I'm sure we've all seen some dolls that just made us go, "...eh?" Some kind of off-the-wall styling or a concept from waaaaay out of left field. Sometimes they're awesome, other times they're not. Regardless, they stick out and leave a strong impression. But I don't want to talk about individual dolls right now! I want to talk about weird decisions and styling done by the doll companies themselves. The kinds of things that make you go, "Hold up, an actual company actually Made That?? Like, FOR REAL???" (Artist dolls count too!) I'll start with what inspired this topic: This pregnant doll, complete with tiny, insertable-and-removable baby. I can't decide what's weirdest about her. The absurd tininess of her baby, the removal back panel allowing one to store said baby within her torso, the almost manic joy on her face...She's a real gem. I admire whoever came up with the idea, let alone went through with it.
Gosh, I forgot about that doll! I'm not somebody who finds dolls creepy in the slightest, no matter what design they are or era they're from or anything like that. But I find her expression extremely unsettling, and I can't say I've really ever felt that with any doll I can think of. I feel like "manic" might be the right word haha. There's something about it that sets of an instinctive response in me that makes me think I'm looking at somebody who is actually NOT happy and is in danger and bad things are happening. Probably also the absurdly tiny baby actually makes it even worse too! I don't know anything about babies tbh, but that looks like... it is too small to be the size a baby should be when birthed. Maybe I'm wrong. But it looks more embryonic to me, and combined with that expression; yikes. I don't hate it or anything, but it's definitely unsettling to me!
I would perhaps even have a pregnant doll, but to me that particular one just looks odd, as she hasn't got anything like the stomach of a woman about to give birth, unless her anatomy is really exceptional. I've looked more bloated after an all you can eat buffet. On the other hand the baby too looks like it was born way ahead of its time. Concerning the pregnant topic, there is always Ringdoll Amy, who has a baby face in her stomach and the stomach has all kinds of guts coming out around the little face. I am not sure if she is supposed to be a pregnant woman who was turned to zombie and now the baby is a zombie too, or did she just stumble and fall on a baby doll head and it got stuck in her tummy or what? she also seems to have some kind of a flesh brooch on her neck. I don't personally find her creepy, but I just think she leaves a lot of questions unanswered. What were the designers going for?
Doll Family did make that SD male body with the multiple genitalia attachments, two of which were snakes. That was pretty out there but also hilarious.
I'm not particularly phased by much. I quite enjoy a lot of the more gory dolls, especially the Siamese torso display with the exposed heart. Honestly, that pregnant doll is one of the strangest I've seen. I wouldn't have given it a second thought if not for that expression, though. @Cap'n What's up with the DF:H's genetialia that has multiple bits on it?
Glad I'm not the only one unsettled by the expression! I've seen loads of gory dolls, dolls with faces melting off, organs exposed, you name it. Don't mind. And yeah, a doll being "pregnant" alone? No problem. But the pregnant doll's expression specifically just makes me uncomfortable!
The detachable/changeable magnetic boy bits have always amused the heck out of me - like in what situation are we going to need that many different variations of..."excited-ness"? (still kinda want one though) Speaking of weird boy parts, some of the Granado minis have a magnetic hand part that goes down there. Other stuff I find weird: dolls with interchangeable mouth parts, those old Doll Chateau centaurs that had human feet instead of hooves, the Dream Valley dolls that have the one creepy arm coming out of their back (mostly the fact that it's a basic option)...
I love weird stuff, but the styling and name on Doll Chateau Cephalopod does have me scratching my head. The outfit (?? Is it an outfit??) is made of what appears to be tape, gel filters, and bits of window screens. And the name would suggest an octopus or squid type creature, but it's a scorpion guy. I think the doll is really cool, but I'm just wondering how they are doing this full set or if the full set is somewhat different from the pictures? I also seem to recall a pregnant doll with a clear belly, did I dream it?
So there's the non-pregnant version of the Hui Xiang doll, and the smile looks more genuine due to the wrinkles, so it's really baffling to me when they did fine before. This one doesn't have the repressed smile asking for help Otherwise, I can't think of anything else because the cool/creepy/weird ones I know of are all typical of their respective companies.
the manic grin, the premature baby... she looks like she wants to EAT it. I really hate toothy grins on dolls in any event, they ALWAYS creep me out because they feel manic and sinister. But yeah, can confirm, newborn babies aren't that small. They're more like the size of a large watermelon. there's no way you can hold a newborn in the palms of both hands unless it's seriously prem. I'd say that baby is maybe half the size it should be? Those snake bits are hilarious to me. Along with DC's posable strung er... genitals ahahaha. WHY? The siamese twin dolls Doll Chateau did are pretty wierd, mostly because of HOW they're attached and that they're called "lovers" er... incest? wiiiiierd. Though I think the wierdest and most unsettling thing was DC's original promo photo shoot for their little doll with that wierd vinyl looking punching bag outfit where they posed her in a dungeon-like setting and a "don't abuse kids" message. What... the.. hell?!? *shudder*
I've never seen this before and. I died. Oh my god, I died laughing. The snakes just killed me. That's awesome. Doubly weird that there's a normal-looking smile on her non-pregnant version. What happened, I wonder?
I think the 'Lovers' name came from Tarot cards... Though, yeah, it is still pretty odd doll. (I personally like it tho, lmao) And yeah, Miriam from DC... There was lot of discussion about her when she was released, I personally found the promo odd and kind of creepy as well :/ As for me, lot of time I like gore-y and 'creepy' dolls, (even tho all of the dolls I actually own are pretty 'normal') but I think first doll I was actually honestly unsettled and pretty much disgusted by was that penis doll that people posted a lot about on IG... I don't remember the name tho, and I'm also unsure if it's on-topic?
That's Pisyun (yep) by Mezendoll, and no it won't be on-topic on DOA. I can't say I'm a fan of it either. I don't find it unsettling, but I also just don't understand the point, and also have no patience for it because nobody is going to make a vulva doll (though I wouldn't see the point of that either), but of course they will make a penis doll. It reminds me of some kind of BJD equivalent of rude genital graffiti on subway walls. Like okay, thanks for contributing nothing. But... that's just a harsh personal opinion. I'll still agree that plenty of work has clearly gone into it, and if that's what they want to spend their time doing then that's okay! And it seems to be really popular honestly, there are plenty of people jumping on the preorder!
Ugh, that penis thing rendered my Instagram feed impossible to look at for a couple of days....kind of silently judging how many people wanted something like that lmao. TTvTT I always assumed Pregnant Huixiang's baby was meant to be a fetus, hence why it's so small, but that makes it even more disturbing that you can just remove it and put it back in at will. I was always creeped out by fetuses though.
One of my favorite companies Miracle Doll came out with a doll recently whose fullset comes with (if the company taobao is to be believed).... real bones.... I was so excited about the headsculpt that I barely noticed at first but yeah......... hold the bones, please.........
That's unnecessary. Didn't Dollzone or Doll Chateau advertise a doll at one point by draping actual entrails over it? That was really uncomfortable too.
Oh no. That little boy looks sinister af. Like if that kid came to take me at the end of my life I would run.
I think the weirdest thing I saw about a doll is that one with the interchangeable penises. It popped randomly in my IG and I couldn't believe it. I think the pregnant doll is far scarier than the anaconda-penis
I knew someone would cover jointed manhood. The genitalia in general have always felt odd to me; making the male one posable or with different positions just feels unnecessary. As does Pisyun. Someone I follow bought one to make a mushroom character. I wish more power to them. Very curious to see how the cap turns out. Long, long ago, Noble Dolls' early version of their SD male body came with rubber nipples. Yes. Why? I have no idea. Squishy nipples sounded like a good idea to somebody. There are so many weird and wonderful dolls out there. Insect and arachnoid anthros fall under this catagory. But I think of Musen's Dual and the two-faced Doll Leaves girl in particular when it comes to odd. Not exactly a sculpting choice, but a choice by the company. Granado's April Fools Day posts. There's zero need for it from professional standpoints, but I love that they take time and effort to be goofy with us. They even dedicate an announcement thread to it here on DoA.
I came from the Chinese doll community and I always thought swappable male bits are pretty common… everyone knows certain companies have them as their main selling point coughlongsoulcough We also have make up commissions for those bits. Some artists claims they use their boyfriend's as reference, and while some people find it disturbing others are all appreciative. I've also seen a painted anaconda, boy that was gorgeous and literal piece of art - I'll try searching for it later …(can't imagine why they'd want it attached to a doll but still) Adding on to the list of weird things doll company do. Do you guys know that there's this trans doll released by Thelesthsiadoll? With both male and female parts… they are darn pretty though, not sure if am allowed to share pictures here, I'll check with the owner.
Probably the Dollzone "Star and Moon" dolls for me. I just could not get into them, they really creeped me out actually. Their faces were beautiful but the fact they were heads on spinal chords just squicked me out too badly.
Not to be too pedantic, but is the doll actually trans? Or do you mean it just comes with option parts? The two things would be very different. I feel it is a little bit uncomfortable to be calling trans weird here, but I’ll assume you mean it is unusual rather than negative-weird. If a maker makes an actually trans doll, I would be very interested in seeing it, as well as any intersex doll. There are a few dolls with ambiguity, but I think the only doll I have ever seen be more explicit about it was the one Xdissipation was working on years ago. Even then, that one was more about ambiguous androgyny than anything else (very cool all the same!).
AHHHH am sorry! I think a better way to put it would be unusual or unique, yes. Especially for a Chinese based company when the mainstream society is usually so repressed. The sculpt's Chinese name is Tao Chen and yes, it's an actual trans doll built on a normal 1/3 male frame complete with telesthesia doll's (in?)famous detachable boy bits and a pretty chest. I got permission to share - Imgur It's beautiful…
That’s good to hear! I am guessing it was limited or long since discontinued? It isn’t a name I have heard crop up in any of my time in the hobby, and I have friends who would especially find dolls like that of interest.
I did a quick search myself and nope it's still available! the nude body is, but the full set and the head is limited I think. For the body, see if you can open the link below: TD-BJD/SD人偶娃娃男素体68CM大叔娃身体3分人妖叔单体(不含头)-淘宝网 The first few photos up there looks like a regular male body, but swipe and you'll the the curves~ ahaha If your friend's interested do try getting in touch with the sales rep! Pretty sure the one who sells longsoul dolls should know since TD is a line under longsoul… I think
This is really cool! Not something I'm likely to own myself, but I'd love to see what other people do with the doll!
Ah, that's so cool! I would really love to have a proper trans/intersex doll (I'm surprised more indie dollmakers haven't jumped on that yet.) Silly question but is there like...a list of male bodies with swappable bits? For reasons? I know Loongsoul has some, Granado Lucifer, Shoushou Doll's sd male body, Doll Family I thiiiink? It seems like it's mostly 65+ doll bodies. And for weirdness, I would like to add Doll Chateau and Dream Valley's choice of outfits for some of their fullsets/promo pics. Does anyone actually want their doll to come wearing a weird round cloak with a pointy hat, or a giant bow, or a castle on their head?
Sorry for late reply! Was busy with work this whole week;; No it's not a silly question at all! As for those with boy bits... I don't think there is a list per se but I think a lot of Chinese companies are offering the option to have detachable and swappable bits to their new bodies! Do get in touch with an agent like Alice's Closet and they should be wayyyy more knowledgeable on this. ALSO I found this beauty!!! It's a custom by an artist? Not really sure who so if anyone can help me identify that would be great! Imgur so... pretty....
Dream Valley Peanut is so weird—a tiny cyclops cat with weird feet. It’s so creepy and cute and I want one. Lol
Musen was a wild one. Reminds me of these dolls that had a Janus-style duel head but it's an animal/human combo and also can't use a wig. I believe they are ABS and off-topic otherwise. On the resin side, Dollzone's done several special sculpts that really require some kind of special stand, eg, the Star and the Moon come to mind who were basically a head, arms, and an uppermost torso with a spine hanging out. I can't imagine how fragile that spine piece is.
Does anyone remember the company that had the male doll with the penis bit that could switch to “erect” if you pressed on the doll’s nipples? I swear I didn’t hallucinate that, it just happened so long ago that I can’t remember the details (other than it made me laugh my butt off, haha!) personally, I think the snake peenie bits are hilarious, I wouldn’t mind having a doll with those because I know I’d laugh every time I saw them. Who needs Prozac when you have optional resin trouser snakes...
ok guys I found the snake thing - open at your own risk Screenshot_20200321_234404_com.taobao.idlefish I think the size comparison is gold
The faces of those Angel Philia dolls, like I get they’re supposed to be making lewd faces but their tongues sticking out freak me out a little.
That'd be the Nobility Doll 70cm Emotional Boy body with the "press rosetta good feel" nipples of doom.
this convo brings back memories...hilarious, hilarious memories. The body was actually Nobility Doll Ryoma’s body which isn’t available anymore. Alright so, as a point of fact it was “press papilla good feel” (a papilla is a clinical-sounding term for “a random little fleshy lump anywhere on the body” and is a fairly hilarious term to choose for a nipple.) The nipple pressing was NOT connected to the dong in any way, although that concept is deliriously funny. I believe the utility of the nipples receding into the body upon slight pressure being applied was simply to keep them from poking out thru clothing, which is actually a very good idea that I wouldn’t have minded seeing other companies use. The infamous good-feel slogan elevated them from innovative to hilarious. The dong, although not linked to the nips, was very funny as well. Rather than simple coming in a detachable up/down variety, as some male bodies already did at the time, it was jointed and could point not only up or down but rotate 360degrees. The imagery of a doll rotating his peen in a circle (eyebrow waggling optional) is priceless. I don’t think that link is to the right body, as it was only 60cm and also featured a neck joint. I fear its sale page is lost to the sands of time. But check out a couple photos here (I think the vinyl part mentioned is just the blog owner’s speculation; the nipples were just resin which retracted on a spring mechanism): "Press papilla good feel."
Oh noooo hahaha someone mentioned at the start of this thread the creepy little arm thing Dream Valley has... yeah I hate that. Kinda sad because the dolls that have the creepy arm are really nice looking and I love the other fantasy bodies I've seen from dream valley (especially their boy dragons, I adore the little claw hands on the ends of the wings, i find them so cool looking)... I'm all for body horror and weird proportions and fantasy shenanigans on dolls but for whatever reason that specific long skinny tiny arm gives me Bad Vibes. Getting back into this hobby after 10 years out if it is such a delight... I get to relive all the amazing hilarious weirdness I'd completely forgotten about like Press Papilla Good Feel... the memories are rushing back and I distinctly remember lowkey wanting to see that body in person just to see what was so good about the feeling. It reminds me of those button clicker fidget toys, LOL
owmygawsh i remember that!! And the penis was strung on elastic.... so at doll meets someone had one and twirled it up and let it go and it spun like a propeller!!! *DYING* ROFL
Sweet Jesus I feel a mighty need for that male body with the snake bits. That's honestly hysterical. The transgender MtF doll however has my genuine interest. The website when translated from Chinese uses some rather unkind/outdated terms but I am quite interested in that sort of body... I've never bought from Taobao but that has me wanting to figure it out.
So, I have the boy with the snakey bits and massive dong selection. Dude. They don't mention it. SOME OF THEM HAVE PIERCING HOLES IN ACTUAL KNOWN SPOTS. I about died laughing. I was expecting the snakes...not that xD
Dollshe Mystic bodies have the man-parts hooked to a tiny elastic with an s-hook. They only come with one peen but because of the elastic you can move it up and down, kinda like the Nobility Doll talked about before. They also come with a cup like sort of cover with an s-hook that you can put on instead of the dick because otherwise the dick would be too big to fit in most pants.
Is this just with the Classic Mystic bodies, or does it include the Fashion sized ones too? Asking for....reasons xD I have a Mystic body coming in soon.
I don't have a Fashion sized Dollshe unfortunately, only a Classic one but from what I can tell from the pictures on the site the Fashion ones have the same mechanism yeah
I absolutely forgot about those nipples and now I'm crying laughing. As for 'weird thing' that I have that ties into the detachable penis situation, Spiritdoll also has those and comes with several. I have a friend living with me kinda temporarily, but longer term for work and covid related reasons that saw me looking at Granados a few days ago. Her reaction was like, "Wait, they have actual penises?" Then of course I had to pull out my bag o' penises to show her. Then undo the doll's pants to show her the current one and how they attached. It was a good laugh.
I wouldn't say it is the weirdest BJD I have seen, though Doll Chateau Elizabeth, http://www.doll-chateau.com, was pretty weird for me. I was lucky enough to see her in person, in the old yellow skin that was discontinued. She was blank and she was fabulous .
This thread is awesome . Let's see, I don't squick out easily, I love the creatively macabre concepts of Dream Valley, Doll Chateau and D-Lace (speaking of memorable unique dolls... ) but I have found some other dolls that disturb/unsettle me in a different way. First off, anyone remember the Roro line from HZbjd from around 2011 or so? Tiny chibi versions of their SD dolls that would be super cute... if they didn't look so much like quadruple amputees with disproportionately large genitals >.< Doll: Roro Company: HZ BJD | Bjd dolls, Dolls, Bjd Also HZ seemed to make a point of showing off those genitals in the promo pictures, in clothed shots they're almost always bare below the waist. Icing on the cake: that one promo pic I vividly remember that I sadly can't find right now in which a few naked Roros of several head sculpts were posed together in a way that can only be described as humping eachother's backs^^;; Another one I came across yesterday actually Fairy Castle Bobo: BJD Bobo 27cm Boy Ball-jointed doll_Fairy Castle_DOLL_Ball Jointed Dolls (BJD) company-Legenddoll He's not grotesque or weirdly proportioned or anything by any means, in fact I think he's downright adorable, but seeing his fullset photos was really unsettling somehow, maybe I'm just being sensitive, I dunno. I get there's probably a lot of people who have homeless/vagabond characters or dolls that are otherwise scruffy and injured, but to choose that as his full set with this amount of realism (those injured/frostbitten(?) little hands and feet, oh god. I'm glad they didn't give him an emaciated little body to go with the rest of the look...), for a TINY that looks like he's 5 or 6 that you can "save" by shelling out a lot of money to buy the doll, it feels a bit... tasteless? Like they're romanticising abandoned, abused homeless little kids a little by presenting this doll like a poor little stray kitten (dunno why else he's wearing those ears, but then again I don't know if the company has an actual backstory to this one) you can just pick up off the street and adopt? Dolls are usually beautiful (if sometimes beautiful in their grotesque- or weirdness) little creations as far removed from grim ugly reality as you can get (which is why we buy them, right?) and even the more gritty, gory fullsets usually have an obvious "fantasy" feel to them, this one for me crossed something of a line into uncomfortable reality^^;;. And still it somehow worked, I'm actually tempted to get a Bobo (not the fullset though) >.<.
I'm very picky about bjds, it's not hard for some to scare me, but I can safely say that after reading this thread, I am now deeply disturbed. Amputee chibis and anaconda genitals and dolls cut off at the spine and that's enough Internet for me today.
I have a Universe Doll body that has sculpted pubic hair. Found that out once it arrived. Also the nipples are like super detailed.
I mean, if it helps, I always chose to see the Roros as little starfish with people heads instead of quadruple amputees? Starfish merpeople? Starmaids? Seeing them again is a blast from the past. I guess at the end of the day, it's like all art - what's deeply disturbing for some people is a really cool, creative, thought-provoking concept for others.
I used to own one of the Roro's and I couldn't for the life of me take it seriously. I even had it's character as one that couldn't be taken seriously (was once a powerful demon but was trapped in that nubby body yet still retained his deep voice).
I'm afraid the idea of starfish people scare me just as much. Just to add, I have no issue or fear of amputees, but the whole chibi thing mixed in just does me in.
Oh DEFINITELY Doll family’s snake peen!! Not that i dont like it and find it hilarious, but its def very weird lol
