reception now. Big future project in May. ...Maybe

    13. I've been trying to bend glasses from wire every now and then but I feel like I finally had some success tonight! Still wonky but getting there

    14. How fun, I love your wire frames

    15. Thank you @jhiggi !

I've been experimenting with plastic frames as well. I'll need to buy some nail files to get the edges smoother next time I think, though.

I also made a yarn wig over the last week. I can't express how much better the whole process was using a bristleless silicone brush instead of an old cakey paintbrush. Everything from making the wefts to gluing them to the cap was so much cleaner and faster with it.

    16. Try a glass nail file, I think it would work well. Most of my dolls wear glasses, mostly because I do. I haven't tried making them yet. I think you are on to something. Try adding some rhinestones. I am a cat -eye sparkle rhinestone, or spikes on my glasses type of

    17. @jhiggi rhinestones are a great idea, I think I'll make some cateye frames next indeed :)

    18. I love the plastic frames!!!
A small slice of sand paper taped onto a skewer with double sided tape would work very nicely on smoothing the rounder edges! (I hope that explanation makes sense lol, it's a goldsmiths' tool but I don't know what it's called in english)
Or a fine round diamond file, sets of those can be found for pretty cheap at hardware stores :)

    19. @Ankka thank you for the tip - I know exactly what kind of a tool you mean (and also have no idea what the english term is for it hehe). Seems like it'll be really helpful so I'll certainly try it out :)

    20. @cobaltconduct you're a genius for that silicone brush idea. I always struggle with making things clean with the brush, and of course with cleaning it afterward. I've ruined several. definitely ordering one of these, though!

      • x 2
    21. The silicone brush cleans right off as well, even if the glue has dried on it a bit, so I hope that fixes the ruined brush problem for you, too! I found mine in the craft aisle of a dollar store, very useful dollar spent.

    22. What an amazing sewing machine for your 1/4 size bjds, MB Lilac!!!

    23. Thank you. I have two separate storylines planned for it.

    24. It's certainly fun to see what you repurposed to make it look so realistic, @MB Lilac

    25. Thanks. I started it last summer, but coming up with something for the fly wheel just seemed too daunting. Until I found a bad of Lego wheels at the local secondhand store, and there was one in the bag that was perfect. If it wasn't for that one wheel I doubt I would have finished it by now.

    26. Can't wait to read them!

    27. @MB Lilac
Wow! The sewing machine looks great! Well done!

I'm currently bothering my roommates by painting the 3D printing plates white.
I'm also tripping over the wedding tables I made recently.

    28. I just finished making my doll a shawl out of yellow yarn! I wanted to make myself a shawl, but I was a little worried about just going right for it, so I grabbed some random yarn I had lying around and did a little test swatch. It turned out so perfect for my 1/4 girl, so I blocked it to help the lacy pattern look pretty and it turned out so nice! I followed this pattern: For the Frills Easy Scallop Wrap

    29. I love this sewing machine and how clever you are to use all the bits and bobs to make it. I didn't even notice the tension disc was a snap until I read your makers blog. It just blends and my eyes see a perfect old Singer. I have one like this, in a bentwood case and shuttle bobbins, but it has been converted to electric. I still use it on occasion just to keep it working along with my treacle. I have quite a few sewing machines, but wouldn't call myself a collector. I think a have more dolls than machines, although it's close.

    30. I hand sewed the top and bottom skirt first time and stocking bought separately and cut it to fit my impldoll

    31. I have not really crafted much for my dolls but today I started working on a necklace and a flower crown for an incoming doll. I put together a mood collage with the clothes and shoes Iโ€™ve ordered, then added photos of the necklace in progress and inspiration for the flower crown.

    32. @NineOneThree Wow! I think you nailed it! Can't wait to see your new doll in her new clothes! What doll did you order?

      • x 1
    33. Itโ€™s Bach by Siso Doll. Sheโ€™s a Paola Reina size yosd, 33cm, kind of like a BB but smaller. I donโ€™t have any other dolls this size so I might have to order her some friends :XD:

    34. Dollies do need friends. Enjoy your new doll. Maybe she will tell you what dolly friend she prefers.

    35. This is one of the best doll things Iยดve ever seen! I love the fact that itยดs even threaded. I have had a spinning wheel in mind for my dolls but I think I might have to add a sewing machine to the list.

    36. Thanks! Yes, I wanted it to look as realistic as possible, and it really helped that I had a full size real one to 'copy'. I wanted to be able to thread it, so went to all the effort to make tiny wire loops, and I used a real sewing machine needle (cut in half) for the needle. if you really want something badly enough you can figure out how to make it. Good luck with your spinning wheel and sewing machine!

    37. I have been not crafting this summer as much as I usually do. Today I turnt a toy suitcase (a wonderful thrift store find) into a yo-sd carrier. I would love to take my smaller dolls out more, so now I have a stylish suitcase to carry them. :)

    38. really looking for a 1/3 scale horse. Where did you got this pls?

    39. @dbfalcao

I can't speak for where they got their horse, but I have that same one in a different color (working on painting it, in fact,) and another from the same company. It's a Battat horse, made for American Girl sized dolls. I found one for a few bucks at a flea market, and the other on ebay.

That said, they're a bit better sized for 1/4 dolls. My 1/3s are taller than the horse!

    40. I have the same horses as well! They are sold at Target in the US . The brand is My Generation and you can find them on eBay or the Target website. But I agree, finding them second hand is the best option :)

    41. Technically still in the WIP stage, but I'm crafting a white cane for my TianBa0830 Iris to use (her character has congenital blindness). The WIP is already usable for a minor photoshoot though!

    42. I'm crocheting Cammy some clothing!! I'm making her a little sweater with worsted cotton yarn... it's a little bulky which is okay, but I'm gonna get some fingering yarn or another small size from KnitPicks instead...

Also trying out sewing and a sewing machine for the first time too. It's hard for me even to make a tank top right now, but I know it will be worth it. There's a lot of patterns out there. Luckily I'm drawn to more casual / tomboyish styles, but I want so many clothes. Doll dressup is fun!

    43. I'm hoping to make some A-line skirts for my dolls soon! I bought some fabric to make a human-sized skirt as a gift, but accidentally got waaay too much fabric...so to my dolls it goes!

    44. I have been wanting a sofa for my BJDs for few years now, so I decided it's time to make one. I also made some fruit props, because most of my current food props were bakery goods. Sorry there is not a full picture of the sofa without a doll. The sofa is made from several different materials, but the main body is mostly very thick cardboard.

    45. The sofa is beautiful @daeki ! :o

I made a low-bun wig today! There are some glue accidents and the wig cap shows a little but I think it's pretty good. I mostly wear my hair like this as well so it's a bit funny to match with my doll :sweat

      A coat
      [IMG]

A teddy bear prop that I will use as attachment to a fur coat (not sure if it'll work though. We'll see)

    48. I got a commission! I'm working on a dress for a friend's Feeple 65. It's going to be one of Leetah's outfits from the comic ElfQuest.

    49. Leetah has the best outfits! Of course Wendy was a cosplayer so that makes sense.

    51. Wigs. Almost done. :kitty2

The leftmost one is a wig I finished last time I was making wigs and was the first wig I've made that I was perfectly happy with (well, crafting-wise, I do wish I would have used white or black hair instead of the turquoise... :sweat) so I was using it as a model for the next ones. The reason that doll is in wraps as well is because I was also attempting to make her a lime green wig without a fringe, however, basically everything went wrong with that one, so when I also realized that I didn't really even like that color nor style on her I just abandoned that project altogether. :sweat I'm glad I tried it out though since I did learn a couple more things of what not to do, and I'll probably be able to reuse the hair on some other wig in the future. :3nodding:

For the doll in the middle I'm actually making 2 wigs at the moment, one is fully dark brown to be her "natural" hair and then the other one is with the same dark brown on top but with purple underneath, similar to the black-turquoise wig, to be her "partly-dyed hair". So far I'm most happy with the rightmost wig though, I've never cut angled bangs before and I wanted the part to be a bit off-center unlike the other wigs so I had been worried how it would turn out but so far, it's exactly how I had envisioned it! :D Now, just... gotta not screw it all up while cutting and tidying up the longer part of the hair... :abambi:

    52. For those who make wigs - do you sew them or glue hair? Do you use ready-made headcaps or do them yourself? I still have to sit down and sew my wig. I've got hair and cap but am scared to even start :/

    53. Usually I glue the hair in. Recently I've been using silicon glue and it's better than cyanocrilate glue (what I used on my wigs some years ago). I also make my own headcaps. It's pretty easy, with a mesh. You can find lots of guides around!

Now for my own progress on things, I've been processing this coat. It's a really worksome design that is taking very long to complete. The design is kinda born out negative feelings too.... but I suppose the role of artwork is to make something pretty (or at least interesting) to see even if the source is something negative.

the chosen palette: yellow tulle embroidery, purple velvet, dark gold jacquard brocade

Above is an outdated photo. I ended up changing the upper part of that sleeve lots, removing the light brown trim. I kinda like it, but it was making that area too stiff, which caused drape to look awkward. Since fit is so important, it needed to go

This crown is super busy and heavy. I want the final look to be like a baldaquin-esque ornament. So it acts more so as a baldaquin for the doll than a crown per se. But I'll need to add extra support in the interior of the crown to make sure it sits tightly (right now it weights around 300 grams!)

    54. - I am creating my first wig, but I use the same caps that are used for BJD wigs, you can easily get them cheap on the net. I am wary of plastic caps with hair glued on, as I think they are prone to even more combing out, than the sewn on wigs. I use pre-wefted hair for now, but who knows, maybe I'll sew my own :P

      - impressive! You combined the elements together, right? A pro job in my eyes.

      - already looks astonishing. :)

    55. I do both, depending on the size of the doll. For MSDs I'll make a hard cap from tulle and Gemtack glue, then sew strips of mohair fringe, which I will reinforce the edge with Gemtack glue, then carefully glue the fringes onto the cap with a glue gun. I use Gemtack glue since it dries waterproof.

For smaller dolls I still make a tulle hard cap, but I glue the bits of mohair directly onto the cap with Gemtack glue to help keep the bulk down, as little dolls and babies only need very wispy hair...

    56. These dolls are adorable! I usually don't like babies dolls but these are so cute. I also like Island Doll Bru line :)

    57. Thanks. They are both Baby Elves by DreamHigh Studio. They are very small, so definitely didn't need a bulky wig.

      • x 2
    58. I usually make hardcaps but had my first softcap wig success today! It's a tad tight so it's a bit hard to get on but at least it doesn't fall off like most of my wigs do :sweat It was also nice to finish the whole wig in one go instead of waiting for glue to dry so I'll certainly go at it again :)

I can't recommend getting a 9mm hair curler enough, it's made all fringes look so much better.

    59. Great job, I could never tell it is a handmade one!

I need to get into sewing my wigs because honestly, the styles I want are not available. :/
