Weirdest Thing You've Seen a Company Do?

Mar 10, 2020

    1. The little snake and the big snake! If it was just one it'd be weirder, but two just makes it funny. It should have been all snakes

    2. If you all thought the trouser snake peen from DF-A was strange, get a load of the elephant peen from DF-H:wiggle:lol:.

I admittedly absolutely love the optional moveable manbits. Oh, the helicopter peen from Nobility Doll (and those squishy nipples:XD:). Besides them and Dollshe—a few of Ringdoll's larger male bodies have that strung heli-peen as well (I couldn't tell you exactly which ones, although I do know the RGM-3 has it). Popodoll has what I like to call the socket-peen—it's not strung or magnetic, but has a socket that the peen can swivel around in.

I'd label this as more unique and cool than creepy, but Dragonshell Doll has one head sculpt that has a bult-in light socket (?) (or a spot to install a small LED light anyways) at one of the temples.

Also—that preggo doll? Why'd she have to have such an unsettling Stepford Smile? Methinks that pregnancy might've been unwanted (Plus, that baby is too small, which just adds to the uncanny valley factor).

    3. Add Spirit Doll to the list of companies that have male bodies with detachable dude-bits... Or "gleefully disturbing fridge magnets", as they're known to one of my goofball friends. (Yes. She really has stuck them to her refrigerator door. It was hilarious. )

Also, Doll Chateau's A-03 male body has strung bits... which is also hilarious. And really, really makes my Inner Twelve year-old snicker every single time I go to change Scribe's outfit.

    4. Im so glad we got here, I was mentally screaming “PRESS PAPILLA!!! GOOD FEEL!!!” Until this post  what a freakin classic

YES this is exactly what came to my mind, but I had no idea what it was called and didn’t even want to begin to embark on googling “Bjd anime starfish chibi penis”. :horror:

Anything that feels like it’s distilling a doll/character/etc into little more than “this thing is/has a PENIS penis penis” hits me as a hard “no”. Ditto to the penis doll mentioned earlier, and this little chibi, where someone decided that knowing these dolls have a PENIS penis penis is more important than these dolls having hands/feet/literally any feature besides a face.

I also own the Granado vigor body “handy” parts as mentioned earlier, despite deliberately not paying for them. It’s not just a hand, either, there’s actual sculpted peen and balls cupped into it, as well. That’s another body with sculpted pubic hair, too.

also, Speaking of dolls with penises that make you go “wow that was a design choice,” I cant believe I got through this whole thread with no mention of Dollshe Kahn. I’m glad that comes off, can you imagine trying to put little dolly pants over that? I’m glad most of the... ambitious :chibi... peens come off. I just don’t care about that.

I’m sure I’ve seen some weird stuff over the years, but nothing else is really coming to mind right now. At least nothing I define as weird... I love the out-there designs, usually!

obligatory disclaimer that real people with penises are beautiful and no commentary on doll peens is intended to translate to real ones

    5. There are entirely too many photos of someone holding a doll peen and stringing that thing onto the doll on that sales page:XD: Seriously, I get that Mr Dollshe is proud of his stringable peen, but about 3 or four shots would have sufficed to show the procedure:sweat

Now then, we keep talking about boy bits, how about some wtf girl parts? I don't know who makes these exactly, just that it's not Volks themselves but rather other companies making "aftermarket" parts to fit Volks Dollfie Dream bodies, but every time I see these DD option busts on Yahoo!Japan I cringe. The names too, "Mammo 60 Tension Milk", "Mammo 50 Extreme Milk" etc (according to google translation). I get that they're geared towards fetishists, but still.

    6. Christ. I thought I was prepared for how big they could be.

      I was not.

    7. Bwhahahaa, I hadn't seen that doll but the literal trouser snakes make me want to buy it. It's even funnier that there is a little snake version too. It's just so 'why?'

Now that one really is 'WHY?' :sweat I mean, I get the whole elephants are well endowed thing but I feel like i'm missing some sort of reference here?

That was my thought too, it's like we're seeing it done in loving slow motion

      ^ This ^ :?

And speaking of fetish dolls, something I find not so much weird but highly off putting. There's a certain doll clothes & shoes maker and they keep using a straight up hentai doll (complete with that awful saggy, tongue lolling out expression that make it look like the poor woman has just been brained) for their promo pictures. And I don't know why they need to use that doll as they have several other normal non-fetish dolls they use to model their stuff.
It's a bit of a double off put as i hate that 'classic' hentai face with a passion, it always make me feel kinda ill when I see it. And second, given that hentai is a specific genre of porn that focuses on under age girls and young women being sexually abused/ assaulted/ humiliated etc by adult men then it's says something about someone who owns one. It's a shame as their stuff is really nice but I can't stand looking at their pictures in case I see *that* doll.
(Just to clarify, it's absolutely fine for someone to own a fetish doll, I just find it a weird choice to blatantly use it to publicly advertise normal clothing & shoes, esp when it looks so jarring next to the normal dolls in the pictures)

    11. After many laughs...
I agree with those Anaconda jjs.
When I was looking for boys to buy, those one were for sure the weirdest thing I have ever seen but.... in a good way? I don't know. Got kind of interested to buy one Anaconda boy in the future! Maybe could mod the Anaconda and transform into a headpiece, I don't know... To make an "uniconda". Just funny thoughts.

Pregnant doll I don't think is weird at all, is nice. Really interesting. When I was little girl, I had a giant preg doll that could remove the belly, remove the baby... Maybe that's why I don't find this mama doll creepy. :wiggle

Dollshe's suspended jj were another surprise.
As I'm just returning into the hobby, seing all those interesting parts from both sides is really cool and odd in the same time.:XD:

    12. The weirdest thing I've seen a company do
is absolutely Dollshe's business... "method". Whatever the heck is going on there. Pretty dolls but I've sworn off any more of them forever unless secondhand because WTFrick.

    13. Anything more specific than the long wait times?

      • x 4
    14. The incredibly unpredictable long wait times, the bouncing from project to project- okay I do that myself but never after I've taken someone's money in earnest of goods. It's very odd.

      • x 3
    15. Ah interesting, thanks for sharing. I hadn't quite gleaned that kind of thing was happening from what I had read.

      • x 2
    16. I'm almost afraid to defend Dollshe because so many people love to hate him for how the business is run - and I myself have complained a lot in the past over the long wait-times and that was before we had a glimpse into the way he does things - but I kind of see where he's coming from. I've been tricked into doing my fun hobby as a "job" before, and it literally becomes the hardest thing in the world to do once you have no choice. And once you've made that commitment, you have no choice, you have to do it. And it sucks.

Dollmore once broke down the cost of a doll for me. They barely make anything off each doll they sell. Apply that to Dollshe and his infinite sales. I have no idea if he has any employees or not, but if so, that person(s) has to get paid. If he's like any other human in the world he probably got all excited when that first paycheck came in and spent it all on on cost of living and maybe fun stuff (and Ferrari's) and then found he needed more to finish the order...so another sale came along to pay for the first and the loop was born. And as we know, it is the song that never ends. That has to be super-stressful to be in the middle of. Hence all the other side-projects. He needs self-care too.

And I'm not saying it's wrong to hate how he does "business" or to be really mad - I'm still bitter over my first 14 month wait, and people are paying for things and they have every right to expect them in a reasonable time - i'm just suggesting a little good faith and understanding. He hasn't scammed anyone yet - which is kind of amazing - and always seems to be understanding when people want to cancel, and most people buy in full knowledge that they're going to be waiting at least a year for their dolls, and the ones who don't buy with that knowledge probably should be doing more research before doing so. I mean, that's sort of the theme of DOA - do your research! One look at the DS discussion thread or waiting room is all anyone needs to know what they're getting into. And because there are so many sales the market really is saturated with Dollshe, so finding one second-hand isn't hard, so there is almost no need to deal with him at all.

I'll stop now...since this is kind of off topic anyway - and I don't mean to call anyone out. But from what I have learned about BJDs over the years and my knowledge of artists as people in general (and because if it were me I can't guarantee that I wouldn't do things the same way sadly) I wanted to stick up for him.

    17. @VampireAngel13 I think what you've shared here is really valuable, so thanks for taking the time to write it out. Crossing business and artistry is an enormous challenge....

Bringing back the theme of "do your research" about what you're buying is also important... and it gets highlighted a lot in other kinds of contexts, so your use of it in this one is helpful (in that it's less about protecting oneself in this case, and just more about caring for the inner workings of things/having respect or care for what happens behind the scenes). The information is out there, such that if you don't want to wait for a doll like this, you don't have to make that choice. On the other hand, if it speaks to you... yes, you are paying for a product... but you're also paying for a work of art. For a lot of people, this business IS their life's work, and we have the opportunity to own those things in our own lifetimes. It's really quite a blessing.

And under the assumption that the order eventually gets filled, it reminds me of something someone said in another thread about the crafting process. Essentially the idea was that it's okay to go slow with the hobby... the dolls will wait for you. They aren't going anywhere. If this is what you love taking part in, it's okay to want some things to arrive quickly, but it's also okay to take your time and enjoy the wait, or enjoy the process of learning, or redo an outfit a bunch of times to get it to be exactly what you want to be. Slowing down can be challenging, but also very rewarding, and it can really help us to see things in a different light sometimes.

Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk :kitty2 ... @VampireAngel13 's comment just kinda made me get all zen about stopping to smell the roses, and enjoying the journey, so I wanted to share my thoughts as well.

      • x 5
    18. I have to agree that Dollshe wait times are odd in how long and inconsistent they are. I've been waiting two years and three months for the only doll I've ordered from them, a Fashion Tiny Hound, in a Honey resin tone. I ordered through an American dealer and I've come to think of it as a "someday my prince (doll) will come".

And to add something to this thread, I often like many elements of Doll Chateau's event dolls but they tend to have freakishly thin arms and upper bodies. I can see that it's part of their overall aesthetic but it often makes the dolls look disproportionate.

    19. I guess my "thing" is not as weird as most of these seem to other people, but as a collector of 1:6 action figures, it was pretty weird and left kind of a odd nagging feeling in the back of my mind. I was browsing TaoBao, and found a gorgeous looking doll, that I thought was very familiar looking, like Japanese-video-game-esque-head on a silicone body. The photos had her in different poses holding a sword of some sort, wearing jean shorts a denim jacket, and what I believe was a crop top but nothing out of the ordinary for 1:6 female figures. I thought maybe it was a new female by Ringtoys (Ringdoll), because the face looked very Asian (video) computer game, but the body was obviously silicone. Her face was too perfect-game-looking, to be Phicen/TBLeauge. I was trying to find a brand on the photos, but it was mostly Chinese characters, then I thought maybe it is a new Phycen/TBLeauge doll, since Ringtoys always has their puppet logo on their figure promos... Then I read the tittle of the listing, for the first time in the twenty plus minutes I spent trying to figure out what brand 1:6 action figure she was.

She was a 1:1-scale sex doll! Lol! I was super confused and kind of surprised at how non-creepy she looked for one of those. The last time I stumbled across one of those when searching for possible 1:6 silicone bodies, they looked super weird and not very life-like. I was strangely weirded out that the doll was so much like an actual action figure, in aesthetics and maybe even proportions. I guess I experienced uncanny valley for the first time in my life, as a forty-year-old -fart. I can't say the trauma has left my mind yet, but I am probably more disappointed that she isn't a 1:6 action figure. DX

    20. BJD willie wongs are sure strange indeed, and here I thought the human one's were crazy, that elephant one got me good! Never seen that before but I have a idea where it goes.......thanks for the laugh!

    21. LMAO omg I didn’t know that this existed! Any talented people making pants for this guy?

    22. "Oh creepy pregnant doll? Can't be the one I'm thinking of- ah". Angel of dreams doll tend to look slightly cursed to me anyway, but god that took the cake. I found owner pictures of them too and the babys head is attached via magnet, which in it of itself is really unsettling.

    23. Gotta say, jointed dongs are hilarious to me. I find DC's "project dolls" to be very pretty, just not my thing. Honestly I find it weirded that they keep having multiple joints in the wrists, ankles, and NECKS. The double neck thing weirds me the heck out.
Gladys 68cm Girl, Doll Chateau - BJD, BJD Doll, Ball Jointed Dolls - Alice's Collections

The other things I found weird... Angel Philia's uh... "specialized" bust parts. Very clearly only for specific photoshoots. I want to see someone try to take shots of them in regular clothes because JEEZ
spoilered. This one in particular is my "favorite" but in general most of their option busts are bizarre.

And finally... the option part I am NOT going to go looking for.

      -deleted-

I have decided that we just don’t need to talk about that option part and it isn’t made by any doll company so let’s just - let’s not.

    25. Haha! I had the exact same thought! I can maybe understand the symbolism of snakes but the symbolism of tentacle + flower+ robin face is a bit beyond me  Actually whats amusing me the most is the horned snake peen, it has the exact expression that my pets snakes have when they're waiting for the next thought to turn up so it's so funny seeing it there on the doll doing the snek 'derp no thoughts' face :XD:

    27. The bird in Chinese is slang word for penis . So it is understandable.

I do not understand why all jj parts are so small. DFA was more generous with their snake part.

Weird thing I seen a company do, for me would be the infamous anti child abuse pictures and doll Doll chateau did.

While where was no problem with the doll or its fullset. I was extremely appalled by some photos, where the doll was put in sugestive poses. After the anger of the community, Doll Chateau changed the photos, making it candy theamed... and the doll was put in the same suggestive positions in the photos. They have understood nothing.

      • x 2
    28. Ah! Thanks for the explanation of the word play, at least I get part of the joke now. It seems that birds are also used to indicate a man's romantic interest so I guess it's funny on an erection as direct imagery? Any ideas about the flower or tentacle? I am genuinely curious about the symbolism/joke :XD: (hope that's not getting too rude for this board ;))

      • x 1
    29. My guess on the tentacle aspect in this specifically? It might tie into the constant use of tentacles in anime porn (or hentai) when representing those male parts. I can't be certain if that's the exact reason for it, but that's my guess.:kitty2

Also, on the subject of those Ringdoll male bits—I got a good hearty laugh upon seeing those. They're definitely being creative with those in particular:lol:

    30. That one time when Mattel accidentally made Ken gay. Earing magic Ken.

Not weird, but definitely hilarious. Apparently they wanted to make Ken cooler for younger kids. Turns out, Earing magic Ken was the top selling Ken doll of all time, and all for the wrong audience.

I won't spoil the rest for you guys that want to do more research.

    33. Wow... that was scary. I regret looking up that ringdol amy doll. I can see some people wanting a gruesome zombie doll like that, but it's too scary for me. It's not a bad doll, but very scary and a little too unique for me to ever want it. Actually, that would be a good doll to carry around for halloween.

That pregnant lady doll with the extreme expression is a little unsettling for some reason. She looks off her expression, but I'm not sure what her face expression means. It just looks off.

    34. I was straight away thinking of those RingDoll peens, so funny :XD: About pregnant dolls, I was reminded by RingDoll Eva, Frankenstein's bride. She has a little door on her stomach and a tiny red fetus inside... yaay. RingDoll do have a bunch of "dark side" horror versions of dolls and sometimes they even have "nice" little stories to go with them.

    36. A full head of hair on a baby doll. I see this all the time on porcelain collector dolls. It looks so unnatural, like the baby is being eaten alive by the wig.
Have those people ever seen an actual baby?
I understand wanting a doll with a full bouffant head of hair, or swaths of cascading ringlets, but it takes a while to grow that much hair. A baby hasn't been alive long enough

I hope I didn't offend anyone with my rant

    37. Those look painful. If a human guy is permanently erect like that, he needs medical attention ASAP.
On the other hand, some of the teeny weenies on many bjds look weird too. A guy can't win either way.

I also agree about the pregnant bjds
Reminds me of when Mattel attempted a pregnant Barbie. FAIL!

    39. I assume these weird and funny things that seem so random are just fetish stuff and I'm not a fan of companies who cater to that.

Personally I love the dark/horror things when they're not made for shock value which is a bit of a blurry line. I wouldn't own one, though, because they always look like display items and I think the novelty would wear off fast.
I love the new robot ballerina by DZ but the sheer amount of gimmicks and moving parts makes me think she wouldn't be a lot of fun to handle barring genius engineering.
That one is taken straight out of Hellraiser lol

    40. I still don't understand the total commitment to realism Dikadoll decided on when giving their Senior girls a bum hole.
