Volks Super Dollfie - SD, SD13, SD16, SD17, SDGr, SDGou & FCS - XXIX

Aug 28, 2020

    1. I see! MIne probably will be picked up after New Year then...

In the situation you mentioned, are packages still moving with USPS just without scanning? Or are they just sitting in the postal office?

    2. @Littlebirdzoom I've had a few VS dolls over the years have some sharp seam lines. My SD16 Yukinojo body and hands had a couple that could cut you. I had to sand them down. I suppose that's why they specifically offer seam removal on their FCS dolls.

All it means is that the SD Williams mold they are using is getting nearer to the end of it's life. They aren't going to remake a mold early, they're going to use it until they have to make a new one. Dolls made later in production are more likely to have noticeable seams. Not sure about any thin resin on my VS dolls, I've certainly had arms with really narrow channels I've had to drill out a bit.

    3. I once bought a pair of SD13 boy tabi feet brand new from the Akihabara Volks shop. They felt more “plastic” and had worse seams than other volks resin items I’ve dealt with and I would’ve sworn they weren’t legitimate if I hadn’t bought them in person myself.

Be careful about making recast accusations, particularly when the item history is well known.

    4. I'd imagine the more "plastic" feeling also has to do with what idrisfynn brought up. The older a silicon mold gets and the more the mold is used the more details it starts to lose. That would include any "tooth" the mold would have had from the master, as the inside of the mold starts to smooth out.

    5. It is not a weird question at all. I do not see the same degree of detailed design in the newly designed SD10 body (renewal information). It seems to be a slight update of the previous SD10B body and that may not satisfy those who prefer the SD17 or SDGr bodies which tend to be more lanky and muscular. But. The SD10B is not supposed to be lanky. It is more cute. I know that is not your concern, but I am mentioning it to help those who may be less familiar with the body options.

I have owned the SD17, SDGr and the SD10B bodies. I tend to prefer single-torso SD10 girl bodies, though. And, you are correct that the weight of the lower mid-section seems to be a bit lighter. I felt that as well even compared to SD10 girls. It did not bother me, but I suppose it could affect how one perceives the balance of the doll in one's hands. It is entirely possible it was designed that way by editing the old SD10B body to have a narrower body side profile than the SD girls (less bum), but I no longer have the SD10B body to compare. Overall, I felt it was not all that much lighter than the SD girl bodies.

As for the seamlines, sometimes it happens, and I feel others have already explained why that is the case. I heard, second-hand and not direct from Volks, that sometimes the staff would remove really bad seamlines a few years back. And, that could be the difference you are perceiving, but again, I cannot really know. I have noticed sharper seamlines in recent years but I enjoy the seamline removal process. So, for me, it is kind of part of the "bonding" to a new doll even if it takes a few years for me to get to it and not a quality control issue.

I would like to echo the above. I feel that the plastic feel people may experience is merely a residual coating of sorts due to the manufacturing process. I find a light sanding with the finest sandpaper Volks has to offer removes it and then it is silky smooth to the touch.

The reality is that as the customer base grows, demand will increase. If we, as collectors, want Volks to release more dolls or larger limitations, we need to accept that there will be cases where perhaps "new" is literally straight out of the factory. That means, it may become better with a bit of maintenance.

    6. Thanks!!!

    7. I spontaneously did a photo shoot today - two in two days, woo hoo! I had been planning a photoshoot like this with these particular dresses and the cushions I had made for quite awhile. It feels good to see the concept materialise the way it has in the photo below. It was a lot of fun creating a kind of abstract "window seat."

Photo Title: Room with a View
Dolls: Anthymia (Volks Mia on SD10G body) & Amoura (Volks Luna, default, with eye change)

    9. @Constance Your Mel is SO CUTE!!! I don't actually think I've seen that sculpt before. I'm pretty new when it comes to Volks (I've yet to own one) but I'm hoping to see more of her here!

    10. Thank you @digitalcore, @JellyParade! I think Mel is such a neat sculpt, and I wish I saw more of her around!

I've since played with the styling of my Mel a little more, and she's so versatile!

Here she is trying on a new dress:

    11. Oh my!!!! She's such a darling gal. She almost reminds me of Sara/Megu/etc. I also ADORE her wig. It reminds me of one of the random inclusion wigs Volks sends with Mel, which is (dare I say) just as cute as the one you have on her.

What kind of style are you aiming for? :XD:<3

    12. @elphsnt I could dreamily stare at your girls all day :D

@Constance she's amazing! Totally loving her outfit!

Also, anyone able to identify the mold of the DP7 one off (!) that popped up on Yahoo? They also have a guy up which I guess is from the same DP but doesn't come with the fancy auction certificate.
Yes I am totally delighted by this, I love the really old Volks way too much  (what else is new lol)

    13. My guess is a white-skin Lady Sylvie, or as her mold was previously referred to, Dolpa 7 Limited Edition Premium head. She came as a pair with the old F28 (separate auction), hence the one certificate. I've seen them together up for auction before, but at a much higher price. Nice to see them again, but a little sad they'll likely be split up.

      • x 4
    14. @nikittin wow that's some history! But truly a shame they might end up being split up

    15. That’s my guess as well.

    16. I'm going to try and bid on the old pair of auction models, so hopefully they stay together in the end! :eusa_pray They are just too cool!

    17. I did see this, I have to say it does feel like a big change after so many years of having that sculpt sitting waiting for many different owners, but I also feel that Volks will continue to make it available in various ways including in online FCS for eventual owners to still be able to get him. What a classic Volks sculpt, I feel they need to work hard to make more classics in the FCS in the future for future Volks fans to rely on the way they have relied on this constant for so many years.

    18. @Ferret-hime I think I read about this a while ago, and as you say...end of an era!

Those of us who love the Lucai sculpts are gutted by this, and I'll just have to accept I'll never get my sunlight skin version unless one comes up on the secondary market...it's never been a case where money met opportunity for me over the years. Still I have 3 here already - 2 NS and 1WS - plus all the various Chris, Lucas, Sasha and Mashas, so I can play the waiting game...

    19. Yes, I remember hearing this from Volks staff members who confirmed it at the Volks LA Dolpa. They also mentioned Show was being discontinued. This was also around the same time Show appeared and was released as a limited DearSD. Is Show an F-15?

@Constance - I love your Mel. With the release of little Cecil, Mel looks like she could be his older sister to me.

    20. Good luck! :clover It would be fabulous if they stayed together in the same loving home.

Here's a photo of the two lovers together in their one-off finery (yes, I saved their old auction photos :sweat):

Oh, my! One of my faves is retiring. S/he is absolutely a Volks classic, akin to SD Nana/Sara in my mind. On the plus side for those that don't mind/welcome "pre-loved," they are plentiful in the secondhand market.

    21. @nikittin holy heck bless you for saving that old auction picture! So precious!! (@I<3MySD you so gotta win those lovers XD)

And seeing a finalized date for the F16 discontinuation feels like the end of an era. He's just such a classic!

      @Alice80 I love your girl! :D

      @Seditionary Show is F15 correct :)

    22. Oh wow, thank you so much for this photo! This is extremely fabulous to see them both together. Now if I lose for some reason, I at least could see them together. Do you keep a lot of old auction photos?

I'm going to try my best! :thumbup I wonder if they are like, Lawrence of Arabia themed?

    23. Hello, I just got my first Volks resin and I'm in love! He's an F-56 Head on an SD13 boy body. I was wondering if anyone happened to know if there are any Volks only Discord servers? I'm in a few for Dollfie Dreams but I've never found any for the resin side.

    25. Discontinuing of F16 is not really news....I remember reading about it here on DOA in maybe in 2019 or 2020? I don't really know how they decide who to retire because why don't they just keep adding new FCS head numbers instead of removing old ones and then replacing them with a new mold? I just don't understand the logic ^^

    26. Perhaps it’s not really news and has already been discussed on forum, but it was the first concrete date I’ve seen for discontinuing the mold. Just thought people might like to know. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    27. Not a whole lot of auction photos, just a select special few. This was the first time I saw a one-off pair and I just found them so sweet. :whee: If you'd like to see more of the lovers, feel free to PM me. (Yes, The Lovers is now their name, lol.)

I'm curious if the other one-offs from that Dolpa were similarly-themed, complete with toy camels. If only there were a master archive of all one-offs from the very beginning; that'd be a dream. :D

    28. Yeah, I remember at LA Dolpa, Volks said that they would discontinue the F-16. I never thought that it would really happen. It seems like such a popular and staple mould but maybe they will release a new version of it and call it another number? Here is hoping that they never discontinue the F-01. :atremblin Somehow I don't think they will as she is the first one that started it all but I guess you never know. It's funny, I came into the hobby being all about boys and now I'm all about the girls.:sweat

And I guess we will have to wait for the new issue of Volks News for Frozen ladies which I think is only a couple weeks away. I thought maybe Elsa's birthday, Christmas or New Year's we might have gotten more photos but that wasn't the case. Ah well. It's gotta be soon ...

    29. Ha, I feel like we are all going from event to event, desperate for any kernel of knowledge about these girls. I’m so excited to see them—wish Volks would give us something. :)

    31. I just snatched a WS F-16 off off YJA. He's always been a favorite of mine but I never pulled the plug thinking I could get one anytime I want. I originally wanted him in sunlight but this one comes with a very pretty face-up... He kinda reminds me of Kaelin. I can't wait to have him home. First I'll have to sacrifice a kidney to our DHL overlords. I don't even want to know how much the shipping is going to be... :...(

    32. Congratulations! F-16 is gorgeous in WS - very ethereal like Kaelin, like you said. (though tbh F-16 looks stunning in every skintone! Can’t go wrong with that sculpt.) I can’t wait to see your new guy after the sacrifice to the DHL gods has been made!

Does anyone happen to recognize this SD17-size outfit set and know its name or when it was released? This one's unopened and I'm interested in it, but I'm really curious if it comes with a shirt or not and was wondering what it looks like when worn.
I know I've seen it before a long time ago, and I've checked all the non-HTD Dolpa sites from 29-present since I was able to figure out the link system for them, but I'm assuming it debuted in an outfit collection or something at least 5 years ago. All I know is that it's LPC Black Label.

    35. OMG, THANK YOU! I've spent the past two hours trying to identify it and the only fruits of my labor have been me finding previously unknown to me outfits that I want to track down >w< Now I can sleep in peace.
