Volks Super Dollfie - SD, SD13, SD16, SD17, SDGr, SDGou & FCS - XXIX

So, I was having this conversation about environmental resin and Dollzone/Doll Chateau. My understanding is that environmental resin was always more translucent then regular poly urethane resin which is quite opaque. They mentioned that DZ/DC uses environmental resin, which didn't ring true to my eyes at least. Anyway this is where Volks comes in. I was doing a test with my DZ doll's hand, and a Volks doll's hand, and my Volks doll's hand actually appeared more transparent/translucent than my DZ doll. I'd always considered Volks resin to be quite opaque, but now I wonder. Anyone else have any thoughts or experiences?

 

Anyone have word on the October FCS order for Volks USA?

 

I always thought Volks resin was urethane, I have 2 my SDGr F36 and my Yo-sd Mimi, both are showing some tad age, but they are not like my Iplehouse PID in the original PG which has some French resin mixed to it and that is quite a difference in texture and feel.

 

I honestly do not know, but I have a question for you. What does "environmental resin" mean? Is there really such a thing? I mean, I am sure in comparison there are certainly more environmentally-friendly plastics and resins, but I have my doubts about the manufacturing process of manmade materials being environmentally-friendly at all.

I took a quick peek at Wikipedia which states:

Many BJDs are cast in polyurethane synthetic resin, a hard, dense plastic, and the parts strung together with a thick elastic. They are predominantly produced in Japan, South Korea and China. There are also some Asian companies that have turned to cheaper production methods by creating dolls using other plastics such as ABS. As ABS dolls in particular are manufactured using injection molding rather than being individually cast, they are generally less expensive. (Source: Ball-jointed doll - Wikipedia)

I do not know much about the resin-making process and I would imagine the reason for that is companies do not want their formulas and techniques copied. But, is it possible that the DZ hand was created using ABS and injection moulding rather than polyurethane synthetic resin that is individually cast?

 

So, did I. It's possible it's some type of mix, but we'll probably never truly know, unless Volks has stated something somewhere.

DZ's dolls are definitely made from resin, and not ABS. There are different types of resins though. Both organic and synthetic, Resin - Wikipedia. Polyurethane resin is a synthetic resin. Environmental resin is supposed to be made from organic plant resin compounds, thus making it more "environmentally friendly". Environmental resin tends to also be more translucent in nature compared to it's polyurethane cousin. Some people feel the look of it mimics human skin (I don't personally agree, but that's just me.)

 

I feel like this term "environmental resin" I remember being coined by Ringdoll. It seems to be used interchangeably with french resin at times but it's decidedly not (they're both translucent but enviro is supposed to yellow at a much slower rate than french). I don't think they mean environmental to mean environmentally friendly produced, but rather it's safer for skin/respiratory system. I see it mostly being used for Chinese doll companies.

 

@revien The term has been around since at least 2006, there's an old thread on the board with someone asking about it. I'm not really sure which company first started using it. But, the reason it's "supposed" to be safer is because it uses organic resin instead of synthetic. Now rather or not that's actually true is anyone's guess.

 

Loong Soul was the company I first remember offering 'environmental resin.' It was somewhat translucent and very smooth but not shiny. I bought a grey Farkas the wolf, but he was so heavy i had to sell him.

Same! I have a bit of a budget saved up and I'd love to at least decide if I want to try for Elsa or not.

 

I am Trying Very Hard to save for Elsa, but it's hard when all the other companies are having their really good end of year sales/events. Even Volks has had dolls I couldn't enter for because I was waiting on Elsa.

The next Dolpa is tomorrow, though, so maaaaybe we'll get something then?

Really hope so! I'm hoping that either a teaser will be revealed at the Dolpa, or maybe they'll finally release more info now that the big event is out of the way.

The rain stopping finally coincided with daylight so I was able to snap a couple of wintry shots of my new FCS boy. I think I’m going to name him Luka :-)

 

I have two packages I’m waiting for and one hasn’t even shipped out yet. I’ve been waiting over two weeks for Volks International to ship. The other is an hour away from my house. I really hope my clothes from Volks USA gets here before Christmas

 

Unfortunately there was no news of the new Frozen girls at the recent dolpa I'm hoping some news comes out soon! Really hoping for the WS Elsa to be normal WS and not some new skin tone!

My Volks International package just got shipped out today. So it took a total of 10 days to process the order to shipping.

Nyle is glad to be home. He's perfect - after I made a few tiny changes to his eye makeup and put in some rather intense blue peepers. The sunlight skin is delicious! I really like the SDgr body. very bendy and does the 'dollshe slouch' very well.

Happy Holidays everyone! My boy came for Christmas, my gods I don’t know why I waited soooo long to finally decide to get this boy, he’s absolutely gorgeous, I couldn’t stop staring at him even before I took him out of the box!

HI friends. I just finished up a doll project. Whew, it's been a while. I completed yet another total make over of Hollow Avon-Gray (Masha). She finally looks the way I always wanted her to look. I made everything except the shoes this time. I also repainted her face and made the wig. She's happy to say HI and hopes you're all safe and well.

Weird question - but I received my SD Boyhood Williams today and am a little shocked at the state of his resin? He's brand new and hadn't been opened by the seller, but his body is.... not what I typically receive or expect from Volks. I have a lot of Volks resin, new and old, but I've never seen it like this?

His body just feels different. It feels lighter than normal, thinner, and the texture feels different. But most of all his seam lines are SHARP and very bad all over his body. Of all the Volks resin I've received, I've had some bad seams in places but nothing to this extent.His headcap is also not as sturdy and flush as my other Volks resins.

As far as the weight/thinness/feel issue goes, I've only had one experience with this SD body a long time ago (most of my Volks dolls are SD16/17/GR, but it just didn't feel like this. Am i the oddball out or am I losing my mind? XD

 

Honestly, it sounds like you got a recast...

 

I don't think I did. The inside of his body is clean, has all the stamps and matches the head. The head has the original faceup, plates, stamps, etc, everything is legit and the seller has outstanding feedback from 2008. Not to mention the faceup is definitely Volks original, which means if the BODY was recasted it would be pointless since this body sells for like nothing lol. so I don't think so.

I've had some pretty serious QC issues with the last few Volks dolls I've received (including straight from the company), which is new as it never used to be like this, but I'm just wondering if Volks is... idk cutting corners lately. Because I'm pretty disappointed and confused

 

@Littlebirdzoom My SD Williams does have more noticeable seam lines then my other Volks dolls, and his head cap is just very slightly smaller then his main head part and can shift a bit when you touch it. But, the same can be said of my newest SD17 Williams headcap as well (the only Volks' doll who's wig I can get on and off easy to check right now). However, I'm not noticing much difference in resin feel between SD Williams and all my others. Does he feel lighter weight wise, yes, but not excessively so, and about what I'd expect for a doll of his size. So, from what I can see and check, other then seam lines, he's about the same as all my other Volks dolls.

 

My SD17Williams Romantic Glance Version "The dusk of Will" 2017 is perfect. So is my Jo March (Lorina). I haven't experienced corner cutting with any of my Volks dolls so far. Maybe reach out to Volks and ask them about the body?

 

Hopefully this will ease you a little: many others who have received Volks doll have dealt with seam lind problems. Someone had the same "sharp" problem with their doll. I would recommend sanding them off to avoid any scratches or cuts.

As for the resin, I can't have a say in that, considering I've haven't had a BJD yet.

Thank you this is helpful. I did notice a different feel from my other Volks dolls and SD size though. The thinner parts I was talking about were mainly on the butt cavity. However, out of all the Volks resin I've had experience with I've never seen seam lines so bad and it was shocking to say the least. I expect a lot out of a company like Volks and like I said, the last few dolls I've received (both vinyl and resin) were... not great. I've been wondering wtf is going on for a year now.

I might, but I'm not the original owner and Volks is usually pretty unhelpful with inquiries like that XD all my other Volks dolls are perfect too! It's confusing.

Thanks for the help everyone. I'm still questioning the state of their QC (and have been for a bit now) but I guess I just got a bad one. I still adore him and Volks, but it's very disappointing and is making me weary. :/ I love Volks because everything is so special and high quality and sturdy feeling, so I hope nothing is changing. That's all I'm worried about.

My best friend received her FCS order last week. I wonder if they're doing it in batches but the holidays interupted?

 

@SeiNove - it might have been picked up, but not scanned. I know where I live, USPS is scanning no packages so things they've had for a month still say not picked up

 

I have to say that, this year especially, it has been a pleasure seeing everyone’s dolls posted here. Thank you all for sharing and for all the info and help that’s been provided! It’s so nice to have a positive space to share!

My SD family has grown from one to three, which I didn’t expect but had always hoped. I’ll share a photo of my girls: Morgan, London, and Giulia, all dressed in pink (whether they like it or not ). I hope everyone has a most excellent new year!
