Volks Super Dollfie - SD, SD13, SD16, SD17, SDGr, SDGou & FCS - XXIX

Aug 28, 2020

    1. @mx_95 Are you just interested in getting a taller 60-63cm body for your SD10 Williams? I recently got a Angel of Dream 60cm body that has a skinnier neck then the SDGr body. I could take pictures of my SD10 Williams head on the body if you want. The resin colors are completely different but should give you an idea of proportion.

    2. Regarding larger neck holes on smaller necks- Could you run a ring of hot glue around the inside of the neck hole, or maybe stuff a KIPS or two in there to make up the difference?
Re: other bodies- For similarly sized (but a little taller) you could try the Switch 60 (might not be the best color match) or Spiritdoll Elegance, I believe they have smaller necks more comparable SD10B body. SD10B measurements have been a pain to find so I was planning to take some after I pick up Cecile (hopefully in a few minutes! >w<)

    3. The wee Cecile arrived! I am not sure what to call him, but he's so dang adorable I might die. Sorry for the lazy living room background, but I wanted to snap some photos of him all dolled up with his big brother Isaak (SD17 Cecile), for a little compare and contrast. In the process, I was super pleased to discover the SD10 body fits toocuteclub clothes. Meanwhile, Isaak is still trying to murder something out of frame by staring at it. I am sure. Captain death glare indeed.

    4. I love them both so much! It's amazing to me how very recognizable they are as the "same sculpt, but different ages."

      • x 2
    5. @shirotsuki That's so precious..! I never knew how much I would love seeing the sculpts of different ages together! :love Oh dear.... You may have just opened up a whole new rabbit hole for my wallet to fall into...

    6. I picked up my Cecile today too! He's ssooooo cute, I just love his fat little head. He has a lot of features that remind me of the 4 sisters so I'm pretty sure he's an Enku sculpt.

    7. @Astro Yay congratulations!!! I agree, he's definitely got that vibe to him. Also, holy cow. I'm amazed how different yours and mine seem, despite being fresh out the box today. He's so adorable, thanks for sharing!!

@SoapBubbles Oh geeze I'm sorry, lol. It was the first thing I wanted to do when he got here. Isaak is my resident edgelord, and when I saw this adorable sweet face in person it made me laugh out loud. They're so complementary.

@GammaVector It's super well done, Volks did a great job capturing their characters' younger selves. I'd like to dress them in their fullsets together someday for another shoot ^ ^

    8. I have my grail doll, I fell in love with the first Williams release in 2006 but the moment was never right to get him.

I entered the lottery for this boyhood Williams at the literal last minute and won a chance to buy him. He arrived today and is absolutely perfect.

      Worth the wait!
I love the boyhood version more than the older versions of him, he’s just so cute.

    9. @shirotsuki, @Astro, @PinkBear, congrats on your new Ceciles and Williams! They're all so cute; I can't wait to see more pictures of them!

The DearSD body I ordered for my SD10 Williams arrived today, and I popped his head on to take some pictures. I need to find some DearSD boy clothes, but for now, he's adorable in his pink dress~ :XD:

    10. @Constance Your William looks so cute on the DearSD body! Never would have thought that this body suits him so well:D

      • x 2
    11. I was - sadly - only wondering, because I don't have Williams and seeing his secondhand prices, won't have for now :') But I wanted another Volks boy but I don't want it to be SD10/such small body and also wanted double jointed arms and legs... Soo I'm looking and looking! If it's not a problem for you, the pictures would be still nice to see, I mean at least I can dream teheeeee...

Beautiful Ceciles! And OMG that SD17 one... @shirotsuki he's amazing!

Also @Astro your little boy is also so cute!
About the body - ohhh I will look at them. Never thought if SDGR body has big neck or not...

      • x 2
    12. Thanks everyone!

@mx_95 it's got a big neck, about 10.5ishcm ;-; I considered putting my 2D Doll Cream head on one but I would've had to mod the neck down.

    13. My SDGr Haru arrived yesterday! I will never get over how fast FedEx is; shipped from Japan on Thursday and at my door in Friday. I don’t know if I can go back to EMS now!

I completely forgot to check inside his head, but there’s no denying he’s an f-57. His faceup really goes a long way of transforming the sculpt and I’m pleasantly surprised by his subtle differences. However I did think Haru would be nice and sweet from his promo pics... and I seem to have gotten one with a bit of attitude. But that’s okay! He balances off of Jin quite well. I hope I’ll have some time for better photos and styling this week.

    14. What gorgeous boys! Am I correct that the one on the right, in the lighter blond wig is the new Haru?

    15. Thank you! And Yes! Left is my tan f-57 from the US FCS a few years ago, and right is the SDGr Haru ‘limited standard’ with his default faceup.

      • x 1
    16. @KeiCai_Ayan They are absolutely gorgeous! What a dream to have them both, they look lovely together.

    17. Everyone's adorable baby Ws and Cs are absolutely killing me in the best way possible! Please keep the spam coming :D

@KeiCai_Ayan wooow they aren't both amazing! Gaining a new appreciation for the mold here!

And because it's the first day of Christmas (cause as soon as it's advent, it's absolutely Christmas for me) I bring Antonina (Mimi), decked out in her Christmas Version default dress... And the SDGrG body she hijacked

    19. My SD10 William's should be coming today according to FedEx and I'm off at a hair appointment >.< I can't wait to see him and out of 9 other Volks dolls and a few heads, he's actually my first that will be new from the company and not second hand after all these years.
It will be a special one. :)

    20. I got my Wee Cecile today. I’m so excited to open him up soon.

    21. Is anyone going to make their Youth Cecile into a girl? I think he would look really cute either way.

    22. My SD10 Williams was scheduled to deliver today. But now it shows arriving late. Lol.
Hopefully he will arrive soon. I can't wait to see him.

    23. No problem at all!! And woah, I think he looks really interesting on this body and more natural for sure... Thank you very much, it shows that there IS an option so nice!

    24. I didn’t have a new fellow to wait on, but I did bring home an older gal. This is my F-22 girl, Giulia (affectionately called Ducky). I have her on a swarrico body right now, but I’m also going to try a single torso sd10 and see what works best (opinions welcome!). She’s also still waiting on her proper eye colour, but I couldn’t wait to get her together and admire some classic looks.

      Ducky:

      • x 23
    25. Oh! She's too precious! What eye color are you planning for her? Personally, I think the brown is adorable with the pink wig and plum lips.

I'm also a sucker for the swarriko body, but that's more because I hate single torsos. I like my dolls to be able to slump and lean!

      • x 3
    26. Does anyone have a F-57 or F-48 they'd be willing to share pictures of? F-57 is kind of a grail ever since I saw a local friend's gorgeous Sunlight F-57, I'm also finding myself really loving the lips on F-48! Both are on my list of sculpts I would love to own one day

    27. @Aiko-chan would unironically die for Ducky, she's precious! :D (I have both my F22 and the SWD F51 version of her on swarrico bodies cause they sit so cute)

      • x 1
    28. Thank you @GammaVector ! I’m thinking of a softer blue-grey or blue to contrast with the pink, but I also like the brown. Guess I’ll have to try both and see what works best, lol. And thank you for your body input!

Aww, thank you @Roterwolkenvogel ! Thank you for letting me know about your cuties! Good to know! The swarrico does sit really cutely.

    29. :...(My SD10 Williams is stuck on his way...The tracking history only shows In transit, arriving late but nothing else.
I am so nervous...He was sent to my friend from Volksusa, then my friend sent him to me with only $100 insurance.

    30. @Zebra - *hugs* I've been where you are, and it's certainly nerve-wracking...but the only thing you can do is try put it in the back of your mind until the tracking moves...It could be that it's all still on a go-slow in the post - I was waiting over a month for stuff to be sent from the US over the summer, and it will depend what sort of postage they bought for you.

I have something (non-BJD) on the way from Japan at the moment, and the tracking hasn't moved for over a week. It's just what's happening right now...

      • x 1
    31. Thank you so much. He was sent from MA to NJ via priority mail. It's been 5 days without any movement.
      Hopefully everyone's package arrive safely...

    32. Old picture of Erik, my F-57...

... and Kaia, my F-48. Though she's a girl, so probably not what you're after.

    33. Ahh even just seeing the heads painted is great to give me an idea! I found a lovely F-48 for a really good price on Mandarake but I just found out my car may be dead so I cant buy until I know if I have to buy a new one or not Ahhhh. But thank you! F-57 is definitely on my list because that sculpt just has this smirk to me that I love, and F-48's lips are sooo cute

    34. I need Volks to come on and preview the Frozen dolls. I'm on bated breath before I buy anything else. XD

      • x 6
    35. I hope he arrives with you soon! Mine spent days saying it was about to arrive and then nothing, I finally looked on Canada Post and saw he was in customs and now I should have the slip today but he has $146 in customs fees ;____; definitely the most I've had to pay by a long shot so that was a big yikes and kind of sours the experience a little. Even worse is I know some of that goes to the fee for them opening the box, which is never something you want to pay for since you'd rather they didn't do it at all. Welp, hopefully I'll have him tomorrow for pics.

    36. I'm wondering if we won't have to wait for the Frozen ladies until after Dolpa? I thought maybe Volks would display them at Dolpa 44 and we would get photos before hand but I don't see Frozen photo on the Dolpa banner. I'm also in the anxious boat to see them! I just hope Elsa doesn't have that lopsided grin because it could either look really cute or really awful. :sweat After I saw Rapunzel repainted, I kinda regret not getting her. Ah well ...

And for anyone who can spare a kidney, a 3rd (RGV) Kasumi is on YJ. I guess the flood gates are officially open. But I can't blame people who realize that this doll might net them close to a year's worth of rent. :sweat Her face up is stunning ... :love

      • x 6
    37. I hope they don't take that long for Frozen news, I'm missing out on a lot of good doll sales (and the DD lottery) waiting on Elsa...

      • x 5
    38. Hope he arrive safely.

I’m saving money for Frozen girls too. Actually Rapunzel is lovely. I’m not satisfied with the outfit of her. The outfit of Cinderella is in poor condition either. I think Volks really should choose some textures in good quality.

      • x 3
    39. @Happy moon moon - I was so disappointed in the outfits for the Disney dolls. It turned me off the whole series. I'd love an sdgr girl. But, not in love yet. I hope we see Frozen before Christmas.

    41. My new old boy has arrived! While I love the feel of his oldskin resin, man this original SD13 boy body is a mess. Worth it though for such a perfect face.

      • x 30
    42. Oh, isn't he darling! What sculpt is he? How does the oldskin resin differ from the current skin? And what do you mean about the body being a mess? I'm so curious...

    43. @Kim Your boy is gorgeous...is he an F28? I love that sculpt...I have a slightly modded WS girl version whom I adore...

She's on the far right of this photo, with Madeleine (Masha) and Sasha...I've since restyled her in blonde.

I have a mahoosive thing for Lucai sculpts...

      • x 14
    44. Just a quick question for anyone out there with a Cinderella or Rapunzel, do you notice a big difference in the colour of resin compared to regular NS or WS? Thoughts? Opinions on the colour? Thanks! :)

      • x 1
    45. @GammaVector - He's a Kai, so a 2003 release. The original SD13 boy body has really poorly designed legs, so he's very difficult to pose because they just go all noodly. He is oldskin, and there's something about oldskin that just feels.... silkier? than pureskin. It's hard to describe.

@Alice80 - your three girls are so lovely!!! Sasha, wow! Felix is a Kai

      • x 4
    46. Thanks for the answers. I came into the hobby rather a bit late (became aware of BJDs back in 2007 or 2008, but didn't actually enter the hobby proper until 2015, and got my first doll in 2017), and so I love seeing these older sculpts. Especially the Volks ones! They have a different feel compared to modern Volks sculpts. Interesting that the oldskin resin is a different feel, too!

It's a shame the legs are such a mess. Do you reckon you'll get him a different body, or is he just gonna stay your noodly boy?

    47. I LOVE Oldskin resin, it feels almost like...velvety? Or like suede? Its extremely satisfying to me, and may be why I prefer a lot of older dolls. Your Kai is gorgeous @Kim!

@Alice80 I love your sweet trio!

Some non-old doll tax. I found this chair at the thrift store for $3, and I think it suits Oscar well!

    48. @Kim If that's the Kai I think it is, I'm glad you snatched him up first, because I really didn't need to be spending more money on dolls this year. xD He looks lovely.

      • x 1
    49. @GammaVector - he'll stay noodly and I will just have to use my stands for him. I do love older dolls and finding oldskin white is hard enough, I would not want to even start trying to figure out a resin match. He's charming as is even if his legs want to be backwards at all times. Volks has definitely upped their engineering skills over the years, it's really amazing to see the start and where they are now

@I<3MySD - oldskin just feels so nice. Your Oscar is gorgeous!

@Cloudedmind - got him from the marketplace. I needed a Lucas face in white skin, and there he was with a fabulous faceup that works right for the character

Because I am really enamored of him, this is Felix with his lady love (he's a ghost) I'm so happy to finally have them together

    50. Cinderella's skin tone is pretty much the same as DD's semi white.

Im interested in the skin tone diff between Rapunzel and Cinderella cuz according to the description they supposed to be different lol

      • x 3
    51. Felix and his lady are such a beautiful couple! I love their outfits especially!

    52. Thank you. Haven’t got an update since Nov 28th. So nervous.

    53. I have Rapunzel here and her resin is light and also quite pink. I only have Volks sunlight and oldskin normal, so no real comparisons there, but I do have a couple of other impressions I can offer to give you a general idea. Compared to Luts NS from Jan 2020, Rapunzel's resin is about as light, but pinker in tone. And compared to Fairyland NS, I'd say that Rapunzel's resin is lighter, and more pink as opposed to the peachy tone that FL tends to have.

Overall, I find it to be a lovely color, and I think it will probably age very nicely. :)

    54. I have been recently "streamlining" my collection. In an effort to differentiate "favourites" from "utmost favourites" I took a comparison photo of most, not all, of my remaining SD heads (it is below). It got me thinking about how Volks' sculpts have changed over the years and if any of you have any thoughts about that. For instance, do you have a favourite Volks "era" of sorts? Do you have a preferred Volks look for your dolls? Are you more inspired by older sculpts or newer sculpts?

In response to my own questions, I am currently finding myself most drawn to what I refer to as the "cute" aesthetic, and with the exception of Mia and Coco, I seem to be most inspired by older releases. Although DSD Vanessa is a "newer" release, the F45 was released about ten years ago. Victorique was released in 2011. Luna was first released in 2007. Kurumi was first released in 2006. I cannot explain it but I feel oddly nostalgic looking at some of these heads in their "naked" form and I can flick through memories and see when I encountered various versions of the sculpts I own. Although I do not really have a favourite "era," I do gravitate to rounder faces with big eyes. There is one exception to that rule, though.

Would love to hear your thoughts. Although I may not respond to everyone personally, since I am not big on posting here, I am very interested in hearing what you have to say.

    55. @Kim wow he looks so handsome! :D loving him with his lady too <3

      @I<3MySD ahh OSCAR!!! :D

@elphsnt that's a good question (and a lovely picture)! My favorites are clearly the very first heads Volks released (pre FCS era), those that are pretty wonky and off, huge heads, big eyes... You could've pry my old gals out my hands if you tried

    57. Having entered the hobby in 2006, I’ve felt I kinda imprinted on what was popular in that time. Black Cat Lucas was the first Volks doll that caught my eye and made me want a bjd, (though I ended up with Dream of Doll as my first). The Tokyo Boys/Harajuku Memories/Oath of the Silver Coin story arc dolls aesthetic really stuck with me I think. I’ve actually just this moment realized that my current 3 dolls I own are one each from those story arcs :sweat I remember Kun/F-22 being popular and my first Volks dolls were Schulze and Yori/F-23. So I guess something like 2003-2009 is my preferred style. A lot of what came earlier seems “old” to me and starting around 2010-2011 I began having a sharp decline in interest in new releases. It could have just been that bjd were less new to me at that time and I stopped getting as excited over every new thing but many that came out after seem stylistically either too realistic or too “soft” somehow. Like, a lot of the current releases the facial features just don’t click strongly with me and I think it’s something like trending toward bigger poutier lips, smaller eyes and rounder noses.

I’m still always interested what Volks is doing and like many others dying to see what Anna and Elsa look like :XD:

    58. This is a very astute observation and something that resonates with me. I came into the hobby 2008 but went to my first Dolpa in the summer of 2007 in Osaka as a way to kind of feel out whether I wanted to get into BJDs. It was there I first saw Luna, even before I saw photos, and she took my breath away. Now, I am aware of how much that experience influenced my current preferences.

Although our personal preferences are different, I can certainly understand why you lost interest in 2010-11 and prefer the older sculpts. There is a beautiful complexity in a lot of the sculpts from the 2003-2009 era that is very intriguing. Even sculpts that appear "simple" seem to reveal little details the more one looks at them from various angles.

    59. I have SDGr Lucia and Rapunzel - you can see the resin comparison here (Lucia on the left, Rapunzel on the right). Taken in natural light. It's a noticeable difference (I wouldn't use my collection of normal-skin hands on Rapunzel).
