Volks Super Dollfie - SD, SD13, SD16, SD17, SDGr, SDGou & FCS - XXIII

Aug 16, 2018

    1. you need a Beast @St. James - (why is it that the auto name thing only works if you know how to spell the name?)
look at that yummy shadow skin. those exotic, lionesque features.
but, yes. I hear you about Oscar. + I want the dress!!!

      :nosebleed

      • x 1
    2. @TreeLore You have a point, if they would sell the Best of the best - dolls nude without a face up I would be able to hoard more of them... my wallet is already terrified of the months to come.

@seraphicdolls Slightly modified/updated versions of the original sets ...that sounds like an idea I could get behind. I really hope we see at least one non-volks character in the lineup - and if it´s only to see how volks handles it.^^

@petiteballerine Her dress is amazing, I have seen some go on Yahoo! but much less frequent than Oscar herself.
Honestly, this set is what worries me the most right now. I don´t see any reason why Oscar and Andre shouldn´t be at the After event but I´m still a bit worried about that "Owner-Limited Optional Parts: we cannot ship overseas. (Shipment within Japan only)"- line on the product page.
Now, that line is only on the page for Oscar and Andre, not the dress, so maybe it refers to something else (like the option to order the flat feet + leg parts only beeing for locals). But IF this outfit is somehow only sold in Japan ... it´s going to be a nightmare to get it via an auction.

Unrelated but: while checking the product pages again I used Google translator on the small footnotes for the odalisque dress set. It was mostly the usual stuff (e.g. the color can change, be carefull the item is delicate, the item might affect the color of the doll etc.) but the last point said:

      ※撮影モデルのメイクは商品版「SD16 オスカル・フランソワ・ド・ジャルジェ」とは異なります。
      --Google translate:
"* Makeup of the shooting model is different from the product version "SD16 Oscar · Colonel de la Garde Royale" "
:ablink: hm ok?! If I don´t missunderstand that ....no wonder I thought her look was so different in those pictures. But I only suspected volks edited them to be a bit softer and the uniform ones to be more vibrant so the tone would compliment each look - not that she actually has a different face up!

Also there was a point stating "earrings not included" - I have to admit that I didn´t even notice the cute red earrings they put on her for the photo shoot untill now..^^II

    3. @silver sycle For any new versions of licensed character SDs like the Rozens, Gosick, Creamy Mami, or AMG, I would expect to see 1) the same sculpt, with 2) a different faceup, and 3) a different outfit, but one that the character still wore sometime in the original source material. Being able to tell v1 and v2 dolls apart in multiple ways seems to be a priority for Volks, presumably so as to preserve the perceived value / exclusivity of v1 while still giving both new customers and old owners of v1 a reason to buy the v2.

That prediction is based on how Volks has handled Dollfie Dream licensed character re-releases, of which there have been a handful by now: Saber Alter (Fate), Rin Shibuya (iM@S), Sakuya (Shining Blade), Melty du Granite (Shining Hearts), Sasara Kusugawa (ToHeart2), Saber Original (Fate), and Rin Tohsaka (Fate) - that I remember off the top of my head (there may be others). Each rerelease has followed that general pattern, with a new faceup and a changed outfit (some with small changes like for blue Saber, and others with completely new outfits like Alter v2 and Sasara v2).

The Rozens are iconic and have mostly the one outfit as far as I can recall, so I'd expect to see either a tweaked version of their original outfits, or possibly even have PeachPit design entirely new outfits for a SD re-release. Volks did collaborate with PeachPit very recently already, making a black gothic vampire dress for DD Miku last Halloween.

I'm hoping for a Victorique re-release, as I'd love to get her in SD form and she has so many scrumptious gothloli dresses in the canon to pick from for a new outfit.

      • x 1
    4. @Holo's Apple Tree Those are some great ideas. It didn´t even occur to me to compare this situation to the re-releases of their DD characters, but it makes a lot of sense! I´m sure a slightly updated version of Shinku and her sisters would be just as lovely as their original release. And getting completely re-designed outfits by PeachPit - I´m getting excited just by the possibility.

Victorique is lovely, I was a bit surprised they didn´t at least give her a second outfit for her first release since she wears a lot of amazing dresses in the show. I could imagine them doing a version of her from the last episode of the anime... Regardless, if she gets a rerelease with a different outfit, I will try my best to track down the set and wig on Yahoo!

I´m confident, whatever we end up getting in 2019 - a lot of people will be very happy (and poor).

    5. Thanks for the link! Awesome! :D

None of the picturse I've seen of Oscar so far has convinced me that I don't want her, so I really hope she'll be part of the After Event and I'll be able to get her because if I don't, thing's are gonna gt REALLY expensive it seems ...

      • x 3
    6. Congratulations. I know I'm a bit late but congrats. Both the boy and girl look fabulous. You must have a wonderful blessed Christmas this year......I just knew from the first time I saw Claude that he's handsome. At one stage, I thought Claude could be Isao's brother. I really like the way the eyes and brows are painted.

    7. Haha yes it's been quite the doll Christmas. XD Thanks!

Haha yeah I feel like Claude and the Tokyo boys might have the same sculptor. Volks molds definitely have 'families' even in unrelated lines(Like Arashi and Sakaki also look completely at home with the TB dolls) and Claude does feel like he belongs there to me too.

    8. [IMG]

Just dropping by to wish the thread a Merry Christmas!
(looks like I'll need to find a new photo archive site now that Flickr is back to using pro!)

    9. @wonton I love the character "Lady Oscar" as well, it's not boring at all to want to preserve her as is! I Volks did an amazing job with capturing her androgynous beauty and intensity, I'm really in love with their adaption. I really hope she's part of the After Party sales, I've been taking to looking at YJ! and thinking the prices aren't that bad....... which is awful of me because that feeds into the scalper problem haha....

      • x 3
    10. They've done it twice already. Rose and Bianka were the originally very limited Momoko Ryugasaki sculpt, and while there were minor tweaks, Kei is close enough to Maki Tsuyoshi you need to see them blank and next to each other to spot the differences. Both instances, they took the sculpt and renamed and re-charactered them and they both ended up in the Harajuku Memories storyline.

    11. I was kind of hoping that I wouldn't like her sculpt or something when I heard Volks was going to release a Lady Oscar doll, but I was a goner the second I saw her. Huhu~ I've been keeping an eye on the aftermarket, too, but I really can't justify the inflated prices. Hopefully we'll hear more about the After Party soon! The anticipation is too much!!

      • x 2
    12. @Kim That´s really interesting, I never heard about this before. Hopefully volks won´t change to much with the rereleases though.... (Who am I kidding? I´d still buy Shinku even if they gave her a punk-makeover...^^II)

@wonton I have saved probably every picture of her on the internet and keep trying to convince myself that she isn´t worth it...but so far that has failed miserably. So I will probably try to adopt her in January, even though I´m usually not a fan of the more "adult" SD16 body. The prices on Yahoo aren´t too bad (espechially for Andre - what I can´t understand because he´s really handsome..) but I get the feeling that the people who NEEDED to have her two months early already found an auction and now everyone else is just holding out for the After Event. I can´t imagine that she won´t be one of the more expensive sculpts in a year from now - espechially since her sculpt seems so versatile even for those who don´t want her because they love the show. She might not be the next Suigintou but she´s definitely a cutie.

In case someone here still wonders about the dress set and Oscar´s wig - I found a picture of the instructions that come with the dress, it shows how you are supposed to style the default wig into an updo:
      Toeluru on Twitter
I was somehow hoping that we would get the chance to order a second wig for the updo but I guess it won´t happen.
If I go for her I will definitely try to get the dress too - but I´m not sure if I will switch her into it very often, it probably wont be very good for her wig in the long term...

    13. Good (sorta) news for people hoping to get a chance at a Belldandy one-off.... there’s another one coming out for you to keep your eye on :) She’s wearing a lovely lilac kimono!

@silver sycle Good catch! Those are some beautiful shots of Oscar.

    14. @Chobittum Thank you for the Belldandy alert! Ack - I'm literally in tears! How can I track down a Belldandy one-off for my sister?! *_* All these beauties keep popping up - but are still so elusive. Volks, you are such a tease! Goshdarnit! LOL

    15. Oh. My. Gosh. That repainted Oscar. Absolutely stunning.

    16. Speaking of doll hunting, there's been more then a few Japanese hobbyists who've come forward the last few weeks on Twitter and Instagram about being approached in English about selling their doll, or being considered for if they ever sell their doll. I thought this was something that had long stopped in the hobby, but please remember this is incredibly rude, looks bad for the hobby as a whole, and that yes, you can tell if Google translate was used too.

      • x 6
    17. eeek. I hate that, it allways reminds me of those "please sell me your house" letters that some people get.

Obviously if something was for sale, it would be stated as such. People can be so rude.

-- On another note that belldandy is stunning! she has allways been a beautiful sculpt.

    18. I understand all sides to this.

Personally, many of the dolls I have bought were because I emailed people to see if they would ever sell their doll. This is very common in the art doll world where the dolls' values are extremely high and there is a very limited amount of them around. This is how I bought two porcelain dolls. In both situations, both parties were happy with the outcome.

I can see how some people may find it intrusive - but if you are polite, I do not see how the message would be misconstrued. Of course, if someone says they do not wish to sell, then you accept it and thank them for their consideration. <3

If I get someone who wishes to buy my doll, but it is not for sale, I am very nice in response. It is okay to turn them down. I do not find it rude at all for them to inquire about my doll. I am very flattered. That means someone really treasures my doll. <3 It makes me feel so happy.

It is okay for everyone to have differing opinions on this. I would never mean to be rude to anyone. That is the last thing I would wish to do. In fact, I believe that kindness should come first in this hobby! :D

    19. I am not here to argue one side or another - although I admit biased - I am merely relaying what has been spoken about. Some of these people (doll hunters) have been publicly named and their media profiles shared so that they can be blocked. Others are stressed because they're getting messages in a language they cannot properly respond to. I haven't yet seen anyone say they're flattered or happy with the inquiries, and remember the cultures are very different as well. Just use common sense.

    20. It's probably a Good Thing to remember that standards and practices aren't universal. What's seen as perfectly fine in some parts of the wider doll world get very different reactions in others. Art doll collectors might be comfortable with unsolicited sale propositions, but in general they're seen as intrusive, unwelcomed and (No matter how kindly-worded they may seem to you-) just plain impolite among BJD collectors. Think about how some fashion doll collectors react to repaints vs. how BJD people think of customization. This is a similar case of not everyone seeing eye-to-eye...

It's an issue that's come up time and again here on DoA and elsewhere, and in general more BJD collectors dislike the practice than support it. Things can get especially dicey when a collector coming in from another part of the doll collecting world makes assumptions based on their prior experiences, and then reacts poorly when told it's not such a Done Thing here. They tend to end up boggled over why we reacted poorly to their "innocent question", while the BJD people grumble about how making offers for dolls that absolutely ARE NOT up for sale is ridiculous and rude.

Personally, I try to be kind when someone makes that mistake... particularly if I know the person is coming to BJDs from some other part of the dolly world... But I still think it's annoying. The would-be buyer is being presumptive and pushy in my opinion, and honestly, it makes me LESS inclined to deal with them if I ever did decide to sell the doll rather than more.

Sorry if that seems harsh, but I've gotten a few too many of those "polite offers" over the years on dolls that obviously weren't going anywhere if the person had bothered to pay the least bit of attention to anything but their Inner Gimme. (You know, dolls that I've routinely described as favorites. Dolls in the 'pry them from my cold, dead hands'-category, like Shonokin and Kessari. Dolls that were 100% NOT FOR SALE. <_<)

So... yeah. Tread carefully if you're going to make offers.

      • x 3
    21. I should maybe point out that requesting for people to sell something is specifically against DOA rules??? I don't want anyone to get in trouble for it. I've bolded and italicized the relevant rules taken from the DOA rules page, specifically here:

Do not buy, sell, trade or advertise items or services outside the Marketplace, except in your signature*. This includes:
      • mentioning that your item is for sale or trade
      • listing items for sale in your DoA profile
      • answering a "Where can I buy..." question with your own sale
      • asking for help pricing items for sale
      • soliciting commissions, even for free
      • cross-posting images from your current sales threads
      • posting images that are watermarked with your business logo
      • asking if anyone is selling a specific item
      • asking if there is interest in a split or group order
      • asking members to sell items that are not listed for sale
      • asking members if you may commission them
Basically, regardless of what members may or may not personally think about soliciting sales, it's against the rules on the DOA platform.

    22. I think it is seen as more rude than not in the BJD world because so many owners not only put so much time in to making their doll unique, but because they imbue them with a character. There is the idea of animism, where the object is imbued with life and is not a empty shell. Getting an unsolicited request for a sale is asking something more personal. You aren't just asking to buy my F38 (for example), you are asking to buy Blackpool! And I wouldn't part with this guy, I created him too.

@bronzephoenix it is true that this is against the rules on DoA. But I do believe this was said to be happening offsite.

      • x 3
    23. @idrisfynn Ah, fair enough! DOA rules certainly can't apply to offsite interactions.

    24. @revien I am also dropping by to say Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone. I posted this on Flickr earlier, I had time to do 1 outdoor photo session in the snow with Date and he is beautiful. I named him. His first name is Daniel, last name Date, the middle name is Ashta because I'm shocked he looks good in that ash grey wig bought 10 years ago from Cotin Doll Shop which has ceased business. Ashta as in "Judau Ashta" is the name of Protagonist from the old Gundam anime series Double Zeta (ZZ). Daniel Ashta Date has a romantic ring to it.

hmmmm......Lady Oscar is looking better and better, she's the type that grows on you. The more you look at her, the more enchanting she becomes. I really like the repaint of her in a post by @silver sycle through the twitter link. So quickly and someone already attempted a repaint and with such confidence. I won't be adopting any girls any time soon, my only girl Olivia feels neglected.

    25. @revien and @stargazer_i, thank you for sharing your handsome guys! XD Hunks for the holidays! ;)

Another reason to consider carefully how you go about interacting with others is that all English-speaking/Western collectors will be judged by the actions of some. Cultural norms are different, and exercising maximum politeness is important.

Additionally, asking to buy others’ dolls may make people feel uncomfortable or guilty about when they want to post pictures or share those dolls. For me personally, I love seeing pictures of dolls, even dolls I don’t own but wish I did. I wouldn’t want to make others unhappy about their dolls any more than I’d want someone to make me unhappy about mine.

      • x 6
    26. What about sending a message to say “I really admire your doll!”. Is that okay? Like not a message to ask for a sale, just a message to say their doll is beautiful and I love seeing them? I’ve done that once or twice, and now I’m feeling nervous.... I’ve never sent a message asking about selling a doll if the person hadn’t already talked about selling them.

      • x 2
    27. @Chobittum I have not heard any complaints of that, so I would not be nervous. In the thread the things that were talked about were messages asking to buy their doll, asking to be considered if they ever sell their doll, or being offered very high prices for their dolls. The only thing that came close was someone saying they were messaged about how much they liked their ___ sculpt and that they wanted to get one themselves. In the last case I think it was a language barrier issue and the person thought the other meant to "copy" their doll.

      • x 1
    28. That sounds really odd to do, especially with a language barrier. O_o;

On less controversial terms, that one-off Isao Volks posted on Instagram is quite lovely. Come to think of it, it's been a long time since they've done an Isao one-off, hasn't it? I can't remember one recently.

    29. I have so many pictures saved, too! I also got a copy of the Volks magazine she's featured in (the cover is SPARKLY!!!). I especially love the pictures of her sitting on the horse in the display at the Doll Party. And I love love loooove the dress, but I know I'd never put it on her so I'm going to try to resist lol. It's great that they provide instructions for the wig! It would have been nice if a spare wig came with the dress tho.

If I manage to get my hands on Oscar, there's a Crobidoll wig that I might get for her as a spare. It has curly bangs that remind me of the character!
CROSS † AMBITION - BJD CROBI
(Not sure what size Oscar's head is, but the wig comes in multiple sizes.)

    30. @Ian-KunX The last one I see is from 2015, so yes, it's been a while! I've noticed they've been doing a lot of older sculpts as one-offs in the last six months or so - I wonder if it's reflective of what they've been seeing in the Best Selection voting.

@wonton Oscar comes with a DD size wig, so presumably 8-9 would be good. It is a gorgeous Crobi wig :love

      • x 1
    31. *sigh* That is a marvellous Isao One-Off -- I like that they didn't try to give him fuller lips by going past his own lip lines. He simply looks like a nicely updated version of his old Limited editions self :love

Crobi makes some lovely wigs, but they don't stretch much; sometimes I have to fight to get them on the doll's head! And sometimes pop a couple stitches to make it work :sweat

    32. Yeah all these lovely older sculpts for the one-offs have been giving me some serious nostalgia! Haha it's good I don't live in Japan, I would have been putting in for them all year. XD

And yeah when Crobi says their wigs that size are 8", they really do mean 8". I've got them on Ephram and Stephanie and the latter especially I have to tug on. But they look so good and once they go on they aren't going anywhere lol.

    33. Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas.:hollyberry

The Isao one off really does stand out. How adorable in that short wig and has a great faceup.
I really love the way the eyes were done on the Shinku from Sato one-off batch of photos.:aheartbea

      • x 10
    34. I think you might be on to something there.... they’ve posted a bunch of the different one-offs that will be coming out in the different storefronts, and there are sooooo many Suigintou/Souseiseki/Suiseiseki sculpts! I know there’s been a big demand for them on this forum, and if their aftermarket price is any indication then it’s the same on the Japanese market.
Haha, and another Belldandy for @seraphicdolls :)

    35. Jeez there's so many I almost wonder if they're going to end up doing another release of just Rozen Maiden lol. A couple Shinkus and even a Hinaichigo too.

    36. I counted the new one-off photos; there are FIVE Suigintou one-off models, SIX Shinku, two Genji, two Rigel, and several duplicates of other sculpts. I definitely feel like this is the first time we’ve seen them with so many same-model one-offs in this short of span.

If they re-release Suigintou I’d be all over it; all her gorgeous one-offs over the years have really sold her to me! Extra crossing my fingers for a Genji re-release.

      • x 1
    37. Sometimes I think I may be the only Volks-collecting person out there who just doesn't get the appeal of the Rozen Maiden girls...

I'd be ALL ABOUT a re-release of Genji, though.

      • x 1
    38. I really love the Shinku mold. I neve wanted any of the Rozen Maiden's as full set dolls ( like the show but I dont like chacarter dolls.) But man, the Shinku mold is really speical looking to me. Belldandy too. Deffinatly some of my faviorte sculpts have been chacarter dolls.

    39. @Brightfires Not the only one, I too don't get it, although I hate to type that because now I can guarantee I'll change my mind in a few months and have to go on a very expensive doll hunt (anyone remember my instant dislike of the new F-80? Yeah, she'll be here next month....)

On another unrelated note, and I'll put this in a relevant photo reference thread too, Volks Sunlight is actually a reasonable match with Dollstown (and therefore Dollshe??) Copper Oriental. The Dollstown colour is a bit paler and slightly less red toned, but I think the tiniest bit of blushing would make it perfect (it really looks close enough to leave it as is to my eye). According to some other resin match threads I have seen photos in, this should mean that Soom Tawny should be a reasonably close one too. I hope that helps anyone who is looking for a different body!

[IMG]Dollstown Copper Oriental vs Volks Sunlight by Flowergirl Fashions, on Flickr

    40. Hmm... I'm not so sure about Soom Tawny. It's not a wildly different type of tan, and would probably work with some blushing, but looking at my tawny dolls vs. my sunlights, I wouldn't call them a match without that.

    41. That is good to know, I haven't seen it in person, just a photo from another thread that looked reasonably similar. The hunt continues!

    42. Unfortunately (speaking from sad recent experience) the Dollshe-cast resin colors fade and change if you aren’t super-careful about light exposure. Volks resin seems to have a little more “resistance” to fading and color changing, though of course I don’t recommend letting them sunbathe! :sweat

    43. Ugh, did I mention I hate Y!J!!! (I kid) But man an auction that should have ended in 10 minutes dragging on for another 30-40 minutes is no fun. But I really shouldn't be browsing it late at night while I'm sick, because now I have two incoming dolls, both of which will need some tender love and care. A SD10 Kun, and an FCS F-31.

      • x 4
    44. Wow, that is a lot of the same model one-offs!
I've coveted Shinku for years. She's the one I'd like to get a re-release most. I'm so particular about how I like her makeup though.
If they so ever do more Rozen Maiden I'd really love to see Kirakishou or Barasuishou more then just re-releases, and Kanaria needs to join her sisters, too.

      • x 2
    45. @Cloudedmind Oh boy do I know the dangers of Y!J auctions. *looks at Travis, Lukas, and the F-05* ...Actually. *looks at Ephram* I mean sure that was 13 years ago but still.

      • x 1
    46. @beamlette Oh no! Thank you for that info, I'll steer clear then I think. I really love the Volks bodies anyway, I guess my girls will just have to stay put.

I am glad I stopped browsing Y!J, way too tempting. Dollyteria and Mandarake however.....

    47. I didn't mean to entirely scare people off the Dollstown Copper oriental bodies; sorry! When new, they are a nice match for Volks Sunlight, as is regular Oriental for Volks NS. But I did want people to know that they need to take extra care, especially if they live in a very sunny climate like mine.

      • x 1
    48. I might be ok in miserable rainy Wales then, hehe! I am tempted by the 17 year body for my Syo, her old school proportions are lovely but she looks like there is something a bit off when she is next to my Coco, and they are meant to be in the same "story".

    49. @Ian-KunX @flowergirl Yeah, that was a nice chunk of change, even though I got pretty good deals considering they come with some nice extras. They both have faceups that will sadly have to be removed as they are DIRTY. The F-31 is for me, and the Kun will be a gift to my sister.

    50. @Cloudedmind looking forward to seeing them when you have finished with them :) I love Kun, I remember when she was really popular/cool, I don't see her around much these days (like so many of the older sculpts).

    51. @flowergirl I've also always really liked Kun, so a part of me is sort of sad I have to give her up. xD Who knows maybe I'll get one for myself some time down the line.

    52. What do you guys think about the likelihood of Lady Oscar looking good on an SDGr body? Whether she comes to the International AE Lottery/Winning her in the AE Lottery notwithstanding, her face is absolutely perfect..... but I'm just not a fan of the SD16 body. Have any of you guys put your SD16 girls on a smaller body and had it work?

    53. @Chobittum I used to have an Ami on an SDGr boy body, and I thought it worked quite well... but that's slightly different lol. I can say that some of the SD16 molds get released on SDGr as one-offs - Ami & Cristal at least.

EDIT: Wow, I just went to go look at the Sumika January one-offs and - wow I can definitely confirm that's not usual! Definitely reads like a most-wanted list haha. Nothing super surprising, although Daria & Ryo in the 16 list is interesting. I'm glad to see Black Jack & Kiriko in the 17 list too. :love (And there's SDCs! :eusa_pray Everyone still loves Hewitt, good. Not exactly what I'd pull for a Yo list but I'm not surprised either.)

    54. Where is this list of one-offs? I can’t seem to find it to look at.

    55. :XD: This makes me happy, and also gives me hope that the Grown Up Ver. Hewitt from the last round of Best Selection voting has a chance.

    56. Happy new year everyone <3 I hope 2019 brings good dolly things for us all! Here is a quick pic of my Coco (current favourite, my F10 is really not thrilled).

Does anyone have any photos of their Saki/F-59 to share? I would love to see!

    57. Happy New Year! :sumomo: I started the year off with taking a couple of shots of Thalia (SD F-09/Mimi) before I potentially change up her look. They aren't great shots, but I still I wanted to post them cause I adore her. I don't know why, but even though she's imperfect she just seems so special to me. >w<
