What are you currently crafting for your bjd? Vol.3

Sep 30, 2020

    1. @redsixwing Ooooh I LOVE your wig!! Is it yarn? It's just gorgeous .. and I love the bead treatment. Did you thread them onto the hair as you went, or embellish after doing the braids?

      • x 1
    2. Thank you! It's crochet thread, which is just very fine yarn. The beads are sewn on after, as they're too little to go on the thread.

I'll post another pic when I get all the beads on!

    3. I resin poured 6mm eyes for my tiny Granado dudes. Yes, I used both a magnifying lens and my husbands microscope.

    4. @redsixwing I love your wig too! The beading is so pretty and I love the use of crochet thread! I once beaded a wig using a needle threader. I threaded the bead on the loop of the threader and then put a shank of hair through the threader loop and pulled the hair through the bead. I see your beads are too tiny to do that but it was a fun discovery and I thought I would share.

@SteamWitch Awesome work! I would love to see how you did that!

    5. That's a brilliant method! If I try s beaded wig on actual hair I will remember that.
      And thank you :)

    6. Well, here we go. I dug through my yarn stash and found a 100% alpaca yarn in a color that's about right for what I want. (I wasn't likely to knit with this color anyway, so I have no idea why I even bought it--it must've been deeply-discounted because it's a luxury yarn!)

I have now combed it out with my pet brush. It came out just about the right length for my boy and SUPER fluffy. :3

Next step: clearing the dining-room table so I can glue the wefts and make a wig cap.

    7. I've been working on improving the saddles for my OG horses, and making them new bridles.

    8. @MB Lilac You must be so pleased with the results. What a transformation! The horse looks more sleek outfitted with a proportional harness and stirrups. He looks like he's thinking in the first pic--"just no" haha

    9. @El BJD - Thank you
@tinyseams - LOL. The horses have been transformed from a little girl's toy, to a steed worthy to be ridden by my dolls. The horses look so much better now, and since all of them have nice saddles and bridles I won't have to keep switching things around - which was a total pain.

    13. I made a bunch of tiny stands for my Whispering Grass Forest Dwellers, since I couldn't find anything suitable online.

Pardon the camera blowouts - to get the texture to show, I had to play with the exposure some.

    15. I'm making a JSK based on a pattern I got at Requiem Art! It's donut themed :) I also want to try to make a chair but idk, I've neve made furniture before :(

    16. I'll try! The worst that happens is a mess, right?

    17. I'm making some small eyes for my new girls Tsuko and Tsumi n.n

    18. I bought some wooden planter stands from hobby lobby that are perfect for a table and chairs for my SDs, but they're pretty rough, so I think I'd like to sand them. My dream is to make a 1/3 scale cafe diorama. I have a lot of work to do!!

    19. I wanted some cheap non-staining shoes for my Dollfie Dreams' matching outfits, so since I had the materials on hand, I decided to customize Volks' $9/pair vinyl shoes.

Here's the starting point. They're rotocast, so the heels are hollow and kind of flexible. I chose white to avoid color transfer in case they ever wear these without stockings in the future.

      I forgot to take WIPs...
I drilled into the heels from the bottom, inserted 1/8 brass rod as reinforcement, and cemented the rod into place with urethane resin. Then, once I had a rigid armature, I could start adding epoxy to create a spool heel shape. This gives them a little more stability and a touch of anachronism. Had to do a lot of sanding to get everything level. The last step was masking the inside and using Duplicolor Vinyl & Fabric Paint to color the outside.

Tada~ They'll have mary jane straps, but I'm making any embellishments removeable so I can swap them for different styles.

    20. they look very nice :-) good job.

    21. I finished one of my New Years resolution projects~ One of my goals was to get all my dolls properly displayed, so I bought a three-pack of Kaiser model 4001 stands for my tall boys. This model of stand only comes in white and they're kind of ugly, but they were inexpensive, extremely sturdy, and didn't involve shelling out for international shipping. I also like how they match the minimal design of the Obitsu magnetic plate when they're in use.
      Here's what I started with.

I sanded the white powdercoating with 200 grit sandpaper, Bondo'd them to hide the sheet metal construction and set the minimum adjustment height, and primed the areas where I'd applied filler.

Then I sprayed everything with wheel paint from the automotive supply store. It dries to a very hard finish, so it doesn't get chipped or rub off on the soles of feet. I also cut down and reshaped the waist holder wire and covered it with shrink tubing to make a soft surface that won't snag on delicate fabrics.

      Everybody stands! It doesn't show so much with fwooshy robes, but black is more camouflaged against the wooden table. Forgive Ryoma his dumb pose, his obi's riding up into his armpits ;u;

    25. Hello everyone, it is really nice to see all your creations (and talent)! I am really impressed by the work I see.
I would like to join you guys here and write along if that is allowed? I just finished making a tote bag. (I will upload a picture later)

    26. Go ahead! This type of thread is open to every one.

    27. looks nice. you need to open custom orders for small accessories like this. well done.

    28. Thanks, but no; I have enough on my plate. They are not hard to make, though, anyone could do it.

    29. So last fall I made this witches hat for one of my girls

      [IMG]Supia Ariel4 by Vampire Angel13, on Flickr

And I....don't remember how I did it?? I'm pretty sure I made a pattern, but no idea where that went. So I downloaded a pattern off the old interwebs and have altered it (with my limited knowledge of patterns and sewing and anything at all).

      It sort of worked!

[IMG]Witchy by Vampire Angel13, on Flickr

If you ignore my bad sewing (I don't sew) and the fact that I always just use whatever color thread is already threaded on the needle. I've since ruined it trying to glue ribbon to it. My glue is not gluing. And it's all over the hat. I found some black glue, and that is on the way to me now, so I'm hoping if I attempt the ribbon again it won't look as bad.

But the pattern works! So I think I can amend it to make differently shaped hats so they're not all the same!

    30. I'm not sure this counts as crafting... maybe pre-crafting. Lol. I'm on a pretty tight budget right now and want to sew some clothes for my doll, so I've been going through my closet and storage bins and finding all my clothes I no longer wear or am willing to give up that would be suitable fabric for doll clothes. I've collected quite an assortment of fabric and all of it is well worn and washed so it's very soft and drapes well, and no worries about dark colors staining.

These came out gorgeous. I would have never thought to reinforce and change the shape of the heel.

Beautiful work! Does the necklace have a clasp? I've been trying to figure out how to make a clasp to scale that is still sturdy.

    31. I love the headpiece a lot as well as the necklace.

    32. I'm working on making a 1/4 scale chess set using silver chess men charms available online. I cut off all the charm loops at the tops, and since they are all silver, I added black paint to one set, and cream paint to the other.....

    33. You had me wondering about BJD DIY hair accessories, so I searched the Workshop. While I couldn't find any tutorials or patterns for BJD hair accessories, there ARE many YouTube videos under "diy bjd hair accessories". A hair accessory is fun and fast to make. You can use all sorts of items and you don't need a sewing machine! Heck, some projects don't require sewing at all!
I hope you'll consider making your own unique hair accessories!

    35. For this one I used a small, but human sized clasp. Since it is hidden under the collar of the blouse it doesn't bother me and it's pretty easy to open and close.
For historical and fantay stuff where a modern clasp won't work I sometimes make a small hook out of wire and just hook it into a corresponding ring at the other end. It can be a bit fiddly to close and it's not as secure, but there is no real limit to how small you can make it so it's very discrete and works even for really tiny dolls.

For things that need to be very secure and where the look is very important, making the necklace without a clasp is also and option, but it requires the head to be removed to put it on and take it off, so it's not as fun for things you want to be able to play around with alot.

    36. Yes, I've tried making tiny wire hooks but they're so weak. And the smallest lobster claw I can find is 5 or 6mm.

    37. I don't know what to tell you, then. Try a different metal for the hook, maybe? And give it a whack with a hammer at the bend to flatten it a bit. That will make it stiffer. Other than that I have no advice for you.

    38. I'm still on my witch hat kick - since I wrecked my prototype I decided to try using some fabric stiffener on the end to see if I could make it look slouchy.

[IMG]Hats! by Vampire Angel13, on Flickr

It worked ok I think. You can see (other than all the cat hair) that it did leave some white-ish residue (because I guess it's essentially white glue)...but it's barely visible.

A shorter one I didn't like so much, so I cut the brim off and now I do like it. (It looks kind of like my human-sized one. But y'know...not as nice. At least I started using black thread.)

[IMG]Hats! by Vampire Angel13, on Flickr

Hats are one of the only things I ever make for my dolls...someday I'd like to do it better.

    39. I like your witch's hats. If you wanted to do more you could hide the glue with all kinds of spooky decorations. But please keep at least one in basic black, bet your dolls love them that way!

    40. Making more beer for the Pub, including an overturned bottle. Also making some more dark eyes, some dark experimental work, woooooooooooo:shudder.
Anyway, it's mosquito season so I'm avoiding the outdoors. I have two guys that need faceups but I am waiting on my special watercolor pencils to arrive so I'm doing this instead.

    42. I try myself on a new wig this time it should be a short one, but Im not sure if it is not a bit to short for her. ^^
I hope I can finish it tomorrow, have to make more white wefts.

    43. A crib for Sikudhani, mostly using packing materiel from Amazon Fresh.

    44. Ooooh! What do they use? We don't have Amazon Fresh here, but I just made bedding for my Shiwoo using WoolCool that came with my groceries order. It's natural sheep's wool. I also have some synthetic stuff that I plan on repurposing for mattress stuffing because it's a bit stiffer.

    45. it’s mostly just cardboard
They typically insert panels into the bottom of the paper bag to add more support for heavier items like milk and the times I’ve ordered eggs they came in this cardboard “tube” (I say tube and not box because the ends are open) and I’m use these tubes for the base and the panels for the sides. And I’ll use the paper bags to papier-mâché the whole thing before I paint it. I might make a project journal.

    48. For some reason my picture doesn't show at the moment - it did just half an hour ago. Anyways, @Raquel Nicodemo , she's an Iplehouse Elin.

    49. @ResinRapture, thanks!, I couldn't find her among your dolls in your profile.

    50. @Raquel Nicodemo I have a couple more dolls than the allowed number in profiles. ;)

    51. Adorable stuffies and very well made. I love wool felt!

    52. @VampireAngel13

Oh that shorter brimmed one is adorable!!! You could try tulle for the band on your hats as it has a cool effect and it covers glue boo-boos fairly well. I also add wire to my brims and cover them with ribbon. I love the slouch over one eye effect, Scene.
