What are you currently crafting for your bjd? Vol.3

Sep 30, 2020

    1. Loving this purple dragon, my favorite color. This one will compliment your other one well. I admire your detail and workmanship.

I just finished my 1:6 scale kitchen...

    5. I LOVE this kitchen, it looks so good. It really makes me want to get started on Aurelie's... Soon, soon I will! Yours turned out so nice and inviting. (And the photos (?) outside the windows look so good, too!)

    6. @Idoru Thank you :). It would have been easier to built it instead of working with the plastic version, I guess. You are right, they are photos. If you make your's I am curious how it will look.

    7. Making nursery furniture for my tinies. The first item was too deep for a couch and not wide enough for a daybed, and has been scrapped for now. Today I'm working on table legs. I'm in no mood to by fancy crafting materials, so everything is made of cardboard, glue and origami paper already in the house.

    8. I'll make sure to post photos! I have a cute range and a few accessories, but I need to make the actual space and then some other things like tables and counters and so on. And I think you did a great job making over the plastic version, I'm impressed!

    9. I kept having trouble setting up the pub tables because table legs and doll legs (not to mention chair legs)were always in the way of each other. So I added a turntable beneath the tabletop now I can set the table down to accommodate doll legs and move the tabletop wherever it need to be. Plus it makes it easier to move dolls in and out of chairs without having to take the tables off the floor.

    10. That is a very clever solution !

    11. Oh that's so smart! What a clever solution to the leggy issue...

I've decided to put sewing on pause and am switching my attention to crafting for a bit, starting with this: baby's first all-wood chair! It's a bit short, I think, and wobbly—I definitely didn't make it perfectly according to instructions—but a great bg prop for photos, at least!

    12. I'm making another dragon. A purple one this time. She will be a 'steed' for a little warrior elf.

    13. Love all the beading. How did you do all the detail around the eyes? Clay and paint? I like this one even more than the turquoise/teal dragon. Thanks for sharing, another incredibly well made and intricately detailed project.

    14. Thanks. I first do a bit of really basic soft sculpture.....

Then build up the details with Aves Apoxie....

    15. Thanks for the visual, a picture is worth a thousand words. I used apoxie to mod a My Generation horse into a headless horseman stallion and sharpened the eyes and ears in much the same way. Also lengthened the legs by adding wood and covering with apoxie and paint.

    16. Apoxie is great stuff. I don't exactly like working with it, but it cures so strong, and paints beautifully, so it's worth the effort.

    17. @MB Lilac - Oh that's so fun to see how you made your new dragon! As always, you are a marvel! :abow:

    18. Do you have any pictures of this? I would love to see it!

@MB Lilac I never would have thought to add apoxie to a soft sculpture! I cant wait to see him/her all finished. are you going to use apoxie for claws and feet too?

    19. I have pictures from the PNW expo, where I actually won 1st place in the costume contest for my headless horseman entry several years back now, but I am hopeless at posting here. I will ask my grandson for help next time he is here.

    20. @Maud - Yes, I use Apoxie for the claws as well. I pre-make the claws with holes for sewing them onto the toes. I use beads on the ends of the fingers for the Apoxie to hold onto. I describe my process here - Beaded Drumsticks

    21. Here she is all finished, with Phairby, a DHS House Elf....

      • x 16
    22. She is stunning and seems to pose well and looks very stable. I need a house elf, my sewing room needs some tidying up, but more than likely my house elf is responsible for the missing bob'-n-bits!

    23. What a marvellous dragon, MB Lilac! Phairby looks terrific with her!

    24. Brilliant! What else can one say?

    25. Last fall we replaced a section of old fence. My husband was planning to burn the old planks. Seemed like a shame to me, so I made a 1/3 scale picnic table. Low stakes for my first ever woodworking project; it cost nothing but time and I learned a lot.

These are the plans I used, though I altered them a little--this table is 22" long and 14.5" high.

It's going to go great with my tent and other camping gear. Now that I'm no longer intimidated by the larger power tools, I'm eyeing the rest of that pile of wood and wondering what else I should make!

    26. That's a fine looking picnic table, Havra!!

    27. Oh wow, that picnic table looks nice for your first woodworking project!

    28. Love your table, I love the empowerment from learning a new skill with new tools. Excited to see what you make next.

    29. Benches, Adirondack chairs, a deck, a deck-platform for their tent, and a lemonade or fruit stand.

      • x 1
    30. @Havra - that table looks amazing! I'm so envious you have the space to make and store props like that, our apartment isn't even big enough for us to have a dining table! (well, it might be, if we had a slightly smaller rabbit...)

    31. Thanks @El BJD, @light the light, @jhiggi! Considering cutting a bit off the legs. I think I made it too tall, lol.

@Victoria Victrix All great suggestions, thank you! I'll have to think on it while I wrap up some other projects I abandoned to do this one.

@Girrl That must be some rabbit. :aeyepop:

I'm blessed with the space, I know. Though my husband had to point out, "With the time spent on this, you know you could have made us a real picnic table?"

    32. Too often, it takes longer to make the miniature version than the full sized one, Havra!

    33. Really nicely done!

    34. I have little knowledge of jewelry-making for the doll crew -- metal chain jewelry, that is. What I have experience in is macrame and knotwork. Why I took so long to make Adhara and Guórén's hippie accessories, I don't know. But I finally got my hands on neutral-colored cords that work well with the various beads I've been hoarding through the years, and a two-day knotting spree ensued! While these are belt accessories and a necklace for 1/3 scale dolls and up, I found that some of them could also be used as bracelets for full-sized humans.

Not the best photo of the accessories in action because the lighting ain't that good, but you get the idea:

    35. Oh they look great! I love those beads, too--I can see why you hoarded them for so long, but this feels like a VERY excellent application. They look great in action, too, good lighting or not. ;)

      • x 1
    36. @Idoru Many thanks! I confess I no longer even know what material some of the beads are, cause of how long they've been in storage, plus my tendency to snap them up simply because they might work for a future project. :sweat A few are plastic, but most are comprised of either actual stone (maaaaybe agate or jasper), boxwood, or lampwork glass.

    37. I busted out the UV resin and made Jack, my new minifee, some eyes! It turns out I didn't have as many 14mm eyes as I thought (the curse of mostly collecting smaller dolls), but I DID have some 14mm eye bases from Synthetic Ephemera. The bigger size also gave me the luxury to try out using some polymer clay to add texture to the irises... not that you can see it in the final eyes. There was a bit of trial and error, and these are far from professional quality, but I'm really pleased with them!

The yellow pair is REALLY bubbly because I... forgot to do anything about that. Whoops. I was a bit bummed with the bubble in the sclera of the brown pair, because they turned out well otherwise I think, but...

You can't see it when they're in! Success!

I've only made a handful of eyes in my time, so I'm really happy these turned out well. Certainly well enough for Jack to wear them until I get around to getting him another pair!

    38. Looks good to me. I have yet to try eye-making, it might turn out into another money pit to get everything I would need, but it looks fun!

      • x 1
    39. Thank you! Yeah, it's definitely another hobby money pit... Not as much as I was afraid it might be, but you can really go down a rabbit hole with it. Definitely fun, though!

    40. Last night after midnight I decided to give some attention to my anthros who have been hibernating in a shoe box for almost a year :sweat google memories reminded me of the last times I took cute pictures of them.
Anyway, Bilbo (Cocotribe wake up ruby) is my most established/favorite so he's leading the way on this project. I'm working on some bedding for them now in Bilbo's taste. It feels like a nice way to celebrate fall, making a cozy nest of blankets :XD:

    41. These are amazing! Thank you for including the video, I'll have to try making some of these for my own dolls!

    44. A lot of 1/4-[IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] 1/3 dolly necklaces and a few chokers while waiting to make my first bjd payment (bank holding funds);;;;;;(

    45. I finally got around to finishing the 1/6 scale couch I've been working on for a while. It's 100% sewn using no glue at all because I can't be trusted to be neat with glue.
It's based on the 2 person vimle couch from ikea and both seat and back cushions are removable so I can make slip covers for it in the future.

      • x 18
    46. Whoa, this look so good!! And it's ALL sewn without any glue at all? Kudos to you!! That's impressive.

    47. Thanks. I "cheated" a little. It's constructed of little pieces of cardboard with a foam baby wipe on top then I stretched fabric over that and assembled all the pieces. The only pieces that are stuffed are the back cushions. It's fairly sturdy and very lightweight.
It's not the quickest way to do things for sure but I can't get glue all over it when I'm not using any so that works for me

    48. Today I've sewn the wig for my Deavon like I planned months ago. I bought some fancy alpaca hair for it even.
But my god, was it difficult! I feel I just needed to look at it funny for it to tangle...I bet one could felt with it, too, no problem.
It took the whole day, which is why I could only take indoor lightning photos, but I will definitely take some better photos when I get the chance.
I'm happy with the result though, only problem is that the wig is a bit slippery and I only have a 7-8 wig cap. I will need to get a smaller one, or maybe some velcro stickers (although those might be dangerous, considering the hair already wants to stick to everything). I nonetheless crammed the wig cap in there and it'll do for now. Stays on.
I think I also managed to clean up most of the fluff:sweat
I miscalculated how much I needed and have enough material for another wig left, Maybe I'll glue one and compare the results.

      • x 7
    49. This looks great!

    50. Wow that wig is gorgeous. :love
The wig I bought for my first doll was too loose but I managed to fix it by sewing some thin elastic in the back half. Maybe that could work here as well? That way you can avoid velcro messing up the hair.

      • x 1
    51. @jhiggi @BlackAmera Thank you!

Unfortunately, the wig isn't really loose, just slippery. The wig cap has elastic all around and the material I used for the cap itself also has some stretch. I will need something with grip. I'll get a silicone head cap in the right size so it doesn't peek out from under it, Im sure that'll wirk fine.
I did try to take a better picture today, but it was too windy:sweat

    52. I hope the silicone wig cap works out. I don't recall ever dealing with slippery wigs for other reasons than them being too big so I've been lucky there :)

    53. I finally, fiiinally got around to making Ryoma some shoes! I wanted him to have waraji but I couldn't duplicate the weaving method in miniature, so I cheated by making a rubber+felt footbed and then whipstitching the edges with hemp cord.
I'd love to get him some actual split-toed tabi for under them but this is fine for now.

    54. Volks has tabi socks in stock now if ryoma is around sdgrb to sd17 sized!

      • x 6
    55. @kotoshin The 'tabi' from Volks are the same ones that come in their outfit sets, and they're just jersey-knit ankle socks, no toe separation :,) Same problem with their zori, they decided to make the thong fit over the end of the foot instead of between the toes like a real sandal.
I figure eventually I'll find a pair made for ichimatsu ningyo that'll be a close-enough fit.

    56. I'm currently trying to work out my own patterns for a turtleneck tshirt, nothing too fancy. I'm trying to make underclothes so I can hopefully make some lovely armour

    57. No toe separation but advertised as tabi!? /removes from saved basket

      thanks for letting me know!
