Volks Super Dollfie - SD, SD13, SD16, SD17, SDGr, SDGou & FCS - XIX

Aug 15, 2016

    1. I love this conversation and I do enjoy being ok with what I don't have. I think it opens me up to new things. I know I often wind up searching for beauty in other dolls. I've actually found myself completely letting go of some older "grail" dolls simply because I became interested in something else.

As for dream dolls eventually making there way to you, I also believe that to be very true. I have a Tohya and a Masha. Both ended up with me in different ways and I'm so thankful to the doll owners who sold them to me here on DOA. Masha was my big lucky catch.

    2. Mother SD's juju mostly restricts itself to the secondary market, for me -- but I'm a late adopter by nature, and generally I only figure out I'm crazy about a doll after everyone else is totally over it and on to the seventh or eighth Next Big Thing. The Marketing Exclusivity is more of a vaudeville show as far as I'm concerned, because inevitably I'll still be thinking "ehhhhhhh, I don't know, maybe I don't LOVE those lips" five years after the lottery period has come and gone. Then the doll will appear on the secondary market, hit me over the head, and drag me back to its lair.

    4. Welcome back then, @Simiram - your girl is lovely in casual wear!

We seem to be having a mini-Volks meeting arising at our doll meet tomorrow. I'll try to take photos, but I'm terrible at cellphone photography so I make no promises. LOL

    5. 'The trueness of one's truth, Zorak, is clearly based on their vernacular inaccuracies'
-Moltar via Space Ghost Coast to Coast

... and in that vein it also follows that your truth is just as valid and you are as "true a fan" as anyone else in the world who loves Volks dolls.:aheartbea:3nodding::aheartbea I hear your point about exclusivity being annoying. There is certainly a fine line to walk in the marketing of exclusivity. It's been explained to me that this tactic is more popular/tolerated/enjoyed(?) within Japan and since that's the focus of Volks, it makes sense they use it as they do to move product.

I do think they are making more stock in general as I've seen the aftermarket for dolls really change in the last 5 years.

@Cynthia in FlintHills I totally understand what you mean. I think it sometimes takes seeing dolls in the hands of owners to recognize the potential their sculpts hold. I think that is one of the reasons I love DoA so much... you can see promo photos and pass on a doll but once the gifted folks on this forum get their hands on it... it becomes completely amazing and unique. The transformations are always simply amazing.:aheartbea

@Simiram Stunning girl! I love all of her freckles. Super charming and just the ray of sunshine I needed today. Thank you for sharing.:thumbup

    6. I think in Japan, not just Volks, you can't get away from gambling or "lucky" chances or lotteries. Everything from pulling coupons out at the locate Lawson's for a prize or discount, to conveyer belt sushi and putting your plates into a machine to see if you win a gachapon toy prize to fukubukuro New Year bags (lucky bags) to all of the arcades with crane games or pachinko, is designed with the mind set of being "a winner" or "luck". You just can't get away from it. And Volks is the same. Lotteries, exclusive items, contests, etc โ€ฆ Will you win the doll in the lottery (but still have to pay for it)? Will you have luck on your side and be fast enough to put all the items in your shopping cart during an after event? And so on โ€ฆ I think it is taking them a very long time to understand that their model of business is just not a western model. And that model of business just leaves a bad taste in the mouth of a lot of western buyers. I'm not excusing their behaviour but just trying to say that they didn't come up with this on their own. I think competition in Japan is very high. Retailers have to compete with each other for business because there is just so many stores and restaurants that everyone is trying to get customers in the door. This is they way everyone does it in Japan. I do think Volks is sloooooowly figuring it out. I went into the Sumika shop at Dolpa 36 almost at the end and I don't think a single item had sold out! That is a very rare thing. And I see on the International site this morning, most items look like they are in stock. Plus the pre-order of Jo, Beth and the DDs at Dolpa, I feel like maybe Volks is starting to get the message, "Make it and we will buy it." Maybe. :sweat

    8. Oh maybe you're right! I died for a DD Len Kagamine and I didn't win him in the lottery. Now he is available in to buy in limited quantities on the Volks Int. site. Like other limited ones that I saw such as BlackJack and Kiriko. Of course I bought my Len and in two weeks already had him at home <3

    9. Well, due to storming weather, 3 of the Volks girls didn't make it to the meeting and the only photo I got was with a Volks MSD, a DDD and a Smart Doll. Oh, well - maybe next time (although I do love that little MSD!).

    10. Hi! A bit of a thread lurker, I've followed all the Volks threads to keep updated on brand updates but see what owners are discussing. I've been researching the latest addition to my family being the SD17 boy. The body is awesome and really posable!
The doll that got me into this hobby, 11 years ago was MSD Toppi <3 !

    11. Sooo...I just won an Ebay auction for a used SD13 F-24, or Link. Looks like he dates from around 2006. I wasn't getting my hopes up but I'm extremely happy. Can't wait for him to join my family! I've never even touched a Volks before...

    12. ah derp I meant f-26! I love your girl. Those eyes are amazing.

    13. I've had a similar experience to what others are reporting in this thread, but only with DD falling into my lap not the SD.

I have to admit I'm less impressed with Volks never ending lottery thing. I think their dolls are cute but it really does feel like I have to be *lucky enough* to buy them. Often times, when they run the lotteries, I just don't have the cash on hand. I could save up for it, but pulling $1000+ out of my pocket has never been a talent of mine (sadly). I'm understanding how Volks got a reputation for being "snobbish" amoungst collectors back in the later 2000s. It's not that what they are doing is wrong, their product, their rules, it's simply that when people see how easy it is to order from other companies and then see this velvet rope treatment, there's a wicked case of sour grapes about it that could easily be blamed on money (therefore, using cruel words that traditionally describe anyone who has more than you such as "snob"). At the same time, the reputation for difficulty feeds the passion in other collectors who treat it more as a hunt. It's an interesting dichotomy.

The FCS in America was a breath of fresh air because it's limited but a little more predictable. It gives me the rush without as much frustration. I still want to participate in a lottery just to say I did it, but I think I'm just going to get the two dolls I want and move on. Thankfully, I fell in love with two FCS girls (saki and F63) so it'll be a little easier for me.

    14. Hello everyone! What wig size would you all recommend for a F57? The 8-9" wig I tried on him is definitely a bit snug, but I'm worried that a 9-10" wig would be too big D:

Here he his, currently wrapped in a scarf for modesty until his outfit arrives. My phone pic doesn't do him justice---gabriel did an amazing job on his faceup *.*
      [IMG]

    15. I would suggest measuring his head before getting a 9-10" wig. I have a F40 that doesn't look like using 9-10" but turned out his head is big enough for 9-10" lol
Or you can try a stretchy 8-9".

    16. @Natty

My F-57 uses 9~10 wigs, though DD sizes, which are usually 8~9(?) fit OK as well, but I find his head shape can sometimes distort their look a bit, since it's more oval. For example my Amakusa who arguably has a wider head wears the Airy Wolf well, but when I put it on F-57, who has a taller head, it looks a bit misshapen.

Here he is in 9~10 wig: Instagram photo by @bitterfox โ€ข Sep 13, 2016 at 7:19pm UTC
and 8~9 wig: Instagram photo by @bitterfox โ€ข Jan 2, 2017 at 7:40am UTC (meanwhile Amakusa looks like Instagram photo by @bitterfox โ€ข Dec 20, 2016 at 7:22pm UTC in the same wig. It needed a bit of styling to look OK on F-57, and almost looks like a different wig).

    17. Gorgeous face up definitely! Pls up more photo when he got his outfit and wigs XDD

    18. Holy god. After ten years (and an almost-impulse smashing of the 'buy' button on Mandarake) I can finally join this discussion. My holy grail is coming home -- a one-off Shirou T. Praise Mother SD!

His wig is on order but as soon as I get his cute little butt home pictures will happen. I am so excited.

    19. Congratulations, Tez!! I know how excited you were to be able to get him! ^__^

Also de-lurking because of beautiful dolls on the thread. Am hoping to be able to see more photos of F-57. ^_^ His head without a wig looks a bit taller than I expected though. :o

    20. F-57 is totally gorgeous!! I love this mold, hope in some next FCS this year hi'll available again! and ohh I thought he used 9-10 wig!! but I see 8-9 fit too

@revien your F-57 has the Volks faceup? I like so much his faceup <3 your boy is beautiful

    21. I ordered my first Volks boy! Purchased from the MP, the SD17 Black Jack Kuroo ! :dance:apirate::wiggle

    22. I have another new outfit commissioned for my easy-to-spoil Emily Rose! I need intervention! LOL

    23. w00t! *high-five*

That little guy has been a long time coming. 'Grats, Tez. ^_^

I have a slightly stretchy 8-9 Kemper mohair wig on Erik, my F-57. It's snug, but otherwise a pretty good fit.

    24. Thank yoooooou. (I love how anyone who had any contact with me in the chat knows all about my quest-for-Shirou. XD)

So long coming. SO long. But he's on his way! *high-five*

    25. @paxita He does but he doesn't, it's a one-off faceup by luluco, not a FCS faceup.
      Thank you

    26. My F-24 arrived after only 3 short days of waiting! His box opening with clumsy phone photos is up in its respective gallery :XD:

    27. @Ru-chan The photos were not clumsy :D But I am so glad you have him. Congrats!!

    28. @tiyama Oh wow why didn't I think of that? The measurement is literally their head size xD That's a great idea, thanks so much :) I'll order a tape measure off amazon before I buy anything.

@revien Wow, your boys are gorgeous *.* Where did you buy the wig in your first picture? It's such a lovely color!

@Rui. Thanks so much! :) I definitely will, his outfit is on order from Dokkebi_Judan so it should be here within a month or so I think :o

@Brightfires I love how mature Erik looks o: Thanks for the recommendation! :D

    29. My Creamy mami whit cinderella girl's clothes. :aheartbea

    30. @lekatto Adorable, adorable Uzuki cosplay :D

Ah, I wish Volks would do a Mika and Rika DD :aheartbea

    31. Me too!! I love Mika's character so much. :D

    32. They seem to be trying to do all of them.

    33. @BeyondTime Haha, I doubt that. There's 200 girls.

Only way they could come close is to release clothing/wig sets and have people modify existing DDs.

    34. I don't know the whole series, but they have started releasing minor characters from the show. At least that's how Anastasia was described to me.

    35. @BeyondTime Most of the minor characters in the show (the anime is just a spin off of the mobile game, which is where it's at) are actually the more popular characters. Ranko, for example, is more popular than all three of the girls used as the main characters. That they haven't cashed in on an MDD Aznu yet...

But again, 200 characters. Volks'll never cover 'em all :XD:

    36. Hello! I just got SD10B body with long leg. I wonder that this body can wear SD13 clothes? or it need a specific clothes to wear?

    37. Oh, WOW, @Tez, I am so very, very excited for you!! See, Mother SD had a plan for you all along . . . it just took a while to maneuver YOUR Shirou in the right direction.

Congrats to everybody on all the beautiful incoming resins!!

    38. I can totally see how 200 would be hard, and even if they did it there would probably be 200 more by then. Still it means a lot of popular characters they can turn into DD.

    39. More than a while, that's for damn sure, but I have reaped the rewards of patience.

I got home for lunch today to find a giant box from Japan sitting inside my door! HE'S HOOOOOOME. Now I just need his wig so I can take pictures of him (none of the wigs in my box-o-doll-stuff fit his big noggin).:XD:

    40. Congrats, @Tez (ยด่‰ธ๏ฝ€*) ! Can't wait for the pictures :aheartbea

On another note, has anyone entered the lottery for the SDGR Jo&Beth March ? I realized it ended a few days ago ; the results are coming next month, but I hope that everything will go smoothly !

    41. I entered, @Watabana :) Hoping with all my heart that I'm lucky.

    42. Fingers crossed for you, @wherethelilacsbloom !
Did you enter for one in particular ? Or the both of them, maybe ? (*'โ–ฝ')

    43. I entered for Jo/Lorina :) The sculpt is a grail of mine, that I never thought Id be able to get.

    44. I didn't see anyone answer this, but SD13 clothes wont fit well on SD10. SD10 boys can share clothes with SD10 girls, SD13 girls, and I believe SDGrG.

    45. Here's a quick photo of my Volks SD17 Black Jack and my Iplehouse nYID Andrew.
I swapped wigs and I took out the default HQ glass eyes for brown. I'm debating whether to give him a new faceup or not. The scar is interesting and gives him character!

    46. @revien Thank you so much! You're so kind. This really helps me a lot. :D

    47. I entered for Jo. I think she's really lovely!

    48. I wonder how many dolls will be won.. I feel excited, but also a sense of dread. :P I never win things! :P

    49. Same here! Although, I did win the Volks USA Black Cat Lucas lottery way back when. However, that was when Volks USA had just opened up, and I don't think the demand for LEs was as high as it is now. I really hope I get her, although the practical part of me is screaming about the price (since I have a couple of trips coming up).

    50. I really hope that you'll get her! Is she the same sculpt as Lorina ? I hadn't realized that (;'โˆ€') This explains why she felt so familiar in a way!
Fingers crossed for you as well (ยด่‰ธ๏ฝ€*) She's really pretty indeed, and was just gorgeous in other outfits at Junichi Nakahara's exhibition during the last Dolpa โ™ฅ I had my eyes set on Beth, but did also not had enough funds to enter for her. I'm a bit afraid of her second-hand retail price climbing afterwards, it's already pretty high on Yahoo Auctions (;ยดโˆ€๏ฝ€)

    51. I kind of regret not entering for Jo but I already own Alice and I really wanted a WS twin rather than a NS. But the collaboration was really well done. I think I'm more sad that the rest of the outfits on exhibition are not being produced? I hope they change their mind.

    52. I entered for Beth! It doesn't seem that she is really popular here so maybe I will win!! LOL

    53. Yay! I just paid off my SDGr Mytyl tonight. The seller said they will ship her right after I paid for her. I hope to receive her soon.

      • x 1
    54. @Yurikun Congrats and I can't wait to see her on here :) Please post a picture when she arrives!

    55. Hello everyone !

Have you seen the new mail from volks USA?

(To mods : sorry if this isn't allowed here, i just wanted to make a short reminder for those who haven't seen it, don't hesitate to delete if it doesn't follow rules)

There will be a new Dear SD, and a new SD outfit, both in colaborations with Baby The Star Shine Bright (a very well known lolita fashion brand).

But what caught my eye in the email was that fans of Super Dollfie and BTSSB will have a very special surprise... Anyone else wondering what it is? :fangirl:

I am already planning to jump on the SD outfit hoping i can grab it :eusa_pray

I love seeing my dolls in lolita fashion, i just find them so cute, anyone else thinking the same? Please post pictures! :aheartbea:aheartbea:aheartbea

    56. Omg as a fan of both worlds, this is genuinely wonderful, I wonder what it could be too.~

    57. Congrats @Yurikun I bet she'll be so cute!!!

I'm feeling so hyper and anxious right now wondering about the Volks cruise XD and if the "early February" that they mention for
results will be soon..or not as early in February as one would think lol. I am sure I'm not alone! I also want to know details for the CA one so I can decide about that...hubby & I have wanted to plan a California trip...

      • x 1
    58. Ooooh, I am very excited by this collaboration and would like to get my hands on an outfit. I really love the BTSSB outfits, but I could never wear them as I really don't think they would suit me. But on my doll? Perfect match.

Is this mail from a mailing list?

    59. Yes, it is from the Volks USA mailing !
The entry will be from 1st of march to the 10th, and the lottery results will be announced at the end of march. :sumomo:

    60. I'm waiting to hear too! I'll report back when I hear something- either on the forum or in PM. I am in the same boat, I'd love to know so I can divert the funds elsewhere if I don't get in.;) Apparently it'll just be a Paypal invoice when it shows up in your inbox!

@PinkBear Congrats on Mytyl! I was one of the people who bought her for her body only but her face is totally amazing so she stayed.:whee: I know you'll truly love her.

I'm also excited for everyone who entered in the 'Little Women' lottery! The sculpt is such a classic, gorgeous one and I cannot wait to see even more of them welcomed home. Thank goodness Volks realizes (in some respect) how important it is to see rereleases for all the people who love their dolls and artwork.:3nodding:
