Volks Super Dollfie - SD, SD13, SD16, SD17, SDGr, SDGou & FCS - XXXII

Jan 8, 2022

    1. @Quinn.nnp
I purchased an SD16 last year. VolksUSA seems to offer SD16 about once a year towards October. Last year they offered them twice in August and October. They don’t charge a different price between the skin tones as far as I remember. The SD16 usually has the option of two types of tan: sunlight and a darker amber tone.

A basic model with the flat feet last year was $726. Faceup and eyes $110. Extra hands $59. Heel legs $88. There’s also extra services like seam line removal and stuff but I didn’t get it. After shipping and stuff it came to $1,024.85 for me.

    2. @DemonMiko thank you for your info. So they always have the tan skin options? I prefer the pure skin tan than amber so if pure skin tan is always in the list that would be great. And if you order only heel legs there’s still extra charge of $88?

I want to know the coating service too if sb went for it and the resin feels and looks better than without the coating

The person who sells Pearl sent me her order and there’s no makeup or extra services or extra hands. I’d like to get her now but I’m debating between square and round shoulders I want to see others’ opinion before making a decision.

    3. The sunlight and amber tans have both been traditionally offered with SD16 only. The heel legs were an extra set of legs I added to my order. The base price comes with one set of legs and you can choose which one you want. The flat feet are just more expensive if you choose it as the add-on set.

I’m not sure what the sanding and coating services cost though. I didn’t want them so I never added it on.

Ningyo Bingo has a nice comparison of the two types of SD16 shoulders. I personally prefer the look of the rounded shoulders for my girls but I think it really depends on your dolls.

    4. Anyone displaying their Max or Reg in their uniforms? I won Max and I have him in his full school uniform for now. I also got the starry nights utility belt. Very cute. If I had a Reg, he would skirt the rules on the school uniform code. I thought that the ability to remove the cape from the vest was a nice touch. I bought the tuxedo with the tails last year or two years ago. I think Max would look great in the tux as he escorts his love Garnet dressed in Lady Oscar's white gown to the school ball.

I've gotten both square and rounded shoulders and to be honest, there is not a whole lot of difference that I could see. But my girls are in gowns so their shoulders don't show anyway.

    5. @Kbarberdav Do the arms look awkward in posing with square shoulders (in naked body)? I tried to look for both shoulders but look like most people get round shoulders.

And I’m curious if anyone got the coating service and it worths the money

    6. I get the sanding and coating service.

    7. @Quinn.nnp I think the square shoulders look a little odd when they are bare. I have one of each and I think I prefer the rounded. But I can see how the square shoulders provide a touch stronger silhouette. If you do go for the Tan or Amber skin I would 100% recommend the seam removal and coating services, especially for the hands. I got it for my Tan Pearl and F-57 years ago and it smooths and mattes them out so lovely. My Regulus who arrived last week looks sort of plasticy compared to them. I'll need to coat his body.

Here's a pic of my Regulus, SD-57 in Tan and Lorina in Normal. Not the best comparison with the high contrast of the white and black but gives you an idea.

    8. @Psycho Sukafu thanks so much for the information. I think I’ll wait till next fcs to get the coating service then. I do like the tan colour in photos.

I remember they said the coating service has to go with seam removal. So when I choose coating, do I have to choose seam removal as well? Or the price of coating service already includes seam removal?

and I can order through fcs sd16 USA right?

    9. @Quinn.nnp As long as Volks USA offers them at some point and you are in US, Canada or Mexico yes. And you are correct, seam removal needs to be ordered along with the body coating with each priced seperately. Though I did just find an interesting project thread for modifying/sanding an F-31 in tan by going into very high grits.

It's an interesting idea that I might test on my Bronze Soom dolls before tackling my Regulus' hands. But it does take me hours to sand an entire doll so not looking forward to that.:sigh

    11. I think I've never showed this boy here!! This year I managed to get SD F-26 and even if he was on my wishlist, I never seriously attempted to buy him - this one was really good deal from very generous owner! Now I'm obsessed, taking 231455225 pictures of him, he's on his way to beat my favourite ahaha : DD

    12. Congrats I think she was one of the best ! How do I get to the area where I see my previous lottery entries ? pretty sure I didn't win but want to look. When I go to the Volks international site I just see nothing in my cart instead of the area that stores in info on previous lotteries. Urgh... always find this hard to find.

    13. TreeLore,
I had some difficulty in finding that also.
this is what I finally found.
go to Login, then to my page,
      past purchase history
under that is Enter Lottery to purchase information
      and finally,
under this will be the link for Enter Lottery Application history/

Then I see no my page and just have to click login again and around and around :aeyepop: messaged you ;) I'm pretty sure this has happened to me before! and no idea how I got to my page eventually.

    15. They made an announcement about this. Try clearing your cookies and/or cache. If that doesn't work, an alternate browser or incognito/private window seems to do the trick.

    16. Paid off my Hermione! According to the proxy, she should be here in April of next year. It's the longest I've ever waited for a doll but she'll be worth it. :XD:

    17. I got Ron with the other proxy. Thanks, everyone who's mentioned what proxy they've used! It was very helpful for me!

    18. Oh, so they got enough orders to go ahead with production? Not an HP fan, but I look forward to seeing repaints of these two.

    19. @St. James I don't know if they've said yet, but given how popular the franchise is, I'd be surprised if they didn't.

    20. Wait, where are these HP dolls? I can't afford them so I'm not even gonna try, but I'm just curious to see them.

    24. I finally had some time off today, and besides being lazy I thought it would be nice to take a couple of dolls out for pics.

So here's my F-17 Zidane! Please excuse his bed hair, he's been sleeping for far too long in his box.
Yeah, that's my excuse for not dressing and doing his hair properly.

    25. He’s gorgeous @himitsu !! F-17 is one of my favourite sculpts, and yours is stunning. I’d say his messy hair adds to his handsomeness. :whee: I’d love to see more photos of Zidane once he’s been freed from his box!

I’ll add my F-17, though his ears have been modded. I can’t get enough of this boy.

Thanks! I'll try to work more on my dolls from now on, lol. I promise he'll lookmore Zidaneish sometime in the future!

    27. I finally decided to fix the proportional stuff that was bothering me about my Ryoma. I love-love-love his face sculpt and the way that his expression changes from angle to angle, but the juxtaposition of manly face and baby oversized cranium were starting to jar me. Also, I couldn't find a happy medium for the body. SD17 body was too muscular for me aesthetically and too heavy for me practically, so it got sold; the more manageable SDGr body was Okay with layers and layers of kimono piled on, but the arms were still too short and the neck gap was bothersome. I didn't want to get him a non-Volks body because I want to take him to Tenshi no Sato someday.
So! I decided to take some height off his head to get the eyes to halfway up his face rather than 1/3-ish, and do some mods to the SDGr arms and chest parts. I spliced about 15mm of length into the upper arms to bring his elbows down to navel level, and then bulked up the arm muscles and neck with more epoxy clay. I also took advantage of the way the SD17-sized neckhole sits on the SDGr neck and made the stringing hole in the neck more elliptical so he can tilt his head a couple more degrees.
The white is Mr. Surfacer and I'll be airbrushing the additions to match, then blushing everything when I do his faceup.

      • x 11
    28. Those are some pretty cool modifications!! do you have some photos of how far he can move his head more? :XD:

does Tenshi-no-Sato also accept modded Volks dolls? I'm pretty new to Volks dolls, so I'm not familiar yet with what their rules are ^^"

    29. I've ordered Hermione thru a proxy that was recommended here on DOA. Wish I could get Ron as well, but cannot afford both by end of August. HP has a special place in my heart. I read the books and watched the films with my daughter as she was growing up.

    31. Hi team! I was wondering, does anyone happen to have or have seen a photo of SD17 Andre blank? Thank you in advance!

Also for the dolly tax, my Alice, Amandine:

    32. @snowgray I am forever obsessed with Amandine!! The color scheme is just so pleasing.

I wish everyone luck for the upcoming Dolpa dolls! Fortunately I am safe, for the first time this year :XD:

Doll tax, my one-off Kaelin I was able to buy second-hand. I love this sly fox! He has option magnets in his head, which is really neat, IMO!

    33. @snowgray I saw a blank sculpt of Andre 2 years ago on an IG. The owner or artist then repainted him. He’s gorgeous in different way :XD:

    35. @snowgray, thanks for finding a blank pic of Andre! At least that repaint looks happy, but... I'd like to see a "strong" happy expression instead of a weak one. That's just me, lol.

I was just looking at the newest Pinkhouse girls' pics on IG. Pretty girls, and I can see Volks made them more generally appealing than Angela and Sophie, with sweeter and more girlish sculpts, and high heel feet. Their demand will leave Angela and Sophie in the dust, I bet.

    36. Coincidentally these use the new frame too.. but no way was Volks just using up the last stock of the old frame…

      • x 5
    37. Maybe too many complained about the way the different coloured joints harm the overall look of the dolls, so they caved in? I'm surprised they would relent at all

    38. Short unboxing video of Elsa, I put Cinderella in the background to welcome her new friend :XD:

    39. When Anthy arrived with matched joints, I suspected this was coming. Still cherishing my first-run Icon, but I may need another one now.

      • x 6
    40. Oh man, the icons are so cool. I was super put off by the mismatched joints when they first came out. It looked like an unprofessional and lazy decision. Now if they made elf ears an option, my wallet would be deceased! I hope they expand this line now that they're making the dolls properly.

      • x 4
    41. I have Clover and Lilac from the last two summer lotteries. While I am fine with the joints, I am liking the new face sculpts provided! Wonder if they might switch up their skin colors later? Like maybe Nikki in Twany?

      • x 1
    42. Oh no! Are the new sculpts only in the colors shown in the pictures? I want all color options for all the heads. I really like this line because it's such a nice balance between anime and realistic styles.

      • x 4
    43. Probably because they got so many complaints. On one hand they look nice and it's good to see large companies making wanted changes, on the other hand I hate to see artists censure themselves due to negativity.

      • x 3
    44. What gets me is that they refuse to sell the matching frames to people who got the first Icons. Honestly I'm shocked. After pretending the mismatched joints were a purposeful decision, matching them now is basically admitting that they simply couldn't be bothered to do it before. And then won't allow existing customers to update their dolls?? Not cool imo :eusa_naug

      • x 10
    45. Well the f3 frame and many parts of the DDIII body are not compatible. Besides, I have never known Volks to offer options after a "correction" or update.

      • x 5
    46. I’m a bit confused at the idea that this is proof that Volks ‘always could have done this’? It’s never really been a secret that Icon’s initial purpose was something fun and experimental to use up the old DDIII frames. Otherwise, what purpose would there even have been to have them on discontinued bodies…? It doesn’t make sense, nor is it cost effective in the slightest, to develop *new* DDIII frames in new colours when DDIII aren’t being developed for any other reason.
But now that Icon has proven its own popularity (and probably ran out of frames), it’s well worth the investment to move to f3 - the current gen DD body, meaning it makes sense and is expected to make coloured frames, since those are the frames currently in production -now-.

Unfortunately f3 and DDIII are different bodies with different comptabilities, that’s all there is to it. It’s not that ‘Volks always could have done it’, because then they would have done it to begin with. Besides, people bought the old ones knowing the frames didn’t match so I don’t know why they’d be mad they do now, especially considering the entire body is different, given that it’s now d3.

      • x 15
    47. I am definately not mad with my Icons. I adore them and prefer my "old" Lilac's faceup to the newer versions (speaking for myself).

      • x 1
    48. I could have sworn that after updating the SD17 body's knees, they allowed owners to buy the knee parts for their old SD17s.

      • x 3
    49. If that was always their purpose to be experimental, then I understand Volks too I think. Actually it's cool that they re-used parts that perhaps would have otherwise been thrown away. It's something I hope a lot more doll artists would do with their discarded resin pieces, like test-casts or miscasts etc. Make something out of it, not throw so much away.

      • x 4
    50. They did allow you to purchase new legs, but the difference would be that they felt the original legs were flawed and needed replacing. It wasn't over an aesthetic choice but an engineering problem. I think you had to send back the old legs and pay about $117 for the replacements. I kept the original legs on my first SD17 guy and worked in a knee problem storyline to explain his odd knock-knee stance. I really would not have wanted it for all my SD17s.

I would point out, that just because they are not immediately selling new frames for the previous Icons doesn't mean they never will. I've seen them say no to making or releasing things before only to see them sell that thing two years later. A "no" from them is not a "never".

I can't say I care for the new faces. It's cute to see the Disney-fication of the resin dolls but seeing that style on vinyl - they start to look very play-line to me. Not that I'm their target audience for these, but I like the previous heads better. If anyone hasn't seen these vinyls in person, the colors are really gorgeous - I'm a huge fan of the pearlescence. Photos really don't do them justice.

      • x 5
    51. Nice to hear some positivity surrounding the Dollfie Icon here. It seems to be teeming with negativity most of the time, but I understand most people are just venting frustration.

      • x 7
    52. I think it's exciting to see that ICON is getting another release! ♥ Old frames or new frames, I think they're a fun and different doll to see in the overall Volks offering.

      • x 3
    53. I have to second this. I was a little 'meh' on the concept at first, but then (if I'm remembering correctly) Volks showed the Icons at SDCC. Seeing them in person was an entirely different experience, and when we went to LA Dolpa my spouse was absolutely captivated by their look and color, he insisted we needed to enter for one and after some frantic rock-paper-scissors we walked away with a Clover. It's so hard for a camera to capture the way their skin looks in person, the shifts in color and light on it. Using the more SD-style makeup in such a glam style really set them apart both from DD and from the mainline SD. While there haven't been a lot, quantity-wise, that have been released, I really feel VolksUSA has tried to follow up and make add-ons available (the additional outfit pieces, hands in all of the Icon-only colors).

      • x 7
    54. If memory serves correctly, I think the SD17 trade in was also a campaign? Or maybe I'm just getting this confused for North America? Tenshi no Sato may offer the trade in currently but otherwise, it was offered on a campaign basis. Hard to keep track. *_*

Yeah, I remember Volks marketing the Dollfie Icon with the different colour joints as an intention vs we can't do it. A future trade in service is plausible. With Volks, anything is possible. What they couldn't or wouldn't do today, doesn't mean that will be the case tomorrow.

      • x 1
    55. Hearing this makes me really curious about them and pushes me more in the direction of wanting to buy one too XD I'll have to hold back though, already have too many doll plans...
